Values are as important on the job as they are outside the workplace. Research indicates that a vast majority of individuals leave their current job due to value conflicts with current work duties. This suggests a strong connection with a persons values and her/his commitment to a specific job. This suggest a strong connection with a persons values and her/his commitment to a specific job. Thus, it is important for you and for UTA to determine what your values are. If your personal values are not being validated in your current position, you should ask what, if anything, can be done about it? If nothing can be done, how will this affect your future career choices?

In thinking about your own values, or qualities you seek in a job, there are two points to keep in mind. First, your priorities are not written in stone. They are affected by many things going on in your life and thus should be reassessed periodically. For example, your feelings about the importance of time away from work will almost certainly depend on your current family situation or whether or not you are also in school. The importance you place on professional recognition may depend on what stage of your career you are in. In any case your priorities will affect career choices in significant ways.

Second, many organizations are examining the written and unwritten values they promote, and some are consciously shifting their expectation to accommodate the changing needs of their workforce. For example, the growth of two-career families has meant a dramatic decrease in the number of employees who are willing to relocate in order to move up. Again, the fit between your values and UTAs values are an important factor to be considered in your career development.

BGHS Trial HSC henry Lawson.

Good morning members of the audience and distinguished guests, I am here to talk to you today about my ‘Experience through language’. I am sure you’ve all read a good narrative but never really delved deep to understand how and why it was effective. Next year when you start your HSC, don’t moan its not that bad, you will study henry Lawson ‘telling stories’ this is, in my opinion, the most interesting core. Whilst learning about narrative technique you learn about bush life, and the experiences that come with it. My favourite short story was “the loaded dog” and the related text “the man from iron bark” by another famous Australian composer A.B Paterson.

In my opinion Lawson’s use of language was what made “the loaded dog” such a popular bush yarn. The language that Lawson uses is vernacular and idiomatically Australian. This establishes purpose, setting, and the time that it is set in. “the loaded dog” is told by a laconic. The dialogue is colourfully colloquial, this lends to the casual tone of the story an example of this would be “ your dorgs run orf inter the scrub”.

The Australian euphemisms that are used throughout the story like Tommy the “blanky retriever” or Dave who is referred to by the republican as a “crimson fool”. This is a lighthearted positive look at the bush and focuses on mateship and the extreme event of Tommy with the live cartridge in his mouth.

Has anyone ion the audience ever had a hair-brained extreme plan?

I’m sure you all have. But if you haven’t think back to the Simpson’s and Barts and homers ludicrous ideas. This is one of the reasons why the story is so affect, it appeals to young and old alike as we can identify with the trios hair-brained plan to blow up the creek to get the fish out, ok maybe not that extreme but you know what I mean. Besides this the setting is realistic and the idea plausible. Through Lawson’s development of the protagonists, Dave, Andy and Jim, we, the audience feel as if we know them and we are in on the plan as well. They are characterised through hillarious colloquial terms like “he wasn’t interested in their damn silliness”. The terminology used in this story is simple and evocative like Dave’s toothache having a “burred edge”. The similes used by Lawson make it possible for the audience to visualise what is happening

“he jumped around like a flee having a fit”. Can you imagine that? Pretty funny isn’t it? Lawson’s use of alliteration formulates the atmosphere. We are told of Tommy’s retrieval habits and how the men discovered the dead cat at the tent opening when they “sniffed suspiciously in the sickly smothering atmosphere”. The tension is built up through the laborious description of the making of the cartridge. This draws our attention to the cartridge and helps build up the tension of the story. Slapstick humour is interested when we find out that Tommy has the live cartridge “wedged in his broadest and silliest grin” and of course we all know what the consequences of the bomb will be, don’t we? KABOOM! The men know this too but Tommy thinks that it is all just fun and games. When jims legs “started with a jolt… his legs started before his brain did” we are introduce to a rather comical aspect of the story because when visualised this scene is reminiscent of a cartoon. The chaotic chase is made even more so through the use of alliterative references like “Dave dodged” and “snatched up sticks and stones”. Lawson’s clever use of short sharp sentences adds to the urgency of the situation that is experienced by both the audience and the characters. The fact that Lawson focuses on the effects of the blast rather than the blast itself “it was good blasting powder… and excellently made” the tension and suspense is maintained. Through the use of these very effective techniques Lawson has created a memorable bush yarn.

The eight-stanza poem “the man from ironbark” by A.B Paterson is a hilarious poem concerning a man from ironbark who goes to get a full faced shave in the city. But because the barber was “a humorist at note- and keen at repartee” he pretends to cut his throat. “With the red hot razor sliced back across his throat!”, so the man from ironbark “knocks him out” and I’m sure that you would too if someone tried to kill you!! However, “twas only a joke a trifle over done”

In conclusion these two texts should show you just how interesting and how deep you can delve into understanding effective narrative technique. Enjoy year 1 and thankyou for your attention.

Happy Song, Sweet Hope

¨DThe Contrast of ¡°The Darkling Thrush¡± and ¡°Ode to a Nightingale¡±

¡¢ Introduction

Thomas Hardy¡¯s ¡°The Darkling Thrush¡± is one of famous lyrical. It was written on Dec.1, 18, the last day of the 1th century. The end of a year and the end of a century arouses in all men deep and often sad reflections and the external world merges with the poet¡¯s melancholy. The poem is a moving record of a man¡¯s tragic vision of ¡°terrestrial things¡±. The vocabulary and imagery of the poem are directed mainly toward creating a sense of the bleakness and sadness of the winter landscape. Although it is sad in tone about the background the poem carries some hope towards future because ¡°a voice arose among/ The bleak twigs overhead/ In a full-hearted evensong/ Of joy illimited¡±. The voice is an aged thrush¡¯s happy song. The song of the thrush is a sign of hope in this desolate time. The thrush is the symbol of the mature. So the hope is rendered to the speaker, which represents the human beings, by nature. And the aged thrush is one of main images in the poem.

In English poetry, many poem¡¯s main images are birds. For example P.B.Shelley¡¯s ¡°To a Sky-Lark¡±, its main image is the bird, sky-lark; John Keats¡¯s ¡°Ode to a Nightingale¡±, its main image is the bird, nightingale; and W.B.Yeats¡¯s ¡°The Wild Swans at Coole¡±, its main image is the bird, wild swans. All of these birds image in the different poems have different symbolic meaning. However they have some common features. The paper tries to analysis the same and difference between Thomas Hardy¡¯s ¡°The Darkling Thrush¡± and John Keats¡¯s ¡°Ode to a Nightingale¡±.

