The pike of olive, green though it had been, reddened and glowed as if to catch. I drew it from the coals and my four fellows gave me a hand, lugging it near the Kyklops as more than natural force nerved them; straight forward they sprinted, lifted it, and rammed it deep in his crater eye, and I leaned on it turning it as a shipwright turns a drill in planking, having men below to swing the two-handled strap that spins in the groove. Case Study Assasinations

The Assassinated

Abraham lincoln was the 16th president of the United states, he was one of the most influential and most powerful leaders in American History. He was the son of Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks. He experienced many jobs being a carpenter, a farmer, a lawyer and entering politics with his breakthrough becoming the president.

President LIncoln became the target of an assasination on the 14th of April after his would be captor, John Wilkes Booth failed to kidnap him months earlier. The failure to kidnap him was due to a change of plans on the day when the president disapointed the would be captors by attending a luncheon at the National Hotel instead of visiting a hospital outside of Washington. The reason behind the planned kidnapping by Booth was he expected to force the federal government to return Confederate prisoners of war who were confined in Union prisons and then return them to fight Union forces. The President was also targeted for an assination as Booth’s main motive for the assassination was because of his aggravation. He had planned for months to kidnap Lincolm but his plan was unfortunatley disrupted by luck and his months of planning the assassination went to waste. Additionally, he was a racist and Southern sympathizer during the Civil War. He disliked Abraham Lincoln as he supported all aspects of life and views that Booth was against. President Lincoln was blamed by Booth for all the Souths ills and he wanted revenge. Booth’s failure to kidnap Lincoln was quickly followed by two major Confederate defeats. Richmond, the capital of the Confederacy, was abandoned to Union troops and on Palm Sunday, April th, Robert E. Lee surrendered his army to General Grant. These two defeats aggravated Booth as he had always supported the confederate states and so he decided to assasinate lincoln.

The Assassination

On the morning of Friday, April 14, John Wilkes Booth had visited the Fords Theatre and found out that the President and General Grant were planning to attend the evening performance of Our American Cousin. He held one final meeting with his co-conspirators. He said he would kill Lincoln at the theatre (he had since learned that Grant had left town). Atzerodt was to kill Vice-President Andrew Johnson at the Kirkwood House where Johnson resided. Powell was assigned to kill Secretary of State William Seward. Herold would accompany Powell. All attacks were to take place simultaneously at approximately 1015 P.M. that night. Booth hoped the resulting chaos and weakness in the government would lead to a comeback for the South.

The Presidential party arrived at the Fords Theatre at around 80 P.M. Booth was armed with a single shot derringer and a hunting knife as he entered the theatre. Joseph Burroughs, a boy who worked at the theatre, held Booth’s escape horse in the rear alley. After examining the situation inside the theatre at around 0P.M he went next door to a saloon for a drink. He entered the front of Fords Theatre around 1007 P.M. Slowly he made his way toward the State Box where the Lincolns were sitting with Clara Harris and Henry Rathbone. Lincolns bodyguard, John Parker of the Metropolitan Police Force, had left his post. At about 1015 P.M. Booth opened the door to the State Box, shot Lincoln in the back of the head at near point-blank range, and struggled with Rathbone. Booth stabbed Rathbone in the arm and jumped approximately 11 feet to the

Due to the assassination Vice President Andrew Johnson was sworn in as president hours later. His assasination also caused grief to most of the American country and to most of his relatives and best mates.

The assassin

The assassin of President Lincoln was John Wilkes Booth who was born in May 10, 188. He was a popular actor, who ended his full-time stage career in May of 1864. He was a Maryland native who wanted to spend most of his time on his primary interest which was to support the Confederate States of America. After giving up acting he Booth was soon working actively with Confederate partisans. During his acting career he had the lead role in some of William Shakespeares most famous works.

Booth’s main motive for the assassination was because of his aggravation. He had planned for months to kidnap Lincolm but his plan was unfortunatley disrupted by luck and his months of planning the kidnap went to waste. Additionally, he was a racist and Southern sympathizer during the Civil War. He disliked Abraham Lincoln as he supported all aspects of life and views that Booth was against. Booth blamed Lincoln for all the Souths ills and he wanted revenge. Aswell as the assassination of Lincoln Booth had the desire to create political chaos so he had also organised for his accomplice Powell to kill the Secretary of State named Seward, and his other accomplice Atzerodt to kill the Vice President Andrew Johnson.

Hours after Lincolns shooting, Booth fled Washington riding a horse and soon met Herold his friend on the road. Both men rode into southern Maryland. The pain from the broken small bone in his left leg; broken in the escape when he lept off the State Box onto the theatre below, led Booth and Herold to stop at Dr. Mudds home for medical aid.

On April 6th, twelve days later after the death of president lincoln, Booth and Herold were finally found and were quickly surrounded while hiding in a tobacco shed in Port Royal, Virginia. Herold was afraid and surrendered to the Union troops, but Booth could not give himself up and decided to burn down the shed he was in, before he had time to make an escape he was shot while the shed burned down around him.

Although it first appeared in print in 170, England; it was not until the novel Charlotte Temple A Tale of Truth was republished in America that its author Susanna Rowson saw its true success. By the nineteenth century the novel sold over two hundred editions. The American readers readily enjoyed the “truth-in-fiction” story of a young naïve woman seduced and deceived by an older gentleman. It was this growing popularity among its readers that turned the character of Charlotte into an American heroine. If one looks deeper into the text, especially the form, including such elements as the narrator, character development and flashbacks, it is becomes clearly evident exactly how Charlotte appealed to the American audience and became their heroine.

A significant aspect of the form has to do with the narrator. In this novel especially, Rowson plays a tremendous role in conveying her ideas to the American audience. As a novel, Charlotte serves not only as a warning to the female sex, but also as a guide to correct womanly behavior; encouraging the “fair sex” to be moral, upstanding and virtuous. As Rowson mentions in her preface she has the purest intentions to educate the women of her time; “I wrote with a mind anxious for the happiness for that sex whose morals and conduct have so powerful san influence on mankind in general”( p881). With this in mind Rowson introduces as well as recommends an entirely new attitude for the “new American woman”. Through her narrative Rowson speaks out against the sensibility which plagues women. This newly developed notion prompted women too look to their feelings as a source of knowledge. In her advice “Oh my dear girls for to such only am I writing listen not to the voice of love…” she clearly shows that too much emotional response will lead to immorality and weakness which in turn leads to an ultimate downfall. In her tale Charlotte’s young and naïve heart follows the seductive Montraville and eventually leads her to her untimely death. Rowson stresses that this over-emphasis of emotions will lead a woman astray.

