In the short story The Story of the Hour the main character, Mrs. Mallard, changes her attitude from hope to disappointment after she discovers her husband has died. The author, Kate Chopin, illustrates this change through tone, diction, and imagery.

The tone of the story starts off sad with the news of a death. Mrs. Mallard’s husband died in an accident. She weeps for him until the feeling of grief passed. Mrs. Mallard goes to her bedroom, where it is light from the open window, and she sits in a comfortable, roomy armchair. The tone suddenly lightens. She feels as if she is free from her husband now that he is dead. Then her sister goes to her bedroom and they walk downstairs where their friend, Richards, was waiting. At that moment the front door opens and Brently Mallard walks through the door. The tone changes, this time negatively when Mrs. Mallard sees her husband and she suddenly dies.

The way the main character is introduced, Mrs. Mallard, indicates that she belongs to her husband. It’s not until later in the story when you find out her first name, Louise. This contributes to her feeling “free” from Mr. Mallard. Later when she is in her room she feels something coming to her. She is waiting for “it” but she doesn’t know what “it” is. Then she finally realizes what “it” is. She is free from her husband. Her sister, Josephine thinks that Louise will make herself ill. Instead, she feels as if she is drinking an elixir of life. Once she has opened the door there was a “feverish triumph in her eyes”. This oxymoron foreshadows that she will be sick. Once she sees her husband, the doctors say she died from “heart disease”, but if she had heart disease, she would have died earlier when her pulse beat faster and the blood flowing through her body warmed and relaxed her.

When Mrs. Mallard goes to her room the imagery is optimistic. The window is open and she is sitting in a comfortable armchair. Out of the window she sees new spring life, smells the rain that was in the air, and hears sparrows singing. In the sky there are patches of blue, which means knowledge and understanding. She has an understanding of what is in her future without her husband. These images help form the hopeful tone to the story.

With her story, Everyday Use, Alice Walker is saying that art should be a living, breathing part of the culture it arose from, rather than something from which to be observed from a distance. To make this point, she uses the quilts in her story to symbolize art; and what happens to these quilts represents her theory of art. The quilts themselves, as art, are inseparable from the culture they arose from. The history of these quilts is a history of the family. The narrator says, In both of them were scraps of dresses Grandma Dee had worn fifty and more years ago. Bits and pieces of Grandpa Jarrells Paisley shirts. And one teeny faded blue piece, about the size of a matchbox, that was from Great Grandpa Ezras uniform that he wore in the Civil War. So these quilts, which have become a valued possession passed through succeeding generations, not only represent the family, but also are an integral part of the family. Walker is saying that true art not only represents its culture, but also is an inseparable part of that culture. The manner in which the quilts are treated shows Walkers view of how art should be treated. Dee desires the quilts for their financial and artistic value. But theyre priceless! she exclaims, when she learns that her mother has already promised them to Maggie. Dee argues that Maggie is backward enough to put them to everyday use. Indeed, this is how Maggie views the quilts. She values them for what they mean to her as an individual. This becomes clear when she says, I can member Grandma Dee without the quilts, implying that her connection with the quilts is personal and emotional rather than financial and artistic. She also knows that the quilts are an active process, kept alive through continuous renewal. As the narrator points out, Maggie knows how to quilt. The two sisters values concerning the quilt represent the two main approaches to art appreciation in our society. Art can be valued for financial and artistic reasons, or it can be valued for personal and emotional reasons. When the narrator snatches the quilts from Dee and gives them to Maggie, Walker is saying that the second set of values is the correct one. Art, in order to be kept alive, must be put to Everyday Use -- literally in the case of the quilts, figuratively in the case of traditional art. Alice Walker is using the quilts, and the fate of those quilts, to make the point that art can only have meaning if it remains connected to the culture it sprang from. Her story itself is a good example Walker didnt write it to be observed under a glass case, judged artistically, and sold to the highest bidder; she meant it to be questioned, to be explored, to be debated -- in short, to be put to Everyday Use.

Everyday Use

We always carry something to remind us who we are or where we come from. There are some people trying to forget who they are or where they come from. But there are also some people who will never forget their roots and their culture. They even value a little thing that has a significant meaning because it reminds them who they are. The story “Everyday Use”, written by Alice Walker, is not simply about the quilts but also about the culture where narrator comes from. The story presents the conflict about how the quilts, apart of culture, should be treated. Should it be hang on the wall or should it be put to “everyday use”.

“Everyday Use” is narrated by a woman who describe herself as working hard has “a large, big-boned with rough, a man-working hands.” She has enjoyed a rugged farming life in the country. She has two daughters, Maggie, her younger daughter, and Dee, her older daughter. The story starts with the even that Dee will pay her and Maggie a visit. Dee had left home for quite a long time. She and Maggie were very happy to see Dee and everything was fine until Dee saw the quilt. The quilt was handmade by her mother, Dee and Maggie’s grandmother. By the time, it has been quilted again and again by her mother and her to keep it new. It has become the heirloom of the family. Besides, they have another quilt as well, but it was made by machine and Dee was not interested in

Ho

it. Dee wanted the handmade one. Now the conflict occurs, should she give it to Dee or Maggie, which she has promised to give her. A decision should be made.

