Intro

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or can't properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy. Diabetes is diagnosed on the basis of too- high levels of glucose in the blood. If you have diabetes, your blood glucose levels rise because of the food you eat. Food has little effect on blood glucose in people without diabetes.

The glucose tolerance test GTT is helpful in identifying diabetes and other diseases of the liver and disorders of carbohydrate metabolism.

The level of glucose in the blood is very important as it is utilised by all tissues, especially the brain, which at a resting state uses approximately 65% of all available glucose. In normal individuals blood glucose levels are usually found inside a range of .5-5.5mmol/L.

Glucose concentrations are tightly controlled by various mechanisms; depending on whether the body is fasting or is in the immediate post-absorptive state. In the immediate post-absorptive state, most of the glucose is supplied by glycogenolysis, and as fasting progresses, gluconeogenesis becomes increasingly important. When the body is in a fasting state, the rate of appearance and disappearance of glucose in the blood is approximately .5-.0mg/kg/min; a rate at which all glucose would disappear from the blood within 100 minutes, were it not continuously replaced. (B.Tuch et.al 000)

The biochemical hallmark of diabetes mellitis is chronic hyperglycaemia which results from an absolute or relative deficiency of insulin. (A.J Krentz 000)

There are two main types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetics make little or no insulin, they are said to be inulin deficient, and Type diabetics make normal or even elevated amounts of insulin but their bodies don't respond to the insulin properly, they are said to be insulin resistant. Instead of going into their cells to be used as energy, the unused glucose builds up in their blood and passes through the kidneys and gets excreted in the urine if the glucose level becomes too high.

Normally, insulin, which is synthesised and excreted by ß-cells of the pancreatic inslets in response to glucose and other secretagogues such as amio acids, allows glucose to enter the cells via specific glucose transporters and be used as fuel. Insulin is the principal anabolic hormone of the body exerting many actions on intermediary metabolism, ion transport and gene expression. (B Tuch, et.al 000)

The major action of insulin is to stimulate translocation of facilitative glucose transporters to the cell membrane. So far six different glucose transporters have been identified. They all share sequence homology, suggesting a common ancestral gene. Each has a specific tissue distribution, and there are thought to be 1 transmembrane domains that form a pore through which glucose is transported. (P.J.Watkins et.al 16)

Gypsy Moth

Hello, I am a female gypsy moth. I live in the cooler places. I am more common than a butterfly. I know that because when I was a little baby which everyone here calls it "larva stage", my parents who I was real proud of, taught me everything as they could about our lifecycle.

It all began when my parents mate and hatched thousands of eggs in the spring. I was attached to a leaf where I can be safe and have enough food to eat. My brothers and sisters were attached on trees, rocks, houses, and just about any other convenient objects. When I hatched, I saw my mommy with beautiful wings and she was white and I saw my daddy with a brown colored body, front of me smiling happily. Order Custom Gypsy Moth paper

I was then a caterpillar which was another stage called larva. I could move and eat. I climbed into tree canopies and began feeding. I ate leaves of oaks, hawthorns, and crabapples. Then after or three days my family got tired of that tree, we needed to do some moving! So my parents were flying into another tree while I had to produce a silken thread, which could carry me in the wind, like a balloon. My family's feeding continued from winter and throughout the rest of the spring. As I grew, I consumed between 5 to 5 leaves. I asked my mommy when my feeding would be done so I could become a pupa, she said, " you will be becoming one in the month of June." When the month finally came, I was so excited.

I was done feeding myself and I enter the pupil stage from which adult moths emerge in 10 to 14 days. When I became an adult, I had beautiful wings and the color of my body was white and pretty. I was all alone and independent. My parents were dead because a predator ate them, a lizard, a spider, bat that I should be, caution from them. I had no clue where did my brothers and sisters go? But I didn't cared much about them because I know they must be living the same life what I am living right now.

One day I was flying during the day looking for a place to rest, suddenly, I bumped into a beautiful colored female butterfly. I didn't know her that much. The only thing I knew was that she was a butterfly who is very friendly and looks almost just like me. I got to know her more (her life story) and she got to know mine. One thing was a big problem between us, which was that I could only meet her for a short time because I am more awake and active during the night while she is during the day.

On night, I used my ears to detect bats over a distance of 0 meters. Then a bat was detected me reacted differently, there was another one who changed its flight direction, which was coming to attack me, closed its wings and dropped itself to the ground. I was all happy and so were everyone else who was hidden behind trees or leaves because I confused the bats with my sound.

When it was time, I found a suitable mate from my scent " perfume" which male adults can be attracted and find the right female which is called a pheromone. The male I found was very loving. Then one night, I produced thousands of eggs during mid- July. They finally hatched on the following spring. I was very proud but one day I left my kids, which they were all adult by then to live somewhere else. Unfortunately, my husband and I were attacked by a spider and were eaten till death.

Now I am in heaven smiling upon my beautiful world. I hope u liked my story was interesting to you.

Throughout the years from 1500 to the early twentieth century the world saw many examples of European expansion. Many European countries shared the same motives for expansion while others were interested in it for different reasons. The main motive for expansion shared by most European countries was economic prosperity.

Great Britain, the Netherlands and Spain were the main leaders in the expansion of European trade. Each country was able to establish itself as a power in the world trade market for different reasons. Spain's main motive for expansion initially was to increase its influence throughout the world, which they inherently succeeded in by their conquests in the Americas. They came to the Americas for both economic and "religious" reasons but mainly for the large amounts of natural resources and the large amounts of silver and gold. When the Spanish established themselves as the leaders of the gold and silver trade, their influence in trade increased.

Great Britain and the Netherlands were more interested in expanding their trade opportunities as well as the goods they traded with. One of the main goods that Great Britain and the Netherlands were interested in was spices. During the 1700's the British began to set up colonies in India and other parts of Asia and the Netherlands colonized many islands in the West Indies. These areas were hot spots for the spice trade in addition to other goods like silk and herbal teas which were much desired by many Europeans.

