In the 50s it was a wonderful time to be a child. Born after the war and brought up in an age of wealth, most boys and girls enjoyed the 150s to the fullest. Especially in the new suburban neighborhoods filled with young families, the sounds of playing children filled the air. Girls for the most part loved jacks, hopscotch, and jumping rope to the little chants of "Teddy bear, teddy bear," or "Icka backa, soda cracker." Boys played cowboys and Indians, or transformed themselves into space men who fought in fierce space battles. For parents who had grown up in the Great Depression years, even the noisiest fun was sweet music to their ears.

Baby Boom

Baby boomers are those born between 146 and 164. Which means in this year of 00 baby boomers are from the ages of and 57. There are about 76 million boomers in the United States. This is % of the United States population. In Canada Baby Boomers are known as Boomies (there are 6 million baby boomers there.) The term is used to define the boom in births after World War II. The 160s is the decade that defined the boomers. The music, events, and the social changes made a permanent impression on us. There were so many changes in the boomer decades that how old you were during the decades greatly affected how you turned out.

The SuburbsWrite my Essay on The 50s cheap

Levittown was the first suburb to be built and was built in the 50s decade. Levittown was built by William Levitt using the most up-to-date building methods. Levittown was originally called Island Trees. It offered affordable housing to returning GIs and their families, in the form of small, single-family houses. From the start, Levittown appeared as much a creation from a dream as one made of wood and plaster (brick clay). William Levitt was a master publicist, and he understood that to make his community work, he needed to make it look like a new American Life. To do this, Levitt did more than make cookie-cutter homes off the parkways leading from New York City. The accusations against Levittown from the first focused on the cramped areas in the inside, and the unfinished quality of its landscape. The critics were judging from an older, more powerful point of view. Theirs was a suburb devoted to upper-middle-class conservatism. Levittowners, however, understood their new houses compared to the ones they were leaving which were multi-unit brick, stone or frame apartment complexes. The nature of Levittown as a community was a major attraction. William Levitt understood that his suburban area was too big to work as a neighborhood and so he built it as a new form of an American community, and a longer cluster of neighborhoods with village centers to hold them together. His Levittown wasnt so very different from the plan of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, designed during the war by the architectural firm of Skidmore, Owings, Merrill, a community itself made in part after the TVA communities of the Depression-era utopian Roosevelt planners. Over time Levittown came in to being.

50s Prosperity

In the 50s there was a population of 151,684,000 people in America and ,88,000 were unemployed. The average salary was $,. Things turned around after the Great Depression mostly because there was the high level of economic prosperity enjoyed by many Americans during this time. A housing boom, increasing numbers of bought goods, little unemployment, public funding and large projects, and advances in technology created strong economic growth. The standard of living rose rapidly during the 150s. The gap between the rich and the poor actually increased during the postwar years, but in many ways the country seemed to be overflowing with abundance, especially compared to the non productive wartime years and the Great Depression of the 10s. The 150s saw the circulation of an amount of consumer goods that had not been experienced before and the advancement of the modern advertising industries and marketing technologies (which was closely linked to the development of television). This is not to say that the people of postwar America were especially greedy or more materialistic than previous generations. But they were far more likely to be able to afford manufactured goods (like appliances and processed foods) and to have a wide selection of manufactured goods from which to choose. People in every part of the country were crazy about the hula hoop or were dipping potato chips into a mixture of sour cream and freeze-dried French onion soup. And this trend did not pass uncriticized. Writers like Updike, social critics, and artists expressed grief for the rise of consumer culture and the reign of the product.

Air Travel

On May , 15 British Overseas Airways Corporation began the worlds first commercial jetliner service with the de Havilland DH 106 Comet 1. The 6-seat passenger jet flew from London, England to Johannesburg, South Africa, at speeds up to 500 miles per hour. Airlines around the world quickly beat a path to de Havillands door. On January 10, 154 a de Havilland Comet departing from Rome plunged into the ocean killing all passengers and six crew members. Three months later, another Comet bursted apart in flight. An exhaustive investigation revealed the Comets fatal weakness which was metal fatigue. On June 0, 156 a TWA Super constellation and a United Airlines DC-7 collided 1,000 feet over the Grand Canyon, killing all 18 people aboard both planes. This disaster, the worst in U.S. history up to that point, led to new safety measures and the establishment of the Federal Aviation Agency. On October 4, 158 the newly redesigned Comet 4 premiered with service between London and New York. De Havillands new jet, though, can only accommodate 67 passengers, while the forthcoming Boeing 707 could seat 111. Britain lost its dominance in commercial aviation to the Americans. On October 6, 158 Boeings first jetliner, the 707, makes its class flight for Pan Am, traveling from New York to Paris with 111 passengers. Boeing took the lead in manufacturing passenger jets as commercial airlines discovered that jets are more reliable and profitable than piston-driven planes. On March 1, 15 French aircraft manufacturer, Sud Aviation, delivers the Caravelle to Air France. Innovative in its design, the Caravelle is the first commercial jetliner to have its two jet engine positioned at the rear of the aircraft. On September 18, 15 Douglas Aircraft entered the jet manufacturing competition with its first jetliner, the DC-8, which begun commercial service for both United Airlines and Delta Air Lines.

Jet Aircrafts

Up until the 50s, air travelers flew in piston-driven stratocruisers. While they had a certain amount of charm, the flights were extremely long, noisy & turbulent. Jetliners, which were developed during World War II, could make the trip in half the time and carry twice as many passengers.

Two events in the 50s signaled the beginning of the jet age....the maiden flight of Britains Comet in 15, and the launch of Boeings 707 in 158. Airplanes became the preferred method of long-distance travel, surpassing both trains and ocean liner.

A. Corporate Mission

Kacey Furniture's Mission was to maintain their current position (being fourth in the furniture industry) as a full-line retailer with its flagship store in the city of Denver.

Kacey's objectives

• Being the one of the only ones that offers a full range of products (i.e. being a one stop shop) Help with essay on kacey fine furniture: mission and external factors • Maintain their core competencies (fashion, service and high customer satisfaction) and sustained competitive advantages by being the smallest of the big players.

• Take advantage of the available alternative distribution outlets to give a fashion focused, value oriented products.

• Maintain their specific appeal in terms of financial transaction or greater service after the sale.

• Maintain their corporate culture as being a family focused company.

• Maintain the sales levels, sales commissions and bonuses by motivating employees to initiate changes or take on new responsibilities.

• Keep the employees energy level high and make sure that all their employees share the same vision to achieve same goals.

B. Corporate Governance

Kacey Fine Furniture was started by Jack Barton in 150 in Denver. His wife Shirley joined the store in 166 and later Jack and Shirley passed on to their oldest daughter Leslie who is currently the vice president of the company. Leslie's managerial and design skills and her husband Sam's marketing skills transformed Kacey from a small family business to a major player in Denver's growing furniture market.