To Dee and Maggie, this quilt is precious but they have totally different point of view on why they see it precious. Dee covets the quilt for its financial and aesthetic value. “But they are priceless” she exclaims, when she learns that her mother has already promised it to Maggie. Dee said that Maggie is “backward enough to put it to everyday use.” Indeed, this is how Maggie views this quilt. She values it for what it means to her as an individual. This becomes clear that her connection with the quilt is personal and emotional rather than financial and aesthetic. She values it greatly because it gives her a connection with her grandmother, her family when she sees the quilt. But she is willing to give it up to Dee and still “remember grandmother” without the quilt. To her the quilt is not important, it is much more important that she has the connection with her family from deep inside her mind, her heart.

The quilt, a piece of art which represent the family, the culture can be valued for financial reasons, or it can be valued for personal and emotional reasons. Snatching the quilt from Dee, the woman gave it to Maggie and offered Dee the machine stitched one, the lady told us which set values is correct, it must be put into “Everyday use.”

This story is abou how the quilt shout be treated. Should it be used or hung on the wall. And I absolutely agree with what the narrator did which was give it to Maggie. If the narrator gave it to Dee, she would frame the quilt and hang it on the wall, distancing it from her present life and aspiration, to put them to everyday use would be to admit her status as a member of her old fashioned family. It is right to give the quilt to Maggie because the quilt is an active process, kept alive through continuous renewal and Maggie knows how to quilt. Not only will she use the quilt, but also she will go on making more and pass them down to next generation.

In the two books Stone Angel and A Jest of God written by Margaret Laurence, both of the main characters strive for freedom and independence. Rachel Cameron, from A Jest of God is a thirty-four year old, paranoid and pessimistic teacher who always undervalues herself. While Hagar Shipley, is an elderly woman who is so full of pride that is clouds her judgment and has made her spend most of her life fighting for independence. Both characters illustrate the importance of being true to one’s self, the importance of self-realization and the obstacles and sacrifices that come with gaining independence. Once becoming true to one’s self by self-realization, reaching freedom and independence requires one to break away or overcome family members and their wishes.

The main characters in the two novels illustrate the importance of being true to one’s self in gaining independence by showing how slowly and difficult it is to solve conflicts without being true to one’s self. Both Hagar and Rachel were not true to themselves for most of their lives, slowing down their process of gaining independence. Hagar Shipley was never true to herself due to her pride. Hagar was afraid to show that she enjoyed something since she would supposedly lose pride. Hagar would say things she does not mean but had to say due to her pride, when taken into the retirement home which was ‘very nice’ she would say “I couldn’t care for a Barracks” (Stone Angel, 56) and would later understand that she should have not said that. Similarly, Rachel Cameron did not say the things she meant to say and never expressed her true emotions not because of pride, but on the contrary, she was generally paranoid having many doubts in herself and was afraid to hurt or offend others. She would say, “I’m sorry” and then immediately think to herself “I am not sorry one bit” (Jest of God, 78). As well both characters in a way deceived themselves since they assumed the worst of people and stuck to that assumption until that assumption was disproved. Hagar explicitly stated that as soon as she saw a new person she would immediately determine if she liked a person or not. Hagar had her own skewed and judgmental opinions on certain characters, like she claimed that Doris a fat woman without any taste. While Rachel always made up the worst possible intentions of people and thought about them, even an innocent laugh of children brought on thoughts like “Why did they laugh? There isn’t anything to be frightened of, in that laughter. Why should they have meant anything snide by it?” (A Jest of God 18). Neither of the characters were true to themselves, they rarely said what they meant and saw people as they were, this did not help solving their conflicts but instead prolonged them.

The best way to become true to one’s self is through self-realization, which is a prime asset in attaining true freedom and independence. After attaining self-realization, one becomes true to one’s self and accept what he is. Only at the end of Stone Angel and Hagar’s life did Hagar reach self-realization. Because of this Hagar has been seeking ‘true’ freedom again and again throughout her life. Once Hagar thought she achieved freedom, she was once again unhappy and would seek it again. Due to her desire to be independent and her artificial pride, Hagar ran away from her father by marrying Bram. Once she settled with Bram, then once again her pride pushed her to seek independence and to ‘save’ John from Bram. Lastly she decided to run away from Marvin and Doris thinking that she is independent and strong enough. She did not realize that she ‘is’ in fact a 0-year-old woman that cannot possibly survive on her own. Could Hagar have reached a self-realization earlier in her life, all her ‘fights’ for independence, which could ‘all’ be better classified as ‘hasty decisions’, would be unnecessary. Rachel as well, came to a point of self-realization near the end of the book. Unlike Hagar, Rachel had a chance to utilize this self-realization to the fullest extent, to bring forth many new and positive changes to her life. She finally realized that not all people are evil and malicious as she thought they were, that people wish some friendliness from her while she is “conjuring up dragons”(Jest of God 16) about them. She decided to take her life in her own hands and not her mother’s, and to move out from Manawaka to Vancouver when she could start a new life and a new begging with a new job. As contrasted by the two books self-realization is an excellent asset in gaining freedom and independence.

