I believe a fetus should have rights because of my culture, religion, and

experience. If you are responsible enough to have sex, you should be responsible for your actions. A fetus has a heartbeat, legs and arms, fingers and toes, and eyes at eight weeks after conception. The fetus may only be an inch long but it is still a human life. I believe there should be rights to protect a fetus. I grew up in south Florida and it seemed every year younger and younger kids were having sex. I had a steady boyfriend through high school and a very open relationship with my mother. She talked to me about sex, contraception, and the consequences of my actions. Sex education can play a very positive role a teenager’s life, I know it did in mine. I was raised as a Catholic and the church had a strong influence on my beliefs. When I was in eighth grade I attended CCD or Sunday school. The church showed us a video of an abortion procedure, after the fetus was taken out of the mother it was tossed in a trash can. In the trash can you could see other fetus and blood. I remember crying throughout the whole video. The Catholic Church sure knows how to brainwash. Now I’m more educated and know not all I was told as a child was necessarily true. From the time I was thirteen until now I have had a quite a few friends become pregnant. Some of the girls decided on abortion and others chose to have the baby. I support my friends, but who supports the fetus? If a fetus did have rights who would speak for it? If the government spoke for the fetus then it would depend on the opinions of the President, Congress, and the courts. If religious groups spoke for the fetus there would be no abortions. There would need to be a neutral person(s) to speak for the fetus.

The first article I came across on the internet supported my beliefs. It was an article from The Christian Science Monitor titled “South Carolina tests the bounds of a fetus’s rights.” In this article the courts of South Carolina are deciding if the state can press charges against drug abusing pregnant mothers. A woman in South Carolina gave birth to a still born baby with high levels of cocaine in its bloodstream. The courts are deciding if she should be charged with child abuse or murder. The states are cracking down on drug abusive mothers. “As a result of this trend, some 00 women in 0 states have been charged for violating some kind of ‘fetal rights’” (The Christian Science Monitor). I found this article to use opinion based evidence because it took place in South Carolina and they have more laws and opinions about “fetal rights.” The evidence is obviously biased because not all women are being prosecuted and not all states are supporting it.

The other article I found to support my belief was from the Catholic Educator’s Resource Center. I found this article to also be bias because the author is a pro-life supporter and philosopher. The article is called “The Apple Argument Against Abortion” and it states thirteen principles or steps to prove fetus should have rights. The author exaggerates by saying babies all over are being slaughtered. “Traditional common sense and morality say all humans are persons and have rights” (Kreeft). the author asks a pro-choicer to stand up and prove that a fetus is not a person. Some of Kreeft’s thirteen principles are observational evidence, but some of the principles are strongly opinionated.

The next article I read went against my belief that a fetus should have rights. The article, “Abortion When do rights begin?” was written in the Capitalism Magazine. The author says individual rights begin at birth, but a fetus is only part of the mother. A fetus before five months can not survive on its own so how can it be given rights? The author believes only the mother has rights and her rights include the right to control her body; before, during, and her pregnancy. “Those who assert that a woman has no right to an abortion are willing to condemn her and her husband to the responsibilities of parenthood, as a duty, rather than as a chosen value” (Lewis). The evidence found in this article is obviously opinionated because the whole article is based on the author’s opinion with no observational evidence. I also believe this article is biased because it doesn’t show another point of view.

The last article I read was also against my belief. “Students Clash Over Bill that would Protect Fetus’ Rights” was written in The New York Times College section. The article is about Laci Petterson and her unborn son Connor Petterson. Laci and Connor’s bodies were found along a shoreline after they had gone missing for four months. Now Congress is trying to pass a law called the “Laci and Connor’s Law” stating that anyone charged with murdering a pregnant women shall be charged with both crimes. Abortion-rights activist say that it is unconstitutional to punish the murderer twice. “There are better alternatives to punishing criminals who commit violent crimes against pregnant women, a majority of the states already have laws established to punish criminal acts that result in harm to pregnancy” (Bear). I thought this article used opinion based evidence because the author is an abortion-rights activist and the entire article is based on her opinions. The evidence used in this article if free because the court shows the steps in Laci and Connor’s court case.

