Love, war and surviving

Not all people react in the same way when they are hurt either physically or emotionally. Some break down easily, finding no reason to live or to be happy. Some are stronger then others and will take what ever happened to them as a part of their life. The three stories from Tim O’Brien’s book “Sweethearts of the Song Tra Bong”,“Stockings” and “The Things They Carried” give us an imaginary situation of three men in the war being in love and dumped by their girlfriends at the same time whereas one of them is finding it very hard and painful.

Henry Dobbins in “Stocking” is described as a big and peaceful soldier who was showing his love towards his girl by wearing her stockings around his neck. He is fighting far away from home, thinking of somebody who he loves, believing that his girlfriends stocking around his neck will bring him luck “The pantyhose, he said, had the properties of a good-luck charm.” (O’Brien 117). The stockings for him maybe were not bringing any luck maybe it was just a pure love towards his girlfriend and her smell that he was just simply too embarrassed to say it to other guys. The soldiers were making jokes about it anyway “There were some jokes, of course, but we came to appreciate the mystery of it all.” (O’Brien 118). When Henry had to live through a very bad day a day when his girlfriend had dumped him he wasn’t angry or crying, he just said “No sweat, “he said, “The magic doesn’t go away.” (O’Brien 118). He peacefully kept on with his life. But he kept the stockings around his neck anyway just for luck.

For Mark Fossie in “Sweethearts of the Song Tra Bong” thing did not go smoothly not even for his love life. Some people, when they move to a different country, they become a subject of change under some influences and they may not even realize it. If we take Mark’s girlfriend, for example “She was seventeen years old, fresh out of Cleveland Heights Senior High” (O’Brien ). No one would ever think that such a girl, full of love for Mark Fossie would turn into an evil herself. But Mark Fossie new he was losing the love of his life but he couldn’t just say “No Sweat” and keep on going just like Henry Dobbins did. When Mark Fossie thought by bringing her to Vietnam will bring some brightness and happiness into his partially ruined life. Instead, it became a nightmare, and he couldn’t get away from it “Fossie hesitated. “But I can’t… If she is there, I mean, if she’s with somebody-““Oh, Christ.” (O’Brien 100).Mark couldn’t let it go. Love made him crazy, exposing him to the danger. It made him crazy enough to enter the Greenies compound searching for his girl. Maybe he should have sent back home a way earlier and to pray to god he stays alive so he can go back to his Marry Ann.

I have been asking myself a question, what is it that I really want out of my life? This question has been on my mind since my freshman year of high school. To start, I must try to figure out the path, which will lead me to the comfortable life. One might ask, what is that comfort that we all are striving for? Is it a state of mind or is it some unknown world that we are so eager to enter? Well it varies from person to person, depending on your level of success. One of the biggest parts of decision-making, like going back to college, can be very difficult for most of us. Most people I associate with believe that success depends on your family’s background that you have. There are those who say if the person was raised in a rich family, all opportunities are available to them and there is a good chance that person will live a comfortable life. Those same people are saying that if a person was raised in a poor family there are too many obstacles to overcome and most of the time these barriers on the way are too hard to cross.

I have witnessed being born in a rich family helps a great deal during the course of your life. You are brought up in the household that provides the best condition for exploring the world, and its greatness. There are no worries about the basic needs like food, shelter or security, and all the resources are provided being the excessive amount of money. Being born in a rich family also means meeting people and making the contacts earlier in life, which will later be helpful in that most difficult step of finding your first job. Another aspect of being born to a rich family is the set example by your surroundings. When you are around people who have accomplished something in life it is only natural to strive for something high in life.

On the other hand, we have a person born to a financially challenged family has been exposed to a lot of worries about financial situations. Most likely, that person at an early age, had to think of how to support a family or just help them self out. That person will have to work, along with going to school, which will take away concentration from school. Therefore, a person has little chance to finish high school or even go to college. Sometimes a financially challenged family will show little or no support for the higher education because they will look at the short run problems, they need money now, not four years from now. To every rule there are always exceptions. There are people who would totally disagree that the opportunities are limited only to the rich. They probably see this world as a much brighter place, the place where any person could reach the desired goal if he/she wants it bad enough.

The programs that the government offers to the financially challenged supports every individual that would try their best to succeed in life. This includes such things as financial aid, state and federal scholarships, educational programs, and student loans.

I have set many different goals in my life. Some goals are more important than others, but all are important to keep. Our goals in life make us what we are. Personal goals have a tendency to change over time, as you, yourself change over time. Goals in my life are important to me, as they should be to everyone, but sometimes people stray from their goals, due to impulses or greed. I hope, from this day forward, that I can follow my goals carefully and not stray from them.

One of my goals that I have set for myself is to do well in school and start by earning my Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. I will be spending the next few years at the University of Phoenix enlightening my mind. Although I am presently working five to six days a week I will still be able to attend school one day a week, which will help me to focus more on my goal. Once I have earned by bachelors, I will continue to work towards my master’s degree in business.

