House of Mirth

Loneliness of a protagonist seems to be the prevalent theme throughout Edith Whartons novel, The House of Mirth. The following passage relates to the theme of loneliness and dramatizes Lily Barts dilemma of poverty All she looked on was the same and yet changed. There was a great gulf fixed between today and yesterday. Everything in the past seemed simple, natural, full of daylight-and she was alone in a place of darkness and pollution.-Alone! It was the loneliness that frightened her. (p.14) The passage shows the abrupt loneliness Lily feels since she loses her friends, and it also dramatizes her poverty by enabling her to reach a startling realization about herself. Lily realizes that the loneliness she feels is not due to not having friends or money, but the fact that she had been living a life so poor in purpose or reason. Lily begins to feel lonely after she quickly loses the company of her friends. In the past, she enjoyed a simple life of playing bridge and attending fancy dinners with the wealthy women of high society.

But now, her reputation is shattered and she realizes the women in her society are cruel and would not hesitate to talk about her behind her back. She knew, moreover, that if the ladies at Bellomont permitted themselves to criticize her friends openly, it was a proof that they were not afraid of subjecting her to the same treatment behind her back. (p.15) Lily feels so lonely that she is desperate in rebuilding her reputation, and the first step in the tedious task was to find out, as soon as possible, on how many of her friends she could count. (p. 17) But without the money and luxuries that her old friends had, Lily finds she has even fewer friends to count on that she thought, making it very difficult to regain her position in high society. Lilys increasing poverty, in addition to the loss of all her old friends continues to make her feel lonely.

The painful fact that she owes Gus Trenor nine thousand dollars is a hard blow on Lily. Lily knows she is alone in a terrible position, and feels trapped She seemed a stranger to herself, or rather there were two selves in her, the one she had always known, and a new abhorrent being to which it found itself chained. (p. 14) Suddenly she is no longer the strikingly beautiful Lily Bart that everyone attends to, but a poor and lonely woman in a crowded restaurant whose eyes sought the faces about her, craving a responsive glance, some sign of an intuition of her trouble. (p.0) Lilys feelings of loneliness are heightened when she discovers that she did not inherit her Aunt Julias estate. A large sum of money could easily alleviate most of her worries and loneliness. She knows that if she had money she could pay off all of her debts and maybe go on to win back her friends. Thats why her aunt Julias death is not as shocking as expected; she could use her inheritance to pay off the debts and to finally put an end to the feelings of loneliness caused by them. But after the reading of the will, Lily stood apart from the general movement, feeling herself for the first time utterly alone. (p. 1) She knows that the women would have accepted her if she had inherited the entire estate, They were afraid to snub me while they thought I was going to get the money-afterward they scuffled off as if I had the plague. (p.14) Without the money, Lily continues to live alone and helpless.

Lily Barts dilemma of poverty is dramatized when Lily feels a different kind of loneliness, one that leads her to a horrifying self-realization. This new loneliness that she feels is not due to material poverty, but of deeper empoverishment-of an inner destitution compared to which outward conditions dwindled into insignificance. (p. 06) Being poor made Lily feel lonely, but now she is sickened by the realization that her life quickly passed by without any meaning or substance. While other women married and lived rich lives, or worked for charitable causes like Gerty Farish, she saw that there had never been a time when she had had any real relation to life...Such a vision of the solidarity of life had never before come to Lily. (p. 06-7) Lilys dilemma of poverty and now this deeper impoverishment is further dramatized when Lily feels moments of happiness before falling asleep at the end of the novel. Before falling asleep Lily feels Nettie Struthers baby against her arm she suddenly understood why she did not feel herself alone…Nettie Struthers child was laying on her arm…but she felt no great surprise at the fact, only a gentle penetrating thrill of warmth and pleasure. (p. 10)

Lily finds comfort in Netties baby and cherishes its essence. Netties child gives hope, and confirms Lilys new beliefs that she could find happiness within a lifestyle less than luxurious. Without the discomfort of loneliness, Lily peacefully falls asleep believing that she could beat the odds like Nettie Struther had done. After losing all of her friends and all of her money, Lilys sudden loneliness enables her to realize that her life was fleeting and insignificant. Her carefree days are over and her shallow friends gone. Lily had no heart to lean on, (p. 14) and the pains of being poor and lonely lead her to realize that her life had passed quickly with nearly no purpose or reason. But Nettie Struthers child, a symbol of perseverance offers a glimmer of hope and eternal peace. The novel ends dramatically when Lily dies still feeling Netties child beside her, with all her debts paid, and all the loneliness vanished; yet Lily Bart is still something rootless and ephemeral, mere spindrift of the whirling surface of existence. (p. 06) To conclude, I must point out that woman's reputation of the historical period depicted in the book seemed to be more seriously treated than it is nowadays. Any woman back had to face the necessity of constant self-control in her words and actions. This factor was oftentimes a main obstacle to self-realization of women.

The Cambodian Killing Fields

On April 17th, 175, The Khmer Rouge (a communist group led by Pol Pot), took over power in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. They forced all of the villagers into the countryside to labor camps. During Pol Pot's reign there are an estimated million dead because of starvation, torture or execution.

Pol Pot declared the year to be zero. He began a radical program to create an idealized agrarian communist society. He crushed all social institutions like banking, religion, all stores, hospitals and schools. Intellectuals and anyone else seen as standing in the way of their new social order was killed on the spot, and from the many who did escape execution usually died from overwork and starvation. Everyone had to work anywhere from 1-14 hours a day, 7 days a week. Children were seperated from their parents to work in either mobile groups or as soldiers. All of the people were only fed one watery bowl of soup with a little bit of rice in it. The Khmer Rouge killed people if they did not like them, if the they did not work hard enough according to their standards , if they were educated, if they came from a different ethnic group or if they showed any kind of sympathy when they were taken away from their family, or if their family was taken away from them to be killed. All the people had to pledge allegiance to Angka, (the Khmer Rouge Government). Their campaign was based on proposing total fear and keeping the people of Cambodia off balance.

