The Semi-Formal was next week, and Jason still didn't have a date. There's a girl he's wanted to ask for a while, but he hasn't built up enough courage to actually do it. One would describe Jason as being a bit of a nerd, but he wasn't bad looking at all. The only thing he was lacking was confidence. Brittany, Jason's crush, could definitely be considered as being high on the popularity scale, but for some reason she didn't have a date either. As Jason and his best friend Patrick were on their way to class, they noticed Brittany was standing at her locker. No one else was around, so Jason figured this was as good a time as any to give it a shot.

"Go on Jay, bite the bullet. What have you got to lose?" Patrick said encouragingly as he gave Jason a slight push in her direction.

"Okay, okay, keep your pants on." Then with a deep breath, he said hopefully, "Here goes nothing." As started to walk in Brittany's direction, he went over what he should say in his head. 'Hi Brittany, would you like to be my date for the dance?' That didn't sound too bad, he thought to himself. Before he knew it, he was standing right beside her. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. He could feel his body tensing. She turned to him with a confused look on her face.

"Hi," she said in an awkward tone. Still, Jason couldn't say a word. His face turned bright red, as he quickly turned around and walked away. 'What the heck's the matter with me?' he asked himself angrily. He walked over to Patrick who was waiting for him in the corner.

"Well, how'd it go?" he asked. Jason just looked down. "That good, huh? Oh well, it could be worse. At least you didn't trip and fall on your way there. Cheer up buddy, it's not the end of the world. Remember, tomorrow is another day." They got to class just as the bell rang. The teacher was handing back their tests.

"How'd you do?" Patrick asked Jason.

"I passed with flying colors," Jason replied happily.

At the end of the day as the two of them are walking home, Jason asks Patrick what's the skinny on his ex-girlfriend.

"She keeps giving me the cold shoulder," Patrick replies. "But that's okay. I figure it has to get worse before it gets better, so I'm just going to take it one step at a time." With that, the two boys parted as they reached their homes.
