Carson McCuller's story A Tree. A rock. A Cloud imparts a truth about human life that is easily ignored in our chaotic existence the human tendency to be hasty. In reading McCuller's story, one cannot help but be moved by its tragic quality and somber tone. The old man's tale of betrayal and lost love is sad. It elicits pity and compassion, but the lesson he learns from his experience which he imparts to the boy, and the reader, leaves both parties, the reader and the boy, pensive and, strangely, serene. What the man conveys is a difficult lesson learned, and the rather indirect way the older man reports his lesson suggests that the boy will have to learn it for himself, probably through experience, just as the older man has. On the surface, the old man's tale appears a story about the "science" of love, but with careful examination it transforms to a sort of parable about humans predisposition to rush.

Female circumcision is a controversial topic in society. Awareness of its existence and seriousness has been increasing over time internationally. Oftentimes people do not know what it is or what it means symbolically, but simply see it as an act against women. That view captures the view possessed by most in the United States, but to the people who practice female circumcision it has deep symbolic meaning. Female circumcision is very scarce in the United States; therefore the problems associated with female circumcision do not directly involve the United States. Yet, the United States has felt the need to get involved in all of the actions taking place to try and stop female circumcision.

The United States sees female circumcision as female subordination. The women of these cultures using this practice see it differently. They see the practice as something they have to do for themselves and for their lineage. Essentially the procedure is all part of growing up and fulfilling obligations. It should only be considered subordination of women if the women of the societies feel as though they are being surpressed and missing a part of life that they should be experiencing. The women of the United States enjoy a lot more than the women of these societies; therefore, making their lives very different but not necessarily wrong. Female circumcision is a part of their culture and a part of who they are and the United States has no right to try and take that from them. It is a fact that other countries are also intervening and entering the fight to stop circumcision for the conflicts in culture but also because of medical reasons. The procedures are generally not safe and can cause many serious problems following the procedure and throughout the remainder of the woman's life. The emphasis is on one's culture. There is not one group of people or person who can tell an individual what to believe or how to think. These women are fulfilling a part of their culture and a norm of their social construct.

September 5, 00 Informing Ourselves to Death

Technology will be the end of the human race. The further into the future we go the closer we come to destroying ourselves. People never needed this much information in the Middle Ages, they knew exactly where they came from and where they were going. The more information we have, the more problems we tend to have. The human race has come to a point where there is so much information to be had that no one is quite sure what is relevant and what is irrelevant, therefore there is confusion in many people where as they are not sure if they are coming or going-figuratively speaking. Then comes the computer which only supplies us with yet more information, and with more information comes more questions, which in turn comes yet more information. However we can't blame computers for they do only as they are programmed. Programmed by people who have this constant need for information, which in turn will be our downfall.

This article reminds me a lot of the series of movies called "The Planet of the Apes". Where these people leave Earth in a spacecraft and somehow end up traveling in time to what they discover to be the same planet Earth. Which people who had too much information found a way to make a big enough bomb to destroy the human race and set the apes as the dominant species! Sometimes I have this feeling that this could actually happen. As time goes by it just seams through information, that there are more and more people who know how to build bombs, where as we wouldn't have this much of a problem if the information wasn't out there. If a person wanted to they could even go onto the internet and download information on anything including plans on how to make a bomb. Do we honestly need this much information? Do people realize how much this information is hurting the human race? How long do you think that we will all last if this distribution of information continues?

As we look back in history, we can see many of the events that have brought a curse upon African Americans. One of which was the trading of slaves. Slaves in the 1800's were taken from Africa, or many times, sold to the slave traders by rival tribes, and brought to America. Once they arrived in America, if they arrived in America, which brings out the point of the horrible conditions in which they were shipped to America, they were put up on display at the slave auctions. At this time, slave owners, or those wishing to purchase them, would make bid's on them, as if they were just property. Slaves were not only purchased for money, but were also bartered for rum. The slave traders would sail from the Caribbean, where they got the rum, to the coast of West Africa, and they would then give the natives there bottles of rum, in return for the slaves. How many slaved were braught like this is hard to tell but according to

"The Atlantic slave trade operated from the 1500s to the mid-1800s. No one knows how many Africans were enslaved during this period. The most reliable estimates suggest about 10 million blacks" .

Along with the trading of the African slaves, came the denial of two of the founding promises of our nation. That was the denial of freedom, and the denial of equal rights. Slaves were not free; they were just property, owned by the plantation owners and private families. It didn't matter that there were more of them, because they were looked upon as dumb. They were never seen as equals; therefore they were never given equal rights. In the time of slavery, slaves weren't allowed to learn to read, or write. They weren't allowed to live there own lives. It was this lack of freedom, which also brought about the denial of their chance for equal rights. And even with the abolition of slavery, it still took many years, of hardships, and trials to even begin receiving their equal rights for which many Americans take for granted.

The economy of the early American Colonies was primarily agricultural. Particularly in the south were plantation were constructed to yield large amounts of tobacco, rice, and sugar all which had a high demand in England. These plantation were worked by English indentured servants, however toward the end of the1600s there was a big push to use African slaves. This change was brought on by a combination of rebellious English workers, affordable African slaves, and African slaves farming abilities. Fist of all, the problem the plantation owners had with English indentured servants was they were not slaves. After a specified amount of time they were to be set free and given land. During the 1600s thousands of indentured servants flocked to these plantation with the hope of acquiring a piece of land. When they found that their was not land to be given they started to revolt. Nathaniel Bacon led one of the most famous of these revolts.

Custom Essays on slavery

In 1676 Bacon and a thousand other frustrated indentured servants led a revolt in Jamestown. They attacked the Indians and chased the governor, William Berkeley, out of Jamestown. Although Bacon died and the revolt failed, they cause fear to the colony plantation owners. Plantation owners in didn't want to bring more indentured servant to their colony to led a bigger revolt. This caused them to look towards Africa as a means of getting a less threatening workforce.

Another major factor that contributed to the growing slave trade with Africa was the Royal African Company losing its African slave trade monopoly in 168. This allowed anyone to enter into the profitable slave trading business. Slave prices were dramatically lowered do to this new competition. Also with the increase of slave traders came the increase in the number of African slaves brought to America. In the decade after 1700 over ten thousand Africa slaves were imported to the American colonies.

Lastly, one of the most profitable crops grown in the southern American colonies, especially Carolina was rice. The English colonists were inexperienced in rice cultivations; however they found that West Africans had been growing rice in Africa for hundreds of years. Colonists in Carolina would pay a lot of money for an African slave experienced in growing rice.