So how could this affect the minds of the American audience? Rowson’s novel was published at a time when American women were looking for their own sense of identity. Having Europe as their shadow, all they had was the corrupt ideals concerning women like the fact that a woman was considered to be mans property and was quite limited in political and social involvements. So with almost a motherly advice Rowson offered her female readers an example by which not to follow but to take with them a learned sense of what a woman should strive for. Perhaps it was this encouraging ideology against sensibility and towards independence which led to the tremendous success of this novel.

Another important aspect of Charlotte is the fact that Rowson plays an omniscient role as narrator. Through out the story she offers Charlotte sympathy through her ill-fated journey. As she is introducing the story Rowson mentions that “the tear of compassion still trembled in my eye for the fate of the unhappy Charlotte” (p881). There are numerous times when the narrator prompts sympathy and intrudes on the story with moralizing and forgiving words; “Pleasure is a vain allusion; she draws you on to a thousand follies, errors and I may say vices” (p87). This sympathy promotes compassion in the reader as well. Since Americans in their own were problematic outcasts; fleeing from Europe to find freedom, this brought about their initiation of Charlotte as their heroine.

Cheap Custom Essays on Charlotte: An American Heroine

Another aspect of form contributes to Americans excepting Charlotte as one of their own. This is illustrated through the plot sequence if the novel. Charlotte’s journey follows a famous model of a hero/heroine discussed by Joseph Campbell. As he stated the hero goes through a process of separation, initiation and return. These stages can be traced through Charlotte’s story, consequently showing that she truly is a heroine to her readers. It is at the point when Charlotte has to leave her country of England and embark on a journey to America that she experiences the separation form everything she knew; including her parents and friends. Once Charlotte is in America the cruel Montraville deserts and forces her to endure a good deal of heartache and sorrow; this illustrating the initiation into harsh reality for poor Charlotte. Finally Charlotte rejoins her father and although in great pain and misery she leaves this world, it is not without bringing her story to a satisfying conclusion; Montraville will suffer with guilt while her female audience leaves off with a lifelong lesson and memory.

Another element of the form that contributes to Charlotte becoming the bestselling American novel is the way Rowson sets up her characters and offers great insight into their motives as well as the characters psychological pattern of thought. The antagonists in the story could be looked at as symbolical figures for the evil ways of life in Europe. The villains, or those who corrupt innocent Charlotte are all Europeans and dwelling in the American land. During this time, especially with their Puritan heritage the Americans looked on to Europe as a place full of corruption and sin. It is then no wonder that someone like a British soldier like Belcore or a French woman like Madame La Rue could be so detrimental to Charlotte, who is looked at by the reader as an innocent bystander. In one instance Madame La Rue is convincing Charlotte to open Montravilles letter, once Charlotte gives in “Mademoiselle eyed the unsuspecting Charlotte, as she perused the letter, with a malignant pleasure” (p85). The word malignant demonstrates the predisposition to evil by Charlotte’s caretaker and mentor. Rowson’s word choice points out the conniving character of Madame La Rue. By closely describing the antagonists as well as using specific language, Susanna Rowson creates an overall negative view for the reader and he/she sides and sympathizes with the main character. This in all its combination once again brings out Charlotte on top and idolizes her in the minds of the American audience.

Another great force in the novel is Rowson’s masterful use of flash back in combination with character development. In the beginning of the novel she goes back in time to tell the story of Charlotte’s parents; two very caring, trusting and idealistic people. While telling the story of Lucy Eldridge and Temple, Rowson most conveniently sets up Charlotte’s character. By illustrating the purity and the love from which Charlotte had sprung, the reader gets an immediate glimpse of the succession of Charlotte’s values. Hence gaining an understanding for the dangerously naïve girl produced from this pure union. With this the reader does not blame Charlotte but sees that she is an innocent bystander who has fallen to adversity. This once again brings out sympathy in the reader and in turn promotes Charlotte to be seen as a fallen heroine.

Charlotte A Take of Truth by Susanna Rowson was the first best selling novel in America. The story of a young girl fallen to seduction caught the attention of the American public on many levels. This being a story of advice and lesson on morally appropriate behavior for women the character of Charlotte quickly grew to the status of an American heroine. Yet it was not just the storyline that attracted the American reader; the form of the novel significantly contributed to this taking place. Rowson’s narration of the story, character development and use of flashback contributed to Charlotte having this overwhelming effect on her audience. The uncertainty of the times combined with masterful writing gave way to Charlotte truly deserving the name of an American heroine.

My Autobiography

Come on! Hurry up theyre gonna arrive any minute now! She yelped as she belted down the corridor holding my hand and somebody elses. I remember being dragged along like a childs limp rag-doll, bounding side to side. I was ushered into the darked, suffocating hall filled with row upon row of chairs, where all the people would come in and scrutinize every move I was about to make. And as I continued walking, it all struck me.

I dont want to be in here! I didnt want to be in this dumb play. I never even wanted to be in the play first place! I wasnt given any choice to whether I wanted to be in the play, from the beginning it was like as if, youre in the play whether you like it or not! but I was never asked if I wanted to be in the play in the first place. I was forced to go along with it.

The costume I wore trailed along behind me. It was way too large for me but I still had to wear it. I had to now and again gather up the muddy coloured, threadbare costume along so that I would not trip over it.

I reluctantly approached the parting in the mass of chairs which led up on to the stage. The slight murmur of people talking slowly turned into silence as everyone turned to look at me. I took a peak at them and momentarily froze but then nudged along by my teacher, by now whom I hated. I nearly got to the stage without any glitches.

I was just about there! I started to walk more briskly towards the stage. But then, just as about my stage-fright had disappeared, I forgot to gather up my costume! It gathered around my feet like a rope trying to trap me. I tumbled to the floor like a sack of potatoes, and worse still a sack of potatoes that was being watched by loads of people. I had to get up! I carried on walking, it felt as if everyone was in a fit of uncontrollable laughter, I now realise that there was only one little boy sitting next to his mother smirking.

