In recent years, a growing emphasis has been placed on widening access to education and training. Educational policy has focussed on access and the need to target particular groups in society to encourage them to take up the learning opportunities that exist, while at the same time encouraging the education sector to expand the range and volume of learning opportunities. The policies fall under the umbrella of 'Lifelong Learning' and it is apparent that any changes brought about by lifelong learning policies could have wide ranging effects on our society. As lifelong learning becomes a key theme of educational policy, it is important to question its dominance and examine the agendas it seeks to address.

apparently such an important concern that our politicians and governments

While tied to notions of employment, lifelong learning is also being promoted as a tool by which we can tackle social exclusion, and can therefore be seen as a two-pronged approach to the future development of our society.

The government also believes that lifelong learning has a major contribution to make in promoting social inclusion. Opportunities to learn through vocational training or Further Education in general can improve the skills and employability of those seeking work, while less formal community education can provide the first steps into wider opportunities to participate in work and learning. (Scottish Office, 1)

While one might reasonably expect that the economic imperative and social development models would require different approaches, a closer examination of the policies reveals a blurring of the divisions between them. For example, Opportunity Scotland (18) delivers this ten point action plan;

…by 00 the Scottish University for Industry will have been launched, …to make learning easier and more convenient. OVERWEIGHT men who pull their belts too tight could be increasing their risks of cancer.

Oesophageal adenocarcinomas have increased 150 per cent in men since the 170s and gastric reflux is believed to be a significant factor.

The head of the SA Cancer Control Research Centre, Associate Professor David Roder, said reflux of gastric juices into the oesophagus caused changes to the cellular lining.

Pressure on the stomach was more common in men because they carried their excess weight across the abdomen. Buy cheap Tight belts linked cancer term paper

Tight belts and trying to keep their bellies in -- all that could be feeding in to this reflux oesophagitis, Professor Roder said.

COMPUTER users have overwhelmed the Microsoft website as they race against time to protect their computers against a virulent worm sweeping the Internet.

So many people have tried to download a patch to protect against the worm that the website servers have struggled with demand.

In an ironic twist, this has had the same effect as the denial of service attack the worm will launch against the Microsoft update site tomorrow.

Up to 100,000 Australian computers are believed to have been infected with the virus, which goes by the names of MSBlast, Blaster, Poza or LovSan.

Vodafone, Monash University, RMIT, two major media organisations, and one federal and two state government departments are among the higher profile victims of the worm since it first appeared on Monday.

Tens of thousands of Australian home computer users have also seen their computers crash or slow down after being infected.

Yesterday, the worm continued to infect about 500 computers an hour around the world.

Australia has the fourth worst rate of infection, behind the US, Britain and Canada.

Australian Computer Emergency Response Team senior security analyst Jamie Gillespie said the delay in users downloading the patch to protect against the vulnerability in Windows could lead to it having a longer life.

The worm does not erase files or create major damage, but duplicates itself to e-mail addresses in a users address book and can cause systems to crash or run slowly.

The worm exploits a vulnerability in the way files are shared in Windows NT, Windows 000 and Windows XP that Microsoft discovered on July 16.

Computer Associates senior security consultant Daniel Katz said his company had received two thirds of their monthly calls in the past three days.

Trend Micro managed services architect Andrew Gordon said the real number of infections would never be known because only a fraction would be reported.

The largest victim sector will be the home-user market, he said.

The home-user market is most significant as they usually struggle with keeping their anti-virus software up to date, let alone keeping Microsoft vulnerability patches up to date, he said.

Security experts fear other hackers will tamper with the worms code and unleash an even more disruptive worm.

Someone can get this worm, do a slight modification and make it more malicious, Mr Gordon said.

Tomorrow the worm will attack Microsofts Windows update website where computer users can download the protective patch.

Friends or Enemies

Through the course of the novel it is shown that it is not just a story but the author is focusing on the importance of relationships as the issues in the society he is living in come to surface.

Chaim Potok's The Chosen is an analysis of Society and the Individual. Through this analysis, Potok focuses on the key theme of the importance of relationships. During a time when the world was uneasy, Potok wrote The Chosen as a means of trying to understand what was happening in society. Through the characters he explores the issues like Religion, education, family, interests and careers, which relates to the theme of the importance of relationships.