C. Top Management

As the current vice president of kacey, Leslie encourages employees to work as a team to achieve the company's targets. Kacey's management values employees opinions and suggestions. As an inspirational motivator, Leslie didn't want to be too tough on employees.

Kacey Fine Furniture had had a "family focus" since its inception. It was still oriented toward families and community involvement. Kacey not only allow nepotism, they promote it.

At Kacey, managers took on the role of coaches and trainers instead of schedulers and disciplinarians. Management policy was to motivate employees to have a great degree of participation, involvement, and continuing education.

II. External Environment

A. General Environment

Denver, "boom-or-bust town, was the fastestgrowing furniture market in the U.S. in 1, and new housing starts promised continued increases over the next several years. However slowly more people started moving into the suburbs and therefore business started declining. Furthermore, the area where the store was located became more industrialized with restaurants, brew-pubs, aquariums, basket ball stadium, amusement park and more. Also it was out of the way for customers who went furniture shopping.

B. Industry Environment

Denver is considered one of the most competitive retail furniture environments in the country. There were over 50 retail furniture stores in the greater Denver metropolitan area in 15 serving a population of about two million people. Also in competition with Kacey were the more than 50 establishments that sold used furniture, as well as the many stores that competed in specialty or accessory goods, such as electronics, carpet & floor coverings, art work and knickknacks.

The Denver furniture market was dominated by four full-line independent merchandisers American Furniture Warehouse, Weberg Furniture, Homestead house, and Kacey Fine Furniture. Each of the stores has to apply different strategies in order to survive the competition.

C. Summary of External forces

According to me, the change in the general environment is the cause for the sales decline. The movement of people from the downtown area to the suburbs has become the major cause for the industrialization, which has further lead to insufficient parking space, traffic and finally a n absolute, unqualified disaster to the furniture shopping.

When most people look at the floor they see matching pair of shoes after matching pair of shoes. On the whole, both shoes of a pair seem to be the same. Yet, on a closer look Im sure that no two shoes are exactly alike. My two skate shoes may seem to be the same at first glance, but they are very different to me.

The way in which my shoes are similar is very obvious. First off, I ware both of them on my feet so they can get me to where I need to go. They provide me with warmth and protection to the dangerous outside ground. The way in which they are attached to my feet is exactly the same. Both are tied down to my feet with strong and sturdy laces tied in a double knot. At a glance the appearances of both seem to be identical. My shoes are colored gray with hints of red through out. Both are the size of 11 ½. The markings that the leave behind in the mud, snow, and dirt are the same crisscross patterns. Also my shoes are branded with the same exact Vans logo on the inside and outside. Lastly, they both let out the same foul smell from the soles. Even with all these similarities, there are many, if not more differences between the two.

Some differences between my shoes are very clear, yet others could only be picked up by their owner. The most obvious difference is that one shoe is designed to fit my right foot, while the other is made to fit my left. Next my shoes are worn in different places along the sides and front because of the fact that I use them to skateboard. My left shoe is worn at the front from dragging my toe up to ollie. Whereas, my right shoe is worn more along the bottom from pushing along the ground to get me going. Also my right shoe has pen drawn along the instep, but the other does not. Although both have stitching that is coming undone, my left shoe has a much bigger problem with falling apart. Lastly, the insole of my right shoe has a hole under my big toe again from pushing my skateboard along. Even though my left insole is worn in relatively the same place, it has not yet become a hole.

It would seem to most that any pair of shoes would be identical. Yet in any pair there has to exist some differences. My two shoes may look very similar to an untrained eye, but if you take a closer look you can tell just how different they are. This just proves that no matter how similar tow things may be, there are no two things that are exactly alike.Order Custom Take a Walk with Me paper

In the book Sula by Toni Morrison, as young girls Nel Wright and Sula Peace are the same age, same race, and from the same town. They are best friends. Nel and Sula grew up together in the town of Medallion, getting into trouble together, meeting boys together, and just having fun though they are looked upon as opposites. However, that all stops when Sula leaves Medallion one day and doesn't return for nearly a decade. When she did finally return, that is when the true differences between Sula and Nel were shown in reality.

As children Sula and Nel were very different. Nel Wright is opposite in many respects to Sula. Physically she is light colored and plain. She is thought to be a good girl by her mother and everyone else in The Bottom for she is quiet and obedient. Her family is very respectable, staid, and proper and Nel is brought up to be the same way. Then one day, after meeting her prostitute grandmother, Nel realized the reasoning for her mother's prim and proper behavior was her effort to wipe out her past. Nel decided that she would be different from her mother. During this time, when Nel is searching for individuality, she became best friends with Sula, who is independent, brave, and strong. Sula is a dark character, emotionally defined by a sense of evil and physically defined by her black coloring, as well as the darkening birth mark in the shape of a rose that adorned her eye. She is very strange, mysterious, somewhat defiant, and definitely different from those around her. Sula lives in a house with her grandmother, Evan, her mother, Hannah (who is the town slut) and several boarders, including a white alcoholic named Tar Baby and three young boys all named "Dewey". Since her house is very crazy at times and not much attention is given to her, Sula enjoys spending time with her best friends, Nel. The two of them become inseparable, even though they are totally different in background and personality.

Since Sula and Nel are best friends, they went through a lot together, some good occurrences and some bad. One day, Sula and Nel were playing with a little boy named Chicken Little, down by the river. Sula is holding by his hands and swinging him around and around. Then she loses here grip and the young boy falls in the water and never comes up. Not knowing where to turn, Sula goes to Shadrack's cabin for help.

He nodded his head as though answering a question, and said, in a pleasant conversational

tone, a tone of cooled butter "always." (6)

Sula, for years interprets, as a threat as in he will always know. She runs back to Nel and the two decide not to tell anyone what has happened. Nel assures Sula that it was just an accident, but Sula feels terrible and guilty during Chicken Little's funeral, the two girls are numb and silent. Sula has been changed forever. Many years later, the girls grow up and mature. Though they never forget about Chicken Little they do, however, move on with their lives. In order to gain respectability and acceptance in the community, Nel decides to marry and settle down. The decision delights her mother, for she wants Nel to be just like her. For Nel, her husband, Jude, becomes a poor substitute for Sula, who feels abandoned by the marriage. However, Sula is very active in the wedding arrangements and stands up with Nel at the altar. As the evening wears on,

Nel saw through the open door a slim figure in blue, gliding, with just a hint of strut, down the path toward the road. One had was pressed to the head to hold down the large hat against the warm June breeze. Even from the rear Nel could that it was Sula and that she was smiling; that something deep down in the litheness was amused. It would be ten years before they saw each other again, and their meeting would be thick with birds. (85)

After Sula's departure, the friendship between Sula and Nel would never be the same again.