Not only did African slaves know how the grow rice they also had the rare ability to be able to work in the fields. However, rice is grown in large swampy fields prone to mosquitoes carrying malaria. The African slaves were native to a similar climate they developed immunities to the disease. This made them better able rice growers, which were vigorous sought after by the colonial plantations.

Once the slaves started having children, the demand for slaves dropped while the market for selling slaves and their children went up. This was another way they kept slaves in slavery. If a person was born to a slave, he or she was automatically born into a life of slavery. The owners would also keep their slaves ignorant. Slavery is one of this country's most debated topics. In America's history slavery and economics go hand in hand? The issue of slavery has been debated between the North and South since before the colonization of the thirteen colonies.

The debate over the economic advantages of slavery in the South has raged ever since the first slaves began working in the cotton fields of the Southern States. The economic systems that dominated slavery reflected the transitions in Americas economic system. Initially, mercantilist views characterized the conduct of the slave trade. Between 1774 and 1804 all the northern states undertook to abolish slavery. At the outbreak of the Revolution, the United States contained about half a million slaves. Between the North and the South, on the eve of the Civil War the country held almost 4 million slaves, confined entirely to the South.

Southern slaves were viewed in economic terms of labor to capital. While the ownership of slaves was a source of pride in plantation owners, this interdependence created a vicious cycle of rashness that caused slave owners to become irrational.

ISDN vs. Cable

The Internet is a network of networks that interconnects computers around the world, supporting both business and residential users. In 14, a multimedia Internet application known as the World Wide Web became popular. The higher bandwidth needs of this application have highlighted the limited Internet access speeds available to residential users. Even at 56 Kilobits per second (Kbps)the fastest residential access commonly available at the time of this writingthe transfer of graphical images can be frustratingly slow. My paper examines two enhancements to existing residential communications infrastructure Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) and cable television networks upgraded to pass bi-directional digital traffic (Cable Modems). It analyzes the potential of each enhancement to deliver Internet access to residential users. It validates the hypothesis that upgraded cable networks can deliver residential Internet access more cost-effectively, while offering a broader range of services.

When a home is connected to the Internet, residential communications infrastructure serves as the last mile of the connection between the home computer and the rest of the computers on the Internet. This paper describes the Internet technology involved in that connection. This paper does not discuss other aspects of Internet technology in detail. Rather, it focuses on the services that need to be provided for home computer users to connect to the Internet.

ISDN and upgraded cable networks will each provide different functionality (e.g. type and speed of access) and cost profiles for Internet connections. It might seem simple enough to figure out which option can provide the needed level of service for the least cost, and declare that option better. A key problem with this approach is that it is difficult to define exactly the needed level of service for an Internet connection. The requirements depend on the applications being run over the connection, but these applications are constantly changing. As a result, so are the costs of meeting the applications requirements.

Until about twenty years ago, human conversation was by far the dominant application running on the telephone network. The network was consequently optimized to provide the type and quality of service needed for conversation. Telephone traffic engineers measured aggregate statistical conversational patterns and sized telephone networks accordingly. Telephonys well-defined and stable service requirements are reflected in the -- rule of thumb relied on by traffic engineers the average voice call lasts three minutes, the user makes an average of three call attempts during the peak busy hour, and the call travels over a bidirectional KHz channel.

In contrast, data communications are far more difficult to characterize. Data transmissions are generated by computer applications. Not only do existing applications change frequently (e.g. because of software upgrades), but entirely new categoriessuch as Web browserscome into being quickly, adding different levels and patterns of load to existing networks. Researchers can barely measure these patterns as quickly as they are generated, let alone plan future network capacity based on them.

The one generalization that does emerge from studies of both local and wide-

area data traffic over the years is that computer traffic is bursty. It does not flow in constant streams; rather, the level of traffic varies widely over almost any measurement time scale. Dynamic bandwidth allocations are therefore preferred for data traffic, since static allocations waste unused resources and limit the flexibility to absorb bursts of traffic.

This requirement addresses traffic patterns, but it says nothing about the absolute level of load. How can we evaluate a system when we never know how much capacity is enough? In the personal computing industry, this problem is solved by defining enough to be however much I can afford today, and relying on continuous price-performance improvements in digital technology to increase that level in the near future. Since both of the infrastructure upgrade options rely heavily on digital technology, another criteria for evaluation is the extent to which rapidly advancing technology can be immediately reflected in improved service offerings. Cable networks satisfy these evaluation criteria more effectively than telephone networks because

• Coaxial cable is a higher quality transmission medium than twisted copper wire pairs of the same length. Therefore, fewer wires, and consequently fewer pieces of associated equipment, need to be installed and maintained to provide the same level of aggregate bandwidth to a neighborhood. The result should be cost savings and easier upgrades.

• Cables shared bandwidth approach is more flexible at allocating any particular level of bandwidth among a group of subscribers. Since it does not need to rely as much on forecasts of which subscribers will sign up for the service, the cable architecture can adapt more readily to the actual demand that materializes.

• Telephonys dedication of bandwidth to individual customers limits the peak (i.e. burst) data rate that can be provided cost-effectively. In contrast, the dynamic sharing enabled by cables bus architecture can, if the statistical aggregation properties of neighborhood traffic cooperate, give a customer access to a faster peak data rate than the expected average data rate.

The key question in providing residential Internet access is what kind of network technology to use to connect the customer to the Internet for residential Internet delivered over the cable plant; the answer is broadband LAN technology. This technology allows transmission of digital data over one or more of the 6 MHz channels of a CAT 5 cable. Since video and audio signals can also be transmitted over other channels of the same cable, broadband LAN technology can co-exist with currently existing services.

The speed of a cable LAN is described by the bit rate of the modems used to send data over it. As this technology improves, cable LAN speeds may change, but at the time of this writing, cable modems range in speed from 500 Kbps to 10 Mbps, or roughly 17 to 40 times the bit rate of the familiar 56 Kbps telephone modem. This speed represents the peak rate at which a subscriber can send and receive data, during the periods of time when the medium is allocated to that subscriber. It does not imply that every subscriber can transfer data at that rate simultaneously. The effective average bandwidth seen by each subscriber depends on how busy the LAN is. Therefore, a cable LAN

will appear to provide a variable bandwidth connection to the Internet Full-time connections.

Cable LAN bandwidth is allocated dynamically to a subscriber only when he has traffic to send. When he is not transferring traffic, he does not consume transmission resources. Consequently, he can always be connected to the Internet Point of Presence without requiring an expensive dedication of transmission resources.