One very important thing I had learned about that incident. Dont be too nervous. Be calm.

Summer had come early this year. I was a sweltering 7oC in early May. I dashed out to play in the garden with my cousin who had just arrived. I got my football out from under the overgrown, almost dead apple tree in the far corner of the garden. I remember the smell of the trees at the back of the garden, it had a very distinctive smell of sap.

We stared to kicking the ball to each other. The first time I kicked the ball I narrowly missed the rusting greenhouse which was probably there years. After a while we got bored of just kicking the ripped leather ball about. I had just moved into our new house a few days earlier, so I didnt really go into the garden that much. There was one part where I hadnt been yet, I called that part the jungle because it was shrouded darkness and was taken over by ivy as if that area was invaded by the ivy. We had set out to explore.

I walked up the mound of mud to the jungle, my cousin followed slightly apprehensively behind me. There it was!

It sat there looking like a big boulder, not moving. It was a brown- green colour with bumps on its shell. My cousin ran away like a scared mouse. He ran into the house thinking that the tortoise was a monster out to get him. I picked it up and took it out into the baking sunlight and out of the jungle.

My Sister told me not to touch it or otherwise I would catch some deadly disease. I didnt listen to her. The tortoise didnt do much it just sat there munching away at the grass which hadnt been mowed in weeks. I remember vividly thinking we could keep it as the new portable lawnmower.

We werent allowed to keep it. I told my parents the lawnmower idea seeming that my Dad cant be bothered to mow the grass the tortoise can do it for him. Thinking about that now I realise what a stupid idea it was.

My dad took it to the vets the next day. It turned out that it belonged to the vets next door

and that the tortoise had escaped very slowly through the hole in the fence next to the still unexplored jungle.

On another day that summer, we were invaded! It was the middle of summer and there was a drought for the first time in years. School had just finished for the day and I was on my way home in the blistering heat. Walking home on that day turned out to be one of the worst moments ever!

As I walked out onto the main road which was as usual jammed with a mass of cars, but today it was unusual, all the cars had their windows closed in the middle of summer and most with their windscreen wipers on when it was not even raining.

I noticed when one of them collided with my face and I squashed it with my hand. I looked at my hand in disgust and saw a dead bug in my hand with this sort of brown blood coming out of it, it looked like a queen ant. I looked around in horror and saw thousands of them swarming everywhere. The cars which had their wipers were killing the bugs which landed on their windscreen like they werent living creatures. There was also one woman across the road screaming and flailing her arms in the air as if she was a maniac.

I hadnt seen anything like it tin my life. It was like one of the plagues of Egypt. When I was younger I was always scared of spiders and big flying insects, so this was one of my worst nightmares come true.

The ground looked as if it was alive in places, it moved where was a mini swarm of them. Everywhere I looked there where these pests, I fought to keep them off of me. I couldnt take it anymore. I ran as fast as my legs could carry me to the nearest phone box to call my Dad to pick me up even though my house was only a few minutes away. The heat in the car was almost unbearable, but was still better than the mayhem that the flies were causing out side. For a while the normally bustling streets turned into a ghost town. The unknown things had invaded and taken over the street.

When it got dark and cooler they gradually went. Just as soon they had came they had left. All that was left behind was the carcasses of the things that had died.

To this day it has always remained a mystery about where they came from and where the thousands of flies went. I think that they presumably they came from a freak incident because of the really hot weather that year. I think Ill never really know.

His wife Shirley joined the store in 166 and later Jack and Shirley passed on to their oldest daughter Leslie who is currently the vice president of the company. Leslie’s managerial and design skills and her husband Sam’s marketing skills transformed Kacey from a small family business to a major player in Denver’s growing furniture market.

Denver is considered one of the most competitive retail furniture environments in the country. There were over 50 retail furniture stores in the greater Denver metropolitan area in 15 serving a population of about two million people. Also in competition with Kacey were the more than 50 establishments that sold used furniture, as well as the many stores that competed in specialty or accessory goods, such as electronics, carpet & floor coverings, art work and knickknacks.

The Denver furniture market was dominated by four full-line independent merchandisers American Furniture Warehouse, Weberg Furniture, Homestead house, and Kacey Fine Furniture. Each of the stores has to apply different strategies in order to survive the competition.

C. Summary of External forces

According to me, the change in the general environment is the cause for the sales decline. The movement of people from the downtown area to the suburbs has become the major cause for the industrialization, which has further lead to insufficient parking space, traffic and finally a n absolute, unqualified disaster to the furniture shopping.

In order to fully understand ones identity, we must first define one’s community and the struggle to maintain this. Everyone at some point in their life struggles with who they are and where they belong within a community. We all want to fit in to a community and we all struggle to maintain our place.

In “The Life and Crimes of Harry Lavender” by Marele Day we follow Claudia, Robbie, Steve, Harry and various other characters struggle to maintain their identity. We follow them and witness the steps that each character takes to maintain their identity and in “ I stopped dieting and started loving my body” Fonda tells the story of how most of her life was spend trying to maintain a false identity and the steps she took to correct herself.

Sydney, at a glance is beautiful and innocent but it is built on corruption and crime. The characters in “The Life and Crimes of Harry Lavender” represent both the good and the bad side of Sydney.

Claudia Valentine is a feisty and witty Australian private eye. She lives on top of a bar in a rather seedy area of Sydney and practices karate. She has unresolved issues in her personal life which includes divorce and two children, and is searching for her father who was once a respected journalist and is now a vagrant, having fallen foul of Lavender earlier on. She appears to be tough on the outside. An example of this is when her car is bugged and she is attacked. She continued on with her investigation like it didn’t even faze her. But the issues surrounding her past eat at her on the inside. As the novel progresses we witness the actions of Claudia as she tries to maintain her community identity as a tough Australia private investigator.