According to ¡°The Advanced Learner¡¯s Dictionary of Current English¡±, the thrush is ¡°sorts of song-bird, especially the kind called song-thrush¡±; the nightingale is ¡°small, reddish-brown migratory bird that sings sweetly by night as well as by day¡±. From these two definitions of the bird we can see the birds themselves have some common features. That is, both of them are good at singing although in the poems these two birds have different symbolic meaning.

¶þ¡¢ The Contrast of ¡°The Darkling Thrush¡± and ¡°Ode to a Nightingale¡±.

1¡¢ The contrast of two poem¡¯s scene

In ¡°The Darkling Thrush¡±, the scene is desolate. The mood of the speaker is melancholy. ¡°Frost was spectre-gray, / And winter¡¯s dregs made desolate / The weakening eye of day.¡± Obviously ¡°The Darkling Thrush¡± is a poem about solidarity with nature. However, unlike Keats¡¯s unseen, ecstatic, blithe bird, the thrush in the poem is visible and ordinary. His description ¡°An aged thrush, frail, gaunt, and small, / In blast-beruffled plume¡± avoids the Romantic imagery of Keats¡¯s. Apparently a modern lament for the death of God , and of nature ( the sky is both the landscape¡¯s and the century¡¯s crypt ), the poem records the end of place and time. Set at the turning point between the old century and the new century, the awful scene developed in the image patterns of the first two stanzas is mirrored in the consciousness of the poet himself. The century¡¯s outleant corpse makes a parallel with the poet who ¡°leant upon a coppice gate¡±, ¡°the weakening eye of day¡± creates a metaphor for the poet¡¯s darkened vision, while the tangled bine-stems scoring the sky ¡° Like strings of broken lyres¡± is a further image to illustrate the desolate scene.

The poem ¡°The Darkling Thrush¡± is held between the world of human meanings and consolations and the bleakly inhospitable winter scene. The thrush¡¯s song is the climax of this whole tendency and the thrush itself, in his shriveled and unkempt physical presence , is the leading image despite the desolate scene. The bird¡¯s song involves absent-mindedness at odds with the scene around. And the song transmits a sense of happiness that is both real and insistent, as well as unsustainable within this surrounding physical environment at the end of the century. However the elements of joy in ¡°The Darkling Thrush¡± is not to deny the prevailingly somber mood of the scene in the poem, nor the dominant tenor of its conclusions and imagery. Skepticism and age cannot attain to any ¡°blessed hope¡±. And the only lyres in the poem are broken, ones made up by the tangled bine-stems. While there is in the scene nothing to endorse the inconvenient and inconsequential promptings of joy that arise from the bird¡¯s ¡°carolings¡±. The interesting fact is that the poem appears equally to encompass the contrary truth that these promptings are irresistible.

Unlike ¡°The Darkling Thrush¡± in which the bird sings the happy song and herald sweet hope despite the desolate winter atmosphere, John Keats¡¯s ¡°Ode to a Nightingale¡± describe the beautiful scene. However in the poem the speaker¡¯s mood is similar to the speaker¡¯s in ¡°The Darkling Thrush¡±. At first the speaker in the poem says ¡°My heart aches, and a drowsy numbness pains¡±. It¡¯s the speaker¡¯s mood. He is joy at hearing the nightingale¡¯s song, which, however, pains him. Then the poem describes human being¡¯s pain in third chapter. The poem relates in human world there is ¡°the weariness, the fever, and the fret¡±. An in human world ¡°men sit and hear each other groan,¡± ¡°palsy shakes a few, sad, last gray hairs¡± and ¡°youth grows pale, and spectre-thin, and dies/ where but to think is to be full of sorrow/ And leaden-eyed despairs, / Where Beauty cannot keep her lustrous eyes, / Dr new love pine at them beyond tomorrow¡±. The poem describes the sadness of the world, and the misery of human being.

In contrast to the misery of human world, the scene in the poem is beautiful. The bird, Nightingale, is happiness. It sings in full-throated ease. The trees are ¡°green beechen¡± which forms melodious plot. The poem is full of ¡°Tasting of Flora and the country green¡±. There are ¡°Dance, and Provencal Song, and sunburnt mirth¡±. The night is tender. ¡°And haply the Queen-Moon is on her throne/ Cluster¡¯d around by all her Starry Fays¡±. At the speaker¡¯s feet there are flowers, which send out walts of delicate fragrance. In a word, the nature is permeated with a harmonious atmosphere in which the misery human being live and the nightingale sing the happy song.

¡¢ The contrast of two bird¡¯s song symbolic meaning

¡°The Darkling Thrush¡±, like not a few of Hardy¡¯s, has come to suggest the progression and cadence of a hymn. But the blessed hope appropriate to a hymn is in complete obliviousness of such a song as the bird is singing£ its ¡°happy goodnight air¡± £ a line whose unexpectedness among the comparatively formal sobriety of the poem¡¯s diction, always moves the heart of the readers.

The ¡°joy illimited¡± and hope of the bird¡¯s singing are all the more moving for their incongruity and expectedness. At this moment, the speaker¡¯s (who is the listener of the thrush song) response is divided between a disillusioned consciousness of things and a reawakened sense of joy and communion that is oblivious to this. Then the bird¡¯s song signals possibilities that the tentative conclusion of the poem seems concerned to remark, and incorporate even as it suggests at the same time that such possibilities are not actualisable ¡°I could think there trembled through/ His happy good-night air/ Some blessed Hope, whereof he knew/ And I was unaware¡±.

As above-mentioned the thrush¡¯s song transmits a sense of happiness. That is both real and insistent. The song provokes a response, a surprise by joy that the speaker in the poem, fervourless and leaning upon the coppice gate is painfully aware that he is unable to live up to and translate into a lived experience. So the bird¡¯s song is heard to evoke a response to life that is inseparable from what gives life value, as well as incompatible with Hardy¡¯s vision of personal and historical circumstances. The song awakens hope.

The song of the bird set up an oscillation, between the inspired and the grimly literal, that is evident in many and minute ways in the poem, as in these four lines ¡°So little cause for carolings / Of such ecstatic sound / Was written on terrestrial things / Afar or nigh around¡±. There, the intricate felicities of sound and suggestion of the first two lines yield, in the last pair, to a more down to earth appraisal, a returning sense of the separated and drained elements of the scene. The thrush¡¯s song transcends the poet¡¯s power of comprehension, but it reawakens his powers of response and writing. In this respect, there is a clear connection, as well as analogy, between the mysterious song of the bird and this rediscovery, which it entails in the poet of his own equally enigmatic capacities, not only of feeling, but also of inspiration. What becomes important is not what the song means to the poet so much as what it does to him. And what it does is to evoke an affect of joy, which in turn passes into the writing.