Once these countries established themselves economically, they developed patterns of trade that were mutually beneficial. For example the Spanish used the gold and silver they got from South America and traded it for manufactured goods from well established industrial countries like Great Britain, the Netherlands and France. This pattern benefited the Spanish in that they were able to easily receive manufactured goods without having to compete in the industrial race that swept across Europe during the 1800's and it benefited the British, Dutch and French in that they were able to receive large amounts of gold and silver in exchange for manufactured goods that were relatively inexpensive to produce; hence, the mutually beneficial trade patterns that enabled European powers like Great Britain, the Netherlands and Spain to emerge as leaders of world trade and advance themselves economically.

Custom Essays on how the world has changed from 1500 to 1900

Another motive for expansion for countries like Spain, Portugal and France was to spread Catholicism. Portugal was one of the first countries to spread Catholicism. In the 1400's, under the leadership of Prince Henry the Navigator, Portugese explorers began to look for a new Christian kingdom that could be an ally against the Muslims. These Portugese explorers made their way south along the west coast of Africa; but, rather than succeeding in expanding Catholicism they discovered new trade opportunities. The slave trade is one example of this.

Through the establishment of colonies, countries like Spain and France were able to succeed, to a degree, in the expansion of Catholicism. However, this motive was clouded in many colonies by the obsession for economic advancement by the colonial powers.

During the 1700's and 1800's many European countries began to setup colonies in Africa, Asia, the Americas as well as the West Indies. This shifted the motive for European expansion to be virtually completely based on economic advancement. With the establishment of Europe as the source of economic and military power, many Europeans began to feel that they were superior to other people throughout the world. This belief was reflected through literature like "The White Man's Burden" among other writings. As a result, many countries tried to justify colonialism by saying that they were attempting to civilize or "Europeanize" the natives in their colonial countries. However, most colonial governments were extremely oppressive in issues of human rights as well as politically. In many of the colonies, there were revolts against the government. Some were peaceful and others involved violence.

At the beginning of the sixteenth century, European expansion was supported by many different motives like economic prosperity, expansion of trade and the spread Christianity. However, by the end of the nineteenth century the sole motive was economic prosperity. This became the focus of virtually all European countries at the end of the eighteenth and throughout the nineteenth centuries with the industrial revolution.

There was a tremendous movement in the 1800's in Europe that revolved around the manufacturing and exporting of goods from textiles to clothes made in large factories by usually underpaid, overworked laborers. As a result of the industrial revolution, European countries sought to expand their empires and colonize areas of Africa, Asia and the Americas that were rich in natural resources and raw materials. As a result this would boost their profits and give them much easier and cheaper access to the materials they needed to manufacture goods.

TITLE IX AND PROPORTIONALITY

In May of 001, Tim Wittman, the head wrestling coach at Bucknell University, gathered together the members of his wrestling team to break the news to them that the university was eliminating their sport from the athletic program. These young men had worked so hard to achieve what they wanted to do, when it suddenly slipped out form underneath them, wrestling was really over for them! One of these Bucknell wrestlers, Ben Chunko, whishes he would have known that the school had been considering cutting the program for five years (Fitzpatrick, 00). If he would have known, it would have saved him money, disappointment, and the panic of not knowing what to do (Bucknell, 001).

Also, at Marquette University, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the wrestling program was cut this past year. This program has gone through much obstacles to stay alive for almost ten years. Back in 1, the college was going to drop the program, because they didn't have enough money to back the wrestling team along with adding another women's program. All the funds for the team came from within the team. Every year they had to raise the money themselves; they raised between $60,000 and $100,000 every year and they never ran into a deficit. This burden of raising money was very hard on the wrestlers because it is hard enough without that burden to be a student-athlete. Finally in June of 001 the news came that the wrestling program was done. This cut was due to the college failing to increase the number of female athletes (Kinkhabwala, 00).

Bucknell and Marquette are just two of the many examples of male athletes having their athletic opportunities ripped away from them, forcing them to either transfer to another school or abandon the sport that they love. Some of these athletes are on scholarship, some are not. Since 17, 170 men's wrestling programs, 80 men's tennis programs, 70 men's gymnastics programs, and 45 men's track and field programs have been cut, as indicated by the General According Office (Goldberg, 00). That is over 80,000 athletic opportunities!Order custom research paper on Title IX and Proportionality

You may be thinking to yourselves that "surely these athletes must have done something wrong to deserve such a punishment." The plain and simple fact that their athletic programs were cut, is because they are male. Now that you see the devastating effects, let me first explain to you what is the cause, and then why it is such a problem, and what has been done by the victims of it.

It is called Tile IX, and it is part of the Educational Amendments of 17. It prohibits the discrimination in educational programs, including intercollegiate athletics, on the basis of sex. Although, you may be thinking to yourself, "Wow! That doesn't sound so bad, it sounds pretty fair." Well, seven years later, in 17, a policy was added to Title IX; the Intercollegiate Athletic Policy. This was created by a regulated bureaucracy, forcing schools to have an equal proportion of male and female athletes to male and female students enrolled in the school (Shontz, 00). So, say if a school has 40% males and 60% females, under Title IX they would be required to have 40% male athletes in their athletic programs and 60% female. Title IX has been devastating male sports programs at universities all over the nation. The legislation was created in order to end discrimination against women athletes, though, because of the unfair proportionality quota, it has created discrimination against the males instead of creating equality between the genders.

At Bucknell in 001, 41. percent of its athletes were women. However, 48.7 percent of the school's undergraduates were female. It didnt matter that the university sponsored 8 varsity sports, 14 each for men and women. It didnt matter that the university added womens golf and womens water polo in 18. It mattered only that the percentages didnt match, and as a result, the school decided it needed to have fewer male athletes, cutting wrestling (Shontz, 00).