For example when Claudia…

Harry Lavender is the key player in organized or mob crime within Sydney. He represents the bad side of Sydney. He controls people through technology rather than through drugs like most traditional mobs. He has connections with people all over Sydney including police officers. He uses people like Ronnie O’toole to do all his dirty work. But Harry isn’t all tough. He has a terminal illness. Cancer. He struggles to maintain his tough guy identity because he now realizes that he is not indestructible. An example of how Lavender struggles to maintain his community identity is how he tries to wipe out Claudia because she is going to destroy his crime organization, but at the same time he likes to string her along, making sure that she knows who is boss.

Sally Villios, who was Mark’s girlfriend, comes across as being innocent and sweet, but as Claudia’s investigation continues we begin to see the real side of Sally. We soon discover that Sally is the daughter of the biggest crime lord in Sydney, Harry Lavender and like her father, she is a manipulator. When Sally finds out she is the daughter of Harry it doesn’t take her long, before she feels that she must change her identity and consequently she too turns bad like her father. Her opinion of Claudia rapidly changes and Sally sees her as a threat and tries to murder her.

In the article “I stopped dieting and started loving my body” Fonda talks about how she use to struggle with her identity and who she was. She has always been over weight and had issues coming to terms with this. Through out her life she has tried to maintain a false identity. She has tried to be someone she isn’t but starving herself constantly, but as she grew older she realized she should love her body. Now Fonda is true to herself and she maintains a true and real identity. An identity where she is big, but still beautiful.

To first find and understand ones identity is truly difficult but once we have found our place within a community it is just as hard to maintain our identity.

CASE STUDY SERVICE INDUSTRY (Bank Z)

General Background

Bank Z is the largest domestic private sector bank in India. Since its inception in 10 till date, the bank takes a pride in serving its three million customers through a vast domestic network of seventeen regions consisting of 6 branches and 101 extension counters spread across the length and breadth of country. The total manpower strength of the bank stands at 5877, out of which 780 are workmen. Financially, the bank has been doing moderately well with increasing trend of deposits and profits level. In the face of deregulation (Narasimham Committee Recommendations), stiff competition and volatility in markets, the bank had to opt for reorienting its strategic framework by introducing strategic intents like sustained profitable growth, training/upgradation of human skills, enhanced customers’, shareholders’ and employees’ satisfaction, leverage IT and branch network, focus on retail banking, establishment of strong customer relationships etc to retain the leading position among the private sector banks. These strategies were to be driven by measures such as diversification, joint ventures, customer service, cost reduction, restructuring etc.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on bANK z (A HYPOTHETICAL CASE)

Assessment of Environment

The external environment of Bank Z is undergoing a rapid transformation. Among many of the external environment, the bank is facing the direct implications of following three key triggers

• Government Policy Changes The implementation of liberalized policy by the government has created favorable environment for the banking sector. Such as deregulation of interest rate structure has given flexibility to the banks to fix its own rate of interest. Reduction of government stake to percent has led to opportunity of having more power to the management team of the bank regarding the decision making etc.

• Intensification of Competition The impact of liberalized government reform is seen in the form of intensified competition in the banking sector. The entry of foreign banks and new private sector has increased the competition and complexity in the domestic banking sector. As a result, an extra effort needs to be made by every bank in order to achieve adequate level of growth and profitability in order to survive the rage of volatility due to stiff competition.

• Technological Change In order to move ahead in the competition, one of the strategic responses of Bank Z is leverage information technology and branch network. Introduction of more customized products such as Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs), Tele Banking Counters (TBCs) and Automating Forex services requires development of sophisticated technological packages. Thus, Bank Z needs to prepare well ahead to make necessary move to muddle through the IT jungle to meet the needs of the changing situation.

Corporate Strategies Identification

Corporate Strategy means an overall managerial move/game plan for the whole organization. With the deregulation, the bank has realized the need to reorient its corporate strategy. It has started articulating a theme for every fiscal year to excel in its operations and gain maximum business advantage. As for instance we can see the bank working on the theme of “sustained profitable growth” or “diversified and balanced business portfolio” during two different fiscal years. The bank has responded by evolving three different forms of Strategic Responses lately to retain the leading position among the private sector banks. These three Strategic modes are;

N Strategic responses related to portfolio management

N Strategic responses related to Process management

N Strategic responses related to Structure in the Bank.

Strategic responses related to portfolio management

Diversification By 00 the bank proposes to diversify into the following areas of business

N Consumer Finance

N Mutual Funds

N General Insurance

Joint Venture In order to expand its operations the bank is trying to form joint ventures with some international players.

Collaboration In order to launch insurance operations in India, the bank is negotiating with major European Insurance Company.

Strategic responses related to Process management

Its process related strategies consists of giving increased services to its customers such as introduction of ATM, extension of business hours at Tele Banking Counters (TBCs), Rejuvenation of customer service committee etc. Similarly it also includes marketing strategies like brand building, advertisements, up gradation of skills etc.

It also aims at providing various information technologies like email facility to 00 locations, CMS to 50 locations, Automating Forex Services etc. It also has a cost reduction strategy and the bank also has a quality strategy, which includes good inspection system, adherence to customer service manual and customer satisfaction.

Strategic responses related to Structure in the Bank

The Bank has introduced flat structure in place of its hierarchal structure and also has introduced a profit centre concept, which means that each region is a profit centre and is accountable for its business performances.

Identification and Assessment of HRD Responses

The Bank has a wide array of HRD process and responses provided to its employees which are identified as hereunder;

N Compensation is according to IBA’s guidelines and also consistent with Consumer Price Index rate. A wide range of allowance and perks has been arranged. They are also entitled to receive soft loans, such as house building advance, vehicle loan, various policies and holiday advance. They also get statutory benefits like bonus, social security schemes etc.

N Working Conditions is excellent with no compromise made on any aspect. The bank emphasize on the congenial physical environment in the bank to attract the customers and to provide a comfortable working place.

N Family welfare Employees are well taken care of with the Family Welfare provision The bank provides medical aid to the dependent family member. The employees are also paid education allowance and each employee along with the dependent family members is entitled for leave travel concession and has also introduced a pension scheme.

N No proper written HR Policy inspite of having full-fledged HR Department However it has a few booklets containing rules and regulations governing the sanction of advances and service rules.

N Training policy yet not evolved. But it follows a custom of training every employee a minimum of two or three days in a year and has a full-fledged training infrastructure at Bangalore.