Another goal that I have set is to receive the training and education that I need to open all opportunities to receive a productive job that I will enjoy in the future. I do know that in order to fulfill my dream, I will have to put in a lot of hard work and time. My career goal is to work for a Fortune 500 company as the top or one of the top executives of the company with a six-figure income.

Once my two main goals have been established, I will then marry the greatest woman, currently in my life, and spend the rest of my life with her. I would really enjoy planning some incredible getaway trips, such as a Caribbean cruise or a Disney World Adventure.

My first step towards my future is a college education. To become successful in this, I must have the will power and the dream that I have strived for all my life. If everything goes as planned, my dream will surely follow.

Giving Up and or Quitting as the Case May Be

Honest, I tried to have a quiet time each morning in Alabama. It was rigorous self-discipline that did it, not enthusiam or joy or meeting a Person each day. I was praying through Peter Lords 5 Plan - a nice prayer notebook. God did not answer my prayers in the affirmative, but it was a nice way to pray. We had a baby though, and that took care of the spare time for prayer in the AM. She was a sweetie. Two more came along. Sweeties, all.

We tried Matts format for friendship evangelism in Alabama. Nothing. This did not work for us. Why, God? I also found the Deeper Life stuff was not working for me like it was for those who wrote the books.

I quit expecting God to move. I got down to parenting and the job and marriage responsibilities. We still went to church a lot. Three times a week, in fact. I taught Sunday School to adults for years and years (still do). It was fairly rewarding, but not what I wanted in a relationship with God. It did not match what I could find in the Bible.

One thing, though. About age 0, I quit being so bashful.

I did make a serious personal commitment to not sell out my wife and kids to pursue personal career goals. (Thank you, James Dobson.)

Sometimes a Light Surprises . .

In 1, Peter Lord came to Florence, Alabama. I made it a point to go hear him. He was much calmer than 15 years before. This time, I got two sentences. You can hear from God. The greatest enemy to hearing God is hurry.

For weeks it seemed like God was immediately present whenever I was outdoors. That was nice and warm. I had not expected Him to move after so long.

The mens group, Promisekeepers/Men of Integrity, came to the area. I went to some meetings. I was challenged to cross racial barriers.

Throughout the novel Conrad uses the motif of the heart to thoroughly explain how dark people and places really can be. Conrad uses the heart as a symbol for the entire continent of Africa. The heart is also used to show what the heart of mankind truly is. Another use of the heart is as a representation of the inner station, which shows the darkness of exploitations through Kurtz. The different uses of the heart are amplified through such literary devices as irony, imagery, and metaphors.

Africa, according to most maps, is at the center of the world just as a heart is the center of the body. However, the Europeans did not know much about Africa. There was a blank spot on the map that kept Africa dark and hidden from people. Marlow decides to go to the heart of the world to explore the Dark Continent. Conrad shows just how dark and mysterious Africa is by using metaphors to describe parts of the continent; He refers to the Congo River as an “uncoiled snake”. This type of metaphor creates great imagery and lets the reader know just how dark and dangerous Africa really is. Africa is also considered dark because everything that Marlow encounters here is considered evil. He sees great darkness in the exploitation of the native.

The darkness of Africa directly ties into the heart of mankind. The white people that go to Africa to exploit the native show how cruel and evil men are when they receive benefits for their doings. Conrad uses vivid imagery to paint a picture to convey just how bad conditions are on the natives. Marlow says, “They were dying slowly- it was very clear. They were not enemies, they were not criminals, they were nothing earthly now- nothing but black shadows of disease, starvation, lying confusedly in the greenish gloom” (6). This passage depicts the conditions of the slaves; the one’s who were victims of man’s evil and darkness. Despite how bad things were for the natives, the Europeans felt no sympathy for them and this is the same for the rest of mankind, according to Conrad. The accountant is a perfect example of how the rich felt towards the poor. He once says, “The groans of this sick person distract my attention. And without that it is extremely difficult to guard against clerical errors in this climate” (). This comment is indicative of the heart of mankind. Mankind shows no sympathy for others when its own comfort is in danger.

The inner station represents the third use of “the heart” in the story. Marlow starts his journey at the outer station and slowly makes his way towards the inner station. As Marlow travels more and more the evil that he encounters gradually increases. At the outer station he first meet the manager who has traces of evil. However, once Marlow reaches Kurtz he finally realizes how dark it is at the heart of darkness. The way that Kurtz exploits the natives is appalling to Marlow. Not only does Kurtz physically exploit the natives but also he does the same thing emotionally. Kurtz has so much control over the natives that even the chiefs bow down to Kurtz. Kurtz single handedly disrupts the natives’ lives. He lets his desire for ivory come first over the culture and traditions of the natives. The darkness in Kurtz causes the natives to treat him like a God. He has complete power over what is not truly his. The dark role that Kurtz plays is similar to that of the devil. One piece of irony in Kurtz is at his deathbed when he cries, “Horror, horror.” These worlds briefly describe the conditions of Africa and the inner station. This is ironic because Kurtz is the person that is creating this “horror”. Kurtz shows the reader how the heart of darkness is definitely present in the inner station.