Once the Vietnamese invaded and released the Cambodian people 600,000 of them went to Thailand border camps. Ten million land mines were left in the ground though, one for every person of Cambodia. The United Nations then installed the largest peacekeeping mission in the world in Cambodia to make sure there were fair elections. Cambodia was ruined by the Khmer Rouge years. Pol Pot really did turn it back into year zero, and up to this day Cambodia is still trying to recover.

10 Guidelines to selling your property

InfoChoice

1. Choose your agent

Telephone the Real Estate Institute of your state's Membership section for a list of REI Members in your area. Ask REI Members to provide you with a marketing plan. (REI Members must abide by the REIQ Code of Ethics.)

. Establish house price

Your selected agents can use market analysis and comparative sales techniques to guide you on realistically pricing your home. Realistic pricing helps sell quickly.

. Choose a marketing plan

Your chosen agent can then guide you on the most effective forms of sale, which include auctions, Multilist, and exclusive and sole agencies. REI research shows newspapers and window displays play an important part in the marketing process, as can property Internet sites, such as Realnet.

4. Allocate funds for marketing

The REI recognises and supports the industry "rule of thumb" that sellers should allocate about 1 per cent of the value of the property to marketing. Agents and newspaper advertising staff can then provide you with expert advice on effective advertising.

5. Have documentation to assist listing agent

As the seller, you should have such information as a recent rates notice, title information and perhaps a photocopy of the mortgage document for your agent.

6. Complete minor repairs

Minor repairs should be carried out before the property is listed for sale.

7. Secure a building inspection report

Having a building inspection report from a reputable person assures the buyer that the property has been inspected and that any major faults have been noted.

8. Access to property

Once the property is listed for sale, the agent must have access to the property without having to find the owner and then wait for keys. Lack of access could create a missed sale opportunity.

. Be prepared for an inspection at any time

Once the agent has access to your property, they may take potential buyers to your property at any time during work hours after telephoning you first. Keeping the house tidy means your property looks its best all the time.

10. Maintain presentation of property

Presentation is not just about keeping the inside of the property tidy, but also about keeping the lawns mown, shrubs tidy and hoses put away. A tidy property is a saleable property.

I woke up late, around ten a.m. I was past my normal time for waking on game day. I went downstairs and everyone else was already up. My mom was out walking the dog, my dad at work and my sister was watching television. I opened the pantry door and it creaked like normal. Inside it smelled of sugar and cereal. I grabbed two "ding-dongs" and went to the fridge. I poured myself a glass of milk and walked into the living room. My sister was watching something on VH1 or something and I wanted to watch Sportscenter. I ate my breakfast slowly and the milk cleaned the chocolate out of my teeth. As I sat there, absentmindedly-watching TV, my mom walked into the house. She was wide-awake after her walk with the dog. My dog's shiny black coat glistened with snow as she sniffed me and wagged her tail. I walked upstairs after I finished cleaning up my breakfast and I brushed my teeth. I put on some new clothes and looked at my watch, 1045.

We would be leaving for my hockey game soon. We were playing Stoughton at 115 in Stoughton. They aren't in our team's league so the game won't even count in the standings. Our team was in second place in the league and we were in a good spot to go to state. I thought about all this as I walked down the stairs. My sister had left the room so I turned on my XBOX and started to play NHL 00. My mom told me we had to get going so I turned off the game. I walked into the mudroom to pick up my bag and sticks. I opened the door to the garage and walked out. My dad already had the Tahoe running in the driveway. I tossed my stuff in the back and hopped in the backseat. It was a thirty-minute ride to Stoughton and I was drowsy on the way there. I drank a Pepsi and quickly came to my senses. Our team hadn't played Stoughton this year and it wasn't even a league game. My mind wasn't on the game today it was looking forward to the State Tournament.

The rink smelled like any other rink, and looked the same except for the funky locker rooms. The room was small and the walls were purple, the high school's colors. Everything was going along well and I didn't have any bad feelings. Our team felt confident as we dressed for the game. Looking across the locker room I saw a sea of blue and yellow Flyer's jerseys. Coach walks in the door and wits for us to settle down. He starts talking about our mistakes and what we need to do to beat this team. Everyone in the room was stone faced. We got up all ready to hurt some people. Our team slowly pours onto the ice and then explodes in a flash of steel. My old Vapors cut into the ice as I skate around the rink. The newly sharpened blades spray snow into the air as I come to a stop at the face off circle. My muscles loosen up as I stretch out. The team lines up on the boards to do our wind sprints.

My feet move fast as I fly across the rink. I turn my feet to stop, black. No memory of what happened next occurs to me except that I heard a loud sound. I recognize this sound; it is the sound of some one crashing into the boards. There is numbness in my left leg and my brain is frozen. Knowing something is wrong, I move my head to look at my legs. My right is underneath the other and I try to move the left. I see the nub of my femur push on my hockey sock. "Get coach!" I yelled half-heartedly because all of my strength was drained. Coach came over and took off my helmet and asked me what was wrong. "The top part of my leg is broken," I said. My parents come out onto the ice.

My mom asks, "What happened?"

"I broke my leg." I said wearily. Coach and my dad started to pick me up to carry me off the ice. I am shaking and I feel like I hadn't eaten in days. The pain is overwhelming as my leg dangles crookedly towards the ice. The muscles in the thigh are shaking and twitching trying to stabilize the bone. I am sitting on the lowest seat of the bleachers and Mrs. Loch is holding my leg up and the twitching is uncontrollable. Someone hands me water and I am thankful and I sip slowly as the water calms my stomach. I look over at the small clock on the other end of the rink and it says 11. The game should start in three minutes, but that is the least of my concerns. My dad is getting directions to the Stoughton Hospital and some adults are preparing to lift me up while keeping my back facing the ground. They lift me up and the bone scrapes against itself. My teeth grind together in pain as we work our way slowly out of the building. I am placed into the back of our Tahoe and my mom holds the disconnected part of my leg. The bone is scraping against itself and it is excruciating as my mom holds my leg up. The ride to the hospital was long and included many bumps, unluckily enough.