Breaking off from family members and their wishes is the hardest obstacle in attaining independence, but is the most crucial one. The biggest problem in attaining independence is the family members, their concerns and wishes for your future. Generally speaking your family tries to do what they ‘think’ is best for you, or in more complex situation, what is best for everyone. Alas that may not coincide with your wishes or plans, just like Hagar did not like the idea of Jason running her life and telling her whom she must or mustn’t marry or even talk to. Neither did Hagar liked the thought of John becoming like Bram, so once again she separated from family to gain independence. The concerns of the family also play a role; in both novels a close family member of the main character has serious heart problems. Hagar was being forced to move to a retirement house and lose her supposed pride and independence because Doris had heart problems and could no longer take care of Hagar. Similarly Rachel’s possibly attention-hungry mother used her weak heart condition to manipulate Rachel and by that cripple her social and real life. Upon reaching self-realization Rachel took over the authority and stated that she wanted to move to Vancouver, her mother, who was completely against moving or anything positive that happened to Rachel once again used her poor heart condition to claim that her heart cannot take the move, upsetting Rachel’s plans. But Rachel, overcoming the problem just took the risk. Overcoming or breaking away from family, their concerns or their wishes is sometimes a painful but a very necessary step in gaining independence.

In the novels The Stone Angel and A Jest of God by Margaret Laurence, the life and journeys of the two main characters can be used to show a thematically connection between the two novels. Hagar Shipley and Rachel Cameron illustrate that the path to independence has many obstacles and necessary steps that one must undergo. Either through self-discovery or self-realization, one must become true to themselves and others, and from there break away or overcome family members and their wishes.

The Semi-Formal was next week, and Jason still didn’t have a date. There’s a girl he’s wanted to ask for a while, but he hasn’t built up enough courage to actually do it. One would describe Jason as being a bit of a nerd, but he wasn’t bad looking at all. The only thing he was lacking was confidence. Brittany, Jason’s crush, could definitely be considered as being high on the popularity scale, but for some reason she didn’t have a date either. As Jason and his best friend Patrick were on their way to class, they noticed Brittany was standing at her locker. No one else was around, so Jason figured this was as good a time as any to give it a shot.

“Go on Jay, bite the bullet. What have you got to lose?” Patrick said encouragingly as he gave Jason a slight push in her direction.

“Okay, okay, keep your pants on.” Then with a deep breath, he said hopefully, “Here goes nothing.” As started to walk in Brittany’s direction, he went over what he should say in his head. ‘Hi Brittany, would you like to be my date for the dance?’ That didn’t sound too bad, he thought to himself. Before he knew it, he was standing right beside her. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. He could feel his body tensing. She turned to him with a confused look on her face.

“Hi,” she said in an awkward tone. Still, Jason couldn’t say a word. His face turned bright red, as he quickly turned around and walked away. ‘What the heck’s the matter with me?’ he asked himself angrily. He walked over to Patrick who was waiting for him in the corner.

“Well, how’d it go?” he asked. Jason just looked down. “That good, huh? Oh well, it could be worse. At least you didn’t trip and fall on your way there. Cheer up buddy, it’s not the end of the world. Remember, tomorrow is another day.” They got to class just as the bell rang. The teacher was handing back their tests.

“How’d you do?” Patrick asked Jason.

“I passed with flying colors,” Jason replied happily.

At the end of the day as the two of them are walking home, Jason asks Patrick what’s the skinny on his ex-girlfriend.

“She keeps giving me the cold shoulder,” Patrick replies. “But that’s okay. I figure it has to get worse before it gets better, so I’m just going to take it one step at a time.” With that, the two boys parted as they reached their homes.

Antigone

In reaction to “Antigone,” I truly enjoyed reading it, however, not as much as I did reading “Oedipus Rex.” That’s probably because I’ve already gotten used to Sophocles’s notion of drama. What really amazed me was how Sophocles wrote this play before writing “Oedipus Rex,” yet, wrote it as a sequel to his future play, “Oedipus Rex.” Did he know he was going to add the prequel of “Oedipus Rex,” or did he think of the idea later on? Moreover, if he thought of it in advance, why didn’t he just write the prequel first, moving in sequential order?

In some ways, this play was reminiscent of “Oedipus Rex.” For example, in both plays, early signs of foreshadowing appeared, hinting out the story’s outcome. Reading further into each, one can immediately smell the trouble awaiting the kings! Although the outcome became obvious, I still found it a pleasure to read, eagerly waiting for the ending.

In addition, the storyline was a very believable one. It consisted of characters that were perfect for their parts. At times, Sophocles added a little humor by having characters make fun of each other, while arguing in their disputes. For instance, when Creon was arguing with Teiresias, Creon didn’t want to hear the bad news, accusing Teiresias of bribery to bring forth such a forecast (considering his prophecies were always correct). In doing so, Creon’s typical use of humor to get his message across kicked in, making the play amusing to read. He told Teiresias, “The generation of prophets has always loved gold.”

Furthermore, the tone was very sad, considering the king’s fate was a horrible one. Like King Oedipus losing his father and mother, so too, King Creon lost his son and wife. Although it was a tragedy, this was a fun play to read!