Religion in The Chosen provides a solid yet confusing link in the friendship of Danny Saunders and Reuven Malter, as the boys are from different religious sects of Judaism. The first conflict between the two begins at a baseball game when Danny injures Reuven. The game turns into a religious war between Hasidic Jews and the more orthodox Jews. Danny is a Hasidic Jew and it is from the initial hatred of Reuven's religious customs that their friendship is formed. Evidence of this is when Danny says "we're going to kill you apikorsim" at the ball game and later when he visits Reuven in hospital the two start talking friendly about their different interests and religious views. Religion divides the two and at the same time brings them closer together. Judaism's place in the modern world is questioned, as its adherents are torn between the demands of the secular world and their religious faith.Cheap Custom Essays on Friends or Enemies?

Education is very important in the twentieth century and given the time in which the novel is set, education was the future. In the Chosen, education enables Danny and Reuven to meet each other through the school baseball game. When Danny and Reuven finish their high school studies, both boys attend Hirsch College, where they study together and their friendship becomes even stronger. The war ends whilst the boys are at college and the Zionist movement, directed at creating the secular state of Israel as a Jewish Homeland, becomes strong. Reuven's father is very active in the movement and as a result Danny's father who opposes it forbids Danny from associating with Reuven. During this time in society, tensions were high amongst the Jews and often heated fistfights and riots broke out on Hirsch Campus and other such places. When the United Nations finally approved of the creation of Israel, the fighting between the Jews subsided. Danny and Reuven renew their friendship and Danny tells Reuven that he is still pursuing his dream of becoming a psychologist. Danny used to worship a psychologist by the name of Sigmund Freud who was very controversial around this time. He tells Reuven he no longer thinks of him as a god and has learned to appreciate all forms of Psychology.

The boys interests are what actually allows them to start talking and become friends. Reuven learns when he is talking to Danny at the hospital that even though he is Hasidic, he still has a mind of his own, "He dressed like a Hasid, but didn't sound like one". Despite the boy's very different backgrounds, they find that they have much in common. They are both very intelligent and good students. They are only born a few days apart and are in the same grade. Their career goals are however very different. Neither of the boys are really interested in the social aspects of life, but more into learning and studying. It is important in relationships to have someone who shares similar values and views life the way you do. During this time in society, the Jews were tense with the whole Zionist movement and with the war having just ended. To share your thoughts and ideas with someone was very important.

Family in the Chosen helps Danny and Reuven's friendship as Danny is forced to share his thoughts and feelings with Reuven and his father. Danny's relationship with his father in the Chosen is awkward. Danny longs to have a relationship with his father like the one he sees with Reuven and his father. He is troubled by his father's silence and it is not until the end of the novel that he truly understands the meaning of the silence. Danny's father had suffered greatly, having fled from Russia during the Bolshevik revolution with his followers after the murder of his wife and children. As Danny is unable to share his thoughts and ideas with his father he spends a lot of time talking to Reuven's family. Families play an important role in the friendships of young people in society today.

In the twentieth century the importance of relationships between boys growing up has become more important than ever. With the ever rapidly changing world and tensions rising between countries, friendships can get people through tough times. As the Chosen points out, there are many children who have troubled family lives and rely on friends to help them out. This is seen between Danny and his father. Potok has brought up these issues through his novel the Chosen as he was trying to portray what was happening in the society around him.

He was an arrogant and boastful man, often tactless and sometimes brutal. Physically strong and worldly wise, he made an excellent settler. However, his personality, his obvious qualifications and his low social position infuriated many of the colonys leaders and settlers. Despite this, he was named to the first Council in May, 1607. He learned the Indians language and became the colonys principal Indian trader. During the summer of 1608 he led a ,000 mile expedition in an open boat to explore and map Chesapeake Bay and its principal rivers. On September 10, 1608 the Council elected him Governor of Virginia for a one-year term. He was an able leader who understood both the Indians and the settlers needs and the colony prospered.

Virginians know that Captain John Smith was one of the first American heroes. But because he was a proud and boastful man, it is difficult to know which parts of his life are fact and which are fiction. What many people may not know is that Smiths adventures started even before Jamestown.

Born in 1580 in Willoughby, England, John Smith left home at age 16 after his father died. He began his travels by joining volunteers in France who were fighting for Dutch independence from Spain. Two years later, he set off for the Mediterranean Sea, working on a merchant ship. In 1600 he joined Austrian forces to fight the Turks in the Long War. A valiant soldier, he was promoted to Captain while fighting in Hungary. He was fighting in Transylvania two years later in 160. There he was wounded in battle, captured, and sold as a slave to a Turk. This Turk then sent Smith as a gift to his sweetheart in Istanbul. According to Smith, this girl fell in love with him and sent him to her brother to get training for Turkish imperial service. Smith reportedly escaped by murdering the brother and returned to Transylvania by fleeing through Russia and Poland. After being released from service and receiving a large reward, he traveled all through Europe and Northern Africa. He returned to England in the winter of 1604-05.