When the car turns and slows to a stop, realizations flood through my head. I am at a hospital, I should be playing hockey with my team. Why am I here? Why does my leg not work? Soon after the realizations are flooded by red, smelly, awful pain. My head is moving outside of the truck as my mom slides along the backseat. The gurney feels stiff as the CCM shoulder pads I am wearing rest upon it. I scream in pain as the leg is twisted or moved the wrong way. My anger rises as I hear about ten people telling me how it will be okay. I know what's happening, I watch television. I know that I won't be able to do anything for a couple months.

After what seems like hours, my gurney arrives in a room. The nurses tell me about how they are going to lift me onto a bed and I am not listening, just gritting my teeth. Another wave of heat and mind blowing pain screams through me as nurses lift me onto the bed. Finally I can relax a little. The nurses put a few pillow under and around my leg to hold it in place. I am stripped to nothing and an IV is put into my right forearm. Some nurse is telling me about what is flowing into my veins. After some questions, a doctor comes into the room and tells me about how I can't go into surgery because my stomach is too full. I trust him because if I were to choke on my own puke during surgery, there would be many complications.

The pain is going away slightly as I relax and my parents talk to the doctor outside of the room. I lay waiting smelling the medicated smell of injury, pain and death. I have no idea what lies ahead so I decide to focus on what is happening now. A little girl and her dad walk into the room split into two by a sheet. The girl had been ice fishing with her father and gotten cut. While her father was pulling out the auger, he accidentally hit her as she reached down for a piece of ice. The girl had to get stitches and she was so little and innocent. Her voice wavered as she spoke to the doctor and she sounded very afraid. The doctor put the stitches in and they were on their way after they filled out some paperwork.

The little girl's close encounter with an auger kept me busy for a while. I felt bad for the little girl as she was only about four and had to get stitches in her head. At roughly one-thirty in the afternoon, my dad came back into the room. He explained to me what was wrong and what could be done to fix it. My dad told me that I could either have a rod or a plate put in my leg. I hadn't really thought about how the leg would be fixed and these solutions, for some reason, surprised me. My dad continued and said that a plate would most likely be used because with a rod, since I am young and haven't stopped growing, there is a chance that it could mess up my whole hip. This would then require an entire hip replacement. My mind snapped, I felt so horrible and alone at that moment. Even though I knew everyone would help me through this, I felt like the most unlucky person in the world at that moment, like every possible thing that could go wrong, went wrong at that moment.

After about an hour more of sitting, I was taken into surgery. They put some warm blankets on me and told me to breath deeply out of that tube thing they put over peoples' mouths. They told me that I was breathing air, but they lied. It had a sharp taste to it and I was out like a light in a few seconds.

I woke up around six-thirty and there was a large woman standing by my bed. She was preparing to put some blood circulators on my legs. She commented on my awakening as did my parents. They asked mindless questions and my dry mouth answered them just as senselessly. After the lady put the circulators on my legs, she showed me how to work the lights, bed, and television. Well, the light controls didn't work and the TV channels only went up. That night was the worst I have ever experienced. The circulators kept me awake, as did the automated blood pressure machine that took my blood pressure about four times an hour. I had to pee constantly and I would wake up every once and a while and press my morphine drip button.

The next morning I had to get dressed which was hard. After that I ate some horrible hospital food. A short while after I ate, a short man came into my room with a set of crutches. He worked with me on sitting, walking and using stairs. Then my surgeon gave my mom a medication that we filled on the thirty-minute car ride home. The next few days were horrible. I had to sit around all day and I couldn't even lift my own leg. The medication worked except that I had to eat it in pudding or water because I have a gag reflex problem. I can't swallow something without chewing it first. On top of emotional shock and inability to move, I had to do homework. I suffered through three days of sitting at home and the Thursday after I broke my leg I returned to school.

Eight days after I left the hospital, I went back to Stoughton for a checkup. The last of the bandages were taken off and the x-rays looked normal. I was to come back six weeks later.

The next six weeks went by slowly and it seemed like I had been on crutches all my life. During these six weeks, my dad had broken his upper femur and my hockey team won second in a tournament. I was dumbfounded when I found out about my dad. My mom and sister and I went down to see him at Saint Mary's. He was going to be fine and didn't need anything to be done to it as long as he was careful for the next couple of weeks. I went back to the doctor in Stoughton and e told me that I could put half of my weight on it for the next three to four weeks. Then I could gradually progress and ditch the crutches.

Going through this whole thing has really changed me. I know what it is like to be unable to walk and I have gone through surgery. Breaking my leg taught me to depend on other people more and that I cannot go through life without injury. I have also learned that having small blades on your skates is never a good thing and that you should always buy new ones if they are worn down.

Most people might have felt revengeful anger at least once in their lifetime, and some of them realize it to action, because they can not control their momentary anger, or they expect satisfaction and completion. But guilty and nothingness always follow the result of their actions, especially if it is criminal. Moreover, unrelated people could be involved and destroyed in other people¡¯s revenge, and it bears another anger and revenge. For example, the president Bush and other Americans might feel sorry for uncountable people who were innocent and killed in the war which was revenge of the .11 terror, even though the war was necessary for solving national political problem, keeping peace through replacement of axis of evil, and prevention for Iraqi terrorists¡¯ retaliation to America. However, in the tragic play Hamlet, written by William Shakespear, Hamlet who is son of King Hamlet kills his uncle Cladius who has murdered King Hamlet to take the seat of king. Hamlet¡¯s revenge toward Cladius could be shown as Justice, but in the other hand, it is also a crime. Hamlet¡¯s revenge can not be justified, because all of his actions are illegal and immoral.

