Patrick Sherill, a post office employee in Edmond, Oklahoma had a history of work problems and knew that he soon faced termination. On August 0, 186 he returned to the post office in which he once worked and killed 14 postal employees and soon after killed himself. This is just one of many examples of workplace violence, an ethical issue that is growing at an alarming rate in the U.S. Violence in the workplace has now reached epidemic levels according to data provided by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Bureau of Justice Statistics. A study conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice predicted that one in four employees would be victimized by workplace violence.

The Workplace Violence Research Institute, located in Palm Springs, CA. and established in 1, conducts studies and research into the causes of violence in the workplace. The Workplace Violence Research Institute also develops effective methods to help reduce the potential for incidents and provide consulting services to assist companies and organizations to assess the risk of workplace violence. The Institute defines workplace violence as “Any act against an employee that creates a hostile work environment and negatively affects the employee either physically or psychologically.

About 1,000,000 individuals are victims of some form of a violent crime in the workplace each year and about 00 are killed. This represents 15% of all violent crimes committed annually in America. Workplace violence can include verbal threats, fistfights, rape, shootings, stabbings, and possibly death. Murder in the workplace is now one of the fastest growing types of homicide in the United States. In 1, it was reported that an average of three people were murdered on the job every workday. There was also a report of at least 150 workers murdered in the workplace each year between the years 180 and 18. In 14, The Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) conducted a survey, which provide results from the point of view of human resource managers on violence in the workplace. The results of the survey were illuminating and gave a certain feel for violence in the workplace. According to the survey, when regarding violent incidents in the workplace, it stated that 1.% of all managers surveyed experienced at least one violent incident in the workplace. The survey also stated that most of the incidents were either employee to employee (1.54%), employee against supervisor (.1%), and customers against workers (.7%). There was also a reporting that the effects of violent incidents in the workplace increased stress levels, caused higher levels of paranoia, and increased distrust among employees.

Violence in the workplace can be attributed to angry customers, clients, and lovers or spouses of employees. Now, Americans are beginning to completely understand that workplace violence is a problem of national scope and can affect anyone. Workplace violence has many causes and can in turn effect not only the people involved but the company or organization involved as well, but there are also ways to prevent such mishaps from occurring.

There are several reasons for a person to commit such heinous crimes. One instance is that the assailant may have had deep effecting issues occurring in their life. Several studies have shown that these assailants often had a history of frustrating life experiences. Another instance is that many of the employees had grievances or disciplinary actions pending at the time of the attacks. The most common known reasons for violence in the workplace are revenge, jealousy, and financial gain. Some classic warning signs are chronically poor and inadequate work performance, conflicts with the supervisor and/or other employees, unfounded grievance and complaints, abuse of sick leave, and view of self as a “victim.” Any threat of violence from an employee, subtle or direct, should be taken seriously, then documented and investigated by the appropriate authorities.

Equally important is the termination process. The single biggest trigger of rampage-type attacks in the workplace by employees is termination. How the firing is done can make the difference between a routine event and a crisis. Lastly, there is negligent hiring and negligent retention. Negligent hiring and negligent retention are fodder for lawsuits when store management fails to screen the applicants it employs. Negligent hiring occurs when, prior to hiring, the employer knew or should have known that a particular applicant was not fit for the job. Failure to adequately screen applicants results in a liability for the employer. Negligent retention occurs when and employer becomes aware of an employee’s unsuitability or should be aware of it and fails to act on that knowledge. For example, a furniture store advertised for a deliveryman, and then hired a large, muscular man whose application indicated a history of delivering furniture. The store hired him without checking the information on his application. Later, the man raped a customer in her home when he came to deliver furniture. The women sued the store, charging negligent hiring because it failed to check out the man’s past. Had it checked, it would have found that the man was fired from his last delivery job because he made suggestive remarks to a female customer. He was also fired from the job before that because he touched a female customer in an inappropriate manner.

Two categories of victims emerge Supervisors and domestic partners. Although no organized central effort currently exists to collect data on the characteristics of these cases, many media reports cite the initial intended victim as a former or current supervisor. While at one time employers could fire employees with no fear of repercussions, they now must contend not only with avoiding employee-filed lawsuits but also with avoiding violence. Obviously, employers should handle terminations with concern for the well being of the person being fired and for the safety of those who remain employed.

Domestic disputes can also spill over into the workplace, accounting for some percentage of all workplace violence incidents, A 15 survey ranked domestic violence high on a list of security concerns and % of those surveyed stated that domestic violence is increasing as a corporate issue. For employees being stalked, the workplace is the one location where the victims can be found. An employee can easily change their phone number or address, but it’s not as easy to switch jobs. Such is the case with Francescia La Rose, and employee of State Mutual Life Insurance. While at work in her Houston office, her ex-boyfriend entered the reception area where La Rose worked and shot her in her head.

While these incidents have grave affects on victims and other employees, the company or organization also suffers terribly. It is estimated that violent crime in the workplace caused some 500,000 employees to miss 1,751,000 days of work annually, or an average of .5 days per incident. This missed work equated to approximately $55,000,000. Also, the company or organization may suffer due to lawsuits filed against the company. In one case, an Amtrak employee shot and seriously wounded his supervisor. The action, Smith vs. Amtrak (187) was brought because of Amtrak’s alleged failure to discipline the employee for previous actions that indicated violent tendencies. Because the employee had attacked other employees, the court ruled the verdict was foreseeable and held Amtrak responsible for negligent retention, awarding the supervisor $.5 million from Amtrak. Another landmark case in which negligent hiring was the main factor came in 17 with a $750,000 award against Avis Rent-A-Car. Avis management failed to check the application of a man before hiring him. The employee subsequently raped a co-worker. Had Avis checked the employee’s background, it would have discovered that during the time the applicant listed as being in high school and college, he was actually serving a three-year sentence in prison on a robbery conviction.