In contrast to the shared-bus architecture of a cable LAN, the telephone network requires the residential Internet provider to maintain multiple connection ports in order to serve multiple customers simultaneously. Thus, the residential Internet provider faces problems of multiplexing and concentration of individual subscriber lines very similar to those faced in telephone Central Offices.

The point-to-point telephone network gives the residential Internet provider an architecture to work with that is fundamentally different from the cable plant. Instead of multiplexing the use of LAN transmission bandwidth as it is needed, subscribers multiplex the use of dedicated connections to the Internet provider over much longer time intervals. As with ordinary phone calls, subscribers are allocated fixed amounts of bandwidth for the duration of the connection. Each subscriber that succeeds in becoming active (i.e. getting connected to the residential Internet provider instead of getting a busy signal) is guaranteed a particular level of bandwidth until hanging up the call.

Although the predictability of this connection-oriented approach is appealing, its major disadvantage is the limited level of bandwidth that can be economically dedicated to each customer. At most, an ISDN line can deliver 144 Kbps to a subscriber, roughly four times the bandwidth available with POTS. This rate is both the average and the peak data rate. A subscriber needing to burst data quickly, for example to transfer a large file or engage in a video conference, may prefer a shared-bandwidth architecture, such as a cable LAN, that allows a higher peak data rate for each individual subscriber. A subscriber who needs a full-time connection requires a dedicated port on a terminal server. This is an expensive waste of resources when the subscriber is connected but not transferring data.

Cable-based Internet access can provide the same average bandwidth and higher peak bandwidth more economically than ISDN. For example, 500 Kbps Internet access over cable can provide the same average bandwidth and four times the peak bandwidth of ISDN access for less than half the cost per subscriber. In the technology reference model of the case study, the 4 Mbps cable service is targeted at organizations. According to recent benchmarks, the 4 Mbps cable service can provide the same average bandwidth and thirty-two times the peak bandwidth of ISDN for only 0% more cost per subscriber. When this reference model is altered to target 4 Mbps service to individuals instead of organizations at 4 Mbps cable access costs 40% less per subscriber than ISDN. The economy of the cable-based approach is most evident when comparing the per-subscriber cost per bit of peak bandwidth $0.0 for Individual 4 Mbps, $0.60 for Organizational 4 Mbps, and $ for the 500 Kbps cable servicesversus close to $16 for ISDN. However, the potential penetration of cable- based access is constrained in many cases (especially for the 500 Kbps service) by limited upstream channel bandwidth. While the penetration limits are quite sensitive to several of the input parameter assumptions, the cost per subscriber is surprisingly less.

The paragraph above breaks down the costs of each approach into their separate components, they also provide insight into the match between what follows naturally from the technology and how existing business entities are organized. For example, the prices show that subscriber equipment is the most significant component of average cost. When subscribers are willing to pay for their own equipment, the access providers capital costs are low. This business model has been successfully adopted by SBC, but it is foreign to the cable industry. The resulting closed market structure for cable subscriber equipment has not been as effective as the open market for ISDN equipment at fostering the development of needed technology. In addition, commercial development of both cable and ISDN Internet access has been hindered by monopoly control of the needed infrastructurewhether manifest as high ISDN tariffs or simple lack of interest from cable operators.

Gwen Harwood (nee Foster) was born into a feminist family tradition in Queensland, Australia. Her education was Christian, musical and political. She was classically-trained in piano and organ but had her career aspirations dashed by what she saw as male-chauvinist attitudes.

Having married and moved from Brisbane to Tasmania when her husband was appointed to the University, she began to write poetry while bringing up her four children. Reverting to male noms de plumes to get published hardened her attitude to male-controlled Australian society of the 150s. Her growing awareness of the treatment of aboriginal people caused her to feel shame as a white Australian. White Australia policy regarding immigration led her to create a character for a set of poems where she explores the plight of a gifted, lonely Austrian musician, Krote (toad, in German). In various poems, she critices Australian society for its prejudiced narrow-mindedness ( Monday ), its pretentious and false artistic appreciation (At the Arts Club), its lack of compassion (Hospital Evening) and the way in which Australian children are carrying the prejudices of their parents into a new generation (Monday and Music lesson ). Krote is not portrayed overly sympathetically. Indeed, he is short-tempered and drunk much of the time. However, he delights in reversing the power in society by playing his music badly while nobody is cultured enough to notice and by retreating increasingly into a preferable dream existence to escape the stultifying, complacent Aussie Ocker world that he encounters.

Harwoods sense of mischief is readily apparent in these poems as is her desire to change attitudes to make Australia a more cultured, accommodating place where difference can be celebrated and a genuine polyglot created.

The issue of whether we should ban tobacco advertising had been widely debated in our community recently. It is an important issue because it concerns the way that we deal with the health and social questions related to tobacco. A variety of different arguments have been put forward. After considering both the advantages and disadvantages of banning tobacco advertising, I conclude that tobacco advertising should not be banned.

First of all, the question regarding the banning of tobacco advertising is what do people really want to ban? Is it tobacco or tobacco advertising? Each ban should have its own purpose and particular objective. Obviously, the aim of banning tobacco advertising is to reduce smoking because tobacco is made from poisonous materials and it is harmful to health. For this purpose we can see, the objective of the ban should be tobacco but not tobacco advertising. In any case tobacco advertising is just a promotional conduct, it would not damage society and people's health directly. Strangely, on the one hand people allow tobacco companies to continue to sell their products, on the other hand people are planning to ban tobacco advertising even though they know that tobacco advertising exists for tobacco but tobacco does not exist for tobacco advertising. It seems that tobacco advertising has become a victim of people's infirmity of purpose in banning tobacco. ( good point )

A frequently heard objection to tobacco advertising is that the tobacco advertising is probably a major cause of the large number of adolescent smokers. Since adolescents are in the phase when they are curious for novelties, there is a slight possibility that tobacco advertising might have been a small factor in the increasing number of adolescent smokers. However, it should also be noticed that a movie star smoking in a popular movie has more effects on adolescents than any other advertising. What is more, it cannot explain the increasing number of adult smokers. They are supposed to be aware of their conduct. Tobacco advertising is not able to influence them much. A survey conducted in 11 shows a significant contrast between Norway where tobacco advertising had been banned and Britain where tobacco advertising still continued. The result was interesting in a similar period the smoking rate increase in Norway was higher than that in Britain. It is obvious that a ban on tobacco advertising does not reduce smoking sufficiently. The more important reasons for tobacco consumption are " peer pressure, curiosity, parental example and other socio-economic circumstances". Tobacco advertising can be repressed but people's desire can not be suppressed. The restriction on tobacco advertising will never succeed until other related social and living problems are solved.