After Sula's ten-year absence, she returns to The Bottom very different through society 's eyes than before. She comes home dressed like a movie star and reveals that she has been to college. The people in Medallion, who have always found Sula to be strange, now feel totally alienated from her. Her difference makes her unacceptable as a result, every bad thing that happens in the town is blamed on her, especially after she puts her grandmother, Eva, in a nursing home. However, Nel does not notice any changes about Sula and is very excited for her return. Since she has suffered from lack of friendship, is eager to befriend Sula, in spite of the opinion of the town about her. They become close friends again, up until Nel finds Sula in bed with her husband, Jude. Out of shame, Jude leaves Nel and their three children. Not only does she lose her husband, but her best friend also. Nel is truly devastated and she goes through of her life believing that she mourns the loss of her husband, when the truth it is Sula that she misses. Yet she is too proud and proper to approach Sula until she hears that she is dying. Nel forces herself to visit her friend out of sense of duty and her own "goodness". The visit soon degenerates into an argument when Sula explains her vision of life and Nel questions it. Nel wants to know why Sula took Jude from her. And Sula responds back

"What you mean take him away? I didn't kill him, I just fucked him. If we were such good friends, how come you couldn't get over it?" (145)

Then Sula warns Nel not to be so sure of her own moral superiority. Nel leaves feeling angry, but unable to forget Sula's warning. Shortly after Nel's visit, Sula descends into pain and dies, with her last thought being "well I'll be damned, it didn't even hurt. Wait'll I tell Nel. (14)

Throughout their whole lives and friendship Sula was considered to be evil and Nel the Angel by the community. However, after the Sula's death and after visiting Sula's grandmother, Nel comes to realization that she is not such a good person either. What Sula told her on her deathbed was true. In the end, Nel acknowledges that she has an evil heart and that Sula had truly been her best friend and a good person. Sula was not really the evil one; instead, it is she herself that is evil- hard-hearted and accusing; she even admits to herself that she delighted in Chicken Little's death, while Sula was horrified. Nel suddenly knows that her friendship with Sula was the best thing she has ever had, stronger than motherhood and marriage. She sees that all Sula's evil deeds have been a result of her friend believing she had no other fate. Nel is truly filled with sorrow over the way that she allowed both her and Sula's lives to progress, each believing one thing about themselves when the other was true.

The outcome of this book was that both woman had still been opposite from each other, as they were when they were young. However, the unique combination of the two woman, who were completely complement, formed a friendship that supercede everything else in their lives until the day they both died.