No company can completely prevent or eliminate workplace violence, but with proper planning and effective programs, the chance of such violent occurrences can be dramatically reduced. As in the case with domestic violence, because the courts consistently have held employers liable for protecting employees from know hazards and for the peace and efficiency of the workplace, employers should enact special security measures when their employees bring problems to their attention. There are also ways in which to prevent workplace violence during terminations. One way is for management to carefully recruit new employees and train and manage them well. Managers should repeatedly evaluate themselves in terms of helping the employee grow and change. Another way is to warn workers that they could possibly be terminated. Warn them of their unsatisfactory work and tell them what needs to be done to improve. Also, never layoff workers unexpectedly and with no warning or workers who have had good appraisals. Doing so hits the employee hard and causes anger. Another good tip is to remember to allow the employee’s esteem to stay high. Don’t attack them or put them down, and explain your decision, acknowledging their strengths. And last of all never write ex-employees bad references. Never try to ruin their chances with another career by stating how poorly they performed. Try to find something positive to say and give a balanced opinion of the individual. Prevention programs are excellent ways of dealing with workplace violence also. An effective workplace violence prevention program includes physical security, pre-employment screening, good termination practices, employee assistance programs, and a host of other options.

Although the epidemic of workplace violence is continuing to grow at alarming rates in the country and affecting the lives of many people, supervisors, managers and employees must remember to take in consideration how our actions will affect others.

For this paper I have chosen to review the film “Fried Green Tomatoes.” It is a tale of a small old town, its more popular residents, and a murder mystery told in retrospect by the main character Idggy. I was able to identify several social structures within the small town during the movies flashbacks as well as its modern day narrative setting. There were no government officials present, but a sheriff kept order amongst citizens. That same sheriff, however, partied with the people that he enforced the law upon. It was the typical small town environment where everyone knew each other and was generally friendly towards one another. There was also a bad guy who became important when it was found out that he was abusing his wife and trying to control her and her child.0

There were a lot of blacks in town that were not treated as fairly as the white people. I saw these structures affect the characters at different times throughout the movie. The black/white issue was present throughout, as we saw them being butlers, doing white’s chores, as well as other labor oriented tasks. The bad guy was confronted by nice town folk when it was found out that he abused his wife. As far as the sheriff, his role came into play when he had to arrest Idggy for the murder of the abusive man. The only time the structures were changed was when a black man, Big George, was accused of the murder. If Idggy hadn’t gone on trial, George would’ve had to. He definitely would have been hung, but Iddgy cared for him and took responsibility knowing that she could win and spare his life too. Norms that were portrayed are similar to the situations above. They are also similar to today’s small towns in some respects, such as being friendly and knowing everyone.

There are some big differences with other norms from today’s society. The race issue is the biggest difference. While there are still some problems today, we have come a long way as far as treating people more equal. The racial issue is the biggest social issue that the characters symbolized about our social world. Even though it has gotten better through the years, racism is still very present today. The biggest difference is that in today’s world it is a social deviance to be racist. Back then it was commonplace to treat people of color differently. That is where social conflict was depicted in this film. People of color were alienated and outcast from the white people’s world. The sad thing is how they dealt with it was just to accept it. Inside they may have felt differently, but their actions on the outside would have you think that they didn’t care and simply took what was handed to them. This conflict was not resolved during the film, nor is it completely resolved today in our society.

There was one scene where social control took place. That scene included the Klu Klux Klan. Although blacks were considered lower, the actions of the KKK were deviant and taken too far. The sheriff of the town disbanded their demonstration and actions, which included the caning of Big George. The KKK was also the most evident subculture represented in the film. Its social reality is very real because the KKK is still around today. They aren’t as prevalent as they were back then, but nevertheless they are still here. And, until we can rid our society of haters like them, gender, race, class issues and differences will remain.

Overall I enjoyed this film. For the most part it is a sweet film about an old railroad town in a quaint setting. The characters have some style and spunk and make the movie fun. I would recommend this movie to anyone looking for a funny, yet touching film on a free evening.

In my essay I choose to write about the ritual of baptism. When someone is baptized, they are being cleansed at an early age to live righteously. The story behind being baptized is that your being forgiven for your sins and any future sins that you commit. By taking Christ into your life, your being saved to be accepted in heaven.

Personally I think that every religion has a way of cleansing one for their sins and I believe that when you are cleansed you become closer to God. Sub-consciously your accepting intuition, gut, sincerity, and the ability to deal with other humans in a God-Like way. Even as a baby, God is becoming a part of you and those closest to you.

Baptism does differ from one root of Christianity to another. Such as in the Catholic religion, Baptism is something that has to be done when you’re a baby where as the Methodist religion it can be done as an adult. The Methodist religion makes the most sense to me when it comes to being baptized. How is one suppose to fully understand the concept of Baptism if you’re a baby. As and adult you are conscious of what’s going on around you and as a baby you don’t get that. With baptism you learn how to live the way God wants you to, your being cleansed and forgiven of your sins. By being baptized you learn what is right and what isn’t and are asked to live a righteous path. It sends you out into your everyday life with consciousnesses of God with you all the time and the intention that you’ll do well.

In conclusion, I believe that the ritual of being baptized is very important in the Christian religion. It’s an acceptance of Christ in your life and your belief that Jesus Christ died for your sins. Baptism is also and instructor on the way of living which is righteously and with God on your conscious.