Another argument against banning tobacco advertising is that the restriction is a "threat to freedom of speech and freedom to trade". It will stifle the free competition among different industries. Similar to other businesses, the tobacco industry obeys all the trade regulations and has fulfilled all its obligations. The only reason it is blamed is because the tobacco may cause some diseases. However, the automobiles also cause accidents. Should we get rid of automobiles? The chemical industry is also a major cause of pollution; should we close all these factories? It is arbitrary that people restrict the development of the tobacco industry yet other industries are expanding. In addition, each product exists in the market for its own reasons. Tobacco satisfies people's demands and people need it to release stress or for other reasons. Banning tobacco advertising could generate other products tailored to people's desires. These could be more harmful and more indirect. The free market has its own competitive regulations and it should not be forced to change.Cheap University Papers on Should Tobacco Advertising be Banned ?

What is more, there is a very serious economic problem that may result from the ban on tobacco advertising. As everyone knows, tobacco companies are one of the major customers of journals. It has been predicted that the proposed bans and restrictions would lose between £ million and £4 million advertising revenues of British newspapers. Magazines and advertising posters would also be hit so hard that "it would take companies more than five years to win sufficient business to make up the loss and replace the lost revenues". Some supporters of bans contend that other businesses would replace tobacco companies and the lost revenues would be gained back. The question is if those businesses are really able to compensate the loss, where are they right now? ( good point ) Furthermore, the taxes on tobacco and the media are two of the main financial sources of a nation. When these two industries' revenues are reduced, there would also be a resultant decrease in national finances. Thus, it is doubtful whether an ineffective restriction is worth the huge financial loss.

Finally, the tobacco consumer's rights should also be considered. Those people have paid extra tax for their consumption. To be fair they should have the same rights as other consumers. Since the government permit tobacco to be sold, tobacco products are the same as other common products. The tobacco consumers are the same as other consumers. After tobacco consumers paying exorbitant duties, they have the right to watch tobacco advertising and to receive information about tobacco products.

In conclusion, for all of the reasons above, tobacco advertising should not be banned. However, the objection to banning tobacco advertising does not mean supporting tobacco industry. Undoubtedly, tobacco is harmful to people's health. To deal with this problem we should be patient to put forward an ideal solution but not through a simple ban……..

My pain, wish and future

I know I shouldn't but I do, I miss you. I see now that I had different expectations than what has happened. I don't know why I cry because you were never with me, we had an elusive delusional relationshipo and so now it is my time ti wake up from the dream and see the truth, face reality, how harsh it is. There is apart of me that believed that somehow some way we would be together. I now see that is impossible and after all the hurt, all the tears, all the pain, I don't think I would want it.

I know it has to hurt, for me to heal and heal I will, I will wake up and not remember that you exist. I look for ward to that day, the day, when I no longer hurt or long for what long was. My tears, so many I have shed, and you don't even know, it really is not worth it. I cry for what?? One or two nights of hot, fast love? A few rushed kisses and goodbyes and hours and days of wanting you, needing you close and you are far away, happy and oblivious to my sorrow. Why wouldi want that? Funny how sadistic I am.

You taught me a new level of gut wrenching, blood bursting pain, something no one can imagine, I lerant atht you can cry a thousand ways, until fast, hot vomit comes erupting from your stomach. I learnt that you never sacrifice yourself for someone to which you are only a convenience.

After thoughtful consideration of the various problems that plague this corporation, the main problem that stands out is their distribution channel, that is the company's sales force. To be more specific, their career-based agents are not trained to perform at their utmost efficiency. Though this problem can be categorized as long-term, it can still have drastic effects on the firm's present revenues.

This problem along with other problems creates a vicious circle that the company is presently entangled in. Meaning that since the new recruits are not trained to perform efficiently, they prefer to sell more disability income and annuities than life insurance because consumers can understand these policies better and the agents find them easier to explain. This problem coupled with low premiums per policy, results in an overall reduction in the annualized premium income, which according to the firm's executives is the most immediate concern.

Strengths

Custom Essays on Jefferson Pilot Corporation

Under the auspices of Roger Soles, Jefferson Pilot Corporation has earned a reputation of selling quality insurance products since the past 5 years. Looking at some of the core competencies, Jefferson Pilot has an excellent core of field and home office people. This company has a big market share in its industry compared to its competitors. This is evident from its strong financial condition that acts as a competitive advantage.

Decision-making and management had a top down focus and a high level of control has always been exercised.

Weaknesses

In the long term, the decreasing efficiency of Jefferson Pilot's sales force is a serious issue that demands immediate attention. Looking at Exhibit (), compared to the target group and the managerial peers, Jefferson's career agents go for the easy sale, that is they sell less of life insurance policies and more of disability income and annuities.

A further weakness lays in Jefferson's concentration in the southeast; where the standard of living of the people, so to speak their incomes are generally lower than in the Northeast. Many of the competitors have a strong presence in the Northeast and hence due to the level of incomes being higher there, their premiums are typically higher than Jefferson's.

An important negative aspect of the product offerings by Jefferson Pilot is that they do not have a variety of products as compared to its competitors and also there is little or almost no effort towards New Product Development. The work force also feels that the company is not market oriented. These facts are evident from the survey taken by the consultants.

Stemming from this problem is the retention of the company's sales force problem. In 11, recruits represented 48% of the base sales force, as compared to % and 8% of the two peer groups. Furthermore, Jefferson's sales force kept declining where as the two peer groups remained more or less stable. Likewise, only 5% of Jefferson's sales force had been with them for 5 years as compared to 40% and 45% of the other two peer groups. Hence they had a very high turnover rates as compared to the peer groups.

Lower productivity of Jefferson's agents versus the peers has also been a serious issue besides the above listed. The reason for this is low production standards compared to the peers' standards. Even the agents feel that the validation requirements, so to speak the performance standards that first year agents must meet, 6% believed them to be too low or modest.

Jefferson Pilot's marketing costs are in line with the managerial group but are a little above the target group, which is mainly due to the company being smaller than many of the target group companies. There are certain fixed costs that they have to incur which costs them about $1.65 for every $1.00 premium income in the first year as compared to $1.45 for the target group.