First, Hamlet commits crime. He kills Cladius who is foe, uncle, father or the king to him. That¡¯s a murder and crime, and it cannot be excepted by any reason, because same cases would happen if it is not cared by low. He also kills Polonius, because Polonius is just overhearing him and the Queen who is Hamlet¡¯s mother. He knows sadness about losing someone, but he kills someone who could be a father like King Hamlet was his father without any hesitation or regret. It shows how selfish and immoral he is, and he is not different with Cladius at all. (quotation)

However, Hamlet feels so sad about Polonius¡¯ daughter¡¯s death. But it could be Hamlet¡¯s indirect murder, because he charges her huge sadness, shock, and sorrow. Plus, Polonius¡¯ daughter would have another revengeful mind or plan toward Hamlet, and might bring another meaningless death if she was not dead. Hamlet¡¯s stupid action consequently killed two innocent people. (quotation)

Hamlet sees and feels uselessness, sadness, guiltiness and meaninglessness of a murder in the view of third person, moreover, he can forecast resultant of his plan. But he keeps going the project. Moreover, he avoids punishment, because he acts like a mad man, and it is fraud. It shows he is not repenting for his murders by heart but only by tongue. Thus, Hamlet is actually a kind of evil who is just desiring Cladius¡¯ death different with he is being represented like a hero in the play.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on wonchan

Second, Hamlet¡¯s action is realistically and morally bad. First of all, he doesn¡¯t have any certain evidence about Cladius¡¯ assassination. Although, Cladius¡¯ assassination is necessary and the most important source for progress of the play, Hamlet must have made it sure. If this case of murder by confident belief is justified or shown as a hero in real world, society will be fallen into deep confusion and disarrangement. However, Hamlet decides to kill Cladius after the conversation with soul of King Hamlet and he sees nervous actions of Claudius during the play which is about his assassination, but that does not make any sense. (quotation)

Besides, Hamlet intentionally and indirectly kills two servants of Cladius who were innocent and also his fellows by fixing the letter from Cladius to English Queen badly. Although he gets angry from Cladius¡¯s plot what is about to kill him, he doesn¡¯t have to kill them. (quotation) Therefore, it represents that Hamlet has no sympathy for other¡¯s lives. Therefore, he has no right to swear Cladius ethically.

Third, the conclusion of the play Hamlet expresses the absurd of Hamlet¡¯s revenge. Finally Polonius¡¯ son decides to assassinate Hamlet with Cladius. He is going to kill him during fencing game with put some poison on the sward. (quotation) Finally the sward of revengeful Polonius¡¯ son gets Hamlet down. It could look like Hamlet¡¯s tragic death, but there is no different between Hamlet¡¯s and Cladius¡¯ deaths. Hamlet is a foe of Polonius¡¯ son like Cladius is to him. If Hamlet¡¯s revenge was justice, or at least the process of retaliation was ethical, there would be no reason for the assassination. Plus, the important point is that the resultants of the two revenges were regretful and sorrowful. (quotaion) However, Norway¡¯s princess gets control over Denmark. How meaningless end of Hamlet¡¯s life is. Consequently, he just ruins the great accomplishment of his father, King Hamlet through the stupid revenge. (quotation) Hamlet needed to relax himself, and he¡¯d batter try to discover and notify the truth of King Hamlet¡¯s death than follow his retaliatory heart. Plus, he shouldn¡¯t ignore the lessons from committing crimes.

In conclusion, Hamlet¡¯s retaliation is meaningless, guilt, and regretful. He needed to control himself, and view the actual world realistically. If He did so, he could foresee the resultants of his revenge, and protect many people and even himself from death. In Japanese animation the Roaming Kenshin, a police officer says ¡®Revenge is forbidden by law¡¯. It explains that with any reason, crime is crime, and revenge is so possible to create another tragedy. Thus, Hamlet¡¯s ¡®eye for eye, tooth for tooth¡¯ way is not a good way, and his contradictive death explains it very well. Also in this world, sometimes people have revenge because of losing of self-control or not thinking about future. Moreover, they destroy other unrelated people through their revenge, because people are living in a community. Therefore, revenge cannot be justified no matter what is the reason. Thus, if people always be aware of that revenge bears revenge, and think about after and others, they could increase unhappy accident of life wisely.

In today's society, gay and lesbian parenting is a very controversial issue. Many believe that children of gay and lesbian parents do not grow up the same as children of heterosexual parents. A typical family is defined as having a father and mother figure. Children need a balance in their lives and same sex parents can not provide that balance efficiently. Children of gay and lesbian parents face disturbing difficulties throughout their lives. This may then affect the child psychologically, emotionally and physically. Then the child may be harassed at school and teased constantly. Many issues indicate that incidence of domestic violence in gay and lesbian couples are probably at least as high as in a heterosexual couple. It is unsafe for a child to live in a violent environment, which can lead abusing the child.

Children need to realize and witness how men and women deal with certain situations differently. "Children need to be informed of different situations that will occur to them throughout their lives". Lesbian and Gay Rights Overview of lesbian and Gay Parenting, Adoption and Foster

parent/html). For instance, a girl needs her mother at puberty and her father to help her with her car. A father does not know how a female body reacts during puberty, therefore; he can not relate to the changes in her body that she will experience. For example, cramps that woman get during their menstrual cycle or the tenderness of the breast developing. That is why she needs a mother figure in her life. A mother can not go under her daughter's vehicle and tell her she needs a tune up or an oil change. In this case this is where the father comes along and helps her with her car. There is an imbalance because the child will never learn to identify with one sex that is absent for their life and the child will not be able to distinguish the role of a mother and the role of a father. (Smalls, Rhonda personal interview at Kaiser Permanente, Sunset Boulevard. 8 May, 00). Many have the idea that children who grow up in a homosexual home have a higher chance of becoming homosexual themselves because the children are exposed to a homosexual environment. The child gets affected deeply because it confuses them and

therefore; when they get older they are confused about their own sexuality. This is believed to be true because the child learns the parent's ways and want to be just like their role models who are the parents.