There are also two other ways to be in compliance with the law; one is that an institution may demonstrate a history and continuing practice of program expansion for the underrepresented sex. And the second is that they may fully and effectively accommodate the interests and abilities of the underrepresented sex (Silver, 00). As you may be able to tell, both of those requirements are pretty hard to measure. So therefore, in order for an institution to be out of the danger of lawyers and lawsuits, they must meet the proportionality quota.

In order to satisfy this proportionality quota, tax-payer supported colleges eliminate male athletic programs that have hundreds of thousands of participants. They worry about being in compliance with these quotas, because if they are not they become susceptible to lawyers and lawsuits and could also lose funds. Athletic Directors have not been coming up with better solutions to the problem, they have been taking the easy way out and just axing men's minor sports.

Adding to this, is the problem of football making compliance with Title IX very difficult and almost impossible. Many feminists and supporters of Title IX are claiming that the closures of men's minor sports are due to men's football sucking up all the resources. This is not true! College football is usually the only profitable sport at most schools. The only thing that football does is cause proportionality to be very hard to reach, because football has so many male athletes on their rosters. This large number of male athletes causes the playing field to be tilted, when there is no female athletic program to balance it out. Schools like Miami, who have powerhouse football teams, are forced into cutting back dramatically on mens programs. For example, Miamis track program, where women are given 18 scholarships and men are only given two (Brady, 00).

Some may think that this problem could be solved by simply just adding women's teams without cutting men's teams. Yet this requires money and many schools lack the funds to meet such demands. Jim Leach, a Republican from Iowa, plans on introducing a bill to provide federal funding for college fellowships to help both men and women participants ("Title IX," 00). This would give more of a balance between both the men's and women's minor sports and larger sports like football and basketball.

Because wrestling has been probably the biggest victim of Title IX, the National Wrestling Coaches Association has filed a suit seeking to have proportionality overturned as a measure of Title IX compliance ("Title IX," 00). Although, the NWCA does not oppose Title IX itself, they only oppose the proportionality quotas. They do not want the change the basic premise of Title IX, which is that men and women must be afforded equal athletic opportunities.

As a female athlete and as the daughter of a wrestling coach, I feel that Title IX is not the correct way to impose gender equity in sports. I could not agree more with the wrestling coaches. I have been around wrestling my entire life and I hate to hear about college wrestling programs going down because of Title IX, yet I also hate to hear about women's athletics given less support than men's. According to The National Women's Law Center, in 17 there were 1,85 female athletes and in 001 there were 150,11. This is unquestionably a good thing because more females are participating in athletics. Yet this increase is at the expense of male athletes.

In conclusion, if this proportionality policy is not changed from Title IX, then many more men's sports, like Bucknell wrestling, will become no more. According to experts, who have looked at the effects of "proportionality" in college sports, there may be no male sports teams at the college level, except football, basketball and hockey within five to ten years.

Schools are being pushed into a corner and their response is to get rid of men's minor sports; along with this football doesn't help the situation either, because of it's weight on the side of male athletes. There definitely needs to be something done and I think that the National Wrestling Coaches Association is on the right track. Let me just leave you with this question If equality and elimination of discrimination are the main goals of Title IX, then why is it causing so much lost opportunity and destruction?

Values are as important on the job as they are outside the workplace. Research indicates that a vast majority of individuals leave their current job due to value conflicts with current work duties. This suggests a strong connection with a persons values and her/his commitment to a specific job. This suggest a strong connection with a persons values and her/his commitment to a specific job. Thus, it is important for you and for UTA to determine what your values are. If your personal values are not being validated in your current position, you should ask what, if anything, can be done about it? If nothing can be done, how will this affect your future career choices?

In thinking about your own values, or qualities you seek in a job, there are two points to keep in mind. First, your priorities are not written in stone. They are affected by many things going on in your life and thus should be reassessed periodically. For example, your feelings about the importance of time away from work will almost certainly depend on your current family situation or whether or not you are also in school. The importance you place on professional recognition may depend on what stage of your career you are in. In any case your priorities will affect career choices in significant ways.

Second, many organizations are examining the written and unwritten values they promote, and some are consciously shifting their expectation to accommodate the changing needs of their workforce. For example, the growth of two-career families has meant a dramatic decrease in the number of employees who are willing to relocate in order to move up. Again, the fit between your values and UTAs values are an important factor to be considered in your career development.

O Death, Where is Thy Sting?

One thing that is certain in mortal life is that it will come to an end for everyone. There are no exceptions; everyone will meet their end. Death will place its cold unmerciful hand into every mortal's life at the time appointed by God. Regardless of religion and beliefs, every person will give an account for their life on earth and what they have done or not done with Jesus Christ and his offer of salvation. John Donne addresses his final destination in his Holy Sonnet VI. This sonnet entitled "This is My Play's Last scene," is Donne's testimony of the peace he has found with the nearness of death in his life. Having an understanding of the author's difficult past will assist in properly interpreting this piece of literary art.

John Donne was born into a Roman Catholic household in London, England. Donne's father died when he was very young leaving he and his siblings to be raised by their mother. After having some difficulties in school, Donne secretly married the daughter of a nobleman and converted from Catholicism to Anglicanism. These choices made for an extremely trying and difficult life for the aspiring writer. More troubles following John Donne throughout the remainder of his life, including the death of his wife at a very young age. Awareness of these events helps to provide a deeper insight into the mind of the author and the perspective that he held on life. His difficult background can be heard through his work.

The theme of this poem is Donne addressing and accepting the nearing completion of his mortal life. Donne realized that his years left on earth were dwindling, and he wanted to clearly state what was going to happen to him upon the event of his death. The last portion of the poem speaks of the ultimate destination of sin and evil when it is finally put to rest. The separation from evil and death seems to give John Donne all the reason he needs to be at total peace in the face of death.