Please note that this sample paper on Jefferson Pilot Corporation is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on Jefferson Pilot Corporation, we are here to assist you. Carol Gilligans basic definition for male morality is that we have basic rights, and you must value those rights of others. In her accounts, males believe morality forms restrictions on what to do. To illustrate this point in one instance, she brings to light the Druggist experiment, conducted by Kohlberg. This is one in which a scenario is brought forth to an eleven-year- old child named Jake. This situation is about a loving husband by the name of Heinz married to a sickly woman. The wife is in need of a medicine that only the town color can provide. The price of the drug exceeds the funds of the loving and he attempts to convey the severity of the situation to the doctor. He attempted to get the price of the medicine lowered and was refused. The question of whether stealing the drug was morally right was asked. Young Jake believed Heinz should in fact steal the medicine because in his eyes a human life is worth more than money. Furthermore even with the varied theoretical element of love not being present in the relationship, the answer was the same. Under the cirsumstances, though an unlawful action was taken, it was justified in his eyes. As a male internally the perception is that he is capable of logical decisions. In saying that, he adapts a self-goverened mentality in which he believes that as long as the action is taken preserved a basic right, it is justified. There is a clear difference in his mind between law and what is morally right, the goal to be attained. A point brought forward by young Jake is that the doctor will get money from many other sources and the loss is not a make or break issue. From another male perspective this same belief applies in the works of an author by the name Rod Van Mechlen in a publication entitled Morality. In this work there are clear declarations of the what attributing factors that are comprised in a males moral fiber. That is that

The purpose of morality is to provide the framework for optimum survival. What behaviors will optimize human survival? How can we survive best as human beings? In this respect, morality is not entirely absolute

This implies the very point reiterated by Gilligan throughout the book. When negative circumstance is identified, morality is compromised. Its pursuit quite often steers notice from what Gilligan calls the consequence of choice.

Female morality is defined by Gilligan in so many words as that people have responsibilities towards one another. Kohleberg conducted the same interview on a female by the name of Amy. Her response was completely different than Jakes response. Amy felt that there might be other ways besides stealing and If he stole the drug, he might save his wife, then if he did he might have to go to jail and then his wife might get sicker again…. Stealing is not regarded as an opinion though a life of a loved one is evolved. The doctors money was even considered. Furthermore the death within itself wouldnt be the core travesty but it hurts a lot of people and hurts her. Dilemmas are solved in her mind through the realm of exhange of opinions. It is assumed that a tie will be made and there would be a mutual understanding. Care is the basis of action for her. Gilligan believes not that her response was not inferior as Kohlberg did when the experiment was executed, she just thinks that other things are being considered by Amy. She sought a solution within the confines of the law. When an action is taken, there is more regard for consequence and rather than have the situation erupt in a manner that could hurt people, an alternative is presented.Buy cheap Carol Gilligan term paper

As the book nears a concrete divide between male and female morality a parallel is made with Jean Piagets and Kohlberg.s ideas of moral development. Kohlbergs adapted a set of stages of moral development based on the theories of Piaget in which the Preoperational, Concrete and Formal stages of cognitive development were created. The underlying belief of Piaget was that when children begin their lives they are very self-centered beings that think very concretely (Piaget, 165). As logic is formed by age and experience, concerns go beyond internal need and they begin to decenter themselves. Although concrete thought is still present in children, experience can allow a child to eventually look at things from a theoretical point of view. Kohlbergs adaptation of his stages of moral development were similar in some ways. Broken into three stages of preconventional, conventional and postconventional (Weitan, 000) they furthered the beliefs of accululative layers to establish ethics. The preconventional says that self-centeredness is very abundant is this stage and morals are dealt with in the same way. The conventional states that morals transcend from internally to the ones of their elders. The last stage is postconventional is when ethics are established from the persons values. Gilligans take on these was similar in that the skeleton of this was fairly accurate but lacked the knowledge to be a gender universal system. It was reported in both scales (Gilligan and Piaget) the majority of the time that females always scored less. The reason being in her eyes was the measure of moral development was not applicable to the female perspective. As a result a scale was created by Gilligan called the Stages of the ethic of care. This differed from the male theorists was male scales of moral development focused on cognitive ability.

a.Preconventional- survival

b.Conventional- liberation in self sacrifice .Self sacrifice is right

c.Postconventional- nonviolence. No pain should be inflicted upon others or self

The changes in stages in her scale dealt with transitions in the idea of self. To prove her point about her belief in her adapted version of the stages of ethic care, a real issue was brought to forefront and applied to the stages. A group of pregnant females of varying ages were either thinking about or are allowing for an abortion.

1. Preconventional- Abortion was seen as a way out for themselves. Most didnt look beyond their own motives. An example of a female by the name of Susans first reaction when notified was that

The Civil War

Cheap Custom Essays on Civil War

Conflicts usually happen between nations, but sometimes many problems inside your own country result in many different points of view that in turn cause a war inside the country. A more technical word for this type of war is civil war. Above all the civil wars comes the American Civil War with a capital C and a capital W. This was not any war, but one that finally reunited the North and the South. "Many historians consider the Civil War the most important event in the history of the U.S. It was responsible for the worst death and destruction in the country's history. The war temporarily resolved a long and bitter debate over the balance of power between state and federal governments, ended more than two hundred years of slavery, destroyed the Confederacy, and fostered lasting suspicion and misunderstanding between the North and the South." (Streissguth, 001) Behind of every conflict are the causes. "Historians have long debated the causes of the Civil War. Many of them maintain that slavery was the root cause. In his second inaugural address in 1865, Lincoln said of slavery "All knew that this interest was, somehow, the cause of the war." But most historians agree that the war had a number of causes. They note especially the sectional division between North and South that is, the differences in economies, ideals, and ways of life. They also point to the disputes between the federal government and the states over what rights and powers the states possessed. " (American, 7) The causes of the Civil War predominantly came from major sprouting differences between the North and the South. The most significant difference was the economy, which primarily caused the war, and then social issues sparked some anger and lastly political issues.