A. THE GATE OF IVORY

The path to Hell is dark and grim. The Entrance Hall consists of Grief and Resentful Care. Disease, Old Age, Fear, Hunger, Evil, Poverty, Death, and Pain all dwell there. Death’s close kin, Sleep, Joy of Sinning, and War are right outside. Furies and Strife the insane live there. The center has a giant shady elm-tree in which False Dreams consume. Many monstrous beasts can be seen there including Centaurs, Scyllas, Briareus, Lerna’s Beast, and Chimaera. Also, Gorgons, Harpies and Geryon. They seem harmful but they are actually bodiless and safe. From there begins the road to Tartarean Acheron. Among the mud and murk you find Charon, a ragged, filthy, evil figure. He guards the Acheron River which consists of unburied souls who cannot pass until one hundred years have passed. When you cross the river, a huge dog with three heads named Cerberus guards Hades.

As you enter Hades the first souls you encounter are those who have died as infants. Then there are those who have been put to death by false charges and those who have taken their own lives. Nearby reside those individuals who have died of mourning. Another group there are the heroes who have died in battle. The way then splits into two paths. The one on the right leads to Elysium, and the one on left leads to Tartarus.

Tartarus is the section where evil souls are punished. The River of Hell is there. It has a current of white-hot flames and boulders spin and roar. Groans can be clearly heard from a distance. You can also hear sounds of iron chains being dragged from far away. The tortured include those who hated their brothers, committed adultery, or engaged in war against their own country. The Sacred Gates are guarded by a monstrous hydra with fifty black throats. Rhadamanthur of Cnossas rules there. He knows of all deceitful actions and censures each fault. Tisiphone, a fury, is in charge of whipping the guilty. Her left hand has hideous snakes in which she threatens them with.

live paper help

The other path leads to Elysium, the home of the blessed in the afterlife. There are fields of grass in which the spirits play. They sing and dance in the Land of Joy. It is a Heavenly Paradise. At the far end of the valley, you can find many souls gathered at the River Lethe. It flows before the Homes of Peace. The souls who are destined to live in the body a second time drink the waters which abolish care and memory. They must pay the penalties for sins committed in life for one thousand years before they can be reborn in to a new body.

The Twin Gates of Sleep provide the exit from Hades. The gate of horn allows an easy exit for shadows that are true. The other is a portal all of white ivory in which the spirits send visions false in the light of day.

B. THE GATE OF HORN

Heroes can be portrayed by many different qualities. Leadership and emotional strength, I believe, make Aeneas a true heroic character in the Aeneid. Leadership often arises in times of chaos, as was the case in the Aeneid. In the confusion of war, Aeneas naturally rises to a role of leadership. In the battle of Troy, Aeneas saw flames, and fighting everywhere. Aeneas immediately prepares himself for battle. Aeneas demonstrates a passion for leadership in order to defend the city and his companions. But Aeneas’ leadership is not limited to times of warfare. Once Aeneas had escaped to safety it becomes clear that the people of Troy also recognized his leadership qualities. They look to Aeneas for strength and for guidance, putting their lives in his hands willing to be lead with loyalty. The quality of leadership is not the only quality that Virgil uses to show heroism in Aeneas.

Another characteristic that shows Aeneas heroism is emotional strength. This can be illustrated when he is forced to disregard his love and leave Dido behind. Juno sees an opportunity to keep Aeneas from going to Italy, and takes advantage, sending Cupid to influence Dido’s love for Aeneas. Dido finds out the Aeneas is leaving she is infuriated, scolding Aeneas. Aeneas holds strong with little compassion towards Dido. Virgil depicts Aeneas to be unaffected by his decision to leave. The true struggle of what Aeneas puts behind him for the will of the gods is shown just before he leaves. Virgil shows an emotional struggle between what Aeneas is destined for and what he desires. Virgil shows that the gods will play no role in the outcome of the battle to prove the heroism of Aeneas. Without the help of the gods, Virgil illustrates Aeneas’ true passion and will to succeed using his own natural strengths. There is in fact a humanistic aspect of Aeneas that is revealed by creating physical and emotional strife, which he must endure by himself. It is these human aspects of Aeneas, his leadership and his emotional strength that make him a true hero in the Aeneid.

A Doll House is a play about the need for a woman to feel freedom, freedom from her husbands control, her role in society, and the role of a mother figure. In the play, Nora is controlled completely by her husband Helmer. He treats her like a young doll, controlling everything that she does from what she eats to what she can and cannot do. Nora lives in what I would call a doll’s house. She is an attractive, young woman whose role in her husband’s eyes is to look pretty and raise their three children. Helmer believes that he has everything under his control until he finds out the truth of Nora’s past, and what is to come by her sudden choice.

Helmer fell ill for along while, and Nora being a good wife saved his life. Helmer doesn’t find this out until late, and he takes is as an unhonorable thing. He also comes to find out that the years of not being there for his wife have forced her into leaving him. He finally breaks down after the fact and knows what he is missing.

By Nora’s escape from her unhappy life brings what I would call a woman movement. Nora, knowing that she might not be able to make it on her own still cuts herself loose from the bonds of marriage, family, and society. This shows how husbands probably treated their wives in those days, and I believe that these women probably saw her character as a way out of their locked up lives for a moment. Nora was indeed a strong character. If someone, especially in those days, could walk out of financial stability like she did, then they would have to be a courageous person.

Basic Facts of the Case

The Portman Hotel Company is characterized for being one of the most prestigious luxury hotels of America. The service given to the guests is incomparable with their competitors. The direct contact between the guests and the ¨associates¨ is unique in the hotel business. They have a new concept, were a group of employees called the Personal Valets, provide a service to the guest and are trained to predict the guest’s needs and personality.