In ¡°Ode to a Nightingale¡±, the song of the nightingale is the inspiration of the poet just like the aged thrush¡¯s arouses Hardy¡¯s inspiration. That means the poem was inspired by the singing of a nightingale that had built its nest close to the house of a friend of the poet in Hampstead. Like the thrush ¡°chosen thus to fling his soul / Upon the growing gloom¡± and its happy song bring sweet hope to the speaker and human being, the nightingale is ¡°light-winged Dryad of the trees¡± and ¡°being too happy in happiness¡±. However unlike the thrush in ¡°The Darkling Thrush¡± is visible and described as a common bird, ¡°frail, gaunt and small, / In blast-beruffled plume.¡± The nightingale is ¡°unseen¡±. It ¡°singest of summer in full-throated ease¡±. The nightingale is ¡°immortal bird¡±. So it¡¯s not born for death. It pours forth its soul in ¡°such an ecstasy¡±. So the nightingale and its song symbolize the beautiful world where the speaker is dreaming to arrive. Nevertheless the speaker in the end is left alone to face the cold reality again after the nightingale disappeared with its happy song.

So we can compare the two poem¡¯s development according to the birds song. In ¡°The Darkling Thrush¡±, the first chapter describes a desolate winter atmosphere, which reflects the speaker¡¯s gloom mood. In the second chapter the sad and desolate scene reach the climax because the death of the century. So ¡°every spirit¡± upon earth and ¡°I¡± are fervourless. However, in the third chapter, the thrush song brings the turning point. The bird is singing, which gives the world fervous. And in the last chapter the speaker is moved by the thrush¡¯s ¡°carolings¡±, ¡°ecstatic mood¡±. He knows the thrush¡¯s happy good-night air give the world ¡°some blessed hope¡±. In ¡°Ode to a Nightingale¡±, the bird¡¯s song is heard at first. So the speaker is drunk for the song. Then the speaker expresses his wish to live happy life in ¡°unseen world¡± with the bird. Then the poem turns back to the sadness of the world in which life is full of pain and misery and in which the young die and the old suffer. Later the ¡°speaker¡± attempts his flight from the sadness and tries to take another form £ not a liquor, the external thing, but ¡°poesy¡±, the inner state mind, is to free him. At this point the poems takes an unexpected turn, almost a somersault, for after proclaiming that the poet is ¡°already with thee¡±£ as if he could at a leap join mortal hope to an eternal being, ¡°the Queen Moon¡±£ he falls back into a world of time and changes a world where there is no light. But soon the speaker finds that he himself is in the wood in which flowers doom and die and seasons come and go. There he is conscious of his mortality and is drawn by the fantasy of dying to the nightingale¡¯s music. Then the speaker imagines a death, which is an ecstatic conclusion but then acknowledges that if he were dead the song would go unheard. At last the nightingale disappeared with its sweet song, the poet was left alone to face the cold reality again. Therefore we can compare the different mood in two poems which is aroused by the songs of the thrush and nightingale

Sadness ¡ú happy song ¡ú Sweet hope (The Darkling Thrush)

Happy ¡ú misery ¡ú illusion ¡ú disillusion (Ode to a Nightingale)

So the different birds arouses different the speaker¡¯s mood. And the root of the different is the different themes of the two poems

¡¢ The contrast of the two poem¡¯s theme

John Keats is one of famous Romantic poets. He lives in the early 1th century. Thomas Hardy is realist, pessimist and the herald of modernist. He lives in the late 1th century. Different period and different genre result in the different theme in their poets. Thomas Hardy¡¯ s recurrent themes are time, death and love. John Keats¡¯s eternal themes are beauty and truth. ¡°The Darkling Thrush¡±, which Hardy said, was written ¡°on the century¡¯s end¡±, climaxes a century which began with romantic bird poem, John Keats¡¯s ¡°Ode to a Nightingale¡±, P.B. Shelly¡¯s ¡°To a Sky-lark¡± and Wordsworth¡¯s various bird poems, and continued with other such poems through the century. Here Hardy recapitulates the tradition of the romantic bird which sings its diminished note within the void of the century¡¯s exhaustion.

The poem involved entering into the momentary delight or reverie of the speaker. The excitement, which the bird produces in the poem connects Hardy with those earlier poets who were also summoned by birds, and whose modified tones, rhythm and diction echo variously within ¡°The Darkling Thrush¡±. It is a poem in which Hardy is intrigued, in the first place, by the ways in which the bird¡¯s very unknowability £ its obliviousness to the poet himself, its different type of feeling £ is the condition for an unpremeditated encounter sound in which the poets finds a characteristic inspiration and affective summons.

Hardy regards nature as an organic unity, of which human life and society are microcosm, wholly subject to its governance. And Hardy¡¯ s language is figurative £ metaphor, symbolism and imagery. His figurative language is his dominant effect that carries the structure of feeling. In ¡°The Darkling Thrush¡±, the aged, wind-blown thrush is itself a beleagured figure of lyrical inspiration and tradition, a kind of alter-ego or counterpart whose song draws out Hardy the poet. The song of the thrush signals to Hardy the writer because there remain within his characteristic susceptibilities and gifts of articulation, which still find their echo within the insistent accents and movements of the bird. Whether the ¡°happy goodnight air¡± is really a song of hope or not, the poem is itself (despite all its counterposed elements of an explicit disenchantement), a joyful manifestation of the ways Hardy¡¯ s inimitable capabilities can surprise and displace the minds conscious attitudes. The bird¡¯s independent existence and its song appear not merely to move the poet, but to move him characteristically to a complementary artistic expression.

In the poem there is a sudden change from perception to sound. The muteness of the poet for whom the universe is dead, gives way to the thrush, which expresses hope and joy. Like Hardy himself (aged, frail, gaunt and small) the thrush is the governing symbol for continual creative activity. Like the poet, who is both observer and agent, the thrush creates his essential self by an act of will. He has ¡°chosen thus to fling his soul / Upon the growing gloom¡±¡ a defiant act of affirmation. It is also an unwitting act of loving-kindness that forges a contact between itself and the poet, creating a sense of solidarity with all living things. This is given a particular existential force by the poem¡¯s terrible context of non-being. A moment of happy apparently annihilates the tyranny of time. Hardy¡¯s poetry displays an extraordinary range of variations on major themes £ nature, time and memory, death and love.