His Life and Legacy On November , 16, while being driven through the streets of Dallas, Texas, in his open car, President John F. Kennedy was shot dead, allegedly by the lone gunman, Lee Harvey Oswald. John Fitzgerald Kennedy was the 5th President of the United States, the youngest person ever to be elected President, the first Roman Catholic and the first to be born in the 0th century. Kennedy was assassinated before he completed his third year as President therefore his achievements were limited. Nevertheless, his influence was worldwide, and his handling of the Cuban Missile Crisis may have prevented the United States from entering into another world war. The world had not only lost a common man, but a great leader of men. From his heroic actions in World War II to his presidency, making the decisions to avert possible nuclear conflict with world superpowers, greatness can be seen. Kennedy also found the time to author several best-selling novels from his experiences. His symbolic figure represented all the charm, vigor and optimism of youth as he led a nation into a new era of prosperity. From his birth into the powerful and influential Kennedy clan, much was to be expected of him. Kennedy was born on May ,117 in Brookline, Massachusetts. His father, Joe, Sr., was a successful businessman with many political connections. Appointed by President Roosevelt, Joe, Sr., was given the chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission and later the prestigious position of United States ambassador to Great Britain (Anderson 8). His mother, Rose, was a loving housewife and took young John on frequent trips around historic Boston learning about American Revolutionary history. Both parents impressed on their children that their country had been good to the Kennedys. Performing some service for the country must return whatever benefits the family received from the country they were told. (Anderson 1). The Kennedy clan included Joe, Jr., Bobby, Ted and their sisters, Eunice, Jean, Patricia, Rosemary, and Kathleen. Joe, Jr., was a significant figure in young Johns life as he was the figure for most of Johns admiration. His older brother was much bigger and stronger than John and took it upon himself to be Johns coach and protector. Johns childhood was full of sports, fun and activity. This all ended when John grew old enough to leave for school. At the age of thirteen, John left home to attend an away school for the first time. Canterbury School, a boarding school in New Milford, Connecticut and Choate Preparatory in Wallingford, Connecticut completed his elementary education (JFK 8). John graduated in 14 and was promised a trip to London as a graduation gift. Soon after, John became ill with jaundice and would have to go to the hospital. He spent the rest of the summer trying to recover. He was not entirely well when he started Princeton, several weeks later in the fall of 15. Around Christmas the jaundice returned and John had to drop out of school. Before the next school year began, he told his father he wanted to go to Harvard (JFK 8). On campus, young people took interest in politics, social changes, and events in Europe. The United States was pulling out of the Great Depression. Hitlers Nazi Germany followed aggressive territorial expansion in Europe. It was at this time that John first became aware of the vast social and economic differences in the United States. In June 140, John graduated cum laude (with praise or distinction) from Harvard. His thesis earned a magna cum laude (great praise) ( JFK 8). After graduation, John began to send his paper to publishers, and it was accepted on his second try. Wilfrid Funk published it under the title Why England Slept. It became a bestseller. John, at twenty-five, became a literary sensation. In the spring of 141, both John and Joe, Jr., decided to enroll in the armed services. Joe was accepted as a naval air cadet but John was turned down by both the army and navy because of his back trouble and history of illness (JFK 8). After months of training and conditioning, John reapplied and on September 1, John was accepted into the navy as a desk clerk in Washington. He was disgusted and applied for a transfer. In June 141, Kennedy was sent to Naval Officers Training School at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois and then for additional training at the Motor Torpedo Boat Center at Melville, Rhode Island. In late April 14, Lieutenant John F. Kennedy was put in command of a PT 10, a fast, light, attack craft in the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. Kennedy saw action in the form of night patrols and participated in enemy bombings. On August 1, 14, during a routine night patrol, a Japanese destroyer collided in the darkness with Kennedys craft and the PT 10 was sunk. Through superhuman effort, the injured Kennedy heroically swam back and forth rescuing his wounded crew. Two were killed in the crash. The injury had once again aggravated his back. Still, Kennedy pushed on swimming from island to island in the South Pacific hoping for a patrol to come by. The lieutenant had no idea he had been in the water for eight hours. Finally, an island was spotted that could have provided cover from Japanese planes. With no edible plants or water, Kennedy realized that he and the crew must move on. The next day, he once again attempted to search for rescue. After treading water for hours, the lieutenant was forced to admit no patrol boats were coming. He turned back for the island but was swept away by a powerful current. Kennedy collapsed on an island and slept. He recovered enough energy to return to the island and gathered the crew to move to another island in search of food. JFK was now desperate enough to seek help from natives on a Japanese controlled island. After making contact with the natives, Kennedy persuaded the natives to deliver a message written on the back of a coconut shell to allied forces. The coconut fell into the hands of allied scouts and a patrol was sent. The coconut would appear again on the desk of an American President (Anderson 5). The crew of the PT 10 was given a heros welcome when they returned to base, but Kennedy would have none of it. He refused home leave and was given another boat. In constant pain from the back injury, JFK soon contracted malaria, became very ill, and lost twenty-five pounds. He was forced to give up command and was sent home to Chelsea Naval Hospital near Hyannis Port. The lieutenant received the Purple Heart, the Navy and Marine Corps Medal, and a citation from Admiral W. F. Halsey. Johns back failed to recover was an operation was performed on his spine in the summer of 144. During recovery, Kennedy received word that his brother Joe, Jr. had been killed in action. Joe had been eligible for home leave, but had volunteered for a special bombing mission. The bombs had detonated early and Joe and his copilot were caught in the explosion. Kennedy put his feelings onto paper and a second book was published for the family and close friends. He called it As We Remember Joe. The family- particularly JFKs father- had assumed that Joe, Jr. would carry on the family tradition and go into politics. Both of his grandfathers had been active in politics (Anderson 41). Now, suddenly, JFK was the oldest Kennedy of his generation. Kennedys first chance in politics came when Congressman James Curley from the 11th District of Massachusetts decided to retire in 146 (Gadney 4). JFK won his first Congressional seat by a margin of more than two to one. At the age if twenty-nine, JFK was placed on the front page of the New York Times and in Time Magazine. He was often mistaken in Congress as a Senate page or an elevator operator. It was during this time period in which Kennedy met and fell in love with Jacqueline Bouvier. Jackie, as she was known, came from a wealthy Catholic background as prestigious as the Kennedys. She attended Vassar College and the Sorbonne in Paris, France. She spoke French, Italian, and Spanish fluently. They were wed on September 1,15, at St. Marys Catholic Church in Newport, Rhode Island. All seemed well, yet after three two-year terms as a Congressman, Kennedy became frustrated with House rules and customs and decided to run for Senate. In 15, Kennedy ran for Senate against Republican Senator Henry Cabot Lodge. Fifteen years older than Kennedy, Lodge was the incumbent of two terms in the Senate. JFK prevailed in the victory but was soon stricken with Addisons disease during his first year in the Senate and had to operate on a fifty-fifty chance for survival procedure (Gadney 5). While recovering, Kennedy wrote Profiles in Courage, a bestseller on examples of moral courage in the lives of eight senators who risked their careers for a great cause or a belief. Kennedy returned to Senate and participated in the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He was also chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Labor. JFK believed strongly in education, equal job opportunity, and the civil rights movement. His biggest success came in the form of his Labor Reform Bill, which passed by a margin of 0 to 1 in Senate debate. Kennedys first child, Caroline, was born during this time. Due to his enormous success in Congress, the Democratic Party nominated him for the presidential ticket in 160. Lyndon Johnson was chosen as the running mate with Kennedy to secure and build upon the democratic bases in the southern states while the Kennedys sought out the younger voters, the factory workers, and the liberals (Gadney 61). During the Kennedy Administration, a great deal of events was going on. Jackie had given birth to JFK, Jr., while all over the south, the civil rights movement was going in full force with incidents breaking out. Specific attention gathered around a black air force veteran, James Meredith, applied for admission to the University of Mississippi. In Cuba both the Bay of Pigs occurred, in which U.S. supported rebels revolted in a poorly laid out plan of events that fell out beneath them, and the Cuban Missile Crisis in which the Soviet Republic were building missile silos in Cuba, 100 miles away from Florida. The blame for the failure of the operation falls directly in the lap of the Central Intelligence Agency and a young president and his advisors. The fall out from the invasion caused a rise in tension between the two great superpowers and ironically 4 years after the event, the person that the invasion meant to topple, Fidel Castro, is still in power. The Space Race was in full force with both Russia and the U.S. in competition to reach the moon. U.S. involvement in Vietnam was in the latter stages with plans to withdraw after the 164 election. On a trip to Dallas to stir up support for the re-election, the Presidents autos were coming down Elm Street when three shots rang out. The first projectile entered at the base of Kennedys neck and exited through the back of his head. The second bullet hit Texas Governor John Connally. Seconds later there was another shot and the back of the presidents head was torn away. The assassin Lee Harvey Oswald with a mail-order rifle, fired from the Texas School Book Depository (Warren 5). He then promptly and calmly exited the building approximately three minutes after the first shot was fired. He was picked up later at a Texas movie theatre with little resistance. Oswald had recently applied for a passport to Communist Russia, which led to a series of private meetings between Oswald and the Russian Government (Warren 614). Oswald protested his innocence. President Johnson set up what quickly became known as the Warren Commission headed by Chief Justice Warren to find the motive behind the assassination; The Commission finds the lone, depressed, mentally unstable, anti-social nut kills an American president. On the Morning of November , 16 at approximately 15 the presidential motorcade turned right from Houston St. on to Elm St. Their speed was approximately 11 miles per hour. President Kennedy had ordered the Secret Service to ride on the car boards on the car behind him. He made this decision so that the public would be able to see him better and show that he trusted the public. At exactly 10 while Kennedy waved to the crowd a shot fired out. He was hit in his neck, a shot that was fired approximately five seconds after the first struck him in his head and tore a piece of his skull off. Governor Connally who rode in the same car in front of the president sustained wounds on his back, right side of his chest, right wrist and left thigh. Orders were then given for the limousine to speed up to the hospital. President Kennedy was pronounced dead at approximately 100 pm. Now the question remained. What were the reasons for the presidents assassination? The assassination plot could have been organized by one of many factions, such as the Cubans or the Russians, the Mob, someone upset with his civil rights policies, or maybe an inside job by a special agency. The plot was a deep and complex issue that involved many factions. More theories were offered when Oswalds ties to the CIA and his ties to Russian special agencies were exposed. Around October 15, Oswald applied for Russian citizenship. While in Russia he went to the U.S. Embassy in Moscow where he denounced the United States, Praised the Soviet Union, and stated that he wanted to renounce his U.S. citizenship. He also made another very dramatic announcement he stated that he had offered to give the Soviets radar secrets that he had learned in the Marines. He told them ominously that he might know something of special interest, an obvious reference to the U- spy plane which he had observed while in the service (Melanson 1). It was later noted that Oswald was working under an operative program for the CIA and was a double agent against the KGB. After his assignment was completed he was given $45 by the state department to get home. Whatever Oswalds reason for pulling one of the triggers against President Kennedy, it certainly involved a political agenda behind it. Other theories have evolved over time such as the Grassy Knoll theory. Witnesses say that a man in black was present and fired simultaneously with Oswald and doubled considerable connections and plotted revenge. On Nov. 4, 16 as Oswald was being escorted from the city jail, nightclub owner Jack Ruby shot Oswald with a single shot from a Colt .8 revolver. Ruby was arrested and stood trial in Dallas. He was found guilty and was sentenced to hang. He died in jail of cancer, on January ,168. Kennedy was the first President to be born in the twentieth century and was very much a man of his time. He was restless, seeking, with a thirst of knowledge, and he had a feeling of deep commitment, not only to the people of the United States, but also to the peoples of the world. Many of the causes he fought for exist today because of what he did for the rights of minorities, the poor, the very old and the very young. He never took anything for granted and worked for everything he owned. Perhaps Kennedy summed up his life best in his own inaugural speech Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country.