The Most Pronounced Symptoms of Distress

The biggest concern this company has is evident. The employees are not performing as they were expected. The hotel wants to have a higher level of employee commitment and responsibility, but there isn’t a concrete plan to solve this dilemma. The Portman’s strategy says that training and motivation will not achieve some standards. That, for me, is a big problem because they are not having a good program for training the associates. They need to develop a stronger training plan to achieve what they are expecting from the member of staff.

live paper help

The Problems

The 5’Star team plan is reorganization of the personal valets. This plan is created to solve the problems the PVs have. It is a plan to put an end to the disorganization and tension there is with the different workers of the hotel. The Portman wanted the personal valets feel more comfortable with their work. This strategy was also designed to solve the problem of employees that couldn’t have a long-term relationship with the guests and having some control with the tips, which are so important for the associates. This plan didn’t happen as expected because it had some improvements at first, but still had some problems. I think this is a significant problem happening in this company. They cannot find a real solution and they still have some difficulties. There are several problems going on in this company, but this dilemma might be the one the Portman is concerned with and the one is limiting the hotel to achieve all their goals and expectations.

The Human Resources Issues

The human resource department has been trying to solve the problems the employees have. They wanted the associates to have a work ambience without concerns so that way they could perform a good work and achieve the goals the company expected from them. They tried to make the guest feel at home, helped them with everything that they need, but they cannot do their best because of their intern problems with the other associates. Every time there are more complaints from the guests, and PVs were making each time more errors. The lack of supervision may be the reason this deficiency from the associates is occurring and is another worry the company is being inflicted with. Employees are not being controlled or helped when they are performing their jobs. If they do not want to have more complains from the guests, it is essential for a good performance and a work with no errors, to have a supervisor that con control that. The associates also did not have any guidelines of discipline because the hotels philosophy did not believed to discipline poor performers. They need to change that philosophy and start training employees because that may be a strategy that can solve several problems. Other concern that I could find in the hotel was a problem with the different departments that the company had. Employees said that working with other groups from the company was a problem. The hotel was structured in a way departments could not work together because they hay different functions and was disorganized. The hotel has to break the departmentalization and make the hotel function all together to support each other and that way be able to know what is going on in the hotel. Decentralization is also a big problem. The employees feel they don’t have a person to lead to when they need help. A solution to this can help employees solve easier and faster the problems so that the guest would be helped and that way complaints will decrease.

Recruiting and Selecting

The recruiting and selection of the associates in this company is considered to be crucial to the Portman’s strategy. They are trying to find the most talented people for their company. They believe the quality of service given to their guests depended only on the excellence of the employee. The process of selection was very important so they could find the most capable employee that could satisfy the needs of the guest. The problem was that they wanted to find the perfect employee but didn’t believed in training them to be perfect. As an example, the Portman believed that friendliness could not be trained or motivated, employees had to be friendly by nature. One of the supervisors of the personal valets commented that there is no training because they are so busy. Training is very important so that the goals the company has can be accomplished. Employees need to have training time, even if they have to work and the hotel has occupancy of 100%. If the employees are

Non Human Resources Concern

The original philosophy is another concern this company has. This difficulty, unlike the other problems, is not a human resource issue. They restrict themselves to follow the philosophy and they do not believe in varying it. Many problems in the hotel can be solved if they will vary and have new strategies. One example of this may be the levels of hierarchy that were increasing in the company buy were against this philosophy. They said they will have higher costs if more levels of hierarchy were created, but that can solve some of the most severe problems they had in the company. Costs may increase, but problems may be solved and that will be worth it.

Conclusion

In conclusion I can predict that the most significant concerns The Portman Hotel Company has are based on low performance of the human resource department and the limitation to follow the original philosophy of the company. The Personal Valets is an impressive idea, and may be the key competitive difference for the hotel, but it needs to have a perfect performance so that the hotel can have a remarkable result and can have an Asian-style service, as they wanted to achieve that objective. The company has to work hard solving those problems and find a solution that will have instant results because of the sudden shot up occupancy they are having lately.

With anything that has to do with consumer-oriented product, competition for sales requires dedicated focus and resources. Executive Summary

Brittany Commons Apartments was interested in identifying the most successful and least helpful aspects of the advertising mix in order to provide the most accommodating service to potential residents. Because of slow periods during the fall and winter months in the apartment industry, it is important for Brittany Commons to utilize the best method of advertising in order to reach the most number of people. The research team created a strategy for determining the advertising method that works the best in order for it to be used advantageously in a slower time of business. Management officials at Brittany Commons created questions that all potential residents were asked. The research team in turn analyzed the information in order to provide the apartment complex with accurate and helpful information. By carefully analyzing the results, the research team found that the Apartment Finder¡¦s Guide was used most by potential residents, and professional realtors were used least. The research team recommended using the Apartment Finder¡¦s Guide most often, as it has potential to reach the largest amount of potential residents.

Introduction

Housing is one of the most important factors people figure into their lives as they decide where to work and raise their families. Some people search for long periods of time to find a suitable residence. In return, owners and managers of properties tend to make what they have available most agreeable to the prospective market.