The heart of darkness has several different meanings. Conrad uses several different things to represent the heart. However, in every case the heart is shown to be evil and dark. Conrad’s argument is quite effective considering that he does not have one thing or person represent the heart. Instead he uses the heart as a symbol for many different things. Conrad uses imagery to make the darkness of the heart that much more evil. The literary devices uses, such as metaphors, point of view, and irony were equally effective in displaying the heart of darkness. After reading Conrad’s work it is evident that there are many hearts of darkness in the world.

~ William Carlos Williams

Despite the superiority people grant to our tumultuous modern society, many of us find ourselves wishing for the comfort of the country lives of our ancestors. Small-town and farm life have been glorified by many artists in many different forms. In “The Red Wheelbarrow” William Carlos William uses the power of his words to create a strikingly vibrant, symbolic image of some of the essential elements in farm life hard work and reliance on nature for nourishment and prosperity. These symbolic elements help us to understand the opening stanza “So much depends upon.”

Williams opens his poem with a very dramatic image “a red wheel barrow.” He grabs our attention to the wheelbarrow by painting it the eye-popping shade of red, but he gets us to focus our attention on this image by dragging out the line, creating a break in the word “wheelbarrow.” This strategy forms an emphasis on these words and prolongs the reading of them, causing us to wonder, “what is the importance of this wheelbarrow?” To me, the wheelbarrow is a symbol of the hard work done by farmers.

Although I was not raised on a farm or in a small town, my family tries to retain much of the work ethic of our ancestors. For generations my family lived in the small farming community of Peculiar, Missouri. During World War II, my grandfather and his brothers signed up with the armed forces and, although they were scattered all over the globe, they tried to stay true to what their community had taught them. They believed that nothing comes for free; you have to work for it and that everyone has a job that they need to do. For me, the wheelbarrow of this poem symbolizes this sort of work ethic. In a farming community everyone is important because we all need to work together for the common good.

The next element Williams introduces us to is that of rainwater. In the second stanza, he parallels the unnatural break from the previous stanza by adding one in the word “rain water.” I believe that the rainwater is a symbol of the dependence of man on the grace of nature. Farmers need the rain to nourish their land; without it their crops will fail. A year of poor crops can be disastrous for a farming community. Without the rain to replenish the land, the wheelbarrow (symbolizing hard work) would be useless. No matter how much work you put into a task, nothing will come from it without nourishment. The rainwater could also simply symbolize the renewal of the land. If the land is not able to properly renew itself, it can fight back against man. In the mid-1800s, my great grandparents moved to America from Ireland because of the great potato famine. This famine was caused because the majority of the population had become reliant on the potato crop for food. However, so many people had been growing the crop for so long that the land didnt have a chance to renew itself and a fungus attacked the crop. Because of this, there wasnt enough food to feed everybody. Millions of people died and many left their homelands to start a new life in a new land.

In the final stanza, Williams completes the image by adding one last element white chickens. Williams creates a contrast to the wheelbarrow by making the chickens white rather than brown or grey. This contrast makes the chickens stand out as an important symbol in the poem. To me, the chickens represent the prosperity that comes from hard work and the nourishment of the land. I, personally, have not had much first-hand experience with chickens. When I was little my grandfather, after his retirement, kept a small farm with a few animals - chickens being one of them. One day, my sisters and I arrived at my grandparents house a little earlier than they had expected. My grandmother told us that my grandpa was out in the garage and then sent us out to say hello to him. When we turned the corner to go into the garage, we saw our grandfather about to slaughter a chicken which was meant to be that nights dinner. We gasped, which distracted my grandpa; causing him to decapitate the chicken in the wrong place. As my sisters and I soon found out, if you dont slaughter a chicken in exactly the right way, it causes the nerve endings to not be completely detached and the chicken will still be alive for a few moments. In those few moments, the headless chicken managed to chase my sister half way back to the house. After that incident, my sisters and I usually stayed as far away from the chicken coup as we could. However, now that I am older, I can understand the importance of animals to a farm. The upkeep of animals requires a lot of hard work and money. In return, animals provide farmers and their families with meat, milk, and eggs.

The Red Wheelbarrow is not just a poem that exists to provide us with a beautiful image; I believe it is a comment on how, in farm life, even the smallest thing can have a great purpose. The hard work of the farmers, the renewal of the land through rain, and the nourishment that animals provide are all interconnected; without one of these elements, the others can not function. People rely on the nourishment that crops and animals provide for them in order to put in the hard work a farm requires, but without the nourishment of the rain the farmers hard work would be in vain. So much depends upon each of these elements in order for there to be prosperity.