Children that have parents of the same sex experience prejudice and harassment. "People have to realize that in today's society children tease one another for the oddest reasons, if there is not a reason to tease or gang up on someone, someone is sure to find or make up something."

(Sociologist Challenge Data on Gay Parenting, Los Angeles Times 7 Apr. 001 8 May 00 http//wwww.proquest.com Glendale Community College). This hurts the child psychologically. When the child attends school, the other kids will find out their parents are homosexual. Therefore, the child gets teased, harassed and feels like an outcast because the other kids do not want to play with them. The child gets hurt emotionally and physically feeling all alone. Children raised in a traditional family by a father and mother are happier, healthier and more successful.

"Domestic violence has always been a hidden phenomenon and it can be even more difficult in the context of same sex relationship." Niolon, Richard, "Domestic violence in Gay and Lesbian couples" Gay and Lesbian resources 8 May.

Standing on the sandy beach, I took a deep breadth of the air. It smelt salty. The beach was empty and quiet except for the crushing of waves on the beach and rustling of palm leaves by the gentle cool breeze. The sun was going to take a break from a day's work and he tinged the sky into a sea of orange and red. Puffs of blushing clouds accompany the birds in the sky.

I kicked off my sandals and ran towards the sea, stamping around the water, sending beads of water flying around. The palm trees along the beach were swaying with the wind. They look like dancer dancing gracefully along with the nature's music, I thought.

The beach felt grainy and soft under my foot as I returned to the beach. It was speckled with seaweeds and seashells. Choosing a spot under a palm tree and lay my back on the trunk, I closed my eyes and listened as the crushing sea waves, sea breeze and the rustling leaves performed a nature's symphony.

Darkness gradually shrouded the sky. I found a spot and lay down on the beach where I could get a clear view of the night sky, getting ready for the beauty of the night.

Thousands of stars were hanging in the sky, twinkling back at me while some of them were hiding behind the clouds. They were like clear water droplet clinging on the window pane after a heavy rain. A silver disc was up in the night sky, lying lazily on a cloud and was showering the beach with beams of light. In addition to the nature's music, the crickets were buzzing on the nearby grass.

I brushed away the sands on my pants and left the beach, leaving behind trails of my footsteps on the damp sand which were quickly erased by the sea waves.

On September 11th, 001 as I looked up at the television set broadcasting the collapse of the World Trade Center I was filled with confusion. As I sat in my English class all eyes were glued to the television, as we watched replays of the planes crashing and the buildings imploding. We had been attacked. My first reaction was of disbelief, no way did terrorists destroy the World Trade Center and attack the Pentagon it just wasn't feasible. Two of the proudest symbols of our might and way life had been attacked and destroyed. In their book "In The Wake Of /11 The Psychology of Terror" Pyszczynski, Solomon, and Greenberg claim that the events of September 11th "hit us with a one-two punch of mortality salience coupled with a major attack on our cultural anxiety buffer" (Pyszczynski ). This is a very strong argument because the claim is clear, the grounds are excellent, and the conditions of rebuttal are well developed.

Pyszczynski et al's argument is strong because it begins with a solid claim. Pyszczynski et al begin the body of the chapter by immediately stating their claim, "the /11 terrorist attack hit us with a one-two punch of morality salience coupled with a major attack on our cultural anxiety buffer" (). Opening with a strong statement like this, the authors let us know from the very beginning where they stand. The text states the claim throughout the chapter, reassuring the reader of the author's intentions. Their sufficient grounds further solidify Pyszczynski et al's claim.

Pyszczynski et al's grounds are strong and thorough. Pyszczynski et al use many respected studies, psychological theories, and the principles of TMT to back their claim. Pyszczynski et al state that the "one two punch" was a literal and psychological blow upon us. Pyszczynski et al recall a study in which it is stated "0% of Americans either knew someone or knew someone who knew someone that was missing, hurt, or killed by the terrorist attacks on /11" (4). This large degree of personal association with death caused people to feel very vulnerable. The authors quote two citizens that noticed significant increases in business immediately following /11 stating that gun sales and the drafting of wills went up dramatically. In the language of TMT these increases were results of a heightened sense of death accessibility as a result of the "one-two punch of morality salience coupled with a major attack on our cultural anxiety buffer" (). Therefore citizens reacted by purchasing guns in an effort to feel more secure and drafted wills to feel as thought their family would be taken care of in case of the worst. The authors point out that Bible sales increased 45%, religious internet sites experienced a 50% increase in traffic and the massive increases in displays of patriotism were all in efforts to repair our cultural anxiety buffer (101). These observations strengthen the authors' claim because they follow along with the principles of TMT and are common behavior among people who have undergone the type of emotional strain the authors claim Americans did. Pyszczynski et al observe that many people reacted with violence and anger towards those deemed threatening whether it was justified or not. Pyszczynski et al state "Sometimes the fear, anger, and desperate need for understanding resulting from heightened accessibility of death thoughts are directed toward those with no obvious similarities to the perpetrators of the attacks. Recall that research has demonstrated that mortality salience produces especially punitive reactions to moral transgressions" (105). After /11 the United States looked for people to honor after the tragedy. Pyszczynski et al state that this need for heroes was an effort to repair the damage done to our cultural anxiety buffer as a result of /11. The text states "mortality salience leads people to view positive social actions as more desirable" meaning faced with ideas of death, as a people we reach for our ideals and virtues to give us comfort (10). Pyszczynski et al produce evidence of studies that link this type of behavior, the opposition of those different and embracing the ones viewed as friends to TMT, which again strengthens their claim. Pyszczynski et al support their claim with studies and observations as grounds to strengthen their argument. The argument is effective because of these solid grounds.