There are situations that could have an impact on my belief that a fetus should have rights. If I (or anyone) was raped and became pregnant I would consider abortion as an option. I would want the right to have the option. I feel having the baby would be a horrible experience for the baby and myself. I would have to look at my child everyday and remember that horrendous crime. I would also consider abortion if my life was in jeopardy. If I could not deliver my baby and survive, again I would like to have the option. Another experience that would challenge my belief would be if my teenage daughter came home pregnant. I would hope I could educate her about the importance of sex and contraception. I would have to know in my heart that she could make right decision, but it would be important that she have options. I feel there are certain situations that abortion may be the right choice, but I disapprove of people using abortion as a form of birth control. In conclusion, a fetus should have rights but a mother should have rights also.

Printmaking is an art form consisting of the production of images, usually on paper but occasionally on fabric, parchment, plastic, or other support, by various techniques of multiplication, under the direct supervision of or by the hand of the artist. These fine prints, are considered original works of art, even though they can exist in multiples. There are many different forms of printmaking.

Engraving is a form of printmaking that includes the cutting is done by a graver, or burin, on a copper, zinc, aluminum, or magnesium plate, and the design is printed with a roller press from ink rubbed into the incised grooves. Wood engraving came from the woodcut, but the use of the hard, smooth boxwood, cut with the burin commonly used by the copper-plate engraver, produces a finer, more detailed image. By contrast with engraving from metal plates, the printing of wood engravings is done from the surface of the plate or block; the parts that are not to be printed are cut away.

Etching is also another method of printmaking. This is the method of engraving in which lines or textures are bitten, or etched, into a metal plate, usually copper, with acid. The image produced has a spontaneity of line that comes from drawing on the plate in the same direct way as with pen or pencil on paper. The first etchings date from the early 16th century, but the basic principle had been used earlier for the decoration of armor. Many pioneers of this were Albrecht Altdorfer, Albrecht Durer, and Parmigianino, but the greatest of all etchers was Rembrandt. In the 0th century, etching has been especially popular for book illustration.

Mezzotint is a collaboration of both of the previous types of printmaking. Engraved or etched lines are often introduced to give the design greater definition. Mezzotint was invented in Holland by Ludwig von Siegen in the 17th century but thereafter was practiced primarily in England. Its adaptability to making color prints made it ideal for reproduction of paintings. After the invention of photography it was rarely used. In recent years the technique has been revived, especially by U.S. and Japanese printmakers.

Finally, woodcut one of the oldest methods of making prints, it was used in China to decorate textiles from the 5th century. Printing from wood blocks on textiles was known in Europe from the early 14th century, but developed little until paper began to be manufactured in France and Germany at the end of the 14th century. In the early 15th century, religious imagesand playing cards were first made from wood blocks. Black-line woodcut reached its greatest perfection in the 16th century with Albrecht Durer and his followers. In the late 1th and early 0th century, artists such as Edvard Munch, Paul Gauguin, and the German Expressionists rediscovered the expressive potential of woodcuts. Woodcuts have played an important role in the history of Japanese art

Math is important in our lives today for a number of reasons. These include the fact that it helps with regard to our knowledge and understanding of worldly issues through economics and politics. Math also comes out through aspects of our everyday lives, and can have definite significance and values concerning our futures. We may not feel that learning geometric sequences and vectors and probabilities are very fun, or useful to us, but what we do not realize is that they are useful-without us even realizing it.

Firstly, math can lead to good jobs-basic understanding of it is needed in most work areas, including business, engineering, accounting, and many more. Good knowledge of math can help us to understand everything from economics to politics to scientific formulas. Math helps us to date when things happened, like wars, and important political decisions, and scientific discoveries.

We can use the example of probability to show how math is vital to us. Probability is an aspect of math, that is most connected to us, because it is mostly understanding how to use our common sense. Most of us use the word “probably” often, which means that we are making a mathematical calculation, using probability, about how likely something is or is not going to happen, or be. Probability is also a great help to our justice systems. The judge or/and jury, will most likely be basing their decisions on the probability, according to the amount of evidence there is, of whether someone is guilty or not guilty. Math can also help our justice systems, because it is tied into science. If DNA sampling is used to place a certain person at a scene of crime, then math equations will most likely be used to figure this out. Also, times of crimes can be very important in helping to catch the culprits.