The Civil War was a longtime process. Colonial times were responsible for shaping the country, in consequently two different areas the North and the South. Geographically, economically, and politically different, it was clear that there was going to be a problem between them. It all started with the needs of the people of the South and the people of the North. In the South, the early settlers found that the warm climate and the fertile soil was perfect for growing crops, so they brought in slaves from Africa to do the hard work. The South established a rural way of life that was sustained by an agricultural economy based on slave labor. The Southerners were very tied to their past, they did not welcome any new ideas. Up North, things were a little bit different. The cool climate and the rocky soil were not suitable at all for planting crops. So, they had to find an alternative, which was to explore industries and factories. The economy of the North came to depend more on trade than agriculture. This type of economy and advances in transportation and communication helped cities to expand and grow. Almost all industry and commerce were centered in the North. The Northerners or Yankees (called by Southerners) were very open to modernization and anything that would help to make a better future. "The ideals of Yankee Protestantism encouraged modernization. Those ideals included hard work, education, economic independence, and the belief that the community had the right and responsibility to decide whether an action was moral or immoral." (American, 7)

There are several examples of the economic issues that led to the Civil War. The North was very industrialized, modern, and military. Opposite of that, the South had it's "King Cotton". In 1858 Senator James Henry Hammond of South Carolina replied to Senator William H. Seward of New York "Without the firing of a gun, without drawing a sword, should they [Northerners] make war upon us [Southerners], we could bring the whole world to our feet. What would happen if no cotton was furnished for three years? . . England would topple headlong and carry the whole civilized world with her. No, you dare not make war on cotton! No power on earth dares make war upon it. Cotton is King." (http//www.civilwarhome...) There was also the Panic of 1857. What happened was that the banks had invested in businesses that were failing. The people came to withdrawl money (gold), but the ship that carried it sank, so no one could get the gold they demanded and this caused a three-year economic depression. The situation all over the country was terrible. One could say that economically the North was more advantageous, but the South had it's value, it had agriculture, the North had to trade for the supplies of food. Basically, the North would out level the South based on the economy, but it is very impressing to see how well the South resisted the military forces of the North without the mass productions of weapons etc.

For many, the main cause of the Civil War was slavery and the complications that followed it. But slavery was merely the climax of all economic causes that had been happening before. In other words, slavery, the social cause of the Civil War, descended from economic needs. The South was where the "heavy duty" of slavery happened due to the agricultural economy they had. They needed the manual labor to produce so they never morally questioned slavery. After a while, anti-slavery and abolitionists appeared in the North and began to rebel against slavery. Lincoln, the president that was elected and was president during the war was an abolitionist. The social causes of the war were only events that marked their way through history, succeeding or not, that concluded with the war.

The actual Civil War did not start from night to day, many rebellions and events that are considered the social causes of the war happened way before. There are many examples of famous rebellions for example the Rebellion in Charleston, 18, led by Denmark Vesey, which the South won. Also, the Rebellion in Virginia, 181, led by Nat Turner which made a small band of eight Black slaves into sixty or seventy in number. This was the beginning of a slave uprising that raised southern fears. This rebellion had a profound influence on the attitude of Southerners towards slavery, they now knew that slaves were not going to be slaves for the rest of their lives, they would fight against any obstacles in their way, in that case, the Southerners. Everything that went on the country had two sides, even newspapers, The Liberator was a purely abolitionist paper. Later, the American Anti- Slavery Society was created in 18. The society pressed for the immediate and unconditional abolition of slavery, sponsored speaking tours of white and black orators such as the eloquent former slave Frederick Douglass. This man was one of the most engaged leaders of the abolitionist movement. Douglass served as an adviser to President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War and fought for the adoption of constitutional amendments that guaranteed voting rights and other civil liberties for blacks. People like Douglass that were against the slavery issue were mobilizing and creating societies to get rid of this problem forever.

Lastly, is the political part of the puzzle. As important as it sounds, politics were not as impacting as economic and social issues. It is one of the main catalysts of the war, one of the reactions between the social and economic issues. The main political problem was the issue of the Confederation vs. the Federation. By the 1850's, some Northerners had begun working for the complete abolition of slavery, and to make things even better the South states threatened to secede from the Union as a means to protect their right to keep slaves. Then the U.S. elects an abolitionist president, Abe Lincoln. He was not totally against slavery, but was much more of an abolitionist and would certainly avoid benefiting the South in any way. He did not recognize the Southern states that had formed a Confederacy as separate from his country.. They automatically secede and form a Confederacy, a little country inside America, and they want their independence together with their "president" Jefferson Davis.

Take the Missouri Compromise (180) as an example. It allowed Missouri to become a "Slave- State", to balance the free and slave states. What did it do? It only delayed the issue of slavery, did not solve anything, it just prevented the North and South from discussing the issue. The Compromise of 1850 is another example of politics (uselessness in solving the problem). This Compromise was a group of acts that hoped to settle the slavery question for once, by pleasing both the North and the South. Popular sovereignty was put into use, and once more, did not solve anything; it caused even more problems between the Northern and the Southern states. The Kansas/Nebraska Act of 1854 is another example of the political issue of the Civil War. This act only caused more political turmoil, it shattered the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850 because Kansas was a slave state, but Kansas was above the line that divided slave and free states. The Dred Scott decision was the most significant event because it taught future generations of slaves a lesson. It did not lead into anything, Dred Scott, a slave, lost his case, but he enhanced many others with the urge to try to be free. His case only led to the deception of the abolitionists and the closest step to the Civil War. The Crittenden Compromise was an unsuccessful last-minute effort to avert the Civil War. It made minor modifications to the Missouri Compromise and to the Fugitive Slave Law and extended some boundaries. It did nothing more than that , making clear the inevitability of the Civil War. With all these examples that happened right before the war, it is obvious enough to see that politics did nothing to help solve the slavery and argumentation problem between the North and the South. In fact, it only worsened the situation. The only good that can come out of this is the fact that the war finally broke out (not that war is a good thing).

This was the first total war, "in which massive armies fought each other in a conflict where there could be no compromise." (Thackeray, 16) Many lives were killed, more than 610,000 deaths. All the war was fought in the South, so many properties were damaged, and two-thirds of southern railroad mileage had been destroyed. In reality, the Civil War could have been avoided. Because it was a chain of reactions that led to the war, if one of the reactions was taken more seriously, then it would not have sparked rebellions and resulted in the war. But it happened, and so the thing is to take out positive things of the after war. The Civil war had many outcomes for America's future. It ended the slavery issue, from the Constitution, from the states, but sadly not from the mind of the pro-slavery people. But what the war did was to the abolitionists, and to the free slaves. They became more inspired to try and fight the racial discrimination problem that remained in America for many decades. The U.S. grew politically, economically, and socially after the war. It united the North and the South, the economy was now tied and could work together. The people just had to get over the fact that the nation was one, and not divided in half.

Legalizing Marijuana

Should the United States legalize Marijuana? There are two controversies over issue and that are still fighting against each other. One side is of those who are pro marijuana and those who are anti marijuana. One of the major groups who are trying to legalize Marijuana is the legalization groups such as the physician's Association for AIDS Care. According to National Lymphoma Foundation, they argue that marijuana should be legalized in order to treat patients who are terminally ill. Among these are AIDS victims who find that marijuana stimulates their appetites, and are able to fight off dangerous of getting skinnier, and glaucoma sufferers whom have used marijuana, said it has prevented them from going blind. Also marijuana helps the cancer patients by alleviating the severe nausea that later on often accompanies chemotherapy and without marijuana sometimes makes life saving treatment impossible (Olsen A1).