Write your O death, where is thy sting? research paper

This piece was written in the early 1600s to the general public. The work was a written testimony of the faith that Donne had in the security of his future in Jesus Christ. The wording used in the poem makes it clear that John was writing to an audience that he assumed was familiar with the biblical concept of redemption through Jesus Christ and an eternity in Heaven. The poem was written in the first person perspective. Donne was speaking about the inevitable nearness of death. This may have been an occasion where Donne was writing down his own thoughts and reflections on life rather than trying to create a literary masterpiece.

The format of the piece is fourteen straight lines that are not divided in any way. The poem has a nice even flow as it is read through. Every sentence rhymes with at least one other sentence in the poem. The lines range from to 1 syllables, according to their placement in the piece. The language used in the poem is relatively simply and Donne avoids the use of hard to understand or obscure words. Donne cleverly uses simple language to create a very intricate and detailed picture in a very short time. Some of the language found in this Holy Sonnet has an old English flavor, showing the age of the piece.

Several words and phrases are found in this sonnet that seem to be of particular importance and significance. The first word that stands out is found repeatedly in lines one through four. "This is my play's last scene; here heavens appoint / My pilgrimages last mile; and my last race / Idly, yet quickly run, hath this last pace, / My span's last inch, my minutes last point" (Donne 1-4). The word "last" is repeatedly used in these lines, giving it undeniable significance to the setting of the poem. Without question, Donne is referring to the completion of his life. Other significant words used in this piece include "death, earth-born, hell," and "evil" (Donne 5, 10, 11, 1). These powerful words assist in setting the context for the poem.

Holy Sonnet VI opens with Donne explaining the situation in which he finds himself. He is standing at deaths door, acknowledging the end of his mortal life. The poem then moves into an account of his death as he foresees it, and tells of the effects on his mortal body. The author ends the piece by telling that death, and sin and evil will all be put to rest and away from him as he ascends into the presence of God. This conclusion offers a sense of closure and a feeling of satisfaction for the reader.

This poem can be easily applied to daily Christian living as believers are constantly tried and tested through both life experiences and the experience of death in their own lives. John Donne clearly had his faith in Jesus Christ regarding his future on the other side of the touch of death. Donne had applied the principle found in I Corinthians 155. This text says, "O death, where is thy sting? O grave where is thy victory?" (Bible). John Donne was ready and willing to face death, knowing that his fate was held in the hands of the Lord Jesus Christ and that he would be separated from evil forever. It should be every Christians desire to be in a place where they are also ready to face death knowing that they are in the Lord's watchful care.

Ever been stuck between a rock and a hard place? That's how I felt being the one in my group of friends that had no college under their belt. It was never a goal of mine to fall behind the crowd, it just sort of happened. When we sit around talking and everyone has a sharp view of their future in sight, discussing graduate school or law school, or amazing internships that will lead to the high paying jobs they dreamed of, I can't help but feel left out. So I decided it was time for me to take a step in a different direction and enroll in college.

Anxious is one way of describing how I came to college. Everyone is always in a hurry and I'm not much different. In a society filled with fast food restaurants, cell phones, highways, and broadband internet, its hard to want to take your time. We're all trying to get as much done in this short life as we can. I can't help but feel the same way. The anxiety and anticipation of having a college degree is killing me. I don't want to wait four, or even two years. So I'm taking as many classes as I can, as often as I can, to fullfil the requirements of my degree program as quickly as possible. I have never been one of those people who enjoy studying or doing schoolwork. I would rather be using my time to get the immediate reward that my hard work deserves. Good grades and knowledge never appealed to me as a real "reward," unlike a nice paycheck at the end of the week. That's probably why I fell behind in the first place.

Excitement is another feeling that sort of unexpectedly came over me as the first day of college neared. I'm not sure how to explain it. A feeling of accomplishment was already present weeks before I stepped foot on campus. I had never felt it before, in any of my other three ventures to college. Don't get me wrong, I'm not disappointed in the least. It was just very odd to be excited for school. Me, excited to go to class? To write a paper? To study for a test? To take a final exam? The rush of blood to my head was overwhelming, unexpected, but certainly appreciated, however it came about. Hopefully this excitement will last me the whole way through school this time around.

I'm normally not one to get nervous about anything, but I couldn't help it. What if I don't do well? Will my parents hate me forever? Am I destined to be a failure? All these questions flying around made me a nervous wreck. I was losing sleep in anticipation of receiving my grades already. I really needed to show my parents, and more importantly, myself, that I was not only capable of going back to school for a fourth time, but I was capable of doing well and succeeding. Looking back on it, I guess there was no need to worry or get nervous, but at the time I couldn't help it. Help with essay on How i came to college

School has started, a summer session has gone by. I'm moving forward in my life and for the first time in a while, I feel really good about where I am and what I'm doing. The anxiety, excitement and nervousness all came together to help motivate me in a way that I never really expected. I'm finally getting a sense of satisfaction and reward from succeeding in school. It's nice to have finally gotten myself out of that hard place.

Introduction

The first time I stepped into San Sebastian, I felt no special connection towards it. I only recall mama pointing out its special beauty. This comment, not empirical observation, created a subconscious regard that this church equaled beauty.

When I reached second year high school, I developed a deeper love for the Catholic faith, and with it came a reverential regard for Churches. It was at this time that my regard for San Sebastian's beauty moved beyond architecture into personal attachment. It became part of me because it was an expression of what was most important to me my faith. This personal attachment drew me to visit this church with more attention and reflection.

The Gothic Ceilings and Stone Walls

The high ceilings and cold, as if air-conditioned, interior are primarily the two aspects that made an impact on me. This is possibly because it is how the body feels that strikes a human person first. The high arched ceilings were produced in the Gothic style. These structures were built using steel and stone. Belgian Steel and Stone were also the main materials used in building the church. These materials most probably are responsible for the cold climate within San Sebastian.

The high arched gothic ceilings create a prayer space that is solemn and quiet, making it easier for internal recollection. The cool interiors allow for a more intense concentration, by eradicating the distraction caused by tropical heat.