In addition, math is useful because it helps us budget our money. Some children, for example, might get an allowance once a week. By knowing how to multiply, divide, add, subtract, and use probability, they could figure out how much they would have if they saved up for a certain amount of time, or how much they should spend each day, until the next allowance. Being able to budget ones money, and taking into account hidden costs, helps them to become more responsible, and also secure with their money.

Also, math can be used to help organize our time. This is especially regarding students. They need to put time in their schedule for both work and play. This requires a certain amount of organization, as well as math, to figure out what times to fit in homework, meetings, community service, and so on. So, math helps to keep a student organized, which leads the student to excel in their studies. Timetables, of course would also be very useful for people in the working world, and even those who do not work.

In short, math is very useful to us today, even with calculators and other forms of technology; it still comes in handy in a number of ways. Learning math can lead to good jobs, organization, security, and also help with courts and catching criminals. So, it is useful in our lives today, and always will be in the future, even if sometimes we feel like there’s no point in learning it.

In today’s world, small businesses dominate the economy. Out of all the business in the United States, small business accounts for % of it all. For a business to be a small business it must have under 500 employees, be locally owned and operated, dependent on the industry, and one or few owners. These owners receive a high amount of respect from all the employees and co-workers. Most of the time the owners have put forth a great amount of time and money in order for the company to be existent. Also, the owner will have more than just his or her money invested. He will have loans from the bank and also some of the family’s money invested into the business. Therefore, most of the owner’s life is spent running the business and making sure it stays on track. Many entrepreneurs start up a business because of a few advantages they can be their own boss, make a lot of money, they have freedom and flexibility, and do what they love to do. On the flip side, it is a capital risk, long hours, high stress, and fluctuating sales. Therefore, many people start up a business hoping to make a lot of money not knowing all the details it takes to successfully run it. Some factors that cause a business to fail are; poor management, nepotism, taxes, miss-hires, too much overhead, and product to market failure. After taking all of these things into consideration, I went out and interviewed business owners and collected information from all of them. Many of their answers were very similar and some were very different. Throughout the paper I will discuss the owner’s daily practices, the results from their surveys, findings from the internet article, and whether or not the business world has changed since they have been in it and how it affected them.

For my paper I interviewed three business owners or daily managers from three different business fields. First, I interviewed Gary Sims from Sims Insurance Agency. He got involved in the company about 10 years ago when he purchased the company. Next, I interviewed Tom Gallagher from Countrytyme, Inc. He is into real estate where he purchases land and resells it. Last, I interviewed Joshua Garey from Grainger. He is a daily customer service manager. He got started with Grainger through their management trainee program. Throughout the research packets, interviews, and other additional findings certain themes seemed to reappear in many different ways. There were some very significant similarities between the three research surveys. There were two major categories from the first question on the survey that three people I interviewed had very similar answers for their most important. It seemed that money and customers ranked higher than any other aspect on the survey. Specifically, overall growth in revenue seemed to be ranked the highest out of all of them. Next, would be to improve service to their customers. Followed by improve profits margin and increase success in retaining customers. Lastly, improve return on capital rounded up the similarities as most important. With these five answers continually repeating themselves throughout the surveys and answers, then there must be a catch to them. Well it is not to difficult to find the catch between customers and making money. If a company, such as these three, takes to heart what they feel is most important and lives by it then what they want to come true will happen. All three of these businesses are very successful in their own right. Therefore, improving customer service and then increased success in retaining customers, which they feel is very important for their business, helps them meet their financial goals. It is quite obvious why those answers were ranked among the top. If a company improves its customer service and then increases customers the rest will follow, such as growth in revenue, improved profit margin, and improved return on capital.

There also were some similarities between the answers ranking at the bottom of the question on the survey. First, ranking low on the survey was financially viable return on investment in new services and facilities. When I asked them why this was not so important to them as a business, the common answer I received was that their companies were pretty set in what services they offered, therefore they did not view new services as too important. There was an exception to the other part of the question though, investment in new facilities. Tom Gallagher, land buyer, obviously has to reinvest his money into buying new land. Other than that this answer ranked toward the bottom. Also, to go along with the other question, successful introduction of new services and facilities ranked at the bottom. Basically the same idea goes along with this question as it did with the question before. Most of these companies are either limited on what they do or they are satisfied with their services as they are. The next question that ranked at the bottom of the survey was collaboration with other companies in your industry. When I asked them about this they just simply answered that they do not feel any interest in joining or working together with anybody else. Ranking near the bottom of the survey in most of the surveys was improving the relationship with suppliers. Basically, if the relationship between the business and its supplier is manageable and there are no problems then there is no real need to make an effort to improve the relationship between the two of them.