Audiences tend to hear with their eyes. So when communicating in public, what your body says silently can mean the difference between successfully delivering your message and failing to make an impact. The total impact you make during a presentation will many times depend more on how you express yourself, than on what you actually say. An audience will naturally decode your message by interpreting it through tone, voice and body language. Surprisingly, studies indicate that the total impact of any public communication is 55 percent body language, including hand gestures, facial expressions, posture and movement. Tone, inflection and volume contribute to 8 percent of the total impact. Words themselves, or the verbal component of any presentation, only account for a mere 7 percent. Body language is also a fundamental part of leadership. It can suggest positive or negative attitudes, such as genuine empathy or total indifference. When former President George Bush pointed his finger at the American public during a televised address, it came across as an aggressive act. Audiences were profoundly affected by the negative visual message and, as a result, that gesture worked against him. Former President Ronald Reagan, however, was a master of body language. A former actor, Reagan was an adept public performer. When he made a presentation, he said he imagined chatting with old friends in a barbershop. Rather than saying the words you can trust me, his subtle gestures and gentle, fatherly tone conveyed the underlying message I can be trusted. Body language can work for anyone. The following tips can help you convey a positive and honest message through non-verbal communication Be conscious of body language -- it should match your verbal expressions and context of the situation. Remember, a non-verbal signal is not a complete message, but part of a pattern of signals that should have the same meaning. Your appearance is just as important as what you say A slouch can suggest lack of interest or enthusiasm, while standing straight with your weight balanced on each foot makes you look confident and relaxed. Stand or sit up straight. Dont slouch. · Use occasional, natural hand gestures to emphasize key points, but dont overdue it by waving your arms or pounding on a table. · Your eyes should be focused on the audience. Shifting your eyes and evading direct eye contact conveys impatience, discomfort, guilt or disinterest. Keep your gaze slightly upward. Darting eyes suggest deceit, while looking left may be interpreted as dishonesty. Looking down while you speak conveys low self-esteem. · Sit still and erect but relaxed, as a slight lean forward conveys energy and a positive attitude. Dont swivel, rock, lean, slump or swing your legs. Dont clasp your hands, fidget or grip your chair. Dont grind your teeth or tighten and loosen your jaw. · Running your fingers through your hair can indicate frustration. Dont drum on a chair or table with your fingers, jingle keys in your pockets, rustle papers, or toy with microphones, pencils, water glasses and clothing. · Listen intently, but dont nod as you listen to a negative or erroneous premise. Nodding is an involuntary response when you understand a question and are getting your key messages ready to deliver. Your audience, however, interprets the gesture as confirmation of the question. · Dont smile or laugh inappropriately, as these reactions convey guilty surprise. Be conscious of smiling to demonstrate your understanding of a question or paint, the gesture could be misconstrued. · Folding your arms in front of you is a sign of defensiveness. To project a more open, relaxed and confident demeanor, rest your arms on the sides of a chair or podium, or simply fold your hands in your lap. · Showing an open hand with palm up suggests honesty and sincerity.

i do not like school it is very stupid“7- 1- 4- - - ” announced the man on the radio.

“SWEET LORD!” I screamed in surprise, “I WON!”

I had just won the jackpot in the Pennsylvania lottery. I did not know what to do with myself. After running around my house for several minutes, I finally composed myself, got in my car, and was off to claim my prize.

“Wake up!” shouted my dad, growing frustrated.

Custom writing service can write essays on i hate school

“O jeez” I thought to my self, “I was just a multi-millionaire, now here I am in my normal 16-year old life.”

Disappointed, I tried to prolong the happiness I just felt as long as possible by staying in the comfort of my bed. I just could not part with my large fluffy pillow and my warm comforter. Something about my bed just would not let me leave, my eyelids grew heavy and I was eventually back to cashing my ticket.

“RENA MARLANIA, NOW!” ordered my father.

I decided he was right, as I forced my self to roll over. My warm bare feet hit the cold carpet and sent a chill through me. It was as if my surroundings were actually telling me not to leave my bed. Nevertheless, I stood up and clunked down the stairs with sheer clumsiness. As I trekked to the bathroom, I dreaded the day ahead of me and was yearning to go back to my cozy bed. Still hopelessly tired, I yawned and turned on the water. I hopped in and as I showered, I caught myself dozing off with visions of my lottery money still in my head. Once again, I snapped out of it, and came back to the real world. I reached for the shampoo, squirted it into my hand, then slathered the fragrant substance through my hair. As it foamed up, it ran down my face and stung my tired eyes.

“Would you hurry up in there?” interrogated my brother, “We have 15 minutes and I want to get a shower to, you know?”

I ignored him and finished my exhausting shower. I then grabbed a towel, wrapped myself up and stumbled back upstairs. Upon entering my room, I realized I did not know what I was to wear. I collapsed to my knees and quickly began rummaging through a mass of clothes laying on the floor. I had no hope of finding clothes this way, so I arose to my feet and began to search my closet for an outfit. I would pull a shirt from its hanger, give it an awkward look then toss it behind me and let it float gracefully to my cluttered floor. After I had done this several times I finally found a shirt that I could wear, grabbed jeans and got dressed. Remembering my brother was still in the shower, I walked as quietly as possible through my mother’s room and to her bathroom. I tried to close the door quietly behind me, even though it made a loud creak. I combed my wet matted hair, then proceeded to dry it.

The Universal Pictures film “October Sky”, directed by Joe Johnston and produced by Larry Franco and Charles Gordon, is based on a true story about four boys in the small, coal-mining town of Coalwood, West Virginia. The boys become intrested in rockets after viewing the Soviet satellite Sputnik soar through the sky one night. After many obstacles and opposition from others in their town, the boys were able to resist the usual future of mining.

Rated PG for thematic elements, alcohol use, and language, “October Sky” is basically a feel-good, happy-ending story. The main premises are to never stop working and to never give up even though you may fail or may be discouraged.

As a physicist, I am pleased that a movie like “October Sky” has been made so that more young people may become interested in rocketery and the physics and trig behind it. The boys used their intiative to learn how to build and fly rockets, and also learning a great deal of science and math that would later help them win the science fair and receive scholarships to college. When needing to prove that their rocket did not cause the forest fire, Homer Hickam (Jake Gyllenhaal) worked really hard to develop a physics position formula to determine where the rocket would have landed.

However while the movie had many opportunities to incorporate physics into many other areas of the plot the director seemed to avoid it. The main time that physics was pointed out was during the boring scene when Homer was explaining to his teacher and classmates about the flight of a rocket and how to determine where it would land, and to an ordinary person this might have been difficult to understand because Homer was speaking very quickly due to his excitement.

Custom Essays on Review of "October Sky" and the Physics Involved

Another thing that was discussed extensively was the basic anatomy of a rocket. The various parts and functions of rockets were described good. The motion of a propellant gas through the nozzle of a rocket was also explained. These things were necessary, yet sometimes seemed as if they could be a bit too much for the common audience.

Rocketery involves much more physics than was shown in the movie. Also, the idea that four high school boys were able to teach these things to themselves just by reading books is difficult to believe. The movie could have discussed the aerodynamic forces acting upon the rockets, or explained the flight of the rockets, in ways that could teach the audience something they might not have known. Perhaps the reasons why several of their rockets failed could have been better explained throughout the film, or how their technolgy developed over time as the boys learned knew things.