Furthermore, the materials of steel and stone allow this church to survive tropical calamities such as typhoons and storms.

The Gothic Façade and Stained Glass windows

Looking at San Sebastian from the outside, one cannot miss the Gothic Turrets. It is closer to French Architecture than the commonly found Spanish-inspired Architecture. In fact, it makes the structure look similar to the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

Another Impressive part of the San Sebastian Church are the Stained Glass Windows. It is said to have been produced in Germany and was shipped to the Philippines. Its main themes are the mysteries of the Rosary, which makes the Basilica gain Marian character. Another aspect which makes it like the Basilica of Notre Dame (Our Lady in English) in France.

What makes the stained glass windows beautiful are the bright colors used and the intricate details. An instance of the latter is the details of the faces of the characters are clearly seen.

A Little History

The Church was built in the late nineteenth century after an earthquake destroyed the original stone structure. The Augustinian Recollect Fathers commissioned the architect, Palacios to design it. It was built in Belgium, and brought piece by piece to the Philippines. The country where it was made explains the French influence because of its proximity to former Gaul territory.

Criticism

One article which I read claims that people do not go to the San Sebastian Church because of its Religious significance but because of its Architectural grandeur. I agree that the Church is an Architectural masterpiece but insist that this encourages the Religious significance of the structure. I insist on this because its being called an Architectural masterpiece indicates that it is beautiful, therefore a close reflection of God.

1. Text snippet

"Somehow, if I fought Cecil I would let Atticus down. Atticus so rarely asked Jem and me to do something for him, I could take being called a coward for him." Pg. 87

Reason for choice

I chose this snippet of text because I thought it showed how much she cared about what her father said and thought about her. Scout thought highly about her father, and it also shows that scout is maturing and not letting her fists take care if her problems. It also shows how her character is building from an immature little girl to a somewhat mature girl.

Do my essay on To Kill a Mockingbird CHEAP !

.

That was the only time I ever heard Atticus say it was a sin to do something, and I asked Miss Maudie about it.

"Your father's right," She said. "Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." PG. 10

I picked this snippet because it shows that most people in Maycomb County feels about people and or objects/ animals that don't commit a sin to anybody but instead they provide them with help, tutoring, music, ect. And for that reason is why they will not comment a sin against this person or objects/ animals.

.

It was long past my bedtime and I was growing quite tired… Pg. 177

This is showing a really big thing here. It shows that Scout is becoming more and more self-disciplined and that she is maturing more as the story goes on.

4.

"She was white, and she tempted a Negro. She did something that in our society is unspeakable she kissed a black man. Not an old Uncle, but a strong young Negro man…" PG

This quote shows how the people back then treated African Americans and how they strongly felt about they're being a romance between them and a white man/lady. And compared to today's society which will allow this to happened and I think it is ok as long the couple cares for each other.

5.

Jem was sprawled on the sofa reading Popular Mechanics. He looked up. "It ain't right. He didn't kill anybody even if he was guilty. He didn't take anybody's life."

"You know rape's a capital offence in Alabama," said Atticus.

"Yessir, but the jury didn't have to give him death- if they wanted to they could've gave him twenty years." PG. 51

This clipping shows how Jem and Scout is being put in the middle of this whole jury trial and how this affected not only Tom's life but Atticus and is children, and Calpurnia and her community.

6.

"There's noting more sticking to me than a low-grade white man who'll take advantage of a Negro's ignorance. Don't fool your slaves- it's all adding up and one of these days we're going to pay the bill for it…" PG. 5

Atticus at this point was under a lot of stress and I fell mad at him because he is putting down the very people he defended every day. I believe he is becoming a trader to himself and the race he supported.

Text chunk

"And so quite, respectable, humble Negro who had the unmitigated temerity to 'feel sorry' for a white woman has had to put his word against two white people's. I need not remind you of their appearance and conduct and the stand- you saw for yourselves. The witnesses for the state, with the exception of the sheriff of Maycomb County, have presented themselves to you gentleman, to this court, in the cynical confidence that their testimony would not be doubted, confident that you gentleman would go along with them on the assumption- the evil assumption- that all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings, that all Negro men are not to be trusted around our woman…" PG.

This really makes me sick to think that this race of people was domed even before the trial started. Tom had no chance if every one was going to think and know to themselves that he and his friends will lie on the stand. Tom, if wanted to get past this wall of predigest he would have to of worked of a well respected white person, but he had no chance anyway.

.

Atticus wheeled around. His hand dug into his pockets. "Heck, cant you even try to see it my way? You've got children of your own, but I'm older than you. When mine are grown I'll be an old man if I'm still around, but right now I'm- if they don't trust me they won't trust anybody. Jem and Scout know what happened. If they here me saying downtown something different happened- Heck, I won't have them any more. I can't live one way in town and another in my home." PG. 15

Just for a second, look on how he ended this paragraph. He said "In my home" this would tell you a lot. This tells me that he is and he knows that he is the head of that house. The whole paragraph tells me that his children are all he has after his wife died. He is at a time in his life were we needs his children and they need him.

Setting

The author reveals the setting a little by little, and only on a need to know basics. I think this is a nice twist to the novel because unlike other novels where you get all the setting at once you get it peace by peace. Like when Scout and Jem went to the town on the night that they moved Tom Atticus sat at the jail and when the kids went to go see their dad the author slowly described the setting. Really neat!

THE HOLOCAUST

I chose the topic of The Holocaust because I like to expound on the truth of pain/suffering of Jews and others caused by the Nazis. The Holocaust is one of the greatest examples of human genocide. This story will include the racism of Adolf Hitler and the characteristics of

The Nazis party. The Nazis party was really conceived about making Germany a world power. The Concentration Camp System was one of the most horrible experiences that took place in the holocaust.

In 1, the Nazis began to build concentration camps. The Germans added camps in other camps in these countries Poland and Austria. They filled these new camps with political opponents, prisoners of war,

and Jews. Also any one who posed a threat to them.