N No written Performance Appraisal System Even though the bank has a performance appraisal format it has no written appraisal policy.

N Job Enrichment The Bank does not have a specific programmes/effort designed or implemented to enhance the job content of the staff except a kind of job rotation system which is yet not clear.

N Career Planning The Bank does not have any formal career planning.

N Communication In order to make the employees aware of various important developments, new policies and business plans, the bank publishes a monthly newsletter. No other communication mechanism is used in Bank Z.

N Employee involvement and empowerment programmes The bank has started a quality circle, which has been adopted by many branches. Except QC, no other employee participation programs are there in the organization.

Alignment

Analyzing the present policies and practices adopted at the bank and then comparing it to the Corporate Strategy, we can deduce that though the bank seems to be providing wide array of employee perks, allowance and benefits, it does lack in few aspects in alignment of its HR practices to that of Corporate Vision and Strategy.

N According to the Corporate Vision, Employee Growth is taken as a Commitment; however the conspicuous absence of any definite specific HR Policy inspite of having full-fledged HR Department shows the commitment is not very serious. Similarly, the managements apathy for upgrading the skills of clerical staff beyond a certain level in consideration of the fear that the highly skilled workers may leave the bank after they are upgraded is nothing but because of the lack of proper HR and Training Policy. The bank should instead ensure that its employees are skilled and are the best in the industry to provide the seamless service to its customers and better than its competitors are providing.

N One should not forget that the quality service is a core competency of the banks which is only possible when the employees, who come to direct contacts with the clients and customers, give high level of performance. The quality of performance can be ensured by the regular performance appraisal. Performance Appraisal in service sector like Bank Z is something which one cannot afford to ignore because it helps to improve the individual, team and groups performance by identifying the areas needed for improvement and help the organization as a whole to gain its objectives by improved service and performance. But at Bank Z it seems that Performance Appraisal is done just for the sake of doing it. No formal policy, authority or trained officer takes charge of the process. Though the PA system is used for the purposes of training, promotions, and placement in a particular function, due to lack of trained authority, counseling and further improvements required are not taken into consideration seriously.

N There is no formal career planning carried out in the bank. Though there is a scheme to encourage staff to acquire additional qualification and provision that employees acquiring these qualifications will be rewarded with monetary incentive and earn extra credit points for promotion to higher posts, which is just for short run. But no formal development needs of employee for long run are identified.

N The HRD practices where Bank Z is good at; such as Compensation, Working Conditions and Family Welfare can only fulfill the basic physiological needs of an employee. Moreover, it seems that bank had these facilities only because of unions influence to the management. The challenges at work and self actualization needs of the employees cannot be fulfilled by these mere compensation packages. For this, job enrichment and employee participation in decision making is required which the bank seems to be lacking. For job enrichment, they have only job rotation program which still is not coherent. Giving a common designation irrespective of actual job profile with less hierarchical level may give less development ladder to the employees which may act adversely as demotivating factor for ambitious employees. Similarly, the bank has QC program as employee participation and empowerment program which do help the employee to solve work related problems; yet employees are not participated in decision making of the organization.

N Similarly, the bank lacks two way communications between management and employee. Employees are informed only through the newsletter published monthly. There is no way the employee can give their opinion to the management.

Suggestions/ Conclusion

 The bank needs to have a separate HRD Vision and Strategies consistent with the corporate strategy, vision and mission.

 The bank should craft effort to make business strategy and employee resource strategy coherent to each other.

 A push for a more business-driven thrust to HRD at organisational level is needed because HRD Strategy is something, which falls, at functional strategy level. Though it is narrower in scope compared to overall business strategy, it adds relevant details to the overall business game plan. Care should be taken that the HRM Strategy must support the bank’s overall business strategy and competitive approach.

 The bank should Improve HRD not only Employee Development because there are individuals or groups who have some relationship with an organisation but are not in an employer-employee relationship. These external people and institutions have a direct or indirect interest in the business and influence the success of the business.

 The bank come up with formal exhaustive HR Policy including training policy ensuring that the employees are well trained and those on whose training investment is done cannot leave the bank all of a sudden to join competitors bank.

 The Bank is to face a stiff competition from influx of foreign banks and their powerful resources and thus to ensure the retention of its highly qualified executives from joining those foreign banks the bank could provide Employee Stock Options to the deserving workforce of the bank.

 Efforts to increase the client base and to retain the customers should be instilled while formulating the plans and procedures by providing better facilities and products than the competitors. One of the ways of outperforming competitors is to increase performance of employees to give better customer service; for which HR capital should be mobilized efficiently giving them more than compensation in terms of job enrichment, communication and participation at policy level.

 Similarly, attempt should be made to roll out the latest in technology like internet-banking and train the staffs and customers to use it efficiently.

Bill Crow has compiled a remarkable collection of stories from oral histories, interviews, biographies, and autobiographies. This book is an insightful look into the personalities and humor of the Jazz world. A bass player himself, Crow is obviously familiar with the life of a Jazz musician, and he has written down the tales that Jazz players have passed on to one another; tales that have created legends.

The entire book is filled, page by page, with laugh out loud stories of pranks, goofs, club owners, getting hired, getting fired, and unforgettable moments while playing at the clubs. Jazz Anecdotes shows the jazz world as it really is. It also offers extended sections on greats such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Charlie Parker.

One story Crow passes on is a discussion of Shelly Mannes work with bandleader Herman. it involves trumpeter Lee Katzman, “A few musicians, listening to an old Herman recording on the radio, were trying to identify the drummer. Is it Shelly Manne, or Jake Hanna? someone wondered. Crow reports that Katzman listened for a while, then said It must be Shelly, cause Jake dont jam like that.”

Cheap University Papers on Jazz Anecdotes

It also gives you a good feel for what the lives of jazz musicians were like the camaraderie and competition, the inventiveness, the struggles over money, the often terrible working (and especially recording) conditions. There are also poignantly funny stories about problems with drugs and alcohol, and even about the racial prejudice that musicians had to put up with. My favorite story in the book was about Bessie Smith storming out to confront a group of Klansmen gathering outside the tent where she was working. Peppering them with curses, she ordered them to pick up them sheets and run. They did. Great woman. There are lots of great women (and men- mostly men) in this book. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know a little bit about them.