On September 8, 18, Chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Arthur Levitt sounded the call to arms in the financial community. Levitt asked for, immediate and coordinated action… to assure credibility and transparency of financial reporting. Levitt's speech emphasized the importance of clear financial reporting to those gathered at New York University. Reporting which has bowed to the pressures and tricks of earnings management. Levitt specifically addresses five of the most popular tricks used by firms to smooth earnings. Secondly, Levitt outlines an eight part action plan to recover the integrity of financial reporting in the U.S. market place. What are the basic objectives of financial reporting? Generally accepted accounting principles provide information that identifies, measures, and communicates financial information about economic entities to reasonably knowledgeable users. Information that is a source of decision making for a wide array of users, most importantly, by investors and creditors. Investors and creditors who are responsible for effective allocation of capital in our economy. If financial reporting becomes obscure and indecipherable, society loses the benefits of effective capital allocation. Nothing illustrates the importance of transparent information better than the pre-10's era of anything goes accounting. An era that left a chasm of misinformation in the market. A chasm that was a contributing factor to the market collapse of 1 and the years of economic depression. An entire society suffered the repercussions of misinformation. Families, and retirees depend on the credibility of financial reporting for their futures and livelihoods. Levitt describes financial reporting as, a bond between the company and the investor which if damaged can have disastrous, long-lasting consequences. Once again, the bond is being tested. Tested by a financial community fixated on consensus earnings estimates. The pressure to achieve consensus estimates has never been so intense. The market demands consistency and punishes those who come up short. Eric Benhamou, former CEO of COM Corporation, learned this hard lesson over a few short weeks in 16. Benhamou and shareholders lost $7 billion in market value when COM failed to achieve expectations. The pressures are a tangled web of expectations, and conflicts of interest which Levitt describes as almost self-perpetuating. With pressures mounting, the answer from U.S. managers has been earnings management with a mix of managed expectations.

A world full of fear, envy, and pride is boiling in a fragile pot at its breaking point. Ready to set off massive hysteria. These attributes, put to the extreme, can surely mean the end for a civilization no matter how great. A person with these characteristics cannot possibly function, blinded by their envy, hidden by their pride and forgotten by their fear. If one person can be this affected by their problems, can you possibly imagine a village with these symptoms? In Arthur Miller's "The Crucible," envy, fear, and pride are just some of the ingredients displayed in Salem, Massachusetts during the witch-hunt.

Fear was a key factor that helps throw this village off the cliff. Everyone in the village did some sort of act out of fear. The very thought of fear is enough to cause people to do the unthinkable. For example, Abigail drank blood out of the fear of losing John, the man she lusted over. Abigail was blind by her love for John by her obsession that one day she may be the next Goody Proctor. Her fear of being caught caused her to do things that she might not have done if she did not contain fear in her consciences. Abigail's sudden psychotic outburst were not the only ones fuel by fear, the girls also falter by bending to her wishes and following her lead of accusing anyone that stood in her way. Her uncle, Reverend Parris, was another of the numerous victims of fear. Reverend Parris kept significant information from the court to keep his job as a minister and to protect his reputation in the town. He could not afford having his daughter and niece committing unholy acts in his home while holding such high authority in the town. Parris was a spineless coward that let silence take over his righteousness. Names were blurted out in the courtroom because of the fear of being hanged. Fear won the battle between evil and good in Salem.

Another trait of character that spells doom in bold letters is envy. Envy brings jealousy and jealousy brings hate. Envy was the quality that everyone but a few in the village suffered from. Mrs. Putnam had great envy towards Rebecca Nurse because she had many children and numerous grandchildren where as Mrs. Putnam only had one child, Betty. Mrs. Putnam's envy and jealousy towards Rebecca was so great that it turned to loathe. Her envy drove her to accuse Rebecca Nurse of been a witch. Mrs. Putnam's envy made her crazy, driving her to the point of accusing someone so innocent as Rebecca. Abigail, our top villain, had a bad attribute of envy. She had a strong passion of envy towards Elizabeth Proctor, John Proctor's wife, she could not stand that Elizabeth has John's love. Abigail's envy caused her start this whole madness in the village. Abigail went through long lengths to get John to think of her softly, but John did not give in to her. Abigail was a psychotic girl who was a hazard to herself and the people around her. Envy creates jealousy, jealousy fuels hatred, hatred made these people condemn the innocent. Envy is a quality that played a big role in the village's hysterical reaction to witchcraft.

Pride plays another huge part in the story. Some of Salem's most respected people were accused of witchcraft. Many of those that were accused decided to keep their pride by not confessing and by tying their names to lies. They were too proud to admit to a lie, so their pride cost them their lives. John Proctor, Giles Corey, Goody Osburn, Rebecca Nurse, and many others were put to death for their silence and refusal to declare a lie. Giles Corey was a great example of pride. Instead of turning on a friend and putting him at risk, he decided to put his life on the line. He said nothing to the court officials and so they put him death along with his pride. Another great example of pride is John Proctor and his confession. All he needed to do is sign his name and he was a free man, but John took the road less travel and stuck to his morals. He would rather die than be stripped of his pride, which was his name. The name that had more pride than those than confessed.

Fear, envy, and pride were only some of the elements used to set a small town, like Salem, into a total self-destruction mode as demonstrated in "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller. I hope we learn from this tragedy and that we prevent from history getting to repeat itself.

Network Defense and Countermeasures

My goal is to provide an evaluation of the second class in the New Horizons Security Certified Program. This evaluation is a personal opinion and does not express the opinion of the State of Michigan or the Information Security Cortsoidum or any persons holding a CISSP.

This portion of the New Horizons class was well spread out. The first lesson was Network Defense Fundamentals. Authorization, availability, authentication, confidentiality, and integrity were defined and discussed as the five major key issues in network defense.

Layered defenses were examined as the best defensive strategy. When we talk about strategies, it is always good to use a well-known analogy so the students can relate. This portion of the course uses the castle analogy to discuss the various layers of security. Basic definitions included training and awareness, perimeter security, intrusion detection, non-repudiation, and attack responses.Buy cheap Network Defense and Countermeasures term paper

The active defense-in depth defense was introduced and discussed in detail. This defense strategy stresses the use of multiple, overlapping protection approaches to ensure that failure or by-pass of any individual protection approach will not leave the system unprotected. The defense technologies involved in a layered defense include routers, firewalls, intrusion detection, and access control methods.

The audition process was briefly discussed. This topic could have been more in-depth. The security professional should know how to read logs. They should know that although most people don't log all in coming and outgoing packets, they should. It is much harder to recreate a breach without logs. If the argument for not logging is due to the storage of data, organizations should weigh the risk between spending money to store this logged data or spending money to repair damage of a DDoS or worst yet a blended virus like Code Red. You need to know who is attempting to get into your system.