The beginning of the terror had begun with Dr. Death (Mangalo) experimenting on the Jews. Freedom of bondage began when World War II started, and when the alignment of the countries came in to place. This is one of the greatest wars when the countries work together as one to stop the act of racism. The survivors will tell their horrendous experience(s) that took place in the camp of death.

Hitler's first offcial act against the Jews was a boycott of Jewish businesses and shops starting April 1, 1. But some Germans refused to go along and that day to boycott was canceled in twenty-four hours. The Nais began to attack the Jewish communities the night of November , 18. They burned over one thousand synagogues and wreacked over seven thousand businesses. Many Jews have committed suicide and many Jewish families had escape from Germany.

Hitler's Plan

"Adolf Hitler has been called a monster, the devil, the Antichrist, a demonic dictator, a megalomaniac, a spellbinder, and the most evil genius of the twentieth century." (Helen Strahinich 8) Adolf Hitler was born on April 0, 188, the fourth child of Alois Schickelgruber and Klara Hitler in the Austrian town of Braunau. Two of his siblings died from diphtheria when they were children, and one died shortly after birth. When Adolf was three years old, the family moved to Passau, along the Inn river on the German side of the border. A brother, Edmund was born two years later.

Who were the Nazi party within Germany's Society? Hitler had joined the Nazi party in 11, when it was still called the German Workers' Party. At that time it was still a small group. Soon, Hitler took charge

of the party and developed his skills as a speaker and organizer.

By July 1, 1, Hitler's vote was 1.7 million and now the Nazis party was the largest in Germany. On January 0,1, he was named chancellor of Germany by the President Von Hindenberg. The Nazis had planed their final solution to get rid of the Jews by committing complete genocide.

The Road To Destruction

"For many years, Nazis terrorized their opponents, breaking up meetings and beating up members of other parties. The Nazis moved quickly to crush the opposition once and for all. They roamed the streets, attacking and murdering citizens. Hitler also abolished free speech, free press, and the to assembly. As a result, many Germany joined the Nazi party. Even worse, many Germans were willing to go along with whatever Hitler asked. Germany provided fertile soil for Hitler's violent anti-Semitism. Hitler's ideas and policies grew out of a long history of violence and hatred toward European Jews." (Helen Strahinich 18)

This article caught my attention due to the fact that I have been a substitute teacher for two years. When I decided that vet school was not for me after two years of undergraduate study in Zoology, I wanted to go back to my dream. I wanted to teach. Instead of jumping into a curriculum without knowing whether I wanted to continue it or not, again, I became a sub instead. I absolutely loved it. I was able to experience a variety of learning settings. I taught everywhere from Preschool centers and day cares to high schools. I truly felt like a natural in the classroom. I had calls every day from schools in Auburn, Opelika, Lochapoka, etc… I was really excited that they wanted me back. After a while, I was primarily at Drake Middle School in Auburn. It was a nightmare that turned into a dream. I had bars on my windows and doors. I had a two-digit code on the phone in my room that dialed directly to the police. The police were never more than two minutes away. I was terrified. The kids entered my first period class kind of rambunctious and excited to have a sub. As soon as I started class, by calling roll, I stated the rules up front, and talked to them like real people, not just kids. Before the end of that day, I had kids coming to me with personal problems, and needing help in other classes. The kids looked up to me because I was young and new. I really loved those kids. My point here is that substituting should not just be used for a way out of your current job. It should however be used to find out if you want to teach. If that sub really stinks at the job, they will know soon enough. Teaching is not a job for just anybody, you really have to love what you are doing. You can hate your job as a computer technician and curse computers all day long. If you are a teacher that hates their job, you need to find something else to do. I think McDonalds is always hiring and would love to have a new employee.

I agree with the statements in the article saying that substitutes should have to have more than just a high school education to be a full time sub. I don't think that many school districts would hire an extremely uneducated, ignorant person. You have to have common sense at least. I think that all subs should have to go through training before entering a classroom. I say this hypocritically being that I only had one orientation with Auburn City Schools. I was in orientation with three other women. After orientation, two of them changed their minds after seeing video tapes of the classroom. But, that is great that they did not wait until they were in the real life situation.

Watching video tapes of the classroom, and being thrown in a real life situation are totally different. I don't think video tapes bring in the emotion enough. Walking into the school, finding the office, talking with the principal, and getting into your classroom, cannot be expressed. It is definitely overwhelming the first time. Nervous excitement has to be the best and worst feeling ever. For me, everything calmed down the first time my students walked in the room and eventually sat down after being told to do so.

Kids, especially high school, walk into the room saying "YES!" and "Alright, we got a sub!" That really does not make you feel good the first time. After you establish the initial greeting and roll call, you give them the assignment. If they get out of hand, remind them of the consequences when their teach returns. Always let them know that if they finish early they cannot talk, if they disrupt class, find a dictionary and tell them to start copying. It may sound really mean, but it works every time. Once they know that you are not going to let them run you over, they respect you and then the friendships begin. It is wonderful how little minds work. This is just my rule of thumb for anyone who wants to be a substitute, but there are many other opinions out there. I think that there is definitely a problem with not having enough subs. There is an even greater shortage of substitutes that will work with multi handicapped children or learning/behavior disordered children. There are so few subs that agree to work with Special Ed that teachers can rarely get off work for even severe cases. I have seen Special Ed teachers come to school the day of their mother's funeral because it was impossible to get a substitute for that day. To me, there is a very high demand for subs in Auburn City Schools. The list probably has less than fifteen subs on it for fall semester right now. I am currently employed with Auburn City Schools as a substitute. I just recently added my name to the list. I received a phone call asking me to sub for Auburn Early Ed, so I contacted the main office and did everything I needed to do to get back on the list. Even though I am in school full-time, I still want to experience the classroom. I am also known as the Special Ed sub for Auburn, that makes me feel good.