JANE ADDAMSA SOCIAL REFORMER

History has long since been recording events that have shaped the society in which we live. However, most of these events have occurred at the hands of a male, and they have had a direct impact on our position as a world leader. Yet, if one looks hard enough and long enough, other important people and events stand out. Jane Addams, and her work for the betterment of all mankind, shines as an example of such a person who single handily impacted the world in which she lived. It is interesting then to look at the woman behind the history. Knowing about her life, her works, and her famous “firsts,” lets a student of history understand her position and its impact.

Just seven months prior to the Civil war, Jane Addams was born in Cedarville, Illinois. The date was September 6, 1860. Her mother died when Jane was only two; Mary, her oldest sister, took over her care. Jane was born with a spinal problem unique to doctors of the time. “This problem caused Jane to walk pigeon--toed with her head tilted slightly to one side.”(Theme 1) Since children of this time were taught to walk with their toes turned out, Jane gave the grown-ups cause for worry. Jane did not stay motherless for long. Her father married the widow of William Haldeman. William had been her father, John Huy Addams’s, best friend. When her new mother arrived, she also brought her two boys. The oldest one, Harry, did not spend the time with Jane that George, the younger one, did. George was only a few months younger than Jane, and he proved to be a great companion to her. He had a great impact on her ideals of life. Jane, too, was apparently very close to her father. “John Huy Addams was a successful businessman and politician who tried to pass on to his daughter his ideals of hard work, achievement, democracy, and equality.”(Important 1) “Growing up a Quaker, she lived the traditional beliefs of hospitality. At night everyone’s bedroom door was closed and the hall would be dark. The front door of the house would be unlocked.” (Theme 1) These ideals, and close family/stepfamily relationship stayed with her throughout her college years at Rockford Female Seminary. “Rockford Female Seminary had reinforced what Jane had learned at home from her father and two mothers Christian ethics, the importance of being good and doing good, a broad role for women, a stress on accomplishing great things.”(Levine 16 & ) Upon completion of her studies at Rockford, Jane enrolled in Women’s Medical College. Her education here would not be completed due to a serious ailment to her already frail back. After surgery and six months in bed, she went to Europe to find her purpose in life. During her travels through several European cities, she had a glimpse of a lifestyle that was opposite to the one of privilege that she knew as she grew up. “She visited Toynbee Hall, the very first community center established to tackle the problems of poverty in the cities.”(Theme ) Upon her return from Europe, and deeply moved by the experiences, she took an apartment in Chicago with her friend, Ellen Starr. These two women began a campaign to make a difference in the lives of nineteenth century people.

Cheap University Papers on JANE ADDAMS—A SOCIAL REFORMER

Jane and Ellen took it upon themselves to change a system that treated people differently based on their position in society. Obtaining support was not as difficult as it might first appear. The two young ladies were sincere in their quest to help the less fortunate to a better life. This sincerity was obvious to benefactors as they got behind the women. Their first exposure to the world of philanthropy was with Armour Mission. “Armour Mission, a non-sectarian educational institution, was founded in 1886. It included a kindergarten, library, literary societies, and lectures, a free medical dispensary, a kitchen garden, a sewing or workroom for women, nurseries and bathrooms.”(Farrell 5-54) During this time, Jane continued to strive towards reaching and assisting more people. Her works gave her the opportunity to speak to large, powerful groups who took up her cause. But, Jane did not just do the “speaking.” She would not hesitate to get personally involved. “Often, Jane would accompany truant agents on their rounds to discover the areas of the city where school absenteeism was highest. She also was escorted to areas of particularly heavy need by relief officers from the Charity Organization Society.” (Farrell 55) When the organizations took note of her efforts support quickly followed as she attempted to open the now famous Hull House. Endorsements from the various groups, both philanthropic and religious, along with those who were already working with immigrants, allowed her to make her dreams of providing help for “the starvation struggle which makes up the life of at least half of the human race.”(Farrell 56-5) Hull House evolved slowly. The first activities were very basic. They started with a reading party. Then providing hot lunches, child care, and tutoring were added to the party activities. Later, Hull House was listed to have had Chicago’s first public baths, gymnasium, public playground, little theater, citizenship preparation classes, public kitchen, college extension courses, free art exhibits, public swimming pool, boy scout troop, Hull House attempted to provide whatever was needed. Addams believed that it allow people to help put an end to the “great struggle which makes up the life of at least half of the human race.” (Farrell 56-5) But providing for the lack of necessities was not all she did. Addams worked to develop a community spirit that pulled people together to get the necessary things accomplished for themselves. Better streets, safe parks and playgrounds, and public baths were some of the things that the immigrants were soon working together to achieve. Hull House made a difference in the neighborhood around 800 South Halsted Street. Yet, its impact was beginning to have a “rippling” effect on all of the country. “Her work toward social improvements in Chicago, coupled with the work of other reformers, marked the beginning of the Progressive movement in America. This movement sought to overcome the often dehumanizing effects of rapid industrialization through a variety of political, economic, an social reforms.”(Theme 4) The experiences gained in Hull House gave the clients a beginning as well. They found strength in themselves, and they began a powerful reform movement as well. Their projects changed a great deal of the juvenile system and impacted protection for the immigrants’ rights.

Miss Addams, who never married, definitely made a name for herself in an accepted manner. She did not try to be something society frowned upon, she just made things happen by her works and her willingness to get involved. Jane has been credited with writing several books and other literary works. Yet she was not always involved in the usual things that the women of her day involved themselves in doing. She was the garbage inspector for the 1th Ward on the west side of Chicago in 185. She served as a member of the Chicago Board of Education. Jane worked to establish the NAACP, and she was the 1st Vice-President of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. The starting of the ACLU was also one of the credits given to Addams. She also founded and served as a ten year president for the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. Since the decisions of the government impacted the lives of those she attempted to help, politics were of interest to her as well. She had the opportunity and honor to second the nomination of Theodore Roosevelt for President at the Progressive Party Convention. Recognition for her works reached a new height when she became the first American woman recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 11.