Here begins Captain John Smiths American adventures. Apparently restless in England, Smith became actively involved with plans to colonize Virginia for profit by the Virginia Company, which had been granted a charter from King James I. After setting sail on December 0, 1606, this famous expedition finally reached Virginia in April 1607 after enduring a lengthy voyage of over four months in three tiny ships. When the sealed box that listed the names of the seven council members who were to govern the colony was opened, Smiths name was on the list. On May 1, 1607 the settlers landed at Jamestown ready to begin the task of surviving in a new environment.Buy cheap WHOA term paper

Captain Smith returned to England in October, 160 following an accidental gunpowder burn and became Virginias most effective propagandist and historian. His True Relation of Virginia (1608), Map of Virginia (161) and General History of Virginia (164) presented the colony as Smith understood it. In 1614 he made a short voyage to New England where he explored and mapped the coast from Cape Cod to Maine. Smith returned to England and never visited Virginia again, never married and never received the recognition he thought he deserved. He died June 1, 161 an dwas buried in St. Sepulchres Church in London.

Mahatma Gandhi once said "an ounce of practice is worth more than tons of preaching. He stands before us as one of the prime examples of the title; actions speak louder than words. He managed to drive the British Empire, which was abusing his country, out of India simply by using non-violent approaches. He would let the soldiers attack him and his followers, and threatened to starve himself if the violence didn't stop. It should be said that he also had great wisdom, and held some powerful speeches. But he knew that action would forever speak louder than any word he would utter.

One find similar cases in literature. The book „Pride and Prejudice" (Jane Austen) and the play „The Shadow of a Gunman" (O'Casey) displays examples of the very same. However, their exemplifications are a little bit different.

In „Pride and Prejudice" (from now on P&P) the character that embodies the strong ness of action mostly is Mr Darcy. He is a man of silence, who doesn't give away much of himself. This leads to him in many cases being misunderstood. His direct action in the book is to pay Mr. Wickham an unknown sum of money to secure him in the future. In the society in which Darcy lives, such a "good deed" would normally have been done very publicly to view the persons wealth and good will. Mr Darcy, on the other hand does not want the information to get out. When it finally does get out, Elizabeth Bennet, who is having strong feelings against him, starts to realize that she has been wrong in many of her assumptions. Mr Darcy stands out as a clumsy character when it comes to speaking. He tries to propose to Elizabeth, but can't get his wordings right because he is so excited. This leads Elizabeth to find him "ungentlemanlike" and to reject him immediately. Her eyes are, however, opened by his actions. Furthermore, Mr Darcy does also on a later occasion send her a letter, where he tries trying to explain himself. The letter is directly connected with the action of his proposal earlier. Subsequently, actions can also lead to other actions, and also to establish a more reasonable and open relationship between people. Action can lead to talking. It acts as a starting point to tear down barriers.

Conversely, the character of Mr Collins in the same book displays an opposite position to the effectiveness of action. He is basically all words, and no action. He talks continuously and it doesn't lead anywhere (except from making people get annoyed with him and see him as totally useless). He uses what he finds as grand words and expressions, but is in fact a very hypocritical. This contrast in characters only works to emphasize Mr Darcy's actions. His language is not like Mr Collins', he uses relatively simple wordings and gets his points across. Unlike Mr Collins he doesn't use big superlatives unless it's necessary. Order Custom Essay on "Actions speak louder than words." Discuss the implications of this statement with reference to your study of topics and/or literary texts.

Correspondingly, the play "Shadow of a Gunman" by Sean O'Casey demonstrates a character with an even clearer attitude towards action in Minnie Powell. Minnie in herself doesn't have a big role in the play in terms of actually time on stage, but her presence and her actions exhibit a great deal of courage and loyalty which none of the other characters have. She stands opposed to the main characters of Davoren and Seamus, who are portrayed as cowardice and backing out. Her action is to take the bombs from Seamus and Davoren's room to her own, when the house is being raided. In this she puts her own life in front of theirs, and is eventually killed for this. This makes Davoren realize what has actually happened. He has earlier said "What danger can there be in living in the shadow of a gunman?", and the dangers are here shown, through the loss of Minnie. Davoren doesn't find the sacrifice worth, and would rather have died himself, he realizes later on. Minnie's actions has in this manner also opened his eyes towards the world, as seem above with Elizabeth Bennet. In comparison with P&P, one also finds the strong contrasts between people of action and people of words. Davoren is a poet, and talks about bravery and romanticism in his poems, but is unable to turn it into action.