Pyszczynski et al's argument is very strong despite lacking conditions of rebuttal. Their claim that terrorist attacks "hit us with a one-two punch of mortality salience coupled with a major attack on our cultural anxiety buffer" is very well established (). The authors spend chapters 1-4 explaining and arguing TMT and by now assume the reader accepts their theories. All of the evidence the authors present from many different studies makes it a very sound argument and difficult to oppose. The intended audience being the American public witnessed first hand how the country responded to the attacks and can see that the conclusions Pyszczynski et al draw are correct. The argument is not weakened for lack of conditions of rebuttal due to its strong claim and extensive grounds.

Custom Essays on Analyzing In The Wake Of 9/11

In conclusion, America has bounced back. We have continued on with our lives and are now stronger and better for the events of September 11th. We have learned to set aside the fear and move perpetually forward in effort to show the terrorists that we will never be broken. Pyszczynski's argument is very effective. /11 did deliver a "one two punch" to our sense of security, but as TMT states fear is managed by our sense and maintenance of our culture. This is why we must always continue with the American way of life. Nothing can repair the damage to our cultural anxiety buffer and mortality salience quite like resuming our way of life and fighting harder for it.

Persuasive Essay

Euthanasia

Euthanasia is a complex topic dealing with ending an individuals life. Before we can fully understand euthanasia we have to define 'life'. Do we see 'life' as the functioning of the body, or the brain? Or by 'life' do we mean the experiences of a human being? Euthanasia is most bluntly defined as the act of the doctor killing patient. Euthanasia can be defined in more detail as a sort of mercy killing in which a doctor assists in painlessly ending the life of a terminally ill patient out of mercy. Ultimately euthanasia is ethical and should be a legal practice for physicians.

Ethical is thought to mean conforming to accepted standards; however, is it ethical for a person who is terminally ill and experiencing unbearable pain to be forced to live through this suffering with no hope? The answer is obvious. Therefore, euthanasia is ethical. Suicide can be ethically justified if an individual has a terminal illness or a severe handicap either of which causes so much pain and torment that life is intolerable. The decision of ending ones life be made wisely. In all cases the individual should seek medical assistance before even considering taking their life. If you consider the meaning of ethical with religion, euthanasia remains ethical as God is understanding and does not want you to suffer.Order custom research paper on euthanasia

There will always be people who believe euthanasia is unethical. These people believe that life is valuable no matter what the quality of it. I wonder what their position would be if they were spending their life saving's to keep a loved one of their's barely breathing and in immense pain in a hospital bed with no hope of their condition ever improving. From a logistic point of view it is obvious that it makes no sense to have a human being have to experience intolerable pain with nothing to hope for except death when they could have their pain ended comfortably and quietly.

In opinion poles done across the United States, it was found that the majority of Americans want physicians to be legally enabled to assist terminally ill patients end their suffering. It can even be seen as inhuman to refuse such a plea for help. This in mind it would be beneficial for doctors to be able to participate in euthanasia legally rather than having to do it behind closed doors. Not only could this be dangerous, it could put the doctors at legal risk. Euthanasia should be a legal last resort in which a patient can turn to his or her doctor for.

Lastly, euthanasia should be legalized so that all terminally ill patients may have the right to resort to it if they choose so. Conditions which have been suggested for such a law if it were passed include that physician-assisted suicide be totally voluntary. This would mean that the request could only be made by the individual. This individual must also be a competent adult. This would put the patient in control, not the physician or the family. Another condition would be that it is only available to terminally ill patients. This means that the patient must have 6 months or less to live as pronounced by a medical professional. Simple conditions like these would allow for euthanasia to be legalized in our country.

People who disagree with euthanasia claim that it would harm society and put a lower value on human life. Euthanasia is not to be seen as an easy cure for any disease, it is simply a peaceful way for a patient to pass with o suffering. And for those that say euthanasia is barbaric, I would argue the fact that it is more barbaric to leave a person to suffer.

All said, euthanasia is ethical and should be a legal last resort that physicians can turn to help a terminally ill patient. What it all comes down to is that it is disgusting to leave a human being to suffer needlessly with no hope of their condition improving or ever being able to smile again.

In my essay, I would show the distribution between power, authority and influence leading to distribution of the political sources of power, which in turns can cause political behavior. Lastly I would also state the factors that would contribute to organizational politics.

It is important for us to define power and how it differs from authority and influence. According to Richard Daft, "Power is the potential ability to influence others' behavior" and it is also "The extent to which individuals are able to persuade, induce or coerce others into following course of actions" quoted by Johnson and Scholes. As for influence, according to Handy it is the "Use of power" and it is also the process through which the behavior of a person or a group is modified. Lastly, authority is the recognition of acceptance or someone's right to use power. It is important to note that we can have power without authority and one could also have great influence without authority. Therefore power, authority and influence are all individuals element and one could have the one of the element without the others.

brought to task?" you ask. Democracy is about putting numbers on a piece of paper every four years. We are given a choice all right, but between parties who all agree with the system of a tiny minority ruling the country. So, is it possible for anarchy to exist? At the moment capitalism would collapse without the support of the working class. We make everything, we produce all the wealth. The sad thing is, most of the working class does believe America is being run in our interests. So, my answer is no; I don't think anarchy will ever come to beAnarchy