Hemingway

I learned how to fly-fish about five years ago. Actually I never caught anything, which is probably a good thing, because if I had, I would probably feel intensely guilty about it. I can’t remember whether that was before I became a vegetarian or after. I only did it two times and I never got my feet wet, so I guess I can’t really relate to the romantic vision of Nick Adams up to his thighs in freezing water fighting a trout. But I did learn one thing from the experience, which is that women have an easier time learning it than men. Men have the hardest time getting it out of their head that if they just cast harder, the fly will go farther. It takes some patience to learn the fluid motion, and women seem to pick it up much more quickly. I also learned that you always want to be in control or you will find yourself with a new hook-shaped earring.

I really don’t buy into the whole fishing-as-spirituality thing. I would never argue with someone catching a fish for their dinner, but I refuse to see it as a romantic thing. Fish have always seemed kind of foul to me, too. Even before I stopped eating meat, I stayed away from eating them.

But all things being equal, I don’t have nearly as big of a problem about fishing as I do hunting. The little fishies don’t have a very developed nervous system, so I doubt they feel as much pain as us, but again, who knows? Hurting anything or anybody for no better reason than entertainment is bad karma really bad karma, and I am of the belief that karma is never wasted. That is to say that when you hurt anyone or anything, you are actually hurting everyone and everything, including yourself. I’m guessing that old Nick got his in the end. We at least know that he got shot.

I’m pretty sure that old Ernest got his in the form of a shotgun in his mouth. Perhaps the spirits of all those animals that he massacred decided to haunt him and manifested themselves in the form of a liquor bottle, driving him slowly mad. We don’t always see how karma manifests itself, but it is like energy itself, never dissipating.

Antonio is never with a woman in the play and the only time he talks about love it is about his love for Bassanio. In Act IV, scene 1, Antonio says Commend me to your honourable wife. Tell her the process of Antonios end. Say how I lov’d you, speak me fair in death and when the tale is told, bid her be judge. Whether Bassanio had not once a love.

Antonio loves Bassanio so deeply he is willing to die, and before that he is willing to give him to Portia, because Bassanio has no idea how deep Antonios love runs.

When Antonio sends Bassanio a letter to ask him to return, telling him of the failure of his ships he includes the line if your love does not persuade you to come, let not my words. I think this shows that he wants to test Bassanios love, and though deep down he knows that Bassanio is not gay and is quite happy with Portia, he probably knows also that Bassanio still cares about him and will come and then he can comfort himself with the idea that it was Bassanios love that brought him there.

Bassanio left Belmont to save Antonio; he could have just sent the money to Shylock. Portia would have had enough money. In Elizabethan times a man would not leave his wife so soon after he had married her. Another reason that shows Bassanio’s love for Antonio is the ring. Portia gave Bassanio the ring to symbolize her love him and makes him promise to never give it up but when Portia pretends to be , Balthazaar and asks for the ring Antonio’s first reaction is to refuse but Antonio convinces him to give Portia the ring, if Antonio can convince Bassanio to give up something that means so much to his wife then his feeling for Antonio must be very strong.

Write your Relationships in the Merchant of Venice research paper

In the beginning of the play Bassanio say to Antonio To you, Antonio, I owe the most in money and in love and I have thought of a plan to pay everything I owe if you will but help me. This tells us that Antonio only planned on marrying Portia because she was rich and he needed the money.

When Shylock said he would take a pound of flesh if Antonio did not repay his loan Antonio said No, you shall run no such risk for me. Bassanio was not willing to let Antonio risk his life I think this is because of his love towards Antonio.

But who knows maybe that got your attention. Today I want to tell you why certain types of music shouldn’t be listened to.

Music has been know to a big influence on society. Some music is good but other music how ever carries bad influence in its lyrics. Some of this music talks about Sex, drugs, Killing people and discrimination. This music has been know to influence the minds of teenagers every where.

An example of this influence was columbine. Now I know those boys had other reasons to kill there fellow students but music had a big impact on them. There have been other such cases that have had the same thing happened. The first question the police ask is what type of music did this teenager listen to.

I believe if some of these lyrics were not listened to the way people are influenced would be a lot different. Some might think music isn’t such a bad influence but it is. It has a bigger impact on people more than anything in the world.

By this time that one person wondering who’s report was better has figured it out now. And the one that went to the restroom is probably right out side of the door. After thoughtful consideration of the various problems that plague this corporation, the main problem that stands out is their distribution channel, that is the company’s sales force. To be more specific, their career-based agents are not trained to perform at their utmost efficiency. Though this problem can be categorized as long-term, it can still have drastic effects on the firm’s present revenues.

This problem along with other problems creates a vicious circle that the company is presently entangled in. Meaning that since the new recruits are not trained to perform efficiently, they prefer to sell more disability income and annuities than life insurance because consumers can understand these policies better and the agents find them easier to explain. This problem coupled with low premiums per policy, results in an overall reduction in the annualized premium income, which according to the firm’s executives is the most immediate concern.

Strengths

Custom Essays on Jefferson Pilot Corporation

Under the auspices of Roger Soles, Jefferson Pilot Corporation has earned a reputation of selling quality insurance products since the past 5 years. Looking at some of the core competencies, Jefferson Pilot has an excellent core of field and home office people. This company has a big market share in its industry compared to its competitors. This is evident from its strong financial condition that acts as a competitive advantage.