This movie had the potential to be an important learning tool in physics classrooms around the world. However, the topics that could have been discussed extensively, such as the physics of motion and forces, were avoided. The movie itself was good, but important realistic information was left out.

National provision of Football

Sam Hughes 1t-Physical Education

History

The Beautiful Game, as it is known across the world, was first organised in England in the 1800s. The World Cup, held every four years, is the most-watched sports event on Earth. There are more member-countries of FIFA, the sports governing body, than there are in the United Nations.

The modern game began in England but interest soon spread around Europe and other continents. FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football) was created in France in 104 as a recognition of this growth on an international level and is the football world’s governing body. Seven national associations - Belgium, Denmark, Spain, France, Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland - were the founders. FIFA launched the Olympic Football title in 14 and the World Cup in 10. The first ever FIFA World Cup for women was held in China in 11.

Governing Bodies

There are six continental confederations (Asian Football Confederation - AFC, Confederation Africaine de Football - CAF, Confederacion Norte-Centroamericany del Caribe de Futbol - CONCACAF, Union des Associations Europeenes de Football - UEFA, Confederacion Sudamericana de Futbol - CONMEBOL, Oceania Football Confederation - OFC) which organise club and national team competitions for their respective continents. The English Football Association is affiliated to UEFA. UEFA (Union des Associations Europeennes de Football) was founded on 15 June 154. In 18, the first UEFA Championship for national women’s teams was held.

Over 100 years after the formation of The Football Association, football is the most popular sport in the world, played by nearly 50 million people, including 40 million women. The numbers of spectators in the stadiums and of television viewers amounts to billions.

Rules and laws

The first time that a standard ball was specified was for a representative game between the (London) Football Association and Sheffield Association in March 1866, when it was stated that Lillywhites No. 5 must be used. Later, the Harrow Chequers club proposed that a fixed size of ball should be used for the FAs Challenge Cup Competition. The general agreement was that Lillywhites number 5 should be used. After the tape measure was produced, the law became a ball of average circumference of not less than 7 inches and not more than 8 inches This rule was extended to encompass all games in 188. A standard weight followed in 188 from 1 to 15 ounces. This was amended in 17 to become 14 to 16 ounces.

It was the practice on mainland Europe, at least until the 140s, to use a smaller sized ball, the number 4. The England team were somewhat bemused to be asked to play with a no. 4 in an international in Portugal in 147. They finally persuaded the referee to use a no. 5, but after Tommy Lawton had opened the scoring for England, the players found a no. 4 had been substituted! England won 10-0, so it didnt help the Portuguese much!

The Cambridge rules of 1848 stated that it needed three of the opponents side between a forward player and the goal for him to be onside. However, the Upping ham rules of 186 remained strictly against the forward pass; if the ball is kicked by his own side past a player, he may not touch it, or advance, until one of the other side has first kicked it, or one of his own side, having followed it up, has been able, when in front of him, to kick it. The first set of Football Association rules agreed with the Upping ham idea.

As football developed in the 1860s and 1870s, the offside law proved the biggest argument between the clubs. Sheffield got rid of the kick through by amending their laws so that one member of the defending side was required between a forward player and the opponents goal; the Football Association adopted the Cambridge idea of three! Finally, Sheffield came into line with the F.A., and three players were the rule until 15.

The change to two players rule lead to an immediate increase in goal scoring. 4,700 goals were scored in 1848 Football League games in 14/5. It rose to 6,7 goals (from the same number of games) in 15/6.

in11 the distance of the opponents from the ball was increased to ten yards. A further amendment prevented the kicker of a corner to play the ball a second time until it had been played by another player, even if it rebounded to him after striking the upright. It is said that Evertons Sam Chedgzoy took a corner and dribbled the ball through his opponents and scored, thus forcing the change of law!

In 17, a clause was added allowing a goal to be scored direct from a free kick (including corners).

The penalty kick law now applied to offences 18 yards from the goal line, but within an 44 yard-wide area known as the penalty area. The penalty spot was now fixed, 1 yards from the goal and in the centre. A goal area 0 yards wide by 6 yards deep was introduced to replace the two semi-circles. There was one last little change to make, in 17; originally players could stand anywhere along the 18 yard line while a penalty was taken; a section of a circle with a 10 yard radius was added to give the penalty taker a little more room for his run up.

Structures for officiating and coaching

The first stage involved in becoming a referee is to register with your local County Football Association.

The second stage is to attend a basic Referees Course. This will involve around 10 classroom-based training sessions, followed by a written and oral exam, on the Laws of Association Football. On passing the exams, you become Level 8 referee, if you are under 16 years of age, or Level 7 referee if you are over 16. You may then officiate on local amateur (parks) football.

If you wish to become a Level 6 referee you must serve one year at Level 7 before being eligible for promotion. Promotion is usually decided through assessment, attendance at further training, successful completion of a test on the Laws of the game and a satisfactory average mark over 0 completed matches. The same criteria would apply for promotion to Level 5.

An assessment is when a senior referee (or retired referee) watches you referee, and provides you with a constructive report on your performance. Assessors also send a confidential mark on the copy of the report which is sent to your County F.A.

Level 5 referees may then be eligible for promotion to Senior Competitions (Level 4 rising to Level 1). This may involve refereeing in a supply league - Level 4 (a senior amateur league at County level), and being an assistant referee in a contributory league - Level (a semi professional league). Further promotion would take you on to a Panel League - Level and eventually, on to the National list of Referees - Level 1. The final promotion would be on to the International list where we have currently 10 referees. However, certain age limits apply - minimum and maximum - and a fitness test must be passed before each season.

The first step to become a coach is to enrol on a F.A. Coaching Course. By getting on the coaching ladder individuals have the opportunity to progress up through the various F.A. Coaching qualifications and to enhance their skills and knowledge in coaching.

The Football Association runs a wide variety of coaching courses, at the local and national levels, from all ranges of experience.#

Grass roots

The National Game Division of The F.A. may not be the associations most glamorous department but, with 40 staff, and a serious budget to spend on footballs grass-roots, it is now the largest and one of the most important.