Anarchism seems to be defined many ways by many different sources. Most dictionary definitions define anarchism as the absence of government. A leading modern dictionary, Websters Third International Dictionary, defines anarchism briefly but accurately as, a political theory opposed to all forms of government and governmental restraint and advocating voluntary cooperation and free association of individuals and groups in order to satisfy their needs. Other dictionaries describe anarchism with similar definitions. The Britannica-Webster dictionary defines the word anarchism as, a political theory that holds all government authority to be unnecessary and undesirable and advocates a society based on voluntary cooperation of individuals and groups. William Godwin was the first proclaimed anarchist in history and the first to write about anarchism. Godwin published a book called Political Justice in 17 which first introduced his ideas about anarchism, Godwin was forgotten about, however, and after his death Pierre Joseph Proudhon became a leading anarchist figure in the world. His book What is Property? incorporated greater meaning to the word anarchism; anarchism became not only a rejection of established authority but a theory opposing ownership of land and property as well. Anarchism fully blossomed as a defined theory when Russian anarchists Mikhail Bakunin (1814-1876) and Peter Kropotkin (184-11) started to write and speak. Bakunin had a major influence in the world and introduced anarchism to many people. Kropotkin was one of the many people inspired by Bakunin. Kropotkin wrote many books on anarchism, including Muitual Aid, Fields Factories and Workshops, and The Conquest of Bread, and greatly aided in the evolution of the theory of anarchism. As the 0th century emerged anarchism began to peak and the definition of anarchism became concrete with the growth of new anarchist writers and movements. The execution and imprisonment of eight anarchists in Chicago in 1886 sparked anarchisms growth in the United States. The Haymarket Eight flourished anarchists such as Voltairine de Cleyre and Lucy Parsons. Parsons was born into slavery and later became an anarchist and an ardent speaker and working class rebel; the Chicago police labeled Parsons, ...more dangerous than a thousand rioters. Although the word anarchism is understood by many in its classic sense (that defined by dictionaries and by anarchists of history), the word often seems to be misused or misunderstood. Anarchism, because of the threat it imposes upon established authority, has been historically, and is still, misused by power holders as violence and chaos. The claim that anarchism is chaos was refuted long ago by Alexander Berkman when he wrote "I must tell you, first of all, what anarchism is not. It is not bombs, disorder, or chaos. It is not robbery or murder. It is not a war of each against all. It is not a return to barbarianism or to the wild state of man. Anarchism is the very opposite of all that." So, what is anarchism? All of the pro-anarchy sources I found say that, basically, anarchism is a political philosophy that embraces democracy and freedom, and seeks to destroy all forms of coercion and oppression. The root of human oppression is seen as authority and inequality. This is why they think it is the perfect ideological guide for destroying poverty, racism, and sexism. All these oppressions are systems of power based on hierarchy. Hierarchy means top-down, like a pyramid. Hierarchical constructions of power create positions of relative privilege and relative oppression. Capitalism, white supremacy, and patriarchy (male supremacy) are also top-down constructions of power. Anarchism conceptualizes power differently. Instead of power over, anarchism proposes power with, cooperation. This means that social systems and institutions should be based on cooperation and compromising. Power would rest in individuals and the collectives they freely associate into. Anarchism revolves around five basic principles 1) equality; ) democracy; ) free association; 4) mutual aid; 5) diversity. Equality can have many different meanings. In regards to the anarchist political philosophy, they speak of equality in reference to power. This doesnt mean they want a new society based on a totalitarian vision of everyone looking and acting the same, in fact they see strength in diversity. Instead they mean that everyone should have equal access to power, to determine how he or she wants to live his or her lives. It appears the best way for equal power to be institutionalized is through different forms of democracy. Democracy is a vague notion, but in general it seeks to empower everyone to have an equal say in decisions that affect their lives. This is only useful if it extends to all areas of social life. Capitalism is undemocratic, in my opinion, especially when combined with racism and sexism. Free Association is the idea that individuals should not be forced into social arrangements against their will. In the world today if you are born into poverty, most likely you will die in poverty. In America, children cannot expect to live at a higher standard than their parents. In an anarchist society collectives-or organizations, would be created for every purpose humanly desired, of people freely associated with equal power to determine its future. This vision extends to all forms of social arrangements - from your neighborhood, to your city, to a neighborhood restaurant, etc. When people work together they can accomplish much more than when they work against each other. I do believe that social organizations should embrace and encourage this. It may seem like common sense, but when you look around, all you see is how we are constantly pitted against each other. So anarchists do not seek to stifle creativity and individual excellence, but hope to spread it out, and allow everyone to chase their dreams. Diversity in this sense, is the key to survival in the future. The modern drive to standardize everything and apply the assembly line to all aspects of social life has left many alienated and hopeless. Instead of trying to make reality conform to state bureaucrats conceptions of order through imposition of their authority; anarchists believe that social organizations function more effectively for the people involved in them if those same people have the power to shape them in ways they desire. So anarchists support diverse forms of democracy, family organization, production, dancing, loving, eating, whatever. Oh yeah, and being free. Here are my thoughts (they may, at first, seem to be off subject, but in the end you'll nderstand why I begin the way I do) At the moment we live in a society in which there are two major classes - the bosses and the workers. The bosses own the factories, banks, shops, etc. Workers dont. All they have is their labor, which they use to make a living. Workers are compelled to sell their labor to the boss for a wage. The boss is interested in squeezing as much work out of the worker for as little wages as possible so that he/she can maintain high profits. Thus the more wages workers get the less profits the bosses make. Their interests are in total opposition to each other. Production is not based on the needs of ordinary people. Production is for profit. Therefore although there is enough food in the world to feed everyone, people starve because profits come first. This is capitalism. There are other classes in society such as the self- employed and small farmers but fundamentally there are workers and bosses whose interests are in opposition to each other. For workers needs to be fully met we must get rid of the bosses. But this is no easy task. The bosses are organized. They have the media on their side. They also have the State and the force of the army and police that go with it. The state (i.e. governments, armies, courts, police, etc.) is a direct result of the fact that we live in a class society. A society where about 7% of the people own, at least, 85% of the wealth. The state is there to protect the interests of this minority, if not by persuasion then by force. Laws are made not to protect us, but to protect those who own the property. If you haven't already guessed it, I don't care much for capitalism. I think it is very deceiving how we are led to believe that the state is run in our interests. "Don't we have elections to ensure that any government not behaving itself can be brought to task?" you ask. So, my answer is no; I don't think anarchy will ever come to be in America. The above paragraphs may make you think that I am now a anarchist. If so, I have misled you. I am against the way our nation is run today, but I do not think anarchy is an applicable alternative. Anarchy sounds as if we could actually live as an utopian society. It is a nice dream, but will never be reality (at least not in my lifetime). When people are free, they are uncontrollable. I like the idea of having groups of different people, with equal power determining how the nation be run, but there needs to be control. I think the only way to come close to having an utopian society, is if someone comes up with a way where we can balance both freedom and control fairly, distribute it equally, and get the working class to believe it will work. Who knows? Maybe someone actually will someday. in America. The above paragraphs may make you think that I am now a anarchist. If so, I have misled you. Traditionally, animals have been used to ensure the safety of our consumer products and drugs. Yet around the world, scientists, regulators and animal protectionists work together to develop alternatives to their use. The use of animals in the life sciences dates back to ancient Greece and the earliest medical experiments. To learn about swallowing, physicians cut open into the throat of a living pig. To study the beating heart, they cut open into its chest. For centuries physicians and researchers used animals to enhance their knowledge about how the various organs and systems of the body functioned, as well as to hone their surgical skills.