Brittany Commons Apartments, owned by Cullen Properties, is an apartment community located in Spotsylvania, Virginia, off of Courthouse Road. It has 576 apartments with one, two, and three bedrooms available. Prices range from $85 to $1145 for a one-year lease. The community is five years old. The first phase of construction was completed in 18, followed by the next phase with a completion date of 000. The newest apartments finished construction in 00. Brittany Commons is not a tax credit community and strictly follows the Fair Housing Act. Residents of Brittany Commons must earn at least $0,000 per year in order to reside in the apartments.

Summer is a busy time of year for apartment complexes. People want to move while the weather is warm, try to move before school starts in order to get their children acclimated to a new location, and college students are typically looking for places to live when they graduate in the spring. Summer serves as the busiest time of year in the apartment rental industry. It is the time when the most people come into the rental office with questions, seeking information, and possibly signing a lease. With the return of autumn, winter, and the holiday season, Brittany Commons Apartments typically experiences a significant slow period in the rental of apartments. People are generally more settled during these months because they have used the summer months to get whre they need to be and establish new homes. Autumn and winter bring questionable weather, a colder and less pleasant time to move. As holidays approach, people tend to be busy preparing for them and are more likely to get settled long before the holiday arrives. Holidays are family times, and people do not want to be moving in the middle of a holiday. The seasonal slowing of business presents a problem for apartment complexes. Apartments that are not rented my not be occupied for many months, with a loss of revenue.

During the summer of 00, Brittany Commons Apartments successfully occupied all of the second floor phase three apartments, but failed to lease all of the ground floor and terrace level apartments. Several apartments have never been occupied. The staff at Brittany Commons sees this as a potential problem, as it is their goal to rent all of their apartment units and provide acceptable housing for all potential customers. The staff believes that advertising is an important component of whether of not people seek Brittany Commons. By advertising to a specific group of people, Brittany Commons may have more success.

Brittany Commons uses several advertising methods to reach a large segment of the potential renting population. The sources most utilized include the Free Lance Star, the Internet, the yellow pages, and the Apartment Finder¡¦s Guide. All of the sources are readily available to the public.

With the approach of the winter months and holiday season ahead, business at Brittany Commons is likely to slow down significantly. Preparing to cope with this, a research design has been created to examine aspects of the advertising mix used by Brittany Commons. The research will identify which aspect of the advertising mix is most successful and which is least helpful. The research will also take into consideration which method of advertising is most profitable by carefully examining the advertising rates that accompany each form.

Full occupancy is important in realizing the utilization of resources and determining the most revenue for the business. By finding the most advantageous way of reaching the public, Brittany Commons will be able to keep within its marketing and advertising budget while possibly reaching its full potential. It is also important for this research to be done in order to provide an accommodating service to its potential tenants. By identifying the advertising mix that best reflects the tendencies of renters, Brittany Commons can develop a way to continue to use that avenue of advertising. Since is it usual for business to slow during the fall and winter months, Brittany Commons can use this time to evaluate the findings of the research and begin to create a plan of action for helping the business grow during the typical slow months.

The research will be completed through the leasing office at Brittany Commons. The focus will be on exactly how potential residents obtained information about the apartments. Each prospective resident who calls the office about information or who walks in to talk about or view an apartment is asked the same questions. Since the focus is on the advertising mix, potential residents are asked to tell what form of advertising they specifically used to find out about Brittany Commons. This information is an integral part of finding what the most successful way of advertising is. Approximately 150 people will be used in the research to determine what avenue of advertising is most widely used.

The Leasing Consultants will collect all of the pertinent information for the study. Cullen Properties designed the questions that potential residents are asked. The research group is not allowed to see all of the information that is obtained; therefore most of the research will be done confidentially. The information requested would be name, telephone number, address, and what the potential residents are looking for in an apartment. Finally, at the end of the conversation, the Leasing Consultant will ask how the potential resident heard about Brittany Commons. Different interviewers may have different styles and may ask questions in a different order. Interviews with potential renters who actually come to the apartment complex will take longer than those on the phone because they will be shown an actual apartment. However, all prospective tenants will be asked the same questions to acquire the same information from each of them. All of this information will be written onto a blue form, which will then be filed away in the leasing office after the application process or at the end of the month.

After the information is collected, the research group will analyze the data. Finding out how the potential residents hear about Brittany Commons is just one part of the research process. With the information obtained, the research group will help Brittany Commons establish the most successful way of advertising and will create new approaches to the advertisements that are used the most.

Finding out where people have learned about Brittany Commons is a real business problem. With the information that will be obtained during the research process, the business can find out how to better serve its customers. The overall goal of Brittany Commons is to provide the best service for its customers. By learning the ways in which its customers operate and think, Brittany Commons has a better chance of success. The apartment complex would like to utilize all it has to offer, and it would like to present its facilities to the community. In order for it to do that, it needs to find the best ways to get information out to all potential residents to draw more clientele in to view and possibly rent the apartments that are available.

The biggest form of error the research group sees as occurring is that of human error. Often, transcription error and speaking errors will be the biggest forms of error that will be noticed. There is not a significant chance that those being interviewed will skew the information about where they heard about Brittany Commons. The research analysts will have to be wary of possible human error on the part of the interviewers when compiling results of the actual research.