I am going to write about the film which was shot according to the book Cry, the beloved country written by Alan Paton. Paton wrote this book from his deep concern with the racial problem in South Africa. This film was shot in the early sixties and even though there were already made colored films, this one is black and white as the whole issue of apartheid between blacks and whites, which is the subject of many books and films.

This film is very similar to the book and the script is nearly completely the same. Every character says exactly the same words as those in the book. In the beginning of the film there is the sight of the landscape of Ndotsehni and the words of how the land is destroyed because of the bad treatment with the land. This tells about the bad situation in South Africa. The action is based on the story of Stephen Kumalo, the black priest of Ndotsehni.

One day Kumalo receives a letter from the priest from Johannesburg in which there is written that his sister Gertrude is very sick and that he is to come to Johannesburg . He hasn't heard from his son, sister and brother for years. When he comes to Johannesburg he is very confused because he has never been to such a big city before. He is helped by the young priest Msimangu. He finds his sister with her child living in very bad conditions. Gertrude's sickness is not a normal kind of sickness. She is doing a prostitute and also illegal activities. She knows nothing about Kumalo's son Absalom. He takes her to the place where he is now living. Their plan is that he will take them back to Ndotsenhi. Then Kumalo finds his brother John. John is a carpenter and a bussinessman. He has an another opinion about the blacks and whites as his brother does. He knows also nothing about Absalom. He knows only that Absalom and his son were companions. The searching for Absalom is very hard and Kumalo finds his son when it is too late. His son is to be hung because of murder of a white man. Before he's hung he marries his not legal wife with whom he has child so Kumalo would take her with him to Ndotsehni. When Kumalo is to come back to Ndotsehni Gertrude disappears but she leaves her child with Kumalo. Everybody is happy that Kumalo is back but he is a little bit ashamed that his son is a murderer. Kumalo meets a father of a killed man, Mr.Jarvis. Mr.Jarvis doesn't feel anger in him and he understands Kumalo, because he knows that Kumalo is a good man. He gives money to Kumalo to build a new church, he also sends a man to teach people in Ndotsehni how to cultivate the land so it would be as rich as it was before. In the end of the film there is Kumalo standing on the hills waiting for the dawn, the dawn when his son is to be hung, the dawn which brings a new hope to South Africa. This end is accompanied with the hymnic song Onto the hills.

The whole film is very well made. The characters are played excellently and the setting looks exactly in the way that it is described in the book. I liked both the book and the film very much.Write my Essay on Alan Paton, Cry the Beloved Country for me

New York City, Los Angeles, and a small Arkansas town...What do these geographically and culturally diverse locations have in common? A first glance would lead you to believe they have nothing in common, but after a closer investigation, one common tie can be found. Each location whether metropolitan or rural, is affected by America's leading industry, agriculture. When a family gathers for a Sunday dinner of steak and potatoes, they are reaping the benefits of American farmers. When a vegetarian searches the grocery store isles in search of non-meat products, he or she is facing the effects of American farmers and their agriculture products. In short, American farmers' are responsible for supplying American's with their daily bread baskets. As president George W. Bush stated in a recent forum pertaining to America's nutritional needs, "Food is the foundation of everyone's security." No statement could be more true.

Although most American's simply run to the grocery store and purchase a loaf of bread or a carton of milk, they do not think about where these products come from or who produced them. As scientific technology is expanding by leaps and bounds, so too has agriculture and the methods used to produce the ever increasing demand for use of farm commodities. The rate at which biotechnology in agriculture has swept the U.S. farmland--and beyond--is simply unbelievable. China alone will plant over a million acres of genetically modified cotton. More than half of Canada's canola crop this year will be genetically modified.

American crops will also rely largely upon genetically modified crops--0 million acres worth--nearly a third of the country's total farm acreage. Americans now face the question of how far agriculture practices can and will go in order to reach the production ease and accommodated price they are willing to pay for. Bringing genetically modified food to the nation's table has been a reoccurring question in the minds of consumers and farmers alike. In the past several years, the increasing use and growing supply of genetically altered crops has influenced farmer's supply and affected consumers' demands for agriculturally related products. Consumers are asking themselves, "Just what's coming to dinner?"