livepaperhelp.com

During each of my interviews there were a few specific questions that I asked each business person. These questions were asked to aim at the daily decisions they make, the practices they go by, what problems they encounter, if the business world has changed since they have been involved, and etc. The first question that I asked them, “What is a typical day for you as an owner or daily manager?” Basically I got the response back that I expected to hear. There was nothing to out of the extraordinary just the basic everyday managerial duties one has as an owner or manager. Everyday tasks include such things as paperwork, dealing with customers, working with employees, checking inventory, and making sure the business runs smoothly and efficiently. All of these things must be done everyday for the business to stay on top of everything that is going on and to continue to make money, which is the bottom line. All of this work seems very time consuming and for the most part it is. One thing the owners mentioned is the fact that they are very busy during the day, but to make sure and save some time for yourself. This also goes along with the internet article I found on BusinessWeek. It simply states that people today are so concerned with making themselves available 4/7/65 to their customers that they have no time for themselves.

The next question I asked them, “What type of practices or guidelines do you work by in your business?” Once again there was a universal answer that I received from the people I talked to. A certain word kept coming up during the conversations with the business people and that word was ethics, the sense of right and wrong. When it comes to ethics some people tend to cringe up and not want to talk about them as if they are evil. Luckily the people I interviewed seemed to follow some type of ethical code when dealing with their business practices. Each of the business people I interviewed had a list of business ethics that all the employees had to go by and follow. They were all a little different based on the company, but the general principle was about the same for all the businesses. Also, the organizational ethics is only one of three branches which lead into the ethical dilemma. There are also personal factors that lead to the decision as well as opportunity. With opportunity a lot of times the reward must be a lot higher than the risk in order for a person to make the decision to do it. When I asked the business people what type of things they would or would not do for success in their business, it still lead back to personal and organizational ethics. If the consequence would hurt them as a person or the company as a whole, then the action was not worth taking. In order for a business to survive in today’s world, the business must be ethical, i.e. Enron. The lifeline of a business is repeat business, therefore if you unethically make a decision that makes a customer mad, the chances of getting them back as a customer are not very good. One advantage of carrying positive ethics that I learned is the reputation of your business, which is very important. Once your business is known for doing something illegal or unethical then that type of reputation will stick for a very long time. After news like that gets out the chances of the business staying in operation are not very good.

The next question I asked them, “What are the biggest problems you have to deal with as an owner or manager?” The number one problem that all business people have to deal with is the customers. No matter whom I talked to whether it was the owners, managers, salespeople, or secretaries they all said that dealing with customers is by far the biggest problem. No matter how hard a business tries there will be times when they mess up an order or whatever for a customer. What the customer does not realize is that they did not do it on purpose. These businesses deal with tons and tons of customers and with even more orders, therefore there are going to be times that the order is not right. The customer never understands that and they are so impatient, which they have the right to be to an extent. When I asked the owners how they deal with the customers they simply responded, “The customer is always right.” Even though % of the time they actually are not, the business still has to treat the customer as if they are right. Like I said earlier, the lifeline of a business is repeat business, meaning it is easier to get existing customers to buy more than to go out and find new customers, so in order to keep the existing customers you must treat them well.

Finally, I asked, “Has the business world changed since you have been in business, if so, how has it affected your business?” For some of them they have not really been in the business long enough to really notice much of a trend. For the others, the biggest change in the business world has been the economy. They mentioned the difference from when they just started back in the 170’s and then in the 10’s was the booming of the economy and all the technology that the business world has today. On the other hand they are starting to see the flip side of the economy. They are starting to get hurt a little bit with the recession and now the war starting. For some of them business is slowing up a little bit, but for others not much has changed. With Tom Gallagher, land buyer/real estate, he can definitely see a change in his business as of lately. Then with Gary Sims, Insurance agent, he has not seen a much of a drop in business. So depending on the type of business one is associated with the business world changes differently for each business.