Methodology

Responses from approximately 150 individuals will be collected and analyzed to determine the most effective and also the least effective marketing or advertising device for Brittany Commons Apartments. The data will be collected from these respondents during a personal interview in the Brittany Commons leasing office. The duration of the interview could last anywhere from three minutes to 15 minutes depending on how much information the respondent wants about Brittany Commons. All respondents will express interest in renting from Brittany Commons by visiting the office. A small card will contain all of the information that is needed for research and will be filled out by a Brittany Commons Leasing Consultant.

How field work will be conducted

The respondent will sit down with a leasing consultant and will be asked several questions. Sensitive questions will be asked first concerning name, phone number, current address and occupation in order to establish a connection with person. Right after the sensitive questions are asked, the question of most interest will be asked. It is an open-ended question simply asking, ¡§How did you hear about Brittany Commons?¡¨ Finally, the leasing consultant will determine the needs of the potential resident by finding out when he needs to move in and what apartment size and floor plan he desires. The interview will be kept friendly and the leasing consultant will be trying to establish a bond with the potential resident since the respondent is also looking for a home. Once the card is completed, the respondent will either know whether he wants to view an apartment or not. The leasing consultant will then show the model apartments. Once the respondent has come to the decision as to whether or not to view an apartment the interview is over.

Analysis of Collected Data

Once the desired number of respondents has been collected, the data will be analyzed and tabulated by hand. How the person heard about Brittany Commons is of most interest to this particular research project. Also the needs of the respondent will be recorded because there are only a couple of apartment properties that offer a two bedroom with a den or three bedroom apartments and the research team is also interested in determining the needs of its clients.

Once the data has been tabulated it will be analyzed. Graphs and charts will be developed to better grasp which advertising mix would most greatly benefit Brittany Commons. The research team will further examine the number of people to occupy the apartment and how many bedrooms respondents wanted. This will enable to the team to determine if Brittany Commons should advertise about the availability of the apartments.

Section 1.01 Possible Sources of Error and the Steps taken to Reduce or Correct for Error

Due to the questions being so easy to answer, it is doubtful that a respondent will lie about how he found out about Brittany Commons. People typically respond easily to these questions due to the fact that the staff at the leasing office must do a background check, pull a credit report, and find out a resident¡¦s income. Respondents also know that any personal information is kept confidential so that the public will not know about their personal lives.

The other way that the error has been reduced is the fact that only one person will conduct the interviews with the respondents. Each leasing consultant has a different style of interacting with potential residents so only one leasing consultant will be used.

There may be researcher error when tabulating the results. This will be corrected by having more than one member of the group look over the data. The only other type of error would be interviewer error with having the interviewer write down the wrong answer to the question.

Results

The main goal of this research project was to identify which method of advertising is the most effective for Brittany Commons Apartments. The seven methods that the respondents used were; the internet, Apartment Finder¡¦s Guide, referrals from current residents, walk-ins, realtors, and newspaper advertisements. One hundred fifty potential residents were sampled and each respondent provided the interviewer with information about; the size of the apartment, the number of occup0ants, and how they had heard about Brittany Commons. The Apartment Finder¡¦s Guide proved to be the most effective with eighty-one (54%) of the respondents saying that they used this method to inquire about Brittany Commons. The internet proved to be the second most effective method with eighteen (1%) of the respondents using the computer to obtain information about Brittany Commons. Referrals from other residents proved to be the third most effective method of advertising with seventeen (11 1/%) respondents obtaining information from current residents. The next most effective method of advertising was no advertising at all; walk-ins composed 1 (8%) of the answers of how respondents heard about Brittany Commons Apartments. The yellow pages in the phone book and newspaper advertisements each had 10 respondents, who used these methods to obtain information about Brittany Commons. Finally realtors proved to be the least effective in regards to advertising for Brittany Commons, with only two respondents utilizing them to obtain information about Brittany Commons.

Other important statistics that were collected from this data were the average number of people to be occupying one apartment and the average number of bedroom applicants wanted. The average number of people to be occupying one apartment is .84 people. A majority of applicants, 7 of 150, requested to live in a two bedroom apartment. Only 0 applicants wanted a one bedroom. While 47 applicants wanted a three bedroom.

Conclusion

Discussion

When trying to determine which advertising method works best, the research team collected the data and performed different types of analysis as well as using different equations to try to find evidence to support our hypothesis.

When we analyzed the collected data, we found that the vast majority of respondents, 54 percent, used the Apartment Finder¡¦s Guide to find Brittany Commons. The next highest response to the question of how the respondent found Brittany Commons was the Internet. 1 percent of people chose to use the Internet to find an apartment at Brittany Commons. Respondents who found Brittany Commons through a friends referral were third in the ranking. 11.% of respondents answered the question of how they found Brittany Commons was through a friends referral. 8% of respondents were not influenced to come to Brittany Commons by any of the stated advertising and are thus counted as walk-ins. The yellow pages and the Classified Section in the newspaper both snagged 6.7% of the respondents each. 1.% or respondents found Brittany Commons through a realtor.

When formulating equations to support our hypothesis, the research team decided that it would be very useful to find out if we could determine the number of people that occupied each type of apartment. This would enable Brittany Commons to possibly have a more targeted advertising campaign. The research team then decided to put together a three null hypotheses stating that in a one bedroom apartment, only one person would be living it that apartment; in a two bedroom apartment, in which only two people would be living; and in a three bedroom apartment, in which only three people would be living. The research team decided to use these three null hypotheses for simplicities sake and to see if the team could rule out any of these three null hypotheses.