The result of these controversies show there is enough evidence to prove that marijuana can be used as a prescribed drug. Also, many patients who are pro marijuana complain that morphine and cocaine are legal and re much more dangerous drugs, these are some of the question the patients bring up. Why not legalize marijuana as medical a drug, which is proven to be less dangerous than cocaine and morphine? Several doctors believe that the use of marijuana will make the ill patient live longer with no pain Marijuana can be a drug of necessity in the treatments of AIDS, glaucoma, cancer and multiple sclerosis (Olsen A1).

Many agencies which are anti marijuana such as Drug Enforcement Agency and police departments argue that marijuana shouldn't be legalized because if marijuana become legal, then thousands of ill patients could have the opportunity to use marijuana. The main reason why the Drug Enforcement Agency doesn't want marijuana to be legal is because there are no scientific researches with evidence which proves that marijuana is an effective drug as a medicine (Donnelly 1). Write my Essay on marijuana shouldn't be legalized in the united states of America. for me

According to the Health and Human Services there is no evidence that marijuana is a medicine and that there are other medicines that are effective as marijuana. Marijuana is harmful to AIDS, Cancer patients because of the active ingredients in marijuana, which reduce the body's white blood cells that fights off infections. Police department believes the with the legalization of drugs, crime will increase due to higher increase of pot users, which will eventually become addicts and will steal or kill in order to get their drugs (Donnelly 1).

Seeing both sides of the issue, I come to a conclusion that marijuana should be legalized in order to help people suffering from terminal diseases such as AIDS, cancer and glaucoma. Prohibitions of marijuana will not diminish the use of it in the United States. I believe that marijuana is here to stay in our society as a part of and common as alcohol and other drugs. Due to all these factors; marijuana will become more widely accepted by the American people who will pressure congress to rewrite the laws on the acceptance of marijuana. After seeing both sides of the issue I am still one hundred percent6 pro marijuana even though I don't use it, I believe that the use of marijuana could help the ill patients to live longer and suffering no pain. These are the main points and reasons why it is believed the drug named marijuana shouldn't be legalized in the united states of America.

It was the most unforgettable chldhood experience I had in my life. It had affected me quite greatly and because of it, I developed a phobia of fire. I was only seven years old then.

Mama, Papa, where are you? I cried out. The raging fire was spreading rapidly and fiercely. I could not withstand the unbearable heat any longer. I was going to faint when someone with strong arms pulled me out of the house.

The ambulance had arrived. I was left without much strength, but was still shouting desperately for my parents. I saw the thirsty tonges of the fire licking the house which I had live in for seven years, trying to swallow it as fast as it possibly could. Heavy black smoke billowed out of the shattered windows. The dust and smoke also created a black and thick layer which blotted out the sunlight. The firemen were trying their best to put out the fire.

Just as I was feeling helpless, I heard my name being called. I turend round and saw my parents! At that point, I suddenly felt the surge of energy as I raced towards them and embraced them tightly. I learnt only later then that they had just been rescued.

The firemen took two and a half hours to extinguish the blaze. Making sure that we were all right, the ambulance and firemen went off and the policemen also cordoned off the area.

We stood transfixed, staring at the burnt house. All that was left was only a blackened ruin with shattered windows. My parents were too shocked to say anything. Their faces were too, gaunt with exhaustion and hopelessness. I knew that the hard worked my parents worked for and put in for the past twelve years were gone, absolutely gone, gone with the fire! Everything was destroyed! And it was just a small fire, a small fire which was started playfully. An utter sense of repentance and sorrow started decending on me. I apologised to my parents, apologised for my playfullness and wildness, but I knew, I was never really forgiven...

Today my team consisting of Adrio Louw, Isaac Lazario and myself will present to you why "technology has gone too far". By the end of today, I'm sure that you will agree with us that technology has gone too far.

Firstly, weapons of mass destruction. You may think weapons of mass destruction were only something Iraq obtained, but you are wrong. In fact, the first use of chemical weapons was on August 6th, 15, during World War , when the atomic bomb was used. This was the first atomic bomb to be used against an enemy position; the United States Army Air Forces dropped it on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Albert Einstein and the Manhattan Project developed this bomb. According to U.S. estimates 60,000 to 70,000 people were killed or missing as a result of the bomb and many more were made homeless. This advancement in technology was not only the cause of the loss of thousands of lives, but also the cause of environmental destruction. The blast also destroyed more than 10 sq km of the city, completely destroying 68 percent of Hiroshimas buildings and another 4 percent were damaged. In addition to its nearly unimaginable destructive force, consisting of pressure waves, flash burns, and high winds, a nuclear explosion also produces deadly radiation in the form of gamma rays. The radiation from the nuclear explosion destroyed all the living matter and contaminated the soil and water.

Secondly, over fishing. The advancement in technology was the cause of over-fishing in global waters. Between 150 and 10 the amount of fish caught in our oceans has increased by 5 times. The annual fish catch per annum is now at 10 million tones. Engines have replaced sail and fishing is no longer done with "PASSIVE GEAR" that is equipment that waited for the fish. As a result fish can be more actively pursued and more fish caught.

For example radar allows ships to fish in foggy conditions and sonar allows schools to be more easily caught. Fishers on large boats now have access to satellite weather data that allows them to plot the location of warm and cold weather fronts.Custom Essays on technology

Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley is a complex novel that was written during the age of Romanticism. It contains many typical themes of a common Romantic novel such as dark laboratories, the moon, and a monster; however, Frankenstein is anything but a common novel. Many lessons are embedded into this novel, including how society acts towards the different. The monster fell victim to the system commonly used to characterize a person by only his or her outer appearance. Whether people like it or not, society always summarizes a persons characteristics by his or her physical appearance. Society has set an unbreakable code individuals must follow to be accepted. Those who dont follow the standard are hated by the crowd and banned for the reason of being different. When the monster ventured into a town...[monster] had hardly placed [his] foot within the door ...children shrieked, and ...women fainted (101). From that moment on he realized that people did not like his appearance and hated him because of it. If villagers didnt run away at the sight of him, then they might have even enjoyed his personality. The monster tried to accomplish this when he encountered the De Lacey family. The monster hoped to gain friendship from the old man and eventually his children. He knew that it could have been possible because the old man was blind, he could not see the monsters repulsive characteristics. But fate was against him and the wretched had barely conversed with the old man before his children returned from their journey and saw a monstrous creature at the foot of their father attempting to do harm to the helpless elder. Felix darted forward, and with supernatural force tore [the creature] from his father... (1). Felixs action caused great inner pain to the monster. He knew that his dream of living with them happily ever after would not happen. After that bitter moment the monster believed that ...the human senses are insurmountable barriers to our union [with the monster] (18) and with the De Lacey encounter still fresh in his mind along with his first encounter of humans, he declared war on the human race. The wicked beings source of hatred toward humans originates from his first experiences with humans. In a way the monster started out with a child-like innocence that was eventually shattered by being constantly rejected by society time after time. His first encounter with humans was when he opened his yellow eyes for the first time and witnessed Victor Frankenstein, his creator, ...rush out of the [laboratory]... (56). Would this have had happened if society did not consider physical appearance to be important? No. If physical appearance were not important then the creature would have had a chance of being accepted into the community with love and care. But society does believe that physical appearance is important and it does influence the way people act towards each other. Frankenstein should have made him less offending if even he, the creator, could not stand his disgusting appearance. There was a moment however when Frankenstein ...was moved... (1) by the creature. He ...felt what the duties of a creator... (7) were and decided that he had to make another creature, a companion for the original. But haunting images of his creation (from the monsters first moment of life) gave him an instinctive feeling that the monster would do menacing acts with his companion, wreaking twice the havoc! Reoccurring images of painful events originating from a first encounter could fill a person with hate and destruction. We as a society are the ones responsible for the transformation of the once child-like creature into the monster we all know. The public needs to know that our society has flaws and they must be removed before our primal instincts continue to isolate and hurt the people who are different. With such a large amount of technology among us, some people may wonder why such an advanced civilization still clings on to such primitive ways of categorizing people.

With her story, Everyday Use, Alice Walker is saying that art should be a living, breathing part of the culture it arose from, rather than something from which to be observed from a distance. To make this point, she uses the quilts in her story to symbolize art; and what happens to these quilts represents her theory of art. The quilts themselves, as art, are inseparable from the culture they arose from. The history of these quilts is a history of the family. The narrator says, In both of them were scraps of dresses Grandma Dee had worn fifty and more years ago. Bits and pieces of Grandpa Jarrells Paisley shirts. And one teeny faded blue piece, about the size of a matchbox, that was from Great Grandpa Ezras uniform that he wore in the Civil War. So these quilts, which have become a valued possession passed through succeeding generations, not only represent the family, but also are an integral part of the family. Walker is saying that true art not only represents its culture, but also is an inseparable part of that culture. The manner in which the quilts are treated shows Walkers view of how art should be treated. Dee desires the quilts for their financial and artistic value. But theyre priceless! she exclaims, when she learns that her mother has already promised them to Maggie. Dee argues that Maggie is backward enough to put them to everyday use. Indeed, this is how Maggie views the quilts. She values them for what they mean to her as an individual. This becomes clear when she says, I can member Grandma Dee without the quilts, implying that her connection with the quilts is personal and emotional rather than financial and artistic. She also knows that the quilts are an active process, kept alive through continuous renewal. As the narrator points out, Maggie knows how to quilt. The two sisters values concerning the quilt represent the two main approaches to art appreciation in our society. Art can be valued for financial and artistic reasons, or it can be valued for personal and emotional reasons. When the narrator snatches the quilts from Dee and gives them to Maggie, Walker is saying that the second set of values is the correct one. Art, in order to be kept alive, must be put to Everyday Use -- literally in the case of the quilts, figuratively in the case of traditional art. Alice Walker is using the quilts, and the fate of those quilts, to make the point that art can only have meaning if it remains connected to the culture it sprang from. Her story itself is a good example Walker didnt write it to be observed under a glass case, judged artistically, and sold to the highest bidder; she meant it to be questioned, to be explored, to be debated -- in short, to be put to Everyday Use.

Everyday Use

We always carry something to remind us who we are or where we come from. There are some people trying to forget who they are or where they come from. But there are also some people who will never forget their roots and their culture. They even value a little thing that has a significant meaning because it reminds them who they are. The story "Everyday Use", written by Alice Walker, is not simply about the quilts but also about the culture where narrator comes from. The story presents the conflict about how the quilts, apart of culture, should be treated. Should it be hang on the wall or should it be put to "everyday use".

"Everyday Use" is narrated by a woman who describe herself as working hard has "a large, big-boned with rough, a man-working hands." She has enjoyed a rugged farming life in the country. She has two daughters, Maggie, her younger daughter, and Dee, her older daughter. The story starts with the even that Dee will pay her and Maggie a visit. Dee had left home for quite a long time. She and Maggie were very happy to see Dee and everything was fine until Dee saw the quilt. The quilt was handmade by her mother, Dee and Maggie's grandmother. By the time, it has been quilted again and again by her mother and her to keep it new. It has become the heirloom of the family. Besides, they have another quilt as well, but it was made by machine and Dee was not interested in

Ho

it. Dee wanted the handmade one. Now the conflict occurs, should she give it to Dee or Maggie, which she has promised to give her. A decision should be made.

To Dee and Maggie, this quilt is precious but they have totally different point of view on why they see it precious. Dee covets the quilt for its financial and aesthetic value. "But they are priceless" she exclaims, when she learns that her mother has already promised it to Maggie. Dee said that Maggie is "backward enough to put it to everyday use." Indeed, this is how Maggie views this quilt. She values it for what it means to her as an individual. This becomes clear that her connection with the quilt is personal and emotional rather than financial and aesthetic. She values it greatly because it gives her a connection with her grandmother, her family when she sees the quilt. But she is willing to give it up to Dee and still "remember grandmother" without the quilt. To her the quilt is not important, it is much more important that she has the connection with her family from deep inside her mind, her heart.

The quilt, a piece of art which represent the family, the culture can be valued for financial reasons, or it can be valued for personal and emotional reasons. Snatching the quilt from Dee, the woman gave it to Maggie and offered Dee the machine stitched one, the lady told us which set values is correct, it must be put into "Everyday use."

This story is abou how the quilt shout be treated. Should it be used or hung on the wall. And I absolutely agree with what the narrator did which was give it to Maggie. If the narrator gave it to Dee, she would frame the quilt and hang it on the wall, distancing it from her present life and aspiration, to put them to everyday use would be to admit her status as a member of her old fashioned family. It is right to give the quilt to Maggie because the quilt is an active process, kept alive through continuous renewal and Maggie knows how to quilt. Not only will she use the quilt, but also she will go on making more and pass them down to next generation.