However ¡°Ode to a Nightingale¡± is different from ¡°The Darkling Thrush¡± in theme. Keats is the most perfect of Romanticists. The one artistic aim in his poetry was always to create a beautiful world of imagination as opposed to the sordid reality of his day. His leading principle is ¡°Beauty is truth, truth beauty¡±. He pursued the principle in all things. At the bottom of his poems lies his dissatisfaction with the society in which he lived and experienced great miseries and sufferings.

The Ode was written and printed in 181. It was inspired by the singing of a nightingale. The poem has been celebrated for its evocative quality, for its scenes that shimmer with the magic of the imagination, and for the richness of its sensual imagery. And it is not only a piece of intricate verbal tapestry, nor merely a rich froth of emotion, but a profound statement about the human predicament. In the poem, the speaker expresses his yearning to free himself from the burden of human cares and anxieties and to immerse himself in a world of beauty together with the nightingale.

In the poem¡¯s full of rich poetic imagery, enchanting lyricism and well-nigh perfect turns of phrase, Keats shows his immense admiration for lasting beauty in the world of art as well as his intense personal yearning for freedom from human miseries. In the poem Keats relate to what happens in his mind while he is listening to the song of a nightingale. At first the speaker shows himself in a state of uncomfortable drowsiness under the magic of the nightingale¡¯s song. Envying the happiness of the bird, Keats longs for a draught of wine which take him out of himself and allow him to join his existence with that of the bird, and by the power of wine and imagination he could leave the world in which life is full of pain and misery, sorrow and despair. Here the poet shows his deep understanding of the miseries of the lower people in his society and his great sympathy for the poor and unfortunate people. And here we can see clearly the poet¡¯s inner contradiction between the ugly social reality all round him and his vain wish to leave it or forget it and through his contrasting the joys of the ¡°immortal bird¡± with the ¡°hungry generations¡±. By saying the word ¡°Forlorn¡±, the poet ends the poem with an acute sense of pain.

Keats sought to express beauty in all of his poems. In all his poems, there is a voice through which beauty expresses itself. He is part of nature which he describes. He expresses the delight which comes not only through the eye and the ear but through the senses of touch, taste and smell. His poems are distinguished by sensuousness and the perfection of form. So his ability to appeal to the senses through language is unrivaled.

Èý¡¢ Conclusion

Thomas Hardy¡¯s ¡°The Darkling Thrush¡± owe to John Keats¡¯s ¡°Ode to a Nightingale¡±. So they have some similar aspects. First, both of the poems express the sadness, gloomy melancholy and misery of human world. In ¡°The Darkling Thrush¡±, except for the Thrush¡¯s song everything is forlorn, even thrush itself is in not good condition. It is only an aged thrush, ¡°frail, gaunt, and small / In blast-beruffled plume¡±. So the happy song of the birds form sharp contrast with the speaker, the human being and the desolate winter scene. However in ¡°Ode to a Nightingale¡± the human being lives misery in a human world, the whole nature is beautiful and happy. So the human world and the nature form sharp contrast. Second, both of the poems express the hope and dream to a beautiful world. Although the thrush¡¯s hope is not realized by the speaker, the nightingale arouses the happiness and illusion. When the nightingale and its songs disappea, the speaker feels disillusion.

However both poems have many different aspects. First, in ¡°The Darkling Thrush¡± the scene is desolate and feverless, in the ode the scene is joy and beauty. Second the thrush¡¯s song is the symbol of the hope, but the speaker doesn¡¯t know what is hope, while the nightingale¡¯s song arouses the poet¡¯s dream to the perfection world with the bird¡¯s song, but he becomes disillusionment at last. Third the themes of the two poems are different. ¡°The Darkling Thrush¡± seems to say that the momentary happiness would defeat time. ¡°Ode to a Nightingale¡± expresses the poet¡¯s Romantic imagination and relates to the poet¡¯s sympathy for the people who live in misery lives, and relates to the poet¡¯s dream to seek out the perfection world. In a world, ¡°The Darkling Thrush¡± and ¡°Ode to a Nightingale¡±, two poems expresses some similar subject as well as many different aspects.

There is a very wide range of income for individuals and families in California. In our society today, we have types of classifications of people. The wealthiest of people are called the upper class, then there is a middle class which is the average income, and lastly there is the lower class. The lower class is considered to be in poverty. Poverty is a condition in which a person or family does not have the means to satisfy basic needs of food, clothing, shelter, and transportation. Poverty is not determined by what race a person is even though many people in our nation categorize it that way. Poverty exist everywhere in the nation, state, and even in our own town.

There are many different factors that contribute to the poverty rates in California, from the increase of the unemployment to the decrease in government income maintenance programs. Even though the government offers many different programs for people in poverty there is still a substantial amount of people not being able to provide for their own families. The government offers social insurance programs such as Medicare which provides hospital insurance for the elderly and disabled, and unemployment compensation which allows workers that are unemployed for a while to collect thirty-five percent of their lost wages. The government also provides programs that supply food stamps and welfare to the people that qualify for such programs. The

government spends about 76 billion of its dollars on these different types of programs.

Poverty can be caused by many different situations. For example many single parents in California are in poverty. As you can imagine raising children with two parents is hard enough, so raising a child on your own can be more then a hand full. The average parent spends about 100,000 dollars on one child before the age of eighteen. Being a single parent you may be forced to work two to three jobs trying to support your children. Another example is an elderly person who all of a sudden needs a very expensive surgery that their insurance will not cover. They are forced to pay for the operation for as the consequence would be death. This could put a person in a substantial amount of debt which would lead to poverty. As everyone knows there are homeless people across the nation. In California homelessness is a huge problem. Being homeless is the lowest point of poverty that I can think of. Not only can you not support your family, but you can not even support yourself. These are just a few poverty problems we have in California.

The government will try anything to get rid of poverty, but unfortunately there are many conflicts the government face by helping these lower class people. Some say the government is paying too much money out to the people, which would cause some to be too dependent on the government for their income instead of working for it. Another conflict is that it is very costly to the government to keep paying for able-bodied workers. These government programs must be working because the poverty rate is declining each year. There are more and more people getting jobs and getting off public assistance programs. In my own opinion, poverty is decreasing because people are realizing that public assistance programs are getting tougher and tougher to receive.