After putting all information into the three equations we came out with results for each hypothesis. In the first equation the Z value came out to be 1.1 which is less than the critical value of 1.6 at a confidence level of 5 percent. These results indicated that the research team could not reject the first null hypothesis.

In the second equation the Z value came out to be -.1 which was less than the critical value of 1.6 at a confidence level of 5 percent. These results indicated that the research team could not reject the second null hypothesis.

In the third equations the Z value came out to be -5.44 which was considerably less than the critical value of 1.6 at a confidence level of 5 percent. These results indicated that the research team could not reject the third null hypothesis.

These results ment that the research team could not reject any null hypotheses. These results mean that it is possible that one, two, and three residents respectively in the population at large occupy 50% of all the one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments.

Recommendation

There were a few places in our research that could have been more solid. One place, in which the research could have been better conducted, is if the staff or Brittany Commons could have been more open and forthcoming in providing the research team with information and assistance.

The questions that were asked of the respondents were not set by the researchers; but rather by Brittany Commons. It would have been more effective if the research team had been able to formulate its own questions. This would have allowed the research team to be more specific in trying to find the answers to the questions rather than having to wade through all the unimportant questions to get to the heart of the interview. Another reason it would have been beneficial for the research team to formulate its own questions is that it would allow for more flexibility. With increased flexibility, the research team could have added, dropped, or modified questions if the need arouse.

One other place in which there might be possible weakness is in the fact that all the research was done by a human. This opens the research to human error. This would be an uncontrollable error. The leasing consultant could have fudged answers, or hurried the respondent. This would be an error that the research team would have no control over.

When dealing with an established company, the research team should, in the future, sign a legally binding privacy agreement. This would have allowed the research team to conduct a more in depth study while at the same time respecting the privacy of the respondents.

Another area that could be improved in the future would be the number of team members with access to the data. This would help to eliminate some human error that may occur due to only a single team member being able to access the data.

Dave Smith

livepaperhelp.com

Dave is the office manager of a company called logcom. Here he runs the location. The company has lots of offices with it main head office being in London. It is a distributor of computer soft and hardware.

Andy Thournburrow -

Andy is the store manager of a clothing store called Freespirit in Enfield, which is in London. It sells brands such as roxy, quicksilver and billabong. It is part of the major company called ‘blacks out door wear’.

I have decided to use both these managers companies as one is a distributor who deals with the manufacturing and the other is in retail, which deals with the public. Therefore I have two sides of the cycle. I can compare the problems they face and try to make valid comments.

Also I decided to use these managers as I knew them quiet well and I knew they would give me up font and onist answer. Also they will be a reliable source. I will be easy to contact and be able to give me the correct information whenever I need it.

The problems

These are these basic questions, in individual substances I build on the anwsers. I asked

What Level of management are you?

Who are you in control of? Who is incharge of you?

Describe your industry. E.g. Retail etc

Where are you based?

What are the major problems you face being a manager?

. Is there a lack of respect?

. Are executive decisions hard for you?

. Is it hard to please everyone?

. Is it hard to delegate responsibility?

. Have you got a committed workforce?

. What do you look for in a person when hiring them?

. Are reliable and committed staff hard to find?

. Do you have any staffing difficulties?

. Are there any other problems with being a manager that you would like to share?

Results from Andy Thornburrow- Freespirit

Andy told us that the is a store manager in Enfield Town.

It is in retail

Head office in Northampton

No work ethics

Problems- He has to stick to a wage budget. He is only allowed a certain amount of hours to work from to give to staff. However extra staff is allowed if needed for example large delivery.

Paperwork is a bit of a hassle but does it all in work hours. Nothing is on computers. Its all on paper.

Tries to make executive decisions to please everyone, but sometimes that cannot be the case.

He delegates authority to the supervisors and the branch out to the workers.

When hiring look for initiative, common sense, work history and an interest in what is being sold.

Other problems are with sickness and holiday. Hard to get people to cover. Left short staffed.

Sometimes get over staffed in some cases and hours have to be cut, adjusting contracts.

The Worst Manager or Supervisor I ever worked for.

A few years ago I worked for a local wireless telecommunication company as an engineering technician in RF section of the engineering department. My primary responsibility was to assist the engineer with any assignments that he was unable to complete, examples would include field data collection, post data collection processing, site optimization, and on-air tower testing and troubleshooting.

The operational deadlines set by the engineering manager would cause the engineer I was assigned to become overly stressed and to set unreasonable deadlines on me to complete my assigned task. The English language was not this engineer native language, which effected his communication skills. Our office was based in Farmington Hills, where we reported each morning to receive our daily assignments. Our work would take us through out the Michigan and Ohio areas, because of the time frame it would take for us to travel to these sites; it would take some time to complete the assignments. He often would expect 8-hour assignment to be completed in two or three hours, not taking into consideration the travel time to and form the work areas.

This engineer was not an effective communicator, was not effective at time management, nor experience in understanding what the employees who were assigned to him were doing or what exactly what our jobs were, even after we tried to explain to him our training and limitations.

My experience working with this person made for a long workday doing something I enjoyed. It also effected the quality of the work we were doing by rushing through job assignment to meet his deadlines. This engineer was the worst person I ever worked for.