Although Jane Addams died of cancer in 15, many of her endeavors are still evident today, Hull House, as a major complex, has been leveled and it’s now part of the University of Illinois campus, but its traditions and impact live on today. “In June of 167, Dr. Murray H. Nelligan, of the National Park Service unveiled a bronze plaque beside the door (of a remaining portion of the original complex) designating the building as one of 750 national historic landmarks and said, ‘In my opinion, none of the national historical landmarks better signifies the achievements of the past while pointing the way to a brighter future for our cities than does Hull House.’”(Chicago Pub. 1) When one thinks of Jane Addams and her legacy of help for whoever needed it, however they needed it, and whenever they needed it, it brings to mind a current belief used today. If you give a man a fish, he can eat for a day. If you teach him how to fish, he can eat for a lifetime. Jane Addams was indeed a great woman, person, and American. “She built her reputation as the country’s most prominent woman through her writing, her settlement work, and her international efforts for world peace.”(Biographical 1) Jane Addams definitely has earned her place in the history books and in the hearts of countless Americans.

Most people might have felt revengeful anger at least once in their lifetime, and some of them realize it to action, because they can not control their momentary anger, or they expect satisfaction and completion. But guilty and nothingness always follow the result of their actions, especially if it is criminal. Moreover, unrelated people could be involved and destroyed in other people¡¯s revenge, and it bears another anger and revenge. For example, the president Bush and other Americans might feel sorry for uncountable people who were innocent and killed in the war which was revenge of the .11 terror, even though the war was necessary for solving national political problem, keeping peace through replacement of axis of evil, and prevention for Iraqi terrorists¡¯ retaliation to America. However, in the tragic play Hamlet, written by William Shakespear, Hamlet who is son of King Hamlet kills his uncle Cladius who has murdered King Hamlet to take the seat of king. Hamlet¡¯s revenge toward Cladius could be shown as Justice, but in the other hand, it is also a crime. Hamlet¡¯s revenge can not be justified, because all of his actions are illegal and immoral.

First, Hamlet commits crime. He kills Cladius who is foe, uncle, father or the king to him. That¡¯s a murder and crime, and it cannot be excepted by any reason, because same cases would happen if it is not cared by low. He also kills Polonius, because Polonius is just overhearing him and the Queen who is Hamlet¡¯s mother. He knows sadness about losing someone, but he kills someone who could be a father like King Hamlet was his father without any hesitation or regret. It shows how selfish and immoral he is, and he is not different with Cladius at all. (quotation)

However, Hamlet feels so sad about Polonius¡¯ daughter¡¯s death. But it could be Hamlet¡¯s indirect murder, because he charges her huge sadness, shock, and sorrow. Plus, Polonius¡¯ daughter would have another revengeful mind or plan toward Hamlet, and might bring another meaningless death if she was not dead. Hamlet¡¯s stupid action consequently killed two innocent people. (quotation)

Hamlet sees and feels uselessness, sadness, guiltiness and meaninglessness of a murder in the view of third person, moreover, he can forecast resultant of his plan. But he keeps going the project. Moreover, he avoids punishment, because he acts like a mad man, and it is fraud. It shows he is not repenting for his murders by heart but only by tongue. Thus, Hamlet is actually a kind of evil who is just desiring Cladius¡¯ death different with he is being represented like a hero in the play.

Second, Hamlet¡¯s action is realistically and morally bad. First of all, he doesn¡¯t have any certain evidence about Cladius¡¯ assassination. Although, Cladius¡¯ assassination is necessary and the most important source for progress of the play, Hamlet must have made it sure. If this case of murder by confident belief is justified or shown as a hero in real world, society will be fallen into deep confusion and disarrangement. However, Hamlet decides to kill Cladius after the conversation with soul of King Hamlet and he sees nervous actions of Claudius during the play which is about his assassination, but that does not make any sense. (quotation)

Besides, Hamlet intentionally and indirectly kills two servants of Cladius who were innocent and also his fellows by fixing the letter from Cladius to English Queen badly. Although he gets angry from Cladius¡¯s plot what is about to kill him, he doesn¡¯t have to kill them. (quotation) Therefore, it represents that Hamlet has no sympathy for other¡¯s lives. Therefore, he has no right to swear Cladius ethically.

Third, the conclusion of the play Hamlet expresses the absurd of Hamlet¡¯s revenge. Finally Polonius¡¯ son decides to assassinate Hamlet with Cladius. He is going to kill him during fencing game with put some poison on the sward. (quotation) Finally the sward of revengeful Polonius¡¯ son gets Hamlet down. It could look like Hamlet¡¯s tragic death, but there is no different between Hamlet¡¯s and Cladius¡¯ deaths. Hamlet is a foe of Polonius¡¯ son like Cladius is to him. If Hamlet¡¯s revenge was justice, or at least the process of retaliation was ethical, there would be no reason for the assassination. Plus, the important point is that the resultants of the two revenges were regretful and sorrowful. (quotaion) However, Norway¡¯s princess gets control over Denmark. How meaningless end of Hamlet¡¯s life is. Consequently, he just ruins the great accomplishment of his father, King Hamlet through the stupid revenge. (quotation) Hamlet needed to relax himself, and he¡¯d batter try to discover and notify the truth of King Hamlet¡¯s death than follow his retaliatory heart. Plus, he shouldn¡¯t ignore the lessons from committing crimes.

In conclusion, Hamlet¡¯s retaliation is meaningless, guilt, and regretful. He needed to control himself, and view the actual world realistically. If He did so, he could foresee the resultants of his revenge, and protect many people and even himself from death. In Japanese animation the Roaming Kenshin, a police officer says ¡®Revenge is forbidden by law¡¯. It explains that with any reason, crime is crime, and revenge is so possible to create another tragedy. Thus, Hamlet¡¯s ¡®eye for eye, tooth for tooth¡¯ way is not a good way, and his contradictive death explains it very well. Also in this world, sometimes people have revenge because of losing of self-control or not thinking about future. Moreover, they destroy other unrelated people through their revenge, because people are living in a community. Therefore, revenge cannot be justified no matter what is the reason. Thus, if people always be aware of that revenge bears revenge, and think about after and others, they could increase unhappy accident of life wisely.