Decision-making and management had a top down focus and a high level of control has always been exercised.

Weaknesses

In the long term, the decreasing efficiency of Jefferson Pilot’s sales force is a serious issue that demands immediate attention. Looking at Exhibit (), compared to the target group and the managerial peers, Jefferson’s career agents go for the easy sale, that is they sell less of life insurance policies and more of disability income and annuities.

A further weakness lays in Jefferson’s concentration in the southeast; where the standard of living of the people, so to speak their incomes are generally lower than in the Northeast. Many of the competitors have a strong presence in the Northeast and hence due to the level of incomes being higher there, their premiums are typically higher than Jefferson’s.

An important negative aspect of the product offerings by Jefferson Pilot is that they do not have a variety of products as compared to its competitors and also there is little or almost no effort towards New Product Development. The work force also feels that the company is not market oriented. These facts are evident from the survey taken by the consultants.

Stemming from this problem is the retention of the company’s sales force problem. In 11, recruits represented 48% of the base sales force, as compared to % and 8% of the two peer groups. Furthermore, Jefferson’s sales force kept declining where as the two peer groups remained more or less stable. Likewise, only 5% of Jefferson’s sales force had been with them for 5 years as compared to 40% and 45% of the other two peer groups. Hence they had a very high turnover rates as compared to the peer groups.

Lower productivity of Jefferson’s agents versus the peers has also been a serious issue besides the above listed. The reason for this is low production standards compared to the peers’ standards. Even the agents feel that the validation requirements, so to speak the performance standards that first year agents must meet, 6% believed them to be too low or modest.

Jefferson Pilot’s marketing costs are in line with the managerial group but are a little above the target group, which is mainly due to the company being smaller than many of the target group companies. There are certain fixed costs that they have to incur which costs them about $1.65 for every $1.00 premium income in the first year as compared to $1.45 for the target group.

As a writer, I believe I have a very unprofessional way of writing, as well as brainstorming. I usually draft the whole paper at once. I feel I do much better that way. Not only that, I seem to be a procrastinator. Very rarely am I ever done with time to spare. I could write almost anywhere and at anytime, but since I am an evening person, that’s when I seem to get most of my work done. I am always satisfied with what I have written but I know it can always be better. I just never know where to start. I don’t have a very good vocabulary, so my writing is always easy to understand for almost anyone. That’s something I would like to improve. I think my best kind of writing would have to be poems. I can always overachieve with poetry. It’s usually your own style. Of course I sometimes enjoy others such as creative and narrative, it most of the time depends on the mood I’m in, or how motivated I am at that point. Some of the best pieces of works I have done are a Florida Writes Test essay and a poem I wrote about an old boyfriend. I received a score of five and a half out of a possible six on the essay, and that made me very proud. The poem was chosen as a top finalist in a contest and was placed in a book of poems. It was something I can always remember about writing. I am not too good with brainstorming. My work usually comes out all at once. Rarely do I ever change my original draft, more than likely because I don’t usually get helpful responses. But this semester could be a chance for me to become a better writer for my own reasons.

A world full of fear, envy, and pride is boiling in a fragile pot at its breaking point. Ready to set off massive hysteria. These attributes, put to the extreme, can surely mean the end for a civilization no matter how great. A person with these characteristics cannot possibly function, blinded by their envy, hidden by their pride and forgotten by their fear. If one person can be this affected by their problems, can you possibly imagine a village with these symptoms? In Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible,” envy, fear, and pride are just some of the ingredients displayed in Salem, Massachusetts during the witch-hunt.

Fear was a key factor that helps throw this village off the cliff. Everyone in the village did some sort of act out of fear. The very thought of fear is enough to cause people to do the unthinkable. For example, Abigail drank blood out of the fear of losing John, the man she lusted over. Abigail was blind by her love for John by her obsession that one day she may be the next Goody Proctor. Her fear of being caught caused her to do things that she might not have done if she did not contain fear in her consciences. Abigail’s sudden psychotic outburst were not the only ones fuel by fear, the girls also falter by bending to her wishes and following her lead of accusing anyone that stood in her way. Her uncle, Reverend Parris, was another of the numerous victims of fear. Reverend Parris kept significant information from the court to keep his job as a minister and to protect his reputation in the town. He could not afford having his daughter and niece committing unholy acts in his home while holding such high authority in the town. Parris was a spineless coward that let silence take over his righteousness. Names were blurted out in the courtroom because of the fear of being hanged. Fear won the battle between evil and good in Salem.