The second lesson, Designing Firewall systems were very thorough. What firewalls can and cannot do were discussed. A review was given into the different types of firewalls (packet filters, proxy servers). Where firewalls should be implemented was discussed. This took into account whether one was using a screened host; multi honed host, single packet filtering device, or a demilitarized zone.

Developing policies were stressed. Defining firewall policy was discussed along with various items that should be included in the security policy. The most common were the acceptable use statement, the network connection statement, the contracted worker statement, and the firewall administrator statement.

Although these were only examples, the security professional should become more educated on these and other policies. The introduction of wireless technologies has made developing policy a must in all organizations. They should also be aware that just having policies does not stop unauthorized behavior. Along with policy you must have some kind of enforcement mechanism in place.

Lesson , Configuring Firewalls included hands on implementation of Checkpoint's Firewall-1. The definition and the use of stateful packet inspection were given along with in-depth dissuasion of installing and configuring Checkpoint's VPN/1 Firewall-1.

Microsoft ISA Server was introduced and hands-on practice with creating policy and configuring rule sets were given. The Linux ability to bound together rules into IP chains was a concept that was new to me and was very interesting. We also had hands-on practice with creating these rules and following the flow of these rules by creating users and structuring rule management.

In Lesson 4 the objective was to implement a virtual private network and to examine the issues of the VPN and firewall architecture and VPN authentication. The discussions began with what the business driver was for a VPN, one being remote access and two being extranets. Advantages and disadvantages were covered for Remote Access but not for the Extranet. I would have liked the instructor to warn the future Security Professionals about the vulnerabilities of extranets. They need to know that your security is only as good as your connection to other networks, and once you are connected you need an agreement to make sure the other guy is secure.

A review was given into the types of VPN solutions, along with an in-depth review of IPSec, firewall related RFC's, firewall vendors, and Windows 000 VPN installation.

Lesson 5 included a much-needed refresher course on Intrusion Detection systems. Students were instructed on data collection and data analysis. We were taught the difference between Host-based and Network-based designs. We were also taught how to read the data collected through signature and satistical analysis.

Lesson 6 continued with configuring an IDS system. This was the most informative of all the lessons. Here we got a chance to use some tools that most of us (who work in state government) are not allowed to use. We installed snort and configured it to be an IDS by creating a simple rule set. We practiced with the command line version of Snort and the IDS GUI environment.

Lesson 7 continued with analyzing intrusion signatures. We discussed the normal and abnormal signatures along with common vulnerabilities, exploits and denial of service attacks. Snort logs were very helpful in viewing these types of attacks and exploits.

Lesson 8 gave us deep insight into the fundamentals of performing a risk analysis along with predicting, quantifying and mitigating risk. Knowing the overview of your organization, and network was also stressed. The risk analysis process was defined and the five stages (inventory, threat assessment, vulnerability list, evaluation of control, management, and monitoring) of the process were discussed.

On a going forward basis, continual risk analysis was discussed. The need to develop a total, continuous risk assessment process was stressed.

In Lesson we examined the concept of security policies design, enforcement, and monitoring. Policy standards and templates were explored. Specific procedures for incident handling were explored. This section was very informative. We not only learned the difference between the CSO, Chief Security Officer, CTO, Chief Technical Officer and the SA, Security Analyst; we also learned what the areas of responsibility were for each.

This was a very informative class and I would give it a personal recommendation to anyone interested in learning about network defense and countermeasures. The content of the instruction along with the hands-on practice with the tools that were included presents a very detailed road map for learning. The case study of the attacks on GRC was a great insight into hackers and their methods.

In the film, American Beauty directed by Sam Mendes, two sequences that were of significance were the opening and closing scenes. The opening scene is important as it foreshadows how the main characters will develop throughout the film. In the closing scene, the full development of characters is seen, and this development is highlighted through important events in the closing scene.

In the opening sequence the main characters foreshadow how they will develop throughout the film. One way in where this foreshadowing is seen is when the main character Ricky asks Jane if she wants her father (Lester) dead, "Do you want me to kill him for you" this then inevitably foreshadows the death of Lester. Another way in which foreshadowing is used is when Lester's voice-over is heard when he talks about Carolyn (his wife). Lester through the help of an establishing shot of his 'perfect' neighbourhood portrays his wife as an in control and demanding for per section, "Notice how her gardening gloves match the handles of her secateurs that's is not an accident". This helps in setting up the so-called allusion of suburban bliss and foreshadows that it is not all what it seems to be.

During the opening scene the main character Lester is introduced. Lester is seen as bored and stuck in modern suburbia neurosis. One way this is shown is when the camera pans horizontally and we are shown Lester's daily routine of putting his slippers on to having a shower. This sets up the mundane nature of Lester's daily routine, and when he says, "It's all down hill from here" This highlights that Lester has hit a mid-life crisis and because of this he finds life utterly boring. Lester's crisis is formed by trying to keep up with society and consumerism, this caused Lester to find himself in a rut with life, which led to lack of personal fulfilment. Therefore Lester's mid-life crisis is important as it shows the imperfections of American suburbia.

Write my Essay on American Beauty - Scene Comparing for me

The closing scene shows the result of character development, as modern suburbia stresses are shown for what they really are. Carolyn has developed out of the 'perfect American' homemaker seen at the start; she is now no longer smiling. The development of her character is first seen when she is seen crying and listening to her self-motivation tapes, "You can do it!" as a result she is now seen as an un-stable neurotic person. Another character resulting in development is Lester, through Carolyn; Lester's character development is best seen. One ways Lester's development is seen is when juxtaposed with Carolyn; Carolyn who tried her best to conform to society with communism and materialistic values but failed while Lester escape just it. This is seen when Lester quits his job and gets a job at the fast food joint "Mr Smilies", unlike Carolyn, Lester was happy with life.

Another point the closing scene highlights is that 'real' inner beauty in life can be achieved. Through Lester's character development, the audience can see the Lester's death was not in vein. One way this is seen is Lester's transformation from a unexcited office worker, where he was bored with life, to a happy "Mr Smilies" employee. The way in which this beauty with life is seen in the closing scene is when he looks at his family photo, the camera pans across past the red roses and on the white wall. This is effective as it shows that Lester still loves his family very much and that he has truly found inner beauty, as seen when the camera passes the red roses. The red roses are significant to this scene as they symbolise the beauty in Lester's death. Lester's character has therefore developed, and the beauty in his death is highlighted even more when Ricky smiles at Lester's at dead face, and Lester smiles back.

Therefore in the film American Beauty by Sam Mendes, the opening and closing sequences were effective. They were effective as they showed the development of characters through significant events, and through the foreshadowing and highlighting important events and characters.

The primary source that was used to create this paper was the Weight Watchers web site. Because the website is always maintained, this is the most current and up-to-date information available for its members. The information that is maintained in this site is from physicians (in various communities), as well as several people that have used the program for several years. Physicians are consulted any time modifications are made to this program, as well as to monitor the current success of the program. Most of the authors are either certified physicians, or members of Weight Watchers themselves.