Thus, the National Game Division is channelling over £0m a year into the games grass-roots, as part of a process designed not just to halt but to reverse decades of decline. The result is little short of a revolution for grass-roots football, with the prospect of a new dawn, heralding higher standards and better pitches, changing-rooms and facilities for clubs across the land.

The man leading this revolution is Steve Parkin, who joined The F.A. as the first Director of the National Game Division in July 000, after spending 1 years with Mars, where he had risen to become a European marketing director.

The National Game, he explains, covers all football below the Football League from the Conference to the parks.

Initiatives for potential ‘stars’

The key initiatives underway are

F.A. Funding The FA will invest £45 million via the Football Foundation into facility improvement projects over the next years.

Register of English Football Facilities (REFF) a national survey of all footballing facilities in England is currently underway. This will help to assess and prioritise pitch and facilities investment.

Local Football Partnerships County-based forums have been set up, led by County FAs, to bring together football and other partners to create and prioritise football facility and development plans in their area.

Investment in facilities will be prioritised and aligned to The FA National Game Strategy, linking football development programmes and The FA Charter Standard Scheme.

The statement made by Rubin HurricaneCarter, Hate got me into this place, love got me out.

The statement means that throughout his term in prison he changed as a person and also a human being. As he arrived in prison he was what you call a bad ass and a rebel. I remember distinctly a scene involving Carter and the prison Warden. The Warden told Carter to put on the standard uniform for him to be identified in prison and Carter being the stubborn man he was at the time refused and was sentenced to I believe 0 days in the whole. Now the whole was a small very dark cell where you get fed once a day with bread and water.

After this he started to become friendly with a guard (unlike the guards in the Shawshank Redemption whos main objective was to hassle and give the prisoners a hard time. Carter talked with the guard and the guard had Carter hide his memoir in his pants when the investigated his cell for contraband. Carter finished his memoir and it was called The 16th Round from No.1 Contender to No. 4547 which was the number he was given when he entered prison.

Carter was a noble man after he was in prison for a while most of his time was spent on writing his book. He thought if he was behaving it was more of an incentive to not charge him with the murder which he wrongfully was accused of. He also made friends with some of the other guards including the Warden who he was at war with when he entered. They didnt start any problems with each other.

I believe The Hurricanes statement was true, when he came to prison he was hated by all, but through the movie peoples feelings changed from hate to love. They realized that and innocent man was going to be subjected to prison for a murder he did not commit. Hurricane Carter was released form prison and all accounts on him committing the murder were dropped.

The Absent Male in Little Women

No gentlemen were admitted writes Louisa May Alcott in Little Women to describe the all-female private

revue the March sisters perform. And as the novel progresses, one cannot help but wonder if this same

sentiment does indeed echo throughout the novel, as male characters are conspicuously absent while all the

Custom writing service can write essays on The absent male in little women

pivotal parts are played by the women characters.

This gender imbalance -- in that there are more female characters than male in Little Women -- is

especially obvious when male authority figures such as Mr March and Mr Lawrence are markedly absent

for most of the novel. When they do appear, they are in need of love and care from the women. Mr

Lawrence, who is nursing a broken heart over the death of his daughter, is healed by Beths gentle manners,

while Mr Marchs broken constitution is nursed back to health by his loving wife and daughters.

The only male character who appears prominently in Little Women is Laurie, who, although the richest and

most eligible bachelor for miles, is drawn to the motherly smile and warmth of the little cottage, despite the

luxuries of his mansion next door. John Brooke, Laurie¹s tutor and Meg¹s husband, too, is drawn to the

homey atmosphere of the March residence, having recently lost his mother.

In a bold move that differentiates Alcott from her contemporaries, the male characters in Little Women are

all not capable of providing sustenance to their womenfolk as they are incapacitated (either by a war injury,

an emotional scar, or an impoverished background). The women are thus forced to take on varied roles in

order to provide materially and emotionally for the family. They are the ones who shoulder the burden in

situations not unlike those of the Alcott family.

Is it by chance, or is premeditation, that most of Alcott¹s novels feature an absent father? And when he does

reappear, he is very often silent, ill or injured. It is obvious Alcott has problems portraying strong male

characters, probably from the fact that she hadn¹t seen too many of them.

Furthermore, Alcott is not able to describe a situation where love is emoted expressively from men. In all

her novels, the male characters disappoint -- in one way or the other. In many ways, they are very similar to

her own father. Bronson Alcott was a man who preferred dreaming, shirking his fatherly and husbandly

duties, and was prone to going on extended trips without his family. Bronson Alcott deserted his family for

months at a time purportedly to earn a living. But he was not very successful in that area. Once he came

back with a new scarf and a dollar in his pocket to a hungry family waiting for the money to buy some

much needed bread. He handed over the token that he was paid to Alcott with the careless remark ³Well,

Louisa, there¹s little money, but I had a great time and was asked to come again.²

In Little Women, the appearance of these hapless males in search of a mother figure to comfort them

celebrates the Good Mother, a role played by Marmee and her four daughters. The Good Mother figure, as

explained by French feminist writer Helene Cixous in her manifesto The Laugh of the Medusa, is a woman

who is an omnipotent, generous dispenser of love, nourishment and plenitute. And in a departure from the

patriachal system that she grew up in, Alcott proclaims women as the source of life, power, energy and

advice. In Good Wives (pages 11 - 1), Marmee says to Meg, beginning with May I speak quite freely,

and will you remember that its mother who blames as well as mother who sympathises? before

concluding with Dont shut yourself up in a bandbox because you are a woman, but understand what is

going on, and educate yourself to take your part in the worlds work, for it all affects you and yours. Then

later on in Good Wives (page 18), Jo exclaim about Marmee How goo!

d she is to me! What do girls do who havent any mothers to help them through their troubles?

Alcotts portrayal of a strong mother figure is no surprise considering that she was very much influenced by

her mother, and much of her journals was annotated by her mother who read them and made notes within

them. Just as Abba Alcott was very caught up with women¹s rights, so too was Alcott. The suffrage

movement, equality in housework, and other talk of independence for women excited them both who had

laboured so hard under a shiftless and irresponsible man.