Another trait of character that spells doom in bold letters is envy. Envy brings jealousy and jealousy brings hate. Envy was the quality that everyone but a few in the village suffered from. Mrs. Putnam had great envy towards Rebecca Nurse because she had many children and numerous grandchildren where as Mrs. Putnam only had one child, Betty. Mrs. Putnam’s envy and jealousy towards Rebecca was so great that it turned to loathe. Her envy drove her to accuse Rebecca Nurse of been a witch. Mrs. Putnam’s envy made her crazy, driving her to the point of accusing someone so innocent as Rebecca. Abigail, our top villain, had a bad attribute of envy. She had a strong passion of envy towards Elizabeth Proctor, John Proctor’s wife, she could not stand that Elizabeth has John’s love. Abigail’s envy caused her start this whole madness in the village. Abigail went through long lengths to get John to think of her softly, but John did not give in to her. Abigail was a psychotic girl who was a hazard to herself and the people around her. Envy creates jealousy, jealousy fuels hatred, hatred made these people condemn the innocent. Envy is a quality that played a big role in the village’s hysterical reaction to witchcraft.

Pride plays another huge part in the story. Some of Salem’s most respected people were accused of witchcraft. Many of those that were accused decided to keep their pride by not confessing and by tying their names to lies. They were too proud to admit to a lie, so their pride cost them their lives. John Proctor, Giles Corey, Goody Osburn, Rebecca Nurse, and many others were put to death for their silence and refusal to declare a lie. Giles Corey was a great example of pride. Instead of turning on a friend and putting him at risk, he decided to put his life on the line. He said nothing to the court officials and so they put him death along with his pride. Another great example of pride is John Proctor and his confession. All he needed to do is sign his name and he was a free man, but John took the road less travel and stuck to his morals. He would rather die than be stripped of his pride, which was his name. The name that had more pride than those than confessed.

Lucy Terry, who was a slave until 1756, wrote this poem while she was enslaved. This is a poem about the attack on Old Deerfield. In this poem, she talks about how the Indians killed 5 enslaved men. She seems to have a great attachment to making a point of saying their names so they will not be forgotten. They must be people that she knew, people that she knew to be great, or just people who were slaves also. It was August 5, 1746 and the Indians were out to kill some very fearless enslaved men. The Indians ended up killing 5 slaves.

First was Samuel Allen, who was a hero and is a hero no more. Terry says, “his face no more shall we behold.” She is saying that without a face his memory might be forgotten. Then there was Eleazer Hawks, who was killed without knowledge of the Indians being there. Before he had time to fight he was shot and killed. Oliver Amsden was killed and his friends were in grief. Terry has really taken these deaths to heart. These men are just a few that died in their fight in ending slavery. Adonijah Gillet was heard to have lost his life. John Sadler escaped being killed by fleeing across the river. Eunice Allen tried to save herself by running, but she was caught and was “tommyhawked” and left dead.

I had questions about this story, were these slaves able to write and read? If not then how was her poem remembered (published)? How long after? Was the translation muffled? I’m sure that she recited her poem enough times for people to remember. She really seems to want to have these men and the woman remembered. People probably memorized the poem; this is a verbal culture rather than a written one. They heavily relied on stories about their homeland to maintain their sense of belonging.

Beowulf and Gawain have more differences then similarities. Some of their similarities consist of being heroes and overcoming evil. Although they are both heroes of the medieval times, their heroism differs in many ways. For example, both Beowulf and Gawain prove to be brave, but Beowulf is the braver of the two. Throughout the story Gawain shows that he has more humanlike qualities then Beowulf and that he has love for his life and living.

Beowulf is a warrior who fights on his own with his bare hands. He kills Grendel, a vicious bloodthirsty monster, like it was nothing. On the other hand, Gawain shows his bravery and humility by telling King Arthur that he is not the strongest nor the smartest knight, so his life is less important and won’t be such a great lost if he was killed. Therefore, he puts his life in danger when he accepts the challenge of the Green Knight. Gawains human qualities are shown when he is subjected to temptation and accepts the green girdle for protection. As part of the deal Gawain is supposed to give the Green Knight whatever he receives, but doesn’t give him the green girdle. If Beowulf had been in that position he would have given up the green girdle because he did not need weapons or protection. The way Gawain and Beowulf differ is when the ax is swung at Gawain. When this is done Gawain flinches, which shows his human instinct. If in a similar situation I think that Beowulf would not have moved and would have let the ax become his destiny.

All in all, Beowulf and Gawain have very few similarities and a plethora of differences. Beowulf is a strong warrior that needs no weapons to help him, just his own strength. His qualities are very far from humanlike because the only time he experiences defeat is when he is old and dies. On the contrary, throughout the story Gawain experiences problems and defeat. He also expresses his human instinct by flinching. Both characters prove to be brave in many ways, just each one has different heroic qualities.