As you can imagine the government would want an equally divided community. Hopefully soon our state and even nation will not know the meaning of poverty. But we must always remember what it was like so it will be harder to go back to. With every conflict we face as a community we must learn from it and come together to fix it. Every year more and more people are going to college which will provide a better future for not only the people but the community. The choice is ours, what kind of community do you want to live in?

e-Business Models

The remarkable growth of the Internet and connectivity to the Internet by individuals and businesses alike has brought many opportunities to create new industries and new efficiencies within businesses and between businesses. These opportunities can be seen in the different e-business models that are currently providing benefits to organizations.

This paper evaluates how BB companies like merisel.com establish webs sites that add value for suppliers and other business users. This paper provides a value analysis and justification for the product, service and information exchange of Amazon.com a leading BC web site. It evaluates how CC companies like Edeal.com forms virtual marketplace communities. It also focuses on how these sites are set up through “Porter’s Value Chain” and an “Analysis Task Chart” supplied by the University of Phoenix. The final section concludes the paper.

Business to Business (BB) Model Analysis

Cheap Custom Essays on e-Business Models Paper

Electronic commerce that creates relationships between businesses is known as a Business-to-Business (BB) model. BB EC models are expected to reach ten trillion dollars by 005 (Turban et. al. 00, p. 401). BB transactions involve either spot buying (i.e. purchase of good and services at market prices) or strategic sourcing (i.e. long term contracts based on negotiation between buyer and seller). Transactions occur within company-centric models, many-to-many marketplaces, or other models which help eliminate paper, speed cycle-time, reduce error, increase productivity, reduce cost, and increase customer service and partnership management (pg. 40, 404). An example of a BB business is merisel.com as discussed below.

Meriesel.com

Merisel provides software dealers the license to resell. The company distributes software licenses and reseller products from vendors including as Borland, Computer Associates, Corel, Network Associates, Panda, and Symantec (Internet). It also provides resellers with the latest vendor promotional programs, volume discounts, and technical data and support. In addition, Merisel offers e-commerce and logistics support services.

The company follows a commodity sales model in its BB strategy. It builds partnerships with various software vendors and sells licensing through its reseller network. Its customized electronic commerce application was designed to improve and develop strong Internet connections with their customers. In addition to quick searches, the on-line catalog encourages orders over the Web and offers logistic services and e-commerce solutions. In September of 00, the company re-engineered its SELline web site for online license configuration and procurement tool for resellers including real-time pricing, e-mail, interactive online information services for marketing programs, storage of quotations, trial downloads, detailed product information and product news and promotions (Merisel, 00). The EC application simplifies ordering through a “wizard” that automatically configures licensing tiers while calculating the media and documentation needs of each order (Merisel, 00).

Business to Consumer (BC) Model Analysis

The Business to Consumer (BC) model is a classification of electronic commerce that creates a direct relationship with the consumer without distributors, wholesalers, or dealers (Turban et. al. 00, p. 8). B-to-C businesses account for half of todays Web sites and spend $7.5 billion in operating, maintenance, and development costs (Pastore, 001). Turban (00) quotes emarketer.com as reporting “75 million individual Internet users participated in some from of on-line shopping (BC) in 001”.

Amazon.com

Amazon.com build customer loyalty by focusing on what A.T. Kearney (001) calls the “7Cs.” The “7Cs” are community, connectivity, customer care, communication, content, customization, and convenience. Yet below the surface of the web, a sophisticated series of activities creates additional value. Value chain analysis and the University of Phoenix “Analysis Task Chart” provide the tools needed to analyze and justify such value.

In 180, M.E. Porter presented a model to systematically examine the development of competitive advantage (Marketingteacher.com, 00). Porter’s Value Chain (see Figure 1) consists of a series of primary and support activities that build value. The diagram’s “margin” equates to added value while primary activities are “chained” together through support activities.

Consumer to Consumer (CC) Model Analysis

The Consumer-to-consumer (CC) is a type of electronic commerce where consumers sell directly to other consumers. CC allows you to form a virtual marketplace community where buyers and sellers can trade products.

Edeal.com

Edeal.com allows you to form a virtual marketplace community right on your own web site. You, or anyone who visits your site, can list products for sale, and anyone who visits can bid on those items. You can display all of the edeal Network categories, or only those you select, plus all of the items listed for sale in those categories. This business model allows you to create your own commerce site that can instantly be stocked with as many listings as are available on the entire edeal Network.

The edeal.com C--C model also allows you to generate additional revenue by bringing both sellers and buyers to the transaction. For every buyer or seller that you bring to the Network, edeal will pay you a commission in return for final value fees paid by you to edeal for sales closed on your site. To receive a commission, you must first pay an annual license fee to edeal in the desired amount set out on the homepage. The value of revenue share you obtain from edeal depends on the value of the license fee you pay to edeal. Commission percentage returns on final value fees (FVF) are set out according to edeals C--C Revenue Share model.

Conclusion

This paper provides insights for the manager who seeks to weave e-commerce strategies into a company’s overall business plan. It studied the different e-business models of three leading web sites, Meriesel.com, Amazon.com, and Edeal.com, and provided justification for the value exchange between product, service and information. The analysis employed “Porter’s Value Chain,” and “Analysis Task Chart,” and a number of research sources to support its findings.

Each company analyzed offers a broad based view of how businesses build e-commerce into their corporate plans. As such, the manager can draw upon their example to begin the process of formulating a thorough e-business model plan.

Background

Matthew Flinders was born the oldest son of a surgeon-apothecary in the market town of Donington, Lincolnshire, in 1774. When Flinders was young he dreamed of wealth and fame, while reading of exotic locations in Robinson Crusoe and conscious of complaints by his father about their lack of money.

Matthew Flinders refused to follow in the footsteps of his father into medical practice. Instead he decided to pursue a career in the Royal Navy, where there was the prospect of prize money and the chance to make a name for himself.

When Flinders was fifteen years old he joined the H.M.S ALERT in October 178, as a Lieutenant’s servant. In 171 he sailed with Captain Bligh on the Providence and later with Captain Hunter. During the late 170’s Flinders’ sailed to Australia and established him as a first class navigator, an excellent cartographer and a man of determination. Flinders was a self-educated navigator.