In Alcotts novels, the adult woman is not only mother, wife, daughter, or loyal friend, she is also nurse,

governess, seamstress, writer, artist or actress. With the absence of a father in the house, womanhood -- and

in particular, motherhood -- is not obscured by the patriachal values which dominate our culture.

Motherhood is thus not seen as a full-time, life-long routine job, but as an inevitable and natural situation

which allows the woman to combine her maternal chores with her other interests. A prime example is

Marmee who not only runs a household single-handedly, but also indulges in charitable acts around town.

And to relieve Marmee from the drudgery of household chores, is yet another woman -- Hannah Mullet, in

the form of the maid.

The very absence of men in Alcott¹s novel reflects her own interests. A staunch believer of women¹s rights,

Alcott was raised in a family where women wield the power. As such, Alcott allows her female characters

contact with the outside world. Not for them the cloistered world of the nunnery, they are adventurous and

they travel the world, often with another womans help. In Good Wives, Amy travels to Europe with Aunt

Carrol, courtesy of Aunt March, who controls the purse-strings.

Alcotts heroines demand independence, and at times even modest adventure. But in keeping with the

period that she lived in, such independence is not an alternative to domesticity, but as a necessary

precondition to its success. It is only while she is travelling in Europe and having been exposed to a wide

variety of people and experiences that Amy begins to see Laurie in a different light and comes to the

realisation that she is in love with him all along. This is an about turn for Amy who had originally

contemplated marrying Fred Vaughn as he is rich.

Women in Little Women are allowed to be impulsive. No sooner is the thought in their head, then the deed

is at hand. In Alcott¹s novel, her characters lead lives that are more impetuous and daring than her own.

Alcott thinks of selling her hair; Jo does it, in a moment of self-sacrifice for her father.

Thats my contribution towards making Father comfortable, and bringing him home!

My dear, where did you get it? Twenty-five dollars? Jo, I hope you havent done anything rash?

No, its mine honestly; I didnt beg, borrow, or steal it. I earned it; and I dont think youll blame

me, for I only sold what was my own.

As she spoke, Jo took off her bonnet, and a general outcry arose, for all her abundant hair was cut

short.

Little Women, pages 10 & 11

Without strong male characters to patronise them, Alcotts women are given full reign to be strong and

decisive. Marmee is portrayed as a strong character who is able to take charge and delegate duties even in

her hour of grief. She is brave even without money and husband at her side. She and her four daughters

survive without a husband and father to provide for them. On the contrary, they have to seek the means to

bring him home after he is stricken ill while at war, and following that, help him regain his health.

For a family as proud as the Alcotts, it must have been difficult for the women to survive on handouts from

neighbours and friends. As a result, Alcott grew up with a warped idea of men and marriage. Like Marmee,

Alcott would never dream of begging her relatives for money. Yet, Marmee did borrow from Aunt March

for the sake of her husband -- money with which to travel to her husbands bedside. Im not too proud to

beg for Father; he shall have the best of everything, Marmee proclaims in Little Women (page 0). It is

noteworthy at this point, that it is the man who needs the comfort of the woman, and that it is a woman¹s

money which enables Marmee to effectively provide for her husband.

It is also Aunt Marchs will which enables Jo and Professor Friedrich Bhaer to set up home in Plumfield.

Professor Bhaer, pleasant man though he may be, is in no position to provide for Jo, being an impoverished

-- albeit cultured -- professor. Therefore, Aunt Marchs legacy has made all sorts of joyful things possible.

(Good Wives, p5)

Housework, a traditionally female occupation, is not trivialised in the novel. Instead, it is elevated to new

importance. Alcott does a good job of proving that domestic work is real work, and that women at home

have a vital role to play in the well-being of the home¹s occupants. Take for example the episode in Little

Women when the March sisters decide to take a vacation from housework. The result a messy house, a

dead canary and four grumpy and unhappy young ladies. Cooking, in addition to housework, is deemed a

very necessary skill, as without sustenance, (hu)mankind can hardly function.

Alcott accepted that women¹s traditional commitment is to family and home life; yet she also demanded

individuality as her natural rights. Without a man to contradict her, Jo is able to fully explore her

imagination. She writes dramatic stories which she sells to earn her keep. And as long as she manages to

keep the Weekly Volcano away from the males in her life, she makes an honest living out of it. However,

Professor Bhaers disapproval makes her hard-earned money lay rather heavily on her conscience.

Notwithstanding the hurdles placed in her writing path, Jo still manages to be the most intellectually

fulfilled of the four sisters -- in particular, Meg who seems all lost in motherhood and wifedom, and whose

life is thereafter measured as somebody¹s wife and mother.

Without a strong male focus in her life, Alcott grew up understanding girls better than boys, although she

once announced ³I was born with a boy¹s bib and tucker.² Her understanding of what makes girls tick

contributes to the success of her novels for girls. Girls are able to identify with her characters as the female

voices are more clearly defined. The males seem but mere ornaments around which the girls interact.

Causes of World War I

World War I was a result of leaders’ aggression towards other countries, which was supported by the rising nationalism of the European nations. Economic and imperial competition and fear of war prompted military alliances and an arms race. This further escalated the tension that contributed to the outbreak of war. Nearly 10 million troops were killed during the war. World War I involved more countries and caused more destruction than any other war except World War II. The leader of the Russian Communists Vladimir Lenin once put it well by describing World War I as an “imperialist struggle.” He believed the inevitable result of competition among the capitalist nations to dominate the world’s markets.

There was rising nationalism in the European nations. At the settlement of the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Germany and Italy were left as divided states. This angered strong nationalists, and they began to start movements and revolutions. These led to the unification of Italy in 1861 and Germany in 1871. The Franco Prussian War of 1870-71 also helped solve these problems. Conflicting national groups in Austria Hungry and the Balkans raised tensions for war.

Imperialism was a large factor in the increase in rivalry in Europe. The Industrial Revolution caused an increase in manufacturing. As a result to this rise in manufacturing, Great Britain, Germany, and France needed foreign markets. These countries competed against each other for economic expansion in Africa. The clash of Germany against Great Britain and France in North Africa caused several crises that foreshadowed the war. The crumbling of the Ottoman Empire in the Middle East gave hope to Austria- Hungry, the Balkans, and Russia.