The physicians are private practitioners from several communities in the United States. Because one of our team members has been on this program for a year, and the information that we were able to obtain from the web site were from reputable sources, we believe this program is extremely legitimate. Weight Watchers has been in business for more than 0 years, if it was not legitimate, they would not still be in business. Especially due to the fact that over the last several years, unhappy customers have sued companies that have not provided their advertised service, or have endangered their physical health.

Overall, the "diet" (referred to also as a program by Weight Watchers) is great. Many women and men (including famous personalities) have had success with this program. Because a person is able to use food that is found in every supermarket to maintain their point range, it is extremely easy and cost-effective to be on this program. You can buy the food that Weight Watchers sells, or you can make your own food bought at the grocery store. Because of the ease of the program, you can lead a relatively normal life, while still losing weight and feeling better about yourself. You can even go out to dinner, and while on this program and maintain success.

This program has been successful because not only do they provide you with the tools that you need to maintain the food portions, but they also address the psychological aspect of weight management. With the weekly meetings (frequency is determined by each individual participant) and the counselors that are available to answer your questions, Weight Watchers also has the added benefit of moral support that most people need in addition to the food. This program realizes that we are human beings, with needs and challenges, and does whatever they can to assist us with them. Help with essay on Nutrition

Abstract

Moral management is always important in organizations, especially nowadays people are more sensitive to the issue of ethical behavior on both organization level and individual level in workplace. Healthcare today has become an increasingly complex and troubling enterprise for patients, families, healthcare professionals, and society. Moral management of healthcare organization, human treating human anatomically, physically and mentally, is more different and important than other the other common business. A real ethical story that was happened in U of M was presented here that involved some ethical issue on the individual and organizational behavior within the healthcare organization.

Moral management is always important in organizations, especially nowadays people are more sensitive to the issue of ethical behavior on both organization level and individual level in workplace. Healthcare today has become an increasingly complex and troubling enterprise for patients, families, healthcare professionals, and society. Advances in scientific technology and changes in the delivery of healthcare have made it increasingly evident that optimal healthcare requires more than scientific excellence. High quality healthcare also demands attention to ethics, including issues of human values, law, and public policy.

The case I am presenting here is a real ethical story that happened in the University of Michigan.

Dr. Joseph Oesterling was a division head of the Division of Urological Surgery in the University of Michigan in the mid 0¡¯s, and he was a young, energetic and fast rising ¡°star¡± in prostate cancer field in the nation. After his residency and specialist training in the John Hopkins University under the internationally renowned Urologic surgeon Patrick Walsh, he, at the age of only 6, joined and became head of the Urology at the U of M in 1. He worked tirelessly in both treating patients and doing clinical research. He quickly became nationally recognized leading surgeon in the prostate cancer field and editor-in-chief in the international journal Urology (Advisory regarding Dr. Joseph Oesterlings resignation, 00).

He treated his colleagues with warm and personal feeling. Indeed, just as what he claimed, he ¡°works 15 hours a day, seven days a week, and hasn¡¯t taken a vacation in three years¡±. But how can such a promising doctor perform the acts that don¡¯t seem to be ethical? Did he really do anything wrong? What exactly did he do wrong?

One day in 16, a temporary secretary sorting mail for the Urology chief Oesterling opened an envelope and found a $5000 check. Unsure what to do with the check, she gave it to a boss. The check and an accompanying letter from a drug company alarmed the supervisor. The letter also mentioned an earlier $7500 contribution to the National Prostate Research Foundation at the U-M. But the boss soon learned no one at the U-M had heard of the foundation. Where would the money go? The check triggered an eight-month investigation on Dr. Oesterling and what they found was much more than what they could have expected.

They found Oesterling had established three Florida-based foundation/companies, not at the U-M. One of them was the National Prostate Research Foundation Inc. The foundation was Oesterling¡¯s primary company for attracting thousands of dollars in contributions from drug and medical device companies. Most of the money that was intended to contribute to the foundation for prostate cancer research was actually sent to Oesterling¡¯s home. Some of them were never deposited to the foundation¡¯s bank account but instead were cashed by him.

The report of the investigation showed Oesterling did not disclose any of his business contracts with outside companies to U-M, which is required, or fully described them to the American Urological Association, as the association requires when a doctor presents research at conferences. He received hundreds of thousands of dollars from more than a dozen drug companies that he failed to report. Such as in July 16 he deposited $117,144 in his bank account, only $1, of that amount was from a U-M payroll check. Additionally, in several occasions, Oesterling double- and triple-billed to U-M, drug companies and medical device companies, and urological associations for the same trips, cab rides, hotel bills, and other expenses(Kamins, 00).

Oesterling¡¯s research and prescribing practices also were in question because he made thousands of dollars from companies whose products he studied or promoted. For example, Oesterling wrote to pharmacies at U-M and the VA hospital in Ann Arbor to recommend a prostate cancer drug just three days after he received $5,000 to his prostate cancer foundation from the drug manufacturer. Oesterling served as a board director in a medical device company, VidaMed Inc., and received stock options for 10,000 shares while conducting a clinical trial study on two procedures using the device made by the company for treating enlarged prostate glands. The study required that patients be assigned randomly to receive treatment by either this device or the traditional procedures. But Oesterling selected patients in a nonrandom manner that might result a biased outcome in favor of the device. He presented his findings to the American Board of Urology; he praised the new procedure without disclosing his financial interest in the company. He also falsely claimed that none of the 0 patients treated with the device were anesthetized during the procedure, although all had been anesthetized (Kamins, 00).

One side of this issue in the case is the individual ethics. Oesterling obviously behaved unethically in many situations. He knowingly and willingly allowed his clinical researches to be affected by outside force while pretending the researches were still unbiased. He took the matter of serious science that is directly related to human health in a rather indiscreet manner. He turned the serious medical performance into a money game, the money to feed his endless financial desire that is. Although it is very hard to fully understand what¡¯s in the back of his mind and why he did what he did in the double- and triple-billing episode, one thing that could be drawn out from it may be that his extravagant money desire is out of his moral control, or he had already lost it.

Although Dr. Oesterling is already in the leadership position within the division of a large medical school, he is still clearly lacking the basics of right medical ethics knowledge that every medical doctor should have in order to practice in medicine. He should re-learn the values and principles of what is right and what is wrong when treating patients. He should be advised to strengthen his cognition on the special importance on human being when using medical tools on them. He should deeply recognize that patients are not only customers in hospitals, also they are human and the objects they are dealing with are human body, not just a lifeless object, so the abuse of doctors¡¯ power would not only cause damages on them financially, but also may harm them physically, even loss of lives. He should strongly realize the medicine is not just an any kind of sciences; it¡¯s a very unique and serious science. It should be dealt very seriously. He should be taught that to mistreat patients just for increasing his own personal financial interest is absolutely unacceptable, unethical, even illegal, and will face severe consequences. Obviously the unethical acts of Oesterling¡¯s had been investigated by multiple agencies, he would be judged in the court of law and be penalized. After all these are over with satisfied results, Oesterling may be given second chance to practice in medicine under close supervision.