In conclusion, this research project opened my eyes to a lot of different aspects that a business owner or daily manager has to encounter. A lot of things go into running a small business efficiently. As the owner or manager is it your job to make sure everything gets done the way you want it to. At the end of the day all the responsibilities are left for the owner to handle. No one else is to blame for the lack of revenue generated by a business other than the owner. Therefore, the owner must be able to deal with many different situations that he may have to encounter and solve them.

When Dr. Perez said we all have our own prejudices that we would have to be faced with I did a lot of thinking about what those might be for me. I had a hard time finding racial prejudices inside of me, besides the usual stereotypes, although I can usually identify those before I allow them into my thinking process. I know I still have some prejudices against races or cultures but I have overcome so many hateful ones that I am much more aware of my own and others.

A prejudice that I have not been so aware of is against hs’s. I am embarrassed at some of the hateful things I have said or thought about hs people. Some of these I have overcome in the past couple of years. Such as the belief that hs is different from my sin or the sin of the people I love. I used to think it so absurd that a hs person would believe in God, or claim to be a Christian. How could they? Don’t they know God does not love hs’s? It turns out I was the absurd one. Of course He loves them! I know that God loves everyone but somehow in that stupid little mind of mine, I thought that He had just as much contempt and unloving feelings towards them as I did.

I have seen how foolish that way of thinking was, but it still fights inside of me. My hateful feelings come out sometimes in conversations with people. I do not recognize my stereotypes about hs as quickly as I do about race, and so it comes out in my speech sometimes. I have been reflecting on this only recently because of this class.

It was the most unforgettable chldhood experience I had in my life. It had affected me quite greatly and because of it, I developed a phobia of fire. I was only seven years old then.

Mama, Papa, where are you? I cried out. The raging fire was spreading rapidly and fiercely. I could not withstand the unbearable heat any longer. I was going to faint when someone with strong arms pulled me out of the house.

The ambulance had arrived. I was left without much strength, but was still shouting desperately for my parents. I saw the thirsty tonges of the fire licking the house which I had live in for seven years, trying to swallow it as fast as it possibly could. Heavy black smoke billowed out of the shattered windows. The dust and smoke also created a black and thick layer which blotted out the sunlight. The firemen were trying their best to put out the fire.

Just as I was feeling helpless, I heard my name being called. I turend round and saw my parents! At that point, I suddenly felt the surge of energy as I raced towards them and embraced them tightly. I learnt only later then that they had just been rescued.

The firemen took two and a half hours to extinguish the blaze. Making sure that we were all right, the ambulance and firemen went off and the policemen also cordoned off the area.

We stood transfixed, staring at the burnt house. All that was left was only a blackened ruin with shattered windows. My parents were too shocked to say anything. Their faces were too, gaunt with exhaustion and hopelessness. I knew that the hard worked my parents worked for and put in for the past twelve years were gone, absolutely gone, gone with the fire! Everything was destroyed! And it was just a small fire, a small fire which was started playfully. An utter sense of repentance and sorrow started decending on me. I apologised to my parents, apologised for my playfullness and wildness, but I knew, I was never really forgiven...

“A&P”

By John Updike

John Updike uses the persona of an immature teenage boy to illustrate an ambivalent attitude towards women and the growth into adulthood. This illustration is a common theme among adolescent males in society today. Updike is able to relate this to his readers through a young, growing boy, Sam, who works at an A&P. Updike then tells about an incident in which Sam had been faced with that relates to his adolescent immaturity. When the incident is over, Sam has grown up

Three young girls walk into the A&P, inappropriately dressed in bathing suits. They walk up and down the aisles looking for things, all the while drawing stares. Sam shows off his immature side of an adolescent male through his thoughts and actions. In talking with his fellow cashier, Sam describes the girls in terms of physical appearance, commenting on size, weight, curves, and prettiness. Talks as though they were pieces of meat. He also makes provocative comments to his coworker. As he does this, he also watches the movement of the girls around the store. Sam follows their every move and mentions how he wants them to notice him and come to his register. This is Sam’s first stage of growth, from looking at women as nothing but possession to wanting them to notice him. He is gaining a sense of respect for the girls while developing a desire to be noticed by them.

Sam’s second stage of growth is seen in his actions that take place when the girls approach his register. He barely begins to scan their item before his manager appears and scolds the girls about improper dress in the store. Sam was speechless and motionless the entire time until his manager had finished yelling, at which point he rings up the food and takes the money. Here, Sam is unable to react in front of the girls whom he just labeled inferior a moment ago. In his third transition to adulthood, Sam realizes that he had been looking down on women when he himself could not react in their presence. He decides to defend the girls to his boss after they had already left, hoping that one of them would notice and he would get attention for a heroic act. Sam decided to quit and walk out to make up for his lack of response earlier.