As long as animals have been used in experiments, people have expressed concerns about such research. Questions about the morality, necessity, and scientific validity of animal experiments have arisen since those ancient physicians first began to study bodily functions. Alternatives are methods, which refine existing tests by minimizing animal distress, reduce the number of animals necessary for an experiment or replace whole animal use with vitro or other tests. While vivisection has received more attention and funding, clinical and epidemiological (studying the natural course of disease within human population) studies have had a much more profound impact on human health. In fact, clinical and epidemiological evidence linking smoking to lung cancer was established long before warnings of the dangers of smoking were released to the general public. Because animal experimentation failed to each the same conclusion, warning labels on cigarettes were delayed for years! During this time hundreds of people died from lung cancer because the results of animal experimentation were considered more valid than studies of human patients. Animal based research is the science of the past. There are a number of alternatives available to modern researchers, which are less expensive, more reliable, and ethically sound. They provide results rapidly, experimental parameters are easily controlled, and their focus on the cellular and molecular levels of the life process provides more useful information about chemicals and drugs, such as "Extacy". High Productive Volume Tests, test a minimal amount of a product on an abundant amount of animals. Two - hundred baby rats, just three weeks old are placed in wire - bottomed stainless - steel cages. Twice daily Monday thru Friday, laboratory workers pull the small mammals from their cages, force steel clamps into their mouths to hold their jaws apart and swab their teeth with an anti - cavity dental chemical. After three weeks, the workers kill the baby rats by cutting off their teeth. The procedures are called "Biological Tests for Tests Flouride Dentifrices" and Determination of Animal Carries Reduction" (http//members.tripod.com/~animalsinprint/) - puzzling terms to most of us. But the meaning is deadly to animals. The officials who order this test work for the U. S. government 's FDA has made exceptions for manufacturers, including Tom's of Maine, that wanted to market new toothpastes without any tests on animals. If some companies can manufacture safe, effective anti - cavity toothpastes without using any animals, why can't all dental product companies stop killing animals?

The Animal Welfare Act sets standards for the housing, handling, feeding, and transportation of experimental animals, but places no limitations whatsoever on the actual experimental conditions and procedures continue to challenge, whether human beings have the right to "use" animals for any purpose. The HPV Program sounds so important, right? Wrong! Because no resulting action will be taken against the chemicals involved in this program. Instead of protecting the public from hazardous chemicals, the EPA will inform us of how quickly mice and rabbits died when force - fed a chemical, or how many mouse pups were stillborn after their mother was force - fed massive quantities of already known toxic chemicals. Every medical advancement has not been a result of animal testing. Results derived from animal experiments have had a very minimal effect on the dramatic rise of life expectancy can be attributed mainly to changes in lifestyles, environmental factors, and improvements in sanitation. Many medical school's in the U. S. do not use animals in the training of medical students. They include NYU, University of Michigan, and SUNY Stonybrook. Actually, most of the medical schools which do use animals allow students the option of foregoing the animal labs. This is because they clearly acknowledge that such labs are not necessary for the training of doctors.

When a newly released drug hits the market, regardless of how many animal tests have been done, those individuals who first use it are "human guinea pigs." Animal tests are not good indicators of what will occur in humans. It has been due, in large part , to the tension between researchers who view laboratory animals as essential to their work and individuals who oppose animal tests that the modern alternatives movement has evolved. The movement began quietly, in 15, with the publication of The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique by British researchers W. Russell and R. Burch. Russell and Burch advocated the "three R's" of replacement, reduction, and refinement. In the 180's and 10's, their philosophy has enabled researchers and animal welfare advocates to come together with a common goal to find scientifically valid alternatives to animal tests. In conclusion, as proven by the Tom's of Maine Co., and with the approval of the FDA, products can be marketed without the practices of animal cruelty. As a form of life, animals acquire natural rights, one being the right to live, not to be exploited and exposed to pain. As best said by animal activist Jon Evans "To inflict cruelties on defenseless creatures, or condone such acts, is to abuse one of the cardinal tenets of a civilized society - reverence for life."