This case not only showed the individual unethical behavior in medical field, also revealed some unethical and immoral management in medical equipment companies and drug manufacturing companies. The higher authority in medical field should send a strong message to the top management team in these companies to ask them to change their organizational behavior to comply with ethical behavior in medicine. These top management teams should go through similar educational classes in ethics as what have been advised for Dr. Oesterling. All top executives as well as group managers in those companies should be taught and become vigilant on that the business they are in is not just an any kind of common business; it is directly related to human health and their product can be very powerful and even harmful if misused. These companies should clearly realize the nature of their products and the nature of the end customers of their products. Any serous offenders or repeat offenders in these businesses should be removed, fined or facing jail term.

¡°Cognitive moral development is referring to an individual¡¯s level of moral judgment with regard to right and wrong. People seem to pass through stages of moral reasoning and judgment as they mature.¡± (Hellriegel, 000, p. 55). In this case, Oesterling showed immaturity in his moral judgment in that his judgment was still very much influenced by outside illegitimate force and still was self-centered, as his behavior was saying ¡°It¡¯s right because it¡¯s right for me¡±. His moral judgment needs to be re-evaluated and his level of cognitive moral development needs to be re-established and pushed higher. As a healthcare provider, this is basic requirement. Without the basic moral development and moral judgment, a performance with ethically justified behavior would be impossible, let alone to deal with the more difficult and complex ethical dilemmas faced by healthcare providers in recent years.

The other side of the ethical issue in this case is about the ethics and decision making in organization. In order to either quickly get their products out on the market or increase the sale of their products, many drug manufacturing companies and medical equipment and device companies would choose to influence doctors or researchers with financial incentives to intentionally prescribe more of their drugs or buy their product over the competitors. Simply speaking, they are buying their way to achieve their goals. By paying money, very often a huge amount of money like in this case, to a leading individual or individuals for a research project on its product, the organization is actually trying to tip the scientific balance leaning toward to its favor. In medical field, how a patient should be treated, or in clinical studies how they are conducted, should strictly be based on the medical science and should not be affected by any other influences and forces. In this field, very likely any business misconduct would not only hurt consumers financially but, more seriously, harm them physically and even lose their lives. This is not only unethical on organizational behavior, but also illegal on business practice. The behavior of the VidaMed Inc. Company as well as other unnamed companies in this case falls into this category.

I believed that healthcare organizations should create or reinforce an ethics monitoring committee to closely monitor staff members in their medical practice, clinical researches and basic medical researches. They should inspect and curb any unethical practice and unethical influences, especially from outside through improper financial grant support or any kind of financial incentives by healthcare product manufacturing companies. A code of ethics may be developed to support the staff in setting ethical goals and making ethical decisions.

Financial incentives in medicine, unfortunately, create a paradox that complicates the ability of health service providers to always make the judgment calls in favor of patients. This kind of immoral management by a company may exist in much wider latitude within drug companies and their distributors. These organizations almost always, either consciously or unconsciously, uses the financial incentives to tilt doctors¡¯ decision-making balance in favor of the business but not necessarily in favor of, sometimes even harmful to, patients. Therefore, the immoral management in medicine related field is not only immoral, but is particularly harmful and dangerous to humanity. ¡°The opposite extreme from immoral management is moral management¡±. ¡°Moral management doesn¡¯t mean lack of interest in profits. However, the moral manager will not pursue profits outside the boundaries of the law and sound ethical principles¡± (Nelson, 1, p. 56). Top executives, managers and employees in these companies should particularly recognize this significance at all time and raise their business moral standard to a higher level. If the immoral management in medicine related companies were allowed to continue, the long-term results of it would be that almost all human population, including those who work in these companies, could be its victims.

Conclusion

Healthcare has it own culture, own dynamics and involves a special passion and concern that makes it both intellectually fascinating and emotionally rewarding. The doctor-patient relationship is held by trust. Trust is one of the primary ethical issues that complicate the doctor-patient scenario. If the healthcare providers don¡¯t hold higher ethical standard, the trust is often challenged by the inevitable asymmetry of the power in the relationship between physicians and individuals seeking care. The sense of responsibility carried by the physician in the doctor-patient relationship is significant, as he or she uses a specialized, learned set of skills to respond to the needs of others. Medicine, inherently, is an altruistic act. Without high ethical standard, however, there won¡¯t be altruism, therefore, there won¡¯t be medicine.

Good ethics have a surprisingly positive effect on organizational activities and results. When organizations pursue system wide ethics, performance improvement and business success should be significant. Moral management of healthcare, human treating human anatomically, physically and mentally, is more different and important than other the other general business. By fulfilling the highly moral obligation of helping others and providing a service, the efficient provision of medical care adds to the moral goodness in the world. The results of such moral actions, in the realm of modern medicine, make the world a better place by fighting against disease and promoting a focus on healthy living.

"Land of the Stupid"

Americans are too trusting. Ludwig Fainberg, one of the most prominent figures in the Russian mob, said so himself. "I love this country! It's so easy to steal here!" (qtd. in Friedman) said Fainberg of the United States. He proved this statement with his lengthy list of felonies committed, including conspiring to distribute cocaine and heroine, buying stolen property, counterfeiting, and money laundering. The United States is undoubtedly an ideal setting for the Mafiya to operate because of the carefree attitudes of Americans and the American government.

To illustrate, many people, such as myself, don't lock their doors. Although this has nothing to do with the enormous problem with the Russian mob, it demonstrates the trusting mentality that many Americans have. I feel safe, I feel as though the majority of the people living in my small town are trustworthy people, and many Americans have this same manner of thinking. In Russia, however, Tarzan says that, "Dishonesty is a trait that is bred in the bone. We live by the eleventh commandment, don't get caught" (qtd. in Friedman). Our government here in the United States concentrates on making our country

the land of the free for people who emigrate here but, in all actuality, many people like Fainberg say that "America is the land of the stupid." These criminals are going to take advantage of our trust; not everyone is as honest as we hope. When Fainberg came to America in the middle of the Cold War, however, Russia was unable to provide adequate criminal background information to U.S. immigration officials; therefore, they could not easily distinguish between the honest and the dishonest. Despite his criminal past, Fainberg had no problem entering the United States, where he was seen as a virtuous person because in America, everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Fainberg however, was not an honest person; he immediately resumed his career in crime.

Our policies here in the United States are too lenient and forgiving towards immigrants. Those who are not used to having freedom and rights may abuse them, and because of that, there is some truth to Ludwig Fainberg's statement, "I love this country! It's so easy to steal here!" Fainberg and criminals like him take advantage of our friendly attitude and policies repeatedly and nothing changes. We let them. In some ways, America really is "the land of the Stupid."