Sam’s final act of growth is in the realization that he had missed out on his chance to show the world that he could be a man. He realizes that his act was in vain and that there will be repercussions in his future. Through these stages of growth, the reader can sense Sam’s and realizations and changes through his many actions, most of which are conflicted with themselves. One moment Sam is judging the girls and treating them as material possession, and then next he wants them to notice him. When he gets that attention that he sought, we will not respond to it, feeling uncomfortable in their presence. Sam goes from treating women as inferior to treating them with respect and a sense of personal need.

In Updike’s tale, “A&P”, the persona of an immature teenage boy is used to illustrate an ambivalent attitude towards women and the growth into adulthood. Sam begins the story with an immature view towards the girls, describing them in inferior and suggestive terms. He then freezes at the chance to interact with them, followed by then chance to save them and stand up for them. Afterwards, Sam is ashamed for having done nothing and in a rash attempt to make things right, he quits his job in protest of his managers conduct. His final stage of growth into adulthood is when he realizes the consequences of his actions and is willing to accept them. He has also learned from this experience. Updike’s use of this teenage persona is indicative to the majority of teenagers in the world today and their development into adulthood. Many young adults will experience some form of transition similar to Sam’s. Updike is able to capture a very typical event and portray it to readers so that they may identify with it or at the very least come to understand this growth into adulthood.

Cheerleading

Audience Analysis

The audience of this paper would be the same audience as the audience for The Diamondback. They are college students at the University of Maryland, both male and female, whose age range from around 18- years old. They are of the upper-middle to high class and can be of any race. In context to sports, the audience values qualities such as the skill level, the amount of physical ability, and the amount of practice involved in the sport. Most of them will know that cheerleaders attempt to entertain crowds and encourage athletes at sporting events. However, the audience is likely to take cheerleading for granted, and not truly appreciate the effort put forth and the athletic abilities of the cheerleaders themselves. The audience has a negative attitude towards cheerleaders because they believe that cheerleading is trivial and silly. They greatly underestimate the skill and physical ability required in cheerleading.

When one hears the term ‘cheerleader’ a picture of a pretty girl in a skirt comes to mind. This girl is usually not too bright and is always very peppy. To most, cheerleading is just a form of entertainment in between plays at a football or basketball game. It really does not involve much physical ability because it is just a bunch of cute girls jumping around for attention. People think of cheerleaders as people who are not athletic enough to play a real sport, and they usually do not give much support to any cheerleaders that they know. Cheerleaders and cheerleading do not get the proper respect and admiration that they deserve. Cheerleaders deserve the same amount of respect given to any other athlete of any other sport because cheerleading is just as physically demanding, requires as much skill, and involves the same amount of practice time as any other sport in the world. By getting a better understanding of the sport and of the cheerleaders themselves, the reader will learn to value both the sport and the cheerleaders.

The first thing people need to do is to lose the air-head, valley-girl, oh-my-god-I-have-a-pimple stereotype of cheerleaders. Cheerleaders are not weak, little girls; in fact, cheerleaders are not only girls at all. There are both female and male cheerleaders. Many schools have co-ed competition cheerleading squads. These squads have from as little as one male cheerleader to the usual amount of around ten, but can have many more. Girls do not just join cheerleading just to become popular or to meet cute boys; a lot of them actually come from strong gymnastic backgrounds. Cheerleaders do not only dance around with pom poms while throwing in the occasional, “Go Team!” or “Come on guys! You can do it!” While cheerleaders do use jumps in their routines, there is also a great deal of stunting involved. ‘Stunting’ is a term used in cheerleading for any toss or pyramid involving two or more people and it always requires a great deal of physical power and skill.

There are two basic types of cheerleading. One type is the competition squad; these are cheerleaders who devote most of their practice time to perfecting a specific routine to be judged at competition. The second type is the spirit squad; these are the cheerleaders that are seen at sporting events. Competition squads choreograph a combination of cheers, dances, stunts, and jumps into a -4 minute (the length of a song) routine. The squad practices this routine and then takes it to competition against other cheerleaders. The spirit squad cheers for sporting events only. They stunt, jump, cheer, and dance as well, but they have no real routine planned out. From now on the use of the terms ‘cheerleader’ or ‘cheerleading’ in this paper refers to competition cheerleaders or cheerleading.