JANE ADDAMSA SOCIAL REFORMER

History has long since been recording events that have shaped the society in which we live. However, most of these events have occurred at the hands of a male, and they have had a direct impact on our position as a world leader. Yet, if one looks hard enough and long enough, other important people and events stand out. Jane Addams, and her work for the betterment of all mankind, shines as an example of such a person who single handily impacted the world in which she lived. It is interesting then to look at the woman behind the history. Knowing about her life, her works, and her famous "firsts," lets a student of history understand her position and its impact.

Just seven months prior to the Civil war, Jane Addams was born in Cedarville, Illinois. The date was September 6, 1860. Her mother died when Jane was only two; Mary, her oldest sister, took over her care. Jane was born with a spinal problem unique to doctors of the time. "This problem caused Jane to walk pigeon--toed with her head tilted slightly to one side."(Theme 1) Since children of this time were taught to walk with their toes turned out, Jane gave the grown-ups cause for worry. Jane did not stay motherless for long. Her father married the widow of William Haldeman. William had been her father, John Huy Addams's, best friend. When her new mother arrived, she also brought her two boys. The oldest one, Harry, did not spend the time with Jane that George, the younger one, did. George was only a few months younger than Jane, and he proved to be a great companion to her. He had a great impact on her ideals of life. Jane, too, was apparently very close to her father. "John Huy Addams was a successful businessman and politician who tried to pass on to his daughter his ideals of hard work, achievement, democracy, and equality."(Important 1) "Growing up a Quaker, she lived the traditional beliefs of hospitality. At night everyone's bedroom door was closed and the hall would be dark. The front door of the house would be unlocked." (Theme 1) These ideals, and close family/stepfamily relationship stayed with her throughout her college years at Rockford Female Seminary. "Rockford Female Seminary had reinforced what Jane had learned at home from her father and two mothers Christian ethics, the importance of being good and doing good, a broad role for women, a stress on accomplishing great things."(Levine 16 & ) Upon completion of her studies at Rockford, Jane enrolled in Women's Medical College. Her education here would not be completed due to a serious ailment to her already frail back. After surgery and six months in bed, she went to Europe to find her purpose in life. During her travels through several European cities, she had a glimpse of a lifestyle that was opposite to the one of privilege that she knew as she grew up. "She visited Toynbee Hall, the very first community center established to tackle the problems of poverty in the cities."(Theme ) Upon her return from Europe, and deeply moved by the experiences, she took an apartment in Chicago with her friend, Ellen Starr. These two women began a campaign to make a difference in the lives of nineteenth century people.Cheap University Papers on JANE ADDAMS—A SOCIAL REFORMER

Jane and Ellen took it upon themselves to change a system that treated people differently based on their position in society. Obtaining support was not as difficult as it might first appear. The two young ladies were sincere in their quest to help the less fortunate to a better life. This sincerity was obvious to benefactors as they got behind the women. Their first exposure to the world of philanthropy was with Armour Mission. "Armour Mission, a non-sectarian educational institution, was founded in 1886. It included a kindergarten, library, literary societies, and lectures, a free medical dispensary, a kitchen garden, a sewing or workroom for women, nurseries and bathrooms."(Farrell 5-54) During this time, Jane continued to strive towards reaching and assisting more people. Her works gave her the opportunity to speak to large, powerful groups who took up her cause. But, Jane did not just do the "speaking." She would not hesitate to get personally involved. "Often, Jane would accompany truant agents on their rounds to discover the areas of the city where school absenteeism was highest. She also was escorted to areas of particularly heavy need by relief officers from the Charity Organization Society." (Farrell 55) When the organizations took note of her efforts support quickly followed as she attempted to open the now famous Hull House. Endorsements from the various groups, both philanthropic and religious, along with those who were already working with immigrants, allowed her to make her dreams of providing help for "the starvation struggle which makes up the life of at least half of the human race."(Farrell 56-5) Hull House evolved slowly. The first activities were very basic. They started with a reading party. Then providing hot lunches, child care, and tutoring were added to the party activities. Later, Hull House was listed to have had Chicago's first public baths, gymnasium, public playground, little theater, citizenship preparation classes, public kitchen, college extension courses, free art exhibits, public swimming pool, boy scout troop, Hull House attempted to provide whatever was needed. Addams believed that it allow people to help put an end to the "great struggle which makes up the life of at least half of the human race." (Farrell 56-5) But providing for the lack of necessities was not all she did. Addams worked to develop a community spirit that pulled people together to get the necessary things accomplished for themselves. Better streets, safe parks and playgrounds, and public baths were some of the things that the immigrants were soon working together to achieve. Hull House made a difference in the neighborhood around 800 South Halsted Street. Yet, its impact was beginning to have a "rippling" effect on all of the country. "Her work toward social improvements in Chicago, coupled with the work of other reformers, marked the beginning of the Progressive movement in America. This movement sought to overcome the often dehumanizing effects of rapid industrialization through a variety of political, economic, an social reforms."(Theme 4) The experiences gained in Hull House gave the clients a beginning as well. They found strength in themselves, and they began a powerful reform movement as well. Their projects changed a great deal of the juvenile system and impacted protection for the immigrants' rights.

Miss Addams, who never married, definitely made a name for herself in an accepted manner. She did not try to be something society frowned upon, she just made things happen by her works and her willingness to get involved. Jane has been credited with writing several books and other literary works. Yet she was not always involved in the usual things that the women of her day involved themselves in doing. She was the garbage inspector for the 1th Ward on the west side of Chicago in 185. She served as a member of the Chicago Board of Education. Jane worked to establish the NAACP, and she was the 1st Vice-President of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. The starting of the ACLU was also one of the credits given to Addams. She also founded and served as a ten year president for the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. Since the decisions of the government impacted the lives of those she attempted to help, politics were of interest to her as well. She had the opportunity and honor to second the nomination of Theodore Roosevelt for President at the Progressive Party Convention. Recognition for her works reached a new height when she became the first American woman recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 11.

