Whenever I think of the classes which I took in my undergraduate engineering education, there is one class which always almost jumps into my mind - ME 588 - Design and Manufacturing in Industries. The second reason is the nature of this particular class. This class was different from all other classes. The class was held only once a week, on Fridays. The interesting thing was that the class was out of the classroom! Every Friday, we had to visit one local industry and that was it. Though not a very good industrial town, Albuquerque has quite a good number of industries. During the semester, we visited many industries such as Intel Corporation, GE, Albuquerque publishing company, American Gypsum, Elastimold and so many. The class was very practical and I got a very good exposure to different manufacturing processes. There was tremendous variety in manufacturing operations in different companies. I got knowledge about job-order manufacturing, batch manufacturing and continuous manufacturing processes.