We all interact with many people on a regular basis. Some of our encounters go better than others. Some go very well. Some leave us feeling uneasy and anxious. What elements of our personalities and of the people we meet make the difference? This is the subject of Social Psychology. Social Psychology is used to describe, explain and predict similarities and diversities in humans.

This is what has led our class to study social psychology in adult development, for each individual to gain a better perspective of ourselves through common factors and individual experiences. There are several psychologists that have developed theories to aid in defining our stages of emotional, moral, and even physical development.

Before you begin to study adult development, you must understand how we learn and interact with people. In Kolb’s Model of Experimental Learning there are four stages. Concrete experience is how we learn and what we learn. For example, where and when things happen, what you perceive is real to you. Observation and reflection, this is your thinking process. A person begins to categorize and reflect on how you felt about what happened also why it happened. This signifies a pattern of relationship.

Formation of abstract concepts and generalizations, is the point where you begin to formulate the thought process in a particular category, your mind is trying to put concepts in order. The final stage is testing and implication in new situations, which is a pattern of focus, where we are going to put information and how we will use this information.

Erik Erickson’s Theory of Identity has been the basis and major influence in most of the stage theories of adulthood. He proposed that at each stage of life beginning at birth, we go through a dilemma defined by a pair of opposing possibilities; the other is the less healthy outcome. Erickson believed that a total healthy resolution was not the key to moving from stage to stage, nor is it the answer, the best resolution as he sees it is a balance of the two sides such as initiative vs. guilt, a child can become too much initiative causing harm to himself or to others. The identity theory also states that these crises are forced on us which moves us through the life cycle that is why each stage is age defined.

If these stages begin at birth for everyone then what influences our behavior causing us to move through the various stages? Some people argue that is in our nature that impacts us the most. Nature is what we are born with our genes and our internal make up; these factors can impact a person physically and emotionally. On the other side of the argument is the nurturing side which is environmental, meaning how a child is raised how much time is spent with that child, what has a child been taught. Both nature and nurture affect the human development.

As we begin to develop or identity and who we are, our thoughts begin to develop. Jean Piaget believed children pass through four periods of mental development. During the sensorimotor period, they obtain a basic knowledge of objects through their senses. This period lasts until about age . During the preoperational period, from about to 7, children develop such skills as language and drawing ability. In the period of concrete operations, from about 7 to 11, they begin to think logically. For example, they learn to organize their knowledge, classify objects, and do thought problems. The period of formal operations lasts from about 11 to 15. At this time, children begin to reason realistically about the future and to deal with abstractions. Abstractions are ideas about qualities and characteristics viewed apart from the objects that have them.

James Fowler presented a six-stage theory of faith development presented in his book, Stages of Faith, which has since become the most popular and commonly accepted theory

The adult stages in Fowlers theory typically include stages three through six. The earlier stages follow normal development; the various stages of faith are neither achievements, nor progressive steps to salvation, but simply degrees that ones faith goes through as it develops. The following is a brief description of the adult stages

Stage . Synthetic-conventional In this stage, a person knows why he/she believes. One pulls together various parts of faith and tends to conform to the majority, and people are rewarded or punished for following rules laid down by the proper authority (the church or Bible). Views at this stage are often stereotyped.

Stage 4. Individuative-reflective There is a relocation of authority within the self, along with a critical reflection of ones beliefs. Faith becomes uniquely ones own. In addition, there is usually a struggle to grow and understand. Stage 5. Conjunctive Individuals realize the paradoxes in faith, and learn to live with their faith and their questions. This stage involves a dynamic, trusting relationship with God. Stage 6. Universalizing Faith This stage is defined by feeling at one with God. People here invest their lives in a larger cause without being concerned by the personal cost Fowlers theory is very important, he hypothesizes that each of us develops through a shared series of faith structures(of world views, broad internal working models, meaning systems, or whatever we might choose to call them) over the course of childhood and adulthood. These stages are simply frameworks of understanding people and where they are in regard to their faith.

In the beginning of class we studied internal adult development, but in order to fully understand total development we must now turn to our external development. External development is not a formal term, it means to me the relationships you have with others and how you are affected. Sigmund Freud was a medical doctor from Vienna, who primarily worked with the mentally retarded. He formed several theories to explain how we as humans react to on another. The stage is called the ID, a drive that is in everyone, it is instinctual, and can even be traced back to cavemen. Out of the ID comes the libido, this is something energizing in the ID that wants immediate gratification. The next stage is the Super Ego, this deals with our morals, what we learned from our parents, our value system. Then there is the Ego, which Freud defines as reality, the part of the personality that seeks to satisfy the ID and the Super Ego in accordance with reality. This can also be defined as the balance between the ID and the Super Ego. In dealing with certain external factors a person may develop a generalized feeling of fear or apprehension that may or may not be associated with an object or event, this is called anxiety, anxiety is displayed through a physiological change. Anxiety is a bi product of stress caused by a stressor. A stressor is the environmental stimulant that affects the organism. In order to handle stress we protect ourselves emotionally, almost as if we are wearing a suit of armor.

This suit of armor is called defense mechanisms, an unconscious way of reducing anxiety by distorting reality. The defense mechanisms are Repression- not dealing with something may cause displaced aggression. Denial refuse to accept the source of frustration. Projection - attribute to other people your own undesirable traits. Reaction formation - behave in a manner opposite from true anxiety provoking feelings. Sublimation - redirect socially unacceptable impulses into acceptable ones. Rationalization reinterpret behavior to in terms to make it acceptable.

To conclude we must realize the inevitable which is we are all going to die. Kubler-Ross developed Stages of Dying. How people cope with their own death or the death of a loved one. There are five stages that all people go through, the first is denial, which is the belief that it did not happen or is not going to happen to me. Anger, why did God take this person from me, why am I going to die? Bargaining, if I do something then God will spare my life allow me to live longer or spar the life of someone else. Depression, which can be categorized as sadness and then finally the stage of acceptance, you are ready to die or you have accepted the death of your loved one.

Exploring the subjects of adult behavior has been an enlightening experience. Each theory that was studied or discussed gave me further insight into my life experience. It also helped me see where I am currently and where I would like to proceed. Life is a learning process and the more we learn about our selves in relation to the world, we then become better people. ”Life is about moving from an imperfect state to a perfect state.”