After the Franco Prussian War, there were two opposing alliances developed by Bismarckian diplomacy. The Three Emperors League was formed in 187 to diplomatically isolate France. Bismarck formed this alliance with Germany, Russia, and Austria Hungry. Bismarck formed the Triple Alliance in 188 with Germany, Italy, and Austria Hungry, to take advantage of Italian resentment towards France. Italy had pledged that they would stay neutral if war broke out between Austria Hungry and Russia. Germany and Austria pledged to keep Italy safe from France if Italy stayed neutral. Austria Hungry and Russia began to be suspicious of each other over conflicts in the Balkans. Bismarck repaired the damage it had done to its alliances by making a Reinsurance Treaty with Russia, allowing both to stay neutral if the other was at war.

These Bismarckian alliances collapsed in 180, when Kaiser William II fired Bismarck. Great Britain, France, and Russia formed an informal coalition known as the Triple Entente. This group now countered the Triple Alliance of Germany, Italy, and Austria Hungry. International tension was greatly increased by the division of Europe into two armed camps.

The tension resulting from the division of Europe resulted into an arms race. Germany was the leader of military organization and efficiency, and many countries copied their techniques. Technological and organizational developments led to the formation of general staffs with precise plans for attack. France and Russia were allies, France being weaker than Russia. The German von Schlieffen Plan was to attack France before Russia in the event of war with Russia. This drew more countries into the war than necessary. Armies and navies were greatly expanded. The standing armies of France and Germany doubled in size between 1870 and 114. Naval expansion was extremely competitive between Germany and Great Britain. International rivalries caused the arms race to continually feed on itself.

Friction between the armed and divided European countries resulted in several crisis in Morocco and the Balkans that nearly ended in war. Germany announced its full support of independence for Morocco. Morocco was an African colony that Britain had given France in 104. With the help of Britain war was avoided, and France was allowed to make Morocco a French protectorate.

The rising economic problems in Europe caused tension. Asia and the Near East had economic and diplomatic pressure. There was economic concessions and extra territorial privileges. Some examples of this were the Ottoman Empire and China that were the most vulnerable. Japan was modernizing rapidly and India was firmly in British hands. Europe was determined to keep a strong economy. Economy gave colonial rule a reproach to democracy. Economy encouraged feelings of national and racial superiority. There was now materialism in technology and science. These changes in economy caused corruption in European countries.

Another conflict was created by the Austria Hungarian annexation of the former Turkish province of Bosnia in 108. Serbia threatened war on Austria Hungry as a result of the Greater Serbian movement. Russia joined with Serbia, and Germany joined with Austria Hungry. The beginning of World War I was postponed because Russia backed down. This incident greatly strained the relationship between Austria Hungry and Serbia.

A changing society began to cause problems throughout Europe. Human Welfare had increased drastically. Surgery and anesthetics had been perfected. The average human life span was now longer. Victorian middle class morality was at a steady decline. Literacy was becoming more common, and spreading rapidly. Many peace movements were being created. The imbalance of society played a key role in the lashing out of people. The Aristocrats were the highest social class and had a sense of power over lower class citizens. The working people were constantly neglected. Society now had problems that could not be easily resolved.

A second Moroccan crisis occurred in 111 when Germany sent in warships to retaliate upon French supremacy in Morocco. Germany claimed that France was violating the agreement at Algeciras. Britain again backed France and gave Germany stern warnings. Germany agreed to let France rule Morocco in exchange for part of the French Congo. The Balkans Wars went on from 11-11, between the Balkan States and the Turks. Tensions between Serbia and Austria Hungry increased when Austria Hungry forced Serbia to give up some of its gains.

Europe had finally reached its breaking point when Archduke Francis Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo, Bosnia. He was the heir to the Austria Hungarian throne. A Serbian nationalist belonging to an organization known as the Black Hand assassinated him. The Black Hand was a secret, patriotic society known as the Narodna Odbrana. The group was founded in Serbia in 108, and its intent was to strengthen a spirit of nationalism. Immediately following the assassination Germany pledged its full support to Austria Hungry. Germany pressured Austria Hungry to declare war on Serbia. France strengthened its backing of Russia. Austria Hungry was now convinced that the Serbian government had conspired against them. Austria Hungry issued Serbia an unacceptable ultimatum. Serbia consented to this almost entirely.

This consent did not satisfy Austria Hungry. Austria Hungry declared war on Serbia on July 8, 114. On July , Russia ordered a partial mobilization of their troops only against Austria Hungry and in support of Serbia. This escalated into a general mobilization. The Germans threatened war on Russia on July 1, unless Russia agreed to demobilize. France declined Germanys’ ask for help in the event of war between Germany and Russia. France said that they would act in their own interest and began to mobilize. On August 1, Germany declared war on Russia. Two days later, Germany declared war on France. Germany invaded Belgium to attack France. This violated Belgium’s official neutrality. This prompted Britain to declare war on Germany. World War I had now begun.

After the war had ended, all the countries involved had their own reasons for why they entered the war. The Allies claimed that war had been “imposed upon them” by German aggression. The Germans defended themselves by saying they had been gradually encircled by hostile powers and they declared war to avoid being crushed. These are just speculations, but the true fault cannot be put on one single country. The whole European system is responsible for World War I.

The Grendel Project

The story of Grendel opens in the season of Spring. The first communication the reader sees of Grendel is when he tries to scare away the Ram. Grendel fails in doing so because it is mating season for Ram and he will not be scared away. Grendel is a very curious creature. He wants to be understood by society. He has no direction from a mother or father figure. His has little to no family life.

Grendel lives with his mother in a cave. He and his mother do not speak to each other. Grendel’s mother eats and sleeps all day everyday. She is nonsocial and has no communication towards anyone. I feel as though Grendel is sad because he doesn’t have a close relationship with his mother. In fact, Grendel doesn’t have much of a relationship with his mother whatsoever. Grendel’s mother is not a role model at all. She is a mother to a son and shows lack of respect towards her son.