The Freedom of the Forest

Some of my first thoughts about Black River Falls, a small community of sixteen thousand, in Northern Wisconsin, are of the profound sense of freedom I had when I visited my grandfather’s house. I was allowed to wonder the forest with my grandfather’s dog, Stubby. My grandfather never worried about me wandering alone in the forest, because Stubby always knew the way home. I would give my grandfather that wide-eyed look to escape once again into the forest. “Off,” he would say almost whispering and the adventure would begin. Stubby, a small brown multicolored border terrier would scamper down the sandy path leading into the forest. Stubby named for his short tail, was a very alert, active little dog capable of squeezing through narrow apertures and taking on animals twice his size. My grandparents initially settled in Black River to farm the land, which included several hundred acres of forest. When most people look at the forest, they only see the vast expanses of trees white and red pine; willows, oaks, and soft maple all tightly packed together, but the forest is so much more than that. It is a magical place, for a child to explore. The towering trees provide shelter along the well-worn path that leads deep into the forest. Filtered sunlight casts shadows through the twisted branches above, and makes the leaves glitter and dance in the wind. The ground is damp and moist, a perfect environment for the bounty of mushrooms waiting to be discovered. As a child I was always surprised that mushrooms came in such a kaleidoscope of colors, as well as sizes and shapes that excite the imagination. Each exploration in the forest produced something new a freshly fallen tree, a small stream, a whitetail deer grazing along the path, a pair of squirrels racing among the trees, or a great horned owl surveying the forest floor for his afternoon lunch. A brilliant white birch with arms outstretched stands erect, like a doorman welcoming each guest into the forest. At its base lie finely curled sheets of bark nestled among the wax-covered pine needles on the ground. I stepped carefully along the path, cautious not to disturb any near by critters. Although seemingly still and quiet, the forest is alive with the Red Bellied Woodpeckers rhythmically engraving the trees; interrupting the melody of the crickets and the frogs. The creeks, devoid of water in summer are pulsating with life in the spring. I always found it fascinating to play in the trickling water of a small stream. The forest is a carnival of smells; the pungent aroma of pine sap glistening on cones announce summer, while damp burnt leaves evoking a sense of fall around the corner, and with summer each new scent quietly added to the marquee. Stubby would occasionally wandering back, and then scurry away in search of some new smell. I find it amazing how a certain smell can transport me back into the forest of my childhood and that sense of freedom.

Records show that the first group of laborers was Africans who arrived in Virginia on a Dutch Ship in 161. It was known that the Jamestown colonists treated the Africans as indentured servants. As years passed, many of these Africans received land and their freedom. Unfortunately, other Africans arrived in small groups, but it would be many years later when the Europeans would begin the systematic use of Africans as slave labor. Economics was a major issue. In Virginia, many indentured servants were purchased for 1,000 pounds of tobacco, while a slave might cost double or triple that amount. By the late 1600s, a decline in the indentured servant population doubled with an increase in the colonies overall wealth. Most arrivals to North America came abroad slave ships, not as indentured servants, but to be sold as slaves.

According to the Equiano packet, it stated that the European slave trade began on a small scale. A Portuguese sea captain landed on the Slave Coast, and captured twelve men in 1441. However, slave catching was not new in Africa. Muslim slavers had been selling black slaves to Middle Eastern buyers for centuries. It was also cited in the Equiano packet that the trade flourished for about 50 years. At this point of time, somewhere between 15 and 4 million of the West Africa’s most able-bodied men, women, and children were taken from their homes and spirited across the sea. Most of them ended up in the West Indies and South America. About 500,000 had been brought to colonial America by 1777. At that time of the American Revolution, one out of six Americans was a slave.

The journey across the Middle Passage was a complete nightmare of horrors. Slaves were crammed into dark airless hulls of the ship, and they were also shackled together in long rows. The struggle getting to the West Indies took about five weeks. The food was scarce and often rotten. The sick and helpless were thrown overboard and many went mad. Unfortunately, others threw themselves into the sea rather than succumb to slavery. More than 0% of the black people who set out from Africa never reached their destination.

According to the Fredrick Douglas packet, he was a slave child, but at the time he was to young to work in the fields. So, he had a great amount of leisure time. The most he had to do was to drive up the cows at evening, keep fowls out of the garden, keep the front yard clean, and run errands for the master’s daughter, Mrs. Lucretia Auld. He would also help Master Daniel Lloyd in finding his birds, after he had shot them. They became quite attached, and Daniel was sort of a protector to him. Daniel wouldn’t allow the older boys to impose upon him. Fredrick was seldom whipped by his master and suffered little from food and cold weather. In February of 18, Portuguese slave hunters abducted a large group of Africans from Sierra Leone and shipped them to Havana, Cuba, a center for the slave trade. This abduction violated all of the treaties then in existence. Fifty-three Africans were purchased by two Spanish planters and put aboard the Cuban schooner Amistad for shipment to a Caribbean plantation. On July 1, 18, the Africans seized the ship, killed the captain and the cook, and ordered the planters to sail to Africa. On August 4, 18, the Amistad was seized off Long Island, NY, by the U.S. brig Washington. The planters were freed and the Africans were imprisoned in New Haven, CT, on charges of murder. Although the murder charges were dismissed, the Africans continued to be held in confinement as the focus of the case turned to salvage claims and property rights. President Van Buren was in favor of extraditing the Africans to Cuba. However, abolitionists in the North opposed extradition and raised money to defend the Africans. Claims to the Africans by the planters, the government of Spain, and the captain of the brig led the case to trial in the Federal District Court in Connecticut. The court ruled that the case fell within Federal jurisdiction and that the claims to the Africans as property were not legitimate because they were illegally held as slaves. The case went to the Supreme Court in January 1841, and former President John Quincy Adams argued the defendants case. Adams defended the right of the accused to fight to regain their freedom. The Supreme Court decided in favor of the Africans, and 5 of them were returned to their homeland. The others died at sea or in prison while awaiting trial.