Cheerleading, although it might not seem like it, is a lot like football. Both cheerleading and football are sports that require a lot of strength. In football strength is a crucial factor in the game. Players spend hours in the gym lifting weights trying to get stronger so that they will be able to hit harder and take harder hits. Likewise, cheerleaders also have to have a great deal of strength in order to do many of the more complicated stunts. In some stunts cheerleaders may launch one of their own around 0 feet in the air. These stunts require precise timing and require enormous amounts of skill and concentration. The slightest mistake could prove to be disastrous. Where in football, players have to memorize different plays and different formations, cheerleaders have to memorize entire routines. Think of each routine as being an offensive drive in football; cheerleaders have to know exactly where they are going and the route that they take to get there. They also have to know what formations to get into for their different stunts, just like football players have to know the formations or their different plays. Many consider football one of the most dangerous team sports around, but what is often over-looked is the danger in cheerleading. Football is a violent sport and people get injured often. Cheerleading proves to match or even surpass the danger involved in football when a flyer (usually one of the lightest members on the squad who is tossed into the air and the one used in the stunts) is thrown around 0 feet in the air with no pads or safety line to protect her.

Think of cheerleading as a movie. One watches both a movie and a cheerleading routine in the same fashion. When viewing a performance, the audience is usually entertained and pleased, but very little thought is given to how much work was put into the performance. A movie often takes months if not years to complete. There are hours and hours of footage, yet the audience only sees about two hours worth of film. Similarly, practicing a routine for a cheerleading competition takes months and the final piece is only a -4 minute long exhibition. Cheerleading requires hours on top of hours of hard work and practice. Very important, and yet almost always overlooked are the angles and positioning of cameras in films. A great deal of thought is put into exactly where that camera goes to get the directors message across to the audience. The same effort is put into how a cheerleading routine is choreographed for the judges and audience at a competition so that they get the best view of every stunt.

Cheerleading, like football or basketball, is a powerful sport. The people who participate in it - cheerleaders - possess phenomenal physical ability and admirable character traits; they are hard-working, dedicated, and skillful. Just like in any other sport, there is no specific type of cheerleader. Cheerleaders are diverse, which makes cheerleading an entertaining sport because there is always something new to see and appreciate. The sport of cheerleading and the athletes themselves deserve the same amount of credit and acclaim given to any other sport or athlete. It is about time people stopped looking down on the sport of cheerleading and the cheerleaders themselves and started looking at them for what they are worth.

Many people believe that children are more easily influenced by different ideas and stereotypes at a young age. Veronica Chambers and Scott Russell Sanders are two people with such beliefs. Chambers wrote about how she believed that because the Cinderella story was portrayed completely by whites that young children of different races would believe they couldn’t become princes or princesses. Sanders wrote about how growing up around different classes of people changed his views of how their lives are. His idea of the average man was someone who worked in coalmines and basically worked himself to death. I disagree with these authors’ ideas. I do believe children are somewhat influenced by what they are exposed to as they are growing up. But I also think that now children are exposed to so many different cultures and classes that they are not as easily influenced by any one of them.

Sanders described the working class men that he remembers from his childhood. He was only exposed to the lower class men who had to work themselves to death to survive. Sanders believes women have a harder life because they have so many paths to choose from in life. He noticed later in life that these views changed between different social classes. His fiend Anneke told him that she thought men had a harder life because they were eaten up with guilt. I believe that this is rarely the case now. Children are exposed to many different classes of people threw the Internet and television. I think children now have a better understanding of different classes.

Chambers believed that the Cinderella story was politically incorrect by having only whites in the play. Chambers believed that other races of girls and boys would feel they could not be princesses or princes because the characters in the plays and movies were not the same race. I think this is absolutely ridiculous. I think children are mostly unaware of the difference of race. The only reason children discriminate themselves from the characters in Cinderella is because of the beliefs their parents raised them with. No one is born believing they are different from anyone else.

With modern technology children are exposed to many different things. They associate themselves with different classes of people and different races without thinking twice. Many white children have grown up watching the Cosby show.