Although Jane Addams died of cancer in 15, many of her endeavors are still evident today, Hull House, as a major complex, has been leveled and it's now part of the University of Illinois campus, but its traditions and impact live on today. "In June of 167, Dr. Murray H. Nelligan, of the National Park Service unveiled a bronze plaque beside the door (of a remaining portion of the original complex) designating the building as one of 750 national historic landmarks and said, 'In my opinion, none of the national historical landmarks better signifies the achievements of the past while pointing the way to a brighter future for our cities than does Hull House.'"(Chicago Pub. 1) When one thinks of Jane Addams and her legacy of help for whoever needed it, however they needed it, and whenever they needed it, it brings to mind a current belief used today. If you give a man a fish, he can eat for a day. If you teach him how to fish, he can eat for a lifetime. Jane Addams was indeed a great woman, person, and American. "She built her reputation as the country's most prominent woman through her writing, her settlement work, and her international efforts for world peace."(Biographical 1) Jane Addams definitely has earned her place in the history books and in the hearts of countless Americans.

I really think that John Mohawk is a smart man that knows what he is talking about, but its not that Christopher Columbus isn't a bad person I just don't like it when people say, that he is the one that we live in America today, because there was already Native Americans living there and living fine. Columbus ruined the Native Americans lives, because they were swarmed to the west and out of their homes thanks to Columbus. Columbus also made very unfair trades with the Native Americans. He gave them regular old objects for farming secrets, and helpful farming objects. Now people have developed the stereotype that all Native Americans are savages and greedy.

Columbus first of all was just crossing the ocean to find the find a short cut to somewhere else. He found North America by accident and claims that he discovered it himself. Many people say that many, many, many times and it drive's me nuts.

Columbus was a man, but didn't act like one. He said he discovered America and him and only him. I just wish he could have been a good person and said I was just the first person from Europe to visit North America, and that's it!

The Art of Annoyance

Its a fine line to walk between the completely bumbling and the only slightly annoying. For those of us who observe these kinds of creatures daily, it often boggles the mind just how they can be so completely aggravating. Well the process is simple really, you only need to make a few small changes in your lifestyle to join this select group who are the talk of the community and the one man show at every party.

Custom Essays on Art of Annoyance: Satire How To.

Start at the begining and lets resculpte your daily activities. Remember it is not so much that you must make large changes it is that you must be repetative and stubborn in your annoying nature. So, you wake to a beautiful Monday morning ready for work and busting at the seems to join your comrades at the salt mines. You may notice as you exit your house that your meticulously hung Christmas decorations are still weathering the elements. Pay no mind to the fact that it is mid July and the neighboors are starting to give you funny looks. On your drive to work remember to honk and wave at complete strangers, attention on yourself is key to sucsess. Cruise mindfully in the right hand lane with your left blinker on, for about 15 miles. Only at the last moment make the correction to swerve across multiple lanes of traffic into one of the 'Full Service' booths to pay your toll. Just for fun, neglect to see the multiple one dollar bills in your pocket and insist to the attendant that you pay with a one hundred dollar note. After such a good time on the road, exit your car in the parking area and setup orange cones in the middle of the drive-thru to throw off your buddies who are pulling in behind you. Theres a reaction you won't forget! Now you are in the elevator, making your way up to your office, make it a point to touch strangers. A simple poke on the arm or in the back will draw heads throughout the crowd. If somone becomes cross with your playful attitude just remind them that 'I was just messing around man!'. Before exiting the elevator, push all the buttons. Surely people will now understand that you are a playful soul and will indeed want to be around you!

Now the workplace, a vast conduit of social interaction. The perfect setting to share you crazy antics with coworkers. It is a must that in large presentations you set the tint on your computer so that all the images are green, and insist to others that you "like it that way". Durring these long presentations you may feel the hyped mood begin to slack. To pick up the spirit again it is suggested that you drum on every available surface. Begining lightly and builing to a cresendo of snares and 'air symbols'. Pay no mind to the naysayers who are now giving dirty looks, return the look with a grin that say you know somehting they don't. The oportunties in the office are almost endless when it comes to showing your joviality. For example, when Susan in accounting asks for that Product Frontier report to be complied and ready for export, staple the pages together in the center. The look on her face will be priceless when the forms are delivered. No doubt now you are wondering how you should conduct yourself around the watercooler or lunch area. Purely conversation oriented settings can be tricky, as you will loose most of you physical humor. Answer any question that is ask to you in the form of another question. That tatic will keep them guessing, and will surely crack a few smiles from your more easy going colliges. Lie about obvious things, like the time of day or how the weather is. No one will question you as they will be amazed with your dizzying intelect for farce. And if somone is to challenge your behavior simply reply to all attacks with 'thats what YOU think'. And of course the most important rule of all for the work place, ALWAYS shake with your left hand.

In time the day will draw to a close and you will bid farewell to your friends in the office, gather up your cones around the parking lot and again visit your favorite toll booth attendant. But now is not the time to let your guard down. You have just been pulled over by a friendly officer out on patrol. Make sure to greet this noble peace kepper with, "Hey, you must've been doin' about 125 mph to keep up with me!" before he has his foot out of the cruiser. When he comes up to your car say, "License and registration, please" right when he says it. Crack a smile to let him know your playful intent with such a comment. Refer to the officer by his first name and try to build a good repore with him as you discuss your violation; perhaps even ask to see his gun. If all goes well you will not have to take a trip to the downtown lockup.

So solider your mission for the day is completed. You have shown how a true fool acts and have enlightened the world to the nature of your character. This is the line you must walk to truly understand the art of annoyance. There are those that will scoff and laugh at your attempts to find this higher existance, but pay no mind. Take this gem of wisdom with you out into the world, use it wisely and trust in your abilities. I have no doubt in my mind that many of you are using these tactics now as you read this. Infact, I am sure there are plenty annoying people out there already.