Yes there were exceptions to the black rule, but they were few and far between. Cited in the Fredrick Douglass packet, soon after he went to live with Mr. And Mrs. Auld, she was kind enough to teach him his A, B, C’s. After he learned this, she assisted him in learning to spell words of three and four letters. Just when he was progressing in his learning, Mr. Auld found out what was going on and immediately he instructed his wife to cut out these lessons. He explained to her that it was unlawful and unsafe, to teach a slave to read. Soon Fredrick understood the pathway from slavery to freedom. Now Fredrick had a new plan. He would make friends with little white boys, who he met in the street, so that they could teach him how to read. They would teach him at different times and places, and finally he succeeded in learning to read. Cited in the Equiano packet, his fate was not to be that of an ordinary slave, as he traveled extensively, eventually exploring the Artic. Eventually he was baptized with the name Gustavus I (Gustavus Vasa). He was one of the few slaves who became educated and as a result he was equipped to write him a journal.

To put it briefly, many of the slaves were treated poorly, but as an exception there were a few that were educated, and received their freedom. I feel that freedom has a major impact on a person. Having your freedom let’s you find out about life and who you are as a human being. People like Fredrick Douglass and Equiano, were very lucky to be in history books so that we, especially black people, can learn more about them.

5. Story.

This book is about a man called Dr. Henry Jekyll he is a rich man who lived in the city of London in 1885. He was a strange character, who was conducting experiments on him self by taking drugs and shifting into another character. He called this character Mr. Hyde thus living with two different personalities to an extent where he wrote a will leaving all his belongings to his other character in case he shifts to the other personality permanently. This confused his friend the lawyer Mr. Utterson who started investigating with common friends about the mystery of the will as Dr. Jekyll did not even introduce him to this unknown heir. At first Mr. Utterson discussed Dr. Jekylls character with Mr. Enfield. Mr. Enfield told him about the most unusual story of a man who tripped over a little girl without realizing his fault and just stood there silently with out any reaction for his bad deed, while people gathered around to help the crying girl. The girls father came shouting for the police. The strange man finally spoke asking them not to call the police offering a 100 pounds. They accepted the offer and went with him to a house where he brought out a Checkbook in the name of Dr. Jekyll and signed as Mr. Hyde. Mr. Enfield took Mr. Utterson and showed him the door to that house. A new clue is added to Mr. Uttersons knowledge. To follow the mystery Mr. Utterson started to get more suspicious because Dr. jekyll never mentioned Mr. Hydes name to him. He then went to visit Dr. Lanyon, a very close friend of Dr. Jekyll, to ask him about Mr. Hyde. Though Dr. Lanyon knew Dr. Jekyll but he had no idea about Edward Hyde. Thereafter Mr. Utterson kept watching the old black door night after night, finally at the third night he saw a little man wearing large clothes approaching the door. He stepped up to him and addressed him by the name of Mr. Hyde. The man answered back how do you know me. Mr. Utterson told him that Dr. Jekyll informed me about you because I am his lawyer. The man ignored Utterson and quickly unlocked the door, walked in and shut the door behind him. Furthermore Mr. Utterson went to Dr. Jekylls house and asked his servant, Poole, whether Dr. Jekyll is in the house or not. Poole said that he was out. Then he asked him if he knows a Mr. Hyde and the servant answered that he is a friend of Dr. Jekyll however he had never met him because he usually comes in through the back door of the laboratory.

To sum up Mr. Uttersons search for the true identity of Mr. Hyde, he investigated with all the mutual friends. He found through the letters send to him and the rest of the friends that Dr. Jekyll was involved in a Sirius experiment to control the evil part of his mind. Unfortunately, he was too late to save his friend Dr. Jekyll from his sad end.

I think the point of adding file sizes is to know hich ones are real. And i also have another suggestion. Why not just add new movies. Its easy to find the older movies dated one month back.

Ill also add my two cents. I downloaded Narc. The filename is [TMD]Narc.(sws).ts.(1of).avi. The file size is 18 MB or 141.44KB. The second one is a fake which is actually 15 minutes worth of movie that looks like a 45 minute movie, and if you use divfix, the movie will actually appear, but which actually lasts about 15 minutes, and cuts out way before the end of the movie. Its actual size is round about 8 MB whereas it would seem as if its 117MB or 11.8KB. Im downlaoding another second half, and ill get back to you if its real.

Doesnt anyone know the real version of about schimdt??