Cheap University Papers on Australian beginnings

Matthew Flinders was a diminutive man at just 167 cm; he was fearless to the point of recklessness. This is what enabled him to captain his ship, Investigator, around the uncharted and treacherous Australian coastline. It is also what is believed to have led him to his imprisonment for six and a half years, when he should have been living in the glory of his achievements.

Achievements and Difficulties

In 175 Flinders first sailed to Australia aboard the Reliance for the British Navy. Matthew Flinders and George Bass bought an eight-foot long boat called Tom Thumb to explore the southern coastline of Australia. They first sailed south of Sydney and rowed up the Georges River. During 175- 178 they had mapped much of the southeast coast of Australia. In 178 Bass and Flinders sailed around Tasmania proving it to be an island. They were the first Europeans to realize that Tasmania was an island. Flinders returned to England aboard the Reliance in 1800.

In 1801, Flinders returned to Australia as Captain aboard the Investigator. He first sighted land at Cape Leeuwin. ‘On this second trip he mapped the entire south coast of Australia, from Cape Leeuwin to the Spencer Gulf to the Bass Strait. ). On July , 180, he sailed to the east coast of Australia, mapping the coastline from Port Jackson (where Sydney is located) up to the Gulf of Carpentaria. He continued west and then south, sailing completely around Australia; he returned to Port Jackson on June , 180, even though his boat was leaking badly. This was the first time anyone had sailed around Australia. Flinders was placed in charge of the Investigator to make a thorough survey of the Australian coastline. He had been married three months earlier and was expecting to take his wife along but Admiralty had other ideas. It was eight years before husband and wife met again.’

Flinders returned to England in 180 aboard the Cumberland. He had to stop for repairs at Mauritius. ‘Thinking he was a spy; the French kept him prisoner for 6 1/ years and stole his charts and papers (he was released when the British took over the island). He didnt arrive home until 1810, and reached home sick and a forgotten man. He wrote an account of his travels, called Voyage to Terra Australis Undertaken for the Purpose of Completing the Discovery of that Vast Country, and died the day after it was published.’

One word

I’m tying to write this essay on one of the roughest days of my life, so it’s not easy. When the assignment was left, I had no idea how hard it would be to find a word that describes me. I have wondered if the word that I believe describes myself is the same word others would choose to describe me. I am a bizarre person. The reason I choose this word to describe me is simply because it was suggested by my only friend. However, it fits me quite well. After all, I do hear odd music, and act somewhat unusual. Sometimes I find myself acting in ways I don’t even understand; like pretending I’m a chicken in front of a complete stranger, or simply throwing my arms around me and dancing weird. I have no idea what controls my actions, but I sure do very crazy shit. In fact, after today, I’m prone to doing very crazy/stupid things, acting bizarre for those who have no clue what just happened, for those who don’t understand. But after all, “saying something is stupid is often a sign of ignorance.”

But, how accurate is bizarre for me? After all I’m not “strikingly unconventional,” or am I? I’d say some times but not always. However, once you get to truly know me, you’d believe I’m a weirdo. Sitting on a car and hearing my music would make you dizzy, it would drive you nuts. I have difficulties finding people who like my music; often times I’m begged to change the music. The fact that I might start screaming this moment or the next makes people around me feel uneasy. I somehow act like a freshman.

Finally, to discover the real bizarre in me, you would need to know me. But ask Sebastián Villarreal, I’ve scared him a couple of times already with my bizarreness. He suggested the word, and it fits incredibly well. Maybe one day you’ll find out about the things I couldn’t describe, maybe because I was to ashamed, couldn’t find the words, or simply because this day sucked.

The Arctic Region

There are probably many people who wonder what is the Arctic Region? What animals or people live there? Well for those who may not know, the Arctic Region is made up of oceans surrounded by continental land masses and islands. The Central Arctic Ocean is covered with ice all year-round, and snow and ice are on the land for most of the year. The southern limit of the Arctic Region is place at the Arctic Circle (latitude 66 degrees, minutes north). The Arctic Circle is an imaginary line that marks the latitude above where the sun doesn’t set on the day of summer, which is usually June 1st and doesn’t rise on the day of winter usually December 1st. North of this latitude, periods of on-going daylight or night last up to six months at the North Pole. The warmest month is below 50 degrees Fahrenheit/ 10 degrees Celsius. The coldest month is about minus 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below.

Besides the Arctic Region and its climate, there are animals that live in and adapt to the Arctic Region. Some of the animals that live in this climate are the Walrus, Arctic Fox, and the Musk ox. The way these animals adapt to their surroundings is very smart. Let’s take the walrus for example. According to the article Life in a Deep Freeze, the walrus keeps warm even while digging for clams on the bottom of cold ocean waters. The walrus has a 6-inch layer of blubber to block out the cold. During deep-sea dives, warm blood moves away from the top of the skin to the inside of the body. This helps the walrus keep its body heat stable at about degrees Fahrenheit. When the walrus moves to shore, blood flows back to the skin. On the other hand, the Arctic Fox adapts to the Arctic region differently. As the winter comes, the fox changes its brown summer fur for a longer, heavier snow-white coat. The new coat keeps the fox warm and

hidden from predators, like the wolf. A special blood flow system helps the fox hang onto its normal body temperature. Warm blood going through the fox’s legs heat up the cool blood coming back from its feet. This means that the Arctic has a warm body and cold feet, but having cold feet is good for the fox because ice doesn’t stick to cold toes. Moreover, the Musk ox also has a different way to adapt to the Arctic Region. It has lots of hair to keep it warm. The Musk ox’s hairy outer coat covers everything but its feet. Underneath the outside layer of the long, thick hair is even more hair-a soft woolly coat. The Musk ox sheds this hair when the weather gets warmer. Muskoxen also have curved hooves with sharp rims. That gives them good footing on icy slopes.

Apart from animals living in the Arctic Region and adapting to their surroundings, there are people who are called indigenous people who are people originally living in a certain area or region. Indigenous people who live in the Arctic have adapted to the environment using different kinds of strategies. Depending on the location where they live, indigenous people depend on marine animals as a type of food to eat. Hunted animals involve caribous, reindeers, muskoxen, seals, walruses, whales, birds like ducks and geese, and fish. Gathering plants and berries for sources of food and medicinal purposes is also important. The indigenous people of the Arctic are also very smart in navigating and understanding the Arctic environment.

The people of the Arctic depend on the rivers and oceans as another type of food and as a way to move around. They are very good at reading the conditions of the weather, land, snow, ice etc… to help them navigate well.