Grendel has no guided direction from an experienced individual such as many, which surround my life. Grendel has to learn everything on his own and learn from scratch. In order to succeed is Grendel’s world he must outsmart everyone or he “loses.” Grendel is a creature in which is undoubtedly misunderstood. No one has ever got to know Grendel. No one has ever sat down with Grendel and had a conversation with him. No one knows what he feels, thinks, smells, touches, senses, etc. Society makes all these false accusations against Grendel when in fact they are just plain ignorant. They are too stubborn to look through the outside and take a deeper look inside at who and what Grendel really is.

I think Grendel is a very caring and compassionate creature. I admire his moral views such as how he doesn’t kill or eat deer. I think that is a sign in which Grendel expresses his thoughtful and caring state of mind. He shows respect towards nature and his surrounding atmosphere.

Grendel is a vigorous beast that needs a good nutritious diet. He eats other animals throughout the forest. Grendel will never kill or eat a deer. He feels as though deer are too precious. Grendel prefers to eat cow. Grendel sometimes goes to the Mead Hall during the night. There he kills and eats human beings. Every time Grendel journeys to Hrothgar’s Mead Hall he knocks the front door down in order to enter. The people who live there have had to replace the door between 50 or 60 times.

When Grendel travels he leaves at night and returns by dawn. I think he does this because it is easier to travel without being noticed. It is easy for Grendel to escape into the night if he encounters any trouble as well. When Grendel first encounters man he realizes that he is not alone as a creature that is capable of complex thought. This is first brought to his attention when he injures his ankle by the bull.

As time moves on throughout the book Grendel feels that the men are evil because they kill animals for sport instead of killing for survival like Grendel does. He notices that men kill each other and steal from each other. He thinks this is terrible. Grendel views all this from the sidelines as the men all help to build a village. Grendel discovers that the men have been at war with each other ever since he’s been spying on them.

The Shaper is introduced as a character who plays a harp and sings tunes of what is going on in the story. The Shaper is an intelligent character. His sentence structure and story development skills intrigues Grendel to listen to his stories. Grendel strongly believes in hope that “man” will change their negative point of view of him. Grendel’s hope fails. At the end of Chapter 4, Grendel approached the men’s village in peace and with action they attacked him. I feel as though Grendel is loosing hope in “man.” Man believes so strongly that Grendel is this monstrous beast that is a disease and virus towards the human society. I think Grendel needs to find ways to overcome man’s opinion of him or else he will soon be in great danger if man overpowers Grendel.

O Death, Where is Thy Sting?

One thing that is certain in mortal life is that it will come to an end for everyone. There are no exceptions; everyone will meet their end. Death will place its cold unmerciful hand into every mortal’s life at the time appointed by God. Regardless of religion and beliefs, every person will give an account for their life on earth and what they have done or not done with Jesus Christ and his offer of salvation. John Donne addresses his final destination in his Holy Sonnet VI. This sonnet entitled “This is My Play’s Last scene,” is Donne’s testimony of the peace he has found with the nearness of death in his life. Having an understanding of the author’s difficult past will assist in properly interpreting this piece of literary art.

John Donne was born into a Roman Catholic household in London, England. Donne’s father died when he was very young leaving he and his siblings to be raised by their mother. After having some difficulties in school, Donne secretly married the daughter of a nobleman and converted from Catholicism to Anglicanism. These choices made for an extremely trying and difficult life for the aspiring writer. More troubles following John Donne throughout the remainder of his life, including the death of his wife at a very young age. Awareness of these events helps to provide a deeper insight into the mind of the author and the perspective that he held on life. His difficult background can be heard through his work.

The theme of this poem is Donne addressing and accepting the nearing completion of his mortal life. Donne realized that his years left on earth were dwindling, and he wanted to clearly state what was going to happen to him upon the event of his death. The last portion of the poem speaks of the ultimate destination of sin and evil when it is finally put to rest. The separation from evil and death seems to give John Donne all the reason he needs to be at total peace in the face of death.

This piece was written in the early 1600s to the general public. The work was a written testimony of the faith that Donne had in the security of his future in Jesus Christ. The wording used in the poem makes it clear that John was writing to an audience that he assumed was familiar with the biblical concept of redemption through Jesus Christ and an eternity in Heaven. The poem was written in the first person perspective. Donne was speaking about the inevitable nearness of death. This may have been an occasion where Donne was writing down his own thoughts and reflections on life rather than trying to create a literary masterpiece.

The format of the piece is fourteen straight lines that are not divided in any way. The poem has a nice even flow as it is read through. Every sentence rhymes with at least one other sentence in the poem. The lines range from to 1 syllables, according to their placement in the piece. The language used in the poem is relatively simply and Donne avoids the use of hard to understand or obscure words. Donne cleverly uses simple language to create a very intricate and detailed picture in a very short time. Some of the language found in this Holy Sonnet has an old English flavor, showing the age of the piece.

Several words and phrases are found in this sonnet that seem to be of particular importance and significance. The first word that stands out is found repeatedly in lines one through four. “This is my play’s last scene; here heavens appoint / My pilgrimages last mile; and my last race / Idly, yet quickly run, hath this last pace, / My span’s last inch, my minutes last point” (Donne 1-4). The word “last” is repeatedly used in these lines, giving it undeniable significance to the setting of the poem. Without question, Donne is referring to the completion of his life. Other significant words used in this piece include “death, earth-born, hell,” and “evil” (Donne 5, 10, 11, 1). These powerful words assist in setting the context for the poem.

Holy Sonnet VI opens with Donne explaining the situation in which he finds himself. He is standing at deaths door, acknowledging the end of his mortal life. The poem then moves into an account of his death as he foresees it, and tells of the effects on his mortal body. The author ends the piece by telling that death, and sin and evil will all be put to rest and away from him as he ascends into the presence of God. This conclusion offers a sense of closure and a feeling of satisfaction for the reader.

This poem can be easily applied to daily Christian living as believers are constantly tried and tested through both life experiences and the experience of death in their own lives. John Donne clearly had his faith in Jesus Christ regarding his future on the other side of the touch of death. Donne had applied the principle found in I Corinthians 155. This text says, “O death, where is thy sting? O grave where is thy victory?” (Bible). John Donne was ready and willing to face death, knowing that his fate was held in the hands of the Lord Jesus Christ and that he would be separated from evil forever. It should be every Christians desire to be in a place where they are also ready to face death knowing that they are in the Lord’s watchful care.