For some, this question is easy to answer. For others, this poses a controversial debate into whether genetically modified crops should be allowed into the American food supply. In half a dozen countries, consumer groups and government policy makers have fired a debate saying that while genetically modified food may feed the starving now, the long-term effects may harm public health and hurt agriculture trade in the future. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, over 0 percent of American corn and at least 70 percent of American soybeans are genetically modified. That means the plants genes have been altered to make crops easier to grow and more pest resistant. Seed developers are able to target a single plant trait without the unintended characteristics that may occur with traditional breeding methods. The current U.S. food market contains almost 60 percent genetically modified food. The GM food supply seems to be endless in a world where food is definitely everyone's security.

Consumers have responded to the increase in GM food with challenging questions such as the expected effects of GM food use. The enthusiasm is far from unanimous. For instance, two years ago when protein from Starlink corn was found to have a possible human allergen, over 00 corn products were recalled--everything from Taco Bell taco shells to various corn chips and other snacks sold by Kroger and Safeway. Food companies shelled out $ million in order to settle the consumer class action suit for this case.

In more recent months, the seed production giant Monsanto--hoping to avoid a controversy--notified officials of a system slip of canola strains that had never been commercially approved for use. Although no health risks were discovered, the industry's inability to track the GM food surfaced to the forefront. Consumers now wonder if there will be future health risks as a result of the GM food. There are also rising concerns that foods with transplanted genes may cause allergic reactions. One example is a gene from a nut inserted into another food, possibly triggering allergic reactions in some consumers. Some critics also debate on how accurately the body digests and utilizes biotechnology-derived foods in comparison to traditionally produced foods. Presently there are no visible negative consequences but US citizens wonder what the future will hold. Questions have also arisen pertaining to the environmental effects farmers can expect. Many producers query the debate over the possible occurrence of "super weeds" that would become herbicide resistant and eventually not respond to any form of weed control. Scientists agree that at some point weeds will overcome the seeds' built in herbicides and insects will eventually become immune to the pesticides encountered in GM seed. From an economic perspective, consumer's fears of the unknown effects of GM food places a damper on the acceptance of GM products. The question posing before farmers and economists alike is just how these unanswered questions are going to affect the demand for an expanding breadbasket.

Although the economic effects are not completely clear at present, the farmers' benefits are well defined. From the Eastern Seaboard reaching to the Western hill country, thousands of farmers are "betting the farm" on the new GM crops. GM crops make the farming more efficient. Farmers using GM seed can reduce the costs of insecticides be depleting or significantly decreasing the applications of chemical insecticides aimed at preventing harmful pests such as the European corn borer and the cotton bollworm. Reduced use of insecticides reduces the time the farmer spends in the field and also the costs of applying and reapplying the chemicals. Farmers received higher gross revenues in return although there is a cost.

The herbicide-tolerant, insect-resistant seed creates the need for decreased chemical application, but GM seed usually costs a considerable amount more than traditional seed along with the technology fees that are acquired. The question arises of whether the benefits are more justified than the costs in using the genetically altered crops. In order to clearly define the economic benefits created by GM seed use, several variables must be examined in order to see the real impact on production versus profit. Factors include farm size, operator education and experience, seed price, debt-to-assets ratio, use of marketing or production contracts, irrigation, crop price, use of consultants, and pest pressure. The results of evaluating each variable create an elasticity--the change in a particular impact (pesticide use, yields, or net returns) Conclusions can be drawn across the agricultural sector as more producers embrace the technology. Estimating accurate costs and returns is going to require close examination of the numerous variable factors that could and do have an impact on the farmers' returns.

In a world where prolonged drought, corrupt government policies, and mismanagement of food supplies has led to a worldwide food shortage, some ask how using technology that would enable increased crop yields can even be questioned. Obviously the crop yields have increased by the use of GM seed but what is the real economic profit? Is producer supply going to overcome the consumer demands? Or have the major seed and chemical companies obtained a way to monopolize farmers into using a selected crop choice solely for the companies economic profit? The risks imposed by GM products are a very complex issue that the American public may never understand. Government authorities can offer intervention and work at providing a successful alley for consumers to turn, but until individuals assess the pros and cons of GM foods, they will be vulnerable to emotional appeals and therefore possible biased GM information. As far as the farmers' feelings toward GM crops and production methods, the current results are positive. Farmers have found a way to increase their crop yields while using a decreased amount of herbicides and pesticides that are not only costly but could be environmentally harmful.

One fact is clear though, whether farmers ponder the decision of planting transgenic crops or consumers debate over purchasing select food items, bringing GM food to the American table is creating anticipation of positive benefits--better nutritional, pharmacological, and product qualities--that are promised in the future. Obviously food is still "the foundation of everyone's security" and is still "at the heart of a growing America."