--

As you can see, despite the cold weather in the Arctic Region, there are people and animals that actually live and adapt to this type of weather. It’s kind of neat how different people and animals around the United States adapt to their cold weather surroundings versus people and animals that live in the Arctic Region. I know it’s a big difference in both locations because what’s cold for humans and animals in the United States might be warm for humans and animals in the Arctic Region. Either way, it would be interesting for anyone to one day visit the Arctic Region and compare it to their home climate or vise-versus.

Throughout the entire USA there are 44 States that allow laws for a process called Spiritual Healing to exist. Spiritual healing is where people belong to a religion that does not believe in modern medicine or healthcare. The question today is ‘Should the spiritual healing law exist in 44 out of the 50 States?’ The answer to this is no. When a young child is ill it should be a mandatory procedure to take that sick child to a doctor for medical treatment. Just because this kids parents are people who believe in treating sickness through “magical” prayers, doesn’t mean that the child should be held from its right to live. I do believe however in freedom of religion, but to a certain extent. I see the situation as more the parents being stubborn and ignorant to technology. If science has created ways to beat the everyday illnesses then we should all gladly commit to these methods so we can live longer and healthier lives.

Throughout this video people mention how viruses cannot hear prayer and unfortunately this is a know fact. A virus cannot be stopped simply because we kindly ask for it. They must be treated with anti-viruses and other antibiotics. People have wake up and change their old ways. The world is improving and for that we should all be appreciative. The questioned family in this video should have cut their losses after the first child died because ‘Spiritual Healing’ failed. But to be that ignorant as to lose another child is sickening to think these people are voting and participating as our countries strives for success.

In this episode of Law and Order the people who even believe in spiritual healing are in a sense questioning their religion by saying that ‘no religion is perfect’ and ‘our religion is not perfect’. Here this should be evidence enough to not even attempt to gamble on a child’s life. If spiritual healing is not a for sure bet then why risk losing a life when medical science procedures are a certainty. This is clearly why the spiritual healing law should be exempt from all states within the USA.

In the essay “The Semiotics of Home Dcor”, Joan Kron discusses how people desire control over their possessions. She gives many reasons why people own certain possessions and reasons to why they are so important to the person. I agree with many of the points that she offers, but I also disagree with a few. Kron discusses that the homes you live in, the cars you drive, or even the people you interact with are all signs of how well you’re doing in society or the money that you have. People buy certain items to show wealth, competition, status, or a reflection of self. Kron writes Whether or not it is human nature to be acquisitive, it appears that our household goods have a more meaningful place in our lives than they have been given credit for. What comes across in a wide variety of research is that things matter enormously. Our possessions give us a sense of security and stability. People have put objects such as cars and homes high on the priority list in order to feel secure and stable in their environment and in front of their peers.

People today put so much value on a disposable item that we can buy and replace at our convenience, I feel we have lost hold of the most valuable item we have ever been given and that is life itself. Life gives us a sense of both security and stability. The very breath we breathe gives us security in life and our loves ones give us the stability to deal with the tough road that life leads us down. The cars, houses, cell phones, and even the cribs are just luxuries to our lives. These luxuries just give us added comfort. For without life these luxury possessions would have no value, no meaning, and no security. They would have no existence.

Life was given first and we have truly put it last. We have placed it in the back seat to material possessions. We have almost made it disposable. We find ourselves investing more time in our jobs in order to create more money to buy more toys. Kron’s argument, which may be applied to the thinking of some “rich clothing” buyers, “One aspect of personalization is the big I, Identity. Making distinctions between ourselves and others.” People wear a certain brand of clothing to give themselves and identity or to join the identity that one brand portrays. I believe that it doesn’t matter what clothes you wear of what cars you drive, but it’s what is inside of a person that matters the most.

How else should one relate to the Joneses if not by keeping up with them, asked Mary Douglas provocatively. The principle of reciprocity requires people to consume at the same level as ones friends. If we accept hospitality, we have to offer it in return. And that takes the right equipment and the right setting. But we need things for more than keeping level with our friends. We human beings are not only tool maker but symbol makers as well, and we use our possessions in the same way we use language, the quintessential symbol, to communicate with one another. According to Douglas, goods make the universe more intelligible. They are more than messages to ourselves and others, they are the hardware and the software of an information system. Possessions speak a language we all understand, and we pay close attention to the inflections, vernacular, and exclamations. I believe that the possessions you own do not make you higher up in society. Other people make look at you as if they do. Possessions are just things, they aren’t real. What’s real in society is the people that live in it and all the different kinds of lifestyles that you have the chance in your life to be introduced to them. Happiness is not having wealth, but more or less it is if you are happy with just being who you are.

I believe Kron did a very good job in her essay helping people that read it become more in touch with there selves. Possessions in life do make you happy to a point. The best part is if you have someone in your life to enjoy those possesions with. I still agree with a few of Kron’s points in her essay, but not with all. After reading her essay, though, it helps me to think more of a person than just what kinda of lifestyle they appear to have.

Reflective Essay Coping With Bereavement

Death. It was never really an issue that I had to face in my family until recently. Okay, well apart from a few beloved childhood pets but it’s not the same. I still have both sets of grandparents and many great aunts and uncles. I’m even blessed still to have my great granny whose fighting fit and approaching her ninety- sixth birthday next month. Death. It’s such a horrible part of life, don’t you think? It’s what took Sam away from us. A dad of two, only in his mid forties, still in the prime of his life. He was forty-five when he “passed on”. Forty-five. That’s not old. It wouldn’t have been so hard to face if it was some “poor wrinkly old buddy,” lying bed ridden for years upon end. But it wasn’t, it was our Sam. Sam my dad’s best friend and also my best friend’s dad. I realise that everyone must die some day and nobody can live forever but it wasn’t his turn. Not yet.

It was that dreaded “mass murderer” who killed him. The killer who claims millions of lives per year. You may have heard of him he goes by the name of … Cancer. It started off as what was believed to be a bug but progressed and evolved into that treacherous disease that took his life.

Isn’t it sad how some people could foolishly choose to abuse their bodies, inflicting disease on themselves with alcohol, cigarettes and drugs when others have no choice at all. This was the case with Sam. He was an enthusiastic footballer and keen golfer who didn’t smoke or drink alcohol and yet, fate’s path led him down that ever-fearful road the road of no return. This has changed my perception of justice in the world. Before, I thought that if someone took care of themselves by eating healthy and taking exercise they would naturally live longer. Now, however, I have realised that it doesn’t make a difference.

I’ll never forget my dad’s phone call telling me that Sam had been diagnosed with cancer and that he only had a few more months left to live. I tried to hold back the tears, but failed. There are no words to describe how I felt. I couldn’t accept what he was telling me. I kept saying to myself that it wasn’t true and that he’d get better. He couldn’t die. He’s far too young. He’s the same age as my dad. I went straight to my bed but couldn’t sleep. The word “CANCER” kept swirling round and around inside my head like water in a bath just before it’s about to go down the plughole.

My heart went out to Lisa. It still does every day. The agony that she must have been facing when she found out seems unbearable. She had to watch her dad being sick all the time and see him slipping further and further away before her very eyes. Even if Sam wanted to spend a day with his children there had to be someone there to help with simple everyday tasks such as cooking because he was unable.

He received chemotherapy and would take any drug or antidote the doctors suggested in the hope that it might cure him. Unfortunately, months went by and he continued to look grey and drawn. He completely lost his appetite and this resulted in him growing frightfully thin. Whenever I saw a charity box for cancer research I always made a point of giving any spare change. I wanted to help in any way I could. Good health must be one of the very few things in life that money just can’t buy. I’m sure that he’d have traded a million lottery jackpot wins for him to recover. We all felt so useless. All we could do was wait.

What was happening to Sam pulled me closer to my own dad and made me appreciate him more than ever before. I made an effort to see him every weekend instead of what used to be once a fortnight. Whenever I was going away I always made sure that I said goodbye to him. You must always say goodbye, “just in case.” I couldn’t help thinking what if it was my dad in Sam’s shoes? It could just as well have been. They are both of similar age, both have two children aged fifteen and thirteen at the time, separated from their wives and living alone, they share the same hobbies… The list is endless. Sam did nothing bad to deserve it.

As December was drawing near the glimmer of hope that I held deep down inside my heart that he’d get better began to fade. The morning of the 6th 00 was the day he died. My dad’s bleary eyed, puffy face greeted me home from school that day. I knew immediately by his expression that Sam had gone. I needed to sit down, as my legs were no longer able to support my weight. I felt physically sick. It was as if someone had kicked me in the stomach and taken the wind out of my sails. My heart ached. It ached mostly for Lisa, but also for my dad. I can’t imagine how Lisa felt. I thought I was as worked up as anyone could ever be but she must have been a million times worse. I phoned Lisa but I was unable to talk. I had no words. Nothing could describe how I felt for her. The words “I’m sorry” managed to escape my tightly closed lips. I heard her burst into tears before she hung up the phone. It was maybe too soon for her to talk. I realise this now. I just wanted her to know I was there for her and she could pick up the phone and speak to me at any time. Sometimes it’s nice to talk to someone outside your own family. It lets you escape from it all for a while. This whole experience has taught me that I must choose my words carefully and be more tactful when speaking to a bereaved family. I must also be prepared to listen a lot more because I have learned they like to reminisce about times they shared in the past, good times and bad.

The funeral was by far the worst bit for me. I’d never been to one before. I hate them. It’s not until you see the coffin that it actually dawns on you that he’s not coming back. It was awful. I don’t think I even said goodbye to him the last time I saw him. Normally I love singing hymns at weddings and christenings but I couldn’t do it. I looked over towards Lisa and she caught my eye. My throat seized up again. I could hardly see the words in the book through my tears never mind force a sound out. As I looked around, I saw everyone who meant something to Sam. All there to pay their respect. It was so sad. Far too sad in fact.

I couldn’t get out fast enough. I caught a glimpse of Lisa in the back of her auntie’s car, tears streaming down her cheeks. I fought back my tears to give her a little wave. I wanted to run up and give her a big hug and tell her “everything will get better” but on that day, it seemed a silly thing to say. Going to the cemetery would have been too upsetting for me so I went straight home.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary the verb to die means “to stop living”. If this is the case then I believe that Sam is not really “dead”. Yes, of course his body is no longer here but his spirit definitely still is. Personally, I think that when you pass over your spirit remains and watches over the loved ones you have left behind. Writing this made me realise how much I missed his smile and the cheeky little wink as he walked by. He really was a great man. Always so full of life. Even in his last weeks his distinctive passion for life and optimism didn’t differ. I must admit, I have never actually been to visit his grave and I am very ashamed of that. I owe it to him to do so but I’ve just been too frightened. I think it is important to visit the grave as a mark of respect and remembrance. It shows that even though he died, I haven’t forgotten about him. It probably would clarify to me that I would never see him again and that his body is actually buried underneath the grave stone.

Losing someone special made me realise that I should really appreciate my family and friends and that I should regularly tell them how much they mean to me. People don’t realise just how lucky they are to wake up in the morning with no aches and pains. Life really is so short and you should never take it for granted. You never know what’s just around the corner…

On June 16, 00, I received a citation for a Minor in Possession of Alcohol which affected my athletic eligibility for the fall basketball season. The next day, I went to talk to Mr Kimball and let him know what had happened. I did this before I even talked to my parents. I also spoke with Coach Hoyt about what had happened. I told both Mr Kimball and Mr Hoyt I was ready to accept my punishment and that I accepted full responsibility for my actions. I also spoke with my teammates about what had happened and encouraged them not to make the same mistake that I had made. The charge was later reduced to disorderly conduct and there is no M.I.P. on my record.

While I agree that I should be punished, the reason for my appeal is in regards to the date that the suspension should begin. According to the Athletic Code of Conduct, the off-season penalty begins with the first allowable day of practice for the sport in which the athlete participates. I was told by Mr Kimball that my suspension would begin August 11, 00. My first allowable day of practice was actually July 14th. Beginning with that date, Mr Hoyt required his players to be at mandatory practices and scrimmages. The mandatory schedule was as follows

July 14th Practice

July 15, 17, , 4 Scrimmages

Do my essay on love song CHEAP !

July 8, , 0 Team Camp

We were required to adjust our schedules to be at all of these sessions. Therefore, I am appealing the starting date of my suspension and feel that it should start on July 14 rather than August 11 as July 14 was the actual first allowable day of practice. In addition, I have attended all of these practice sessions as well as having met the weight room requirements and the running requirements throughout the summer and have worked hard and maintained a positive attitude. In spite of my situation, I am encouraging and supporting my teammates.

I have attached the summer practice schedule for reference as to the mandatory requirements. The dates have changed, however, since the schedule was handed out last Spring.

Respectfully,

Jamie A, Miller
