Heroes and Monsters. Doctor Jekyll qualifies for both titles. A hero is someone who is considered a person who rises to an occasion that other people fear. Also, a person does not have to be a hero to a large number of people, being a hero to one person I important enough. A monster is considered a hero's enemy. The word monster can be a number of things but the main definition is something or someone that is evil and has no remorse for its actions.

Doctor Jekyll falls under the category of hero because of his struggle to get rid of the evil in man. He does this by inventing a potion that will destroy evil in the mind and body in order to make a perfect and righteous human. Doctor Jekyll has a great cause his battle because he has experienced this "evil" first hand. For the reason that no one knows about his project he is only a hero to himself, for now.

Doctor Jekyll is also considered to be a monster. When Jekyll takes his potion the evil takes over his body and his whole personality changes. He changes from a hero into a monster. He begins to hurt people and cause trouble. The worst part is that he even enjoys his transformation and he has no pity or remorse even though he knows that what he does is wrong. For instance he starts a bar riot and he laughs at it as if it was a joke. When he begins to have Ivy living with him he does far greater damage than in the bar. He not only hurts her physically but mentally. He makes Ivy think that he will counter anything she does wrong in an excruciating way. Ivy is scared to leave the house when he is gone and she is afraid to talk to her friends about him. The end result was her death.

The difference between the two sides of Doctor Jekyll is mainly that one is evil and one is good. While Beatrice is gone and Jekyll is staying with Ivy in the from of Hyde he remains Hyde for a long period of time. This is because being Hyde becomes like a drug to him. He loves to be evil. Towards the end when he is on his way to his wedding party Jekyll believes that he and the people around him are safe because he vows to never drink the potion. Little does he know that the evil has taken over his body and can take over when he feels the slightest emotion.

In the end he tried to protect the people he loved by telling them that they could not see him anymore. Then he transformed and almost killed them. Once his friend realized what he was he knew that he had to help Doctor Jekyll. When Hyde was about to attack him, the friend knew that he had to kill him. Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde were now dead.

Is genetically altered food safe? In my opinion the answer is no and it is the topic for this essay. As you read this material I hope I can make it clearer of why I share this opinion. We will be coving many areas such as the process of creating genetically altered foods and the unsafe affects that it could have on humans and our environment.

First of all, genetically altered food is food that has been genetically designed by scientists to be able to withstand certain conditions so it will reach full maturity. For example, there are two common forms of genetic alteration of food crops. In the first, used frequently with soy, the plant is modified in order to be resistant to the Monsanto herbicide Roundup TM so that farmers can apply it to kill weeds without killing the young soy seedling. In the second, often used with corn, the plant is modified to contain within its genetic structure a pesticide called BT (Bacillus thuringiensis). Approximately 50% of all the soy and 8% of the corn acreage planted in the US this year is genetically altered. In addition, much of the canola oil in the US market is from genetically altered plants.

In the research that I conducted I found that there can be some serious health risks associated with genetically altered foods. For example, by altering the genetic composition of the genetic structure of an organism this process introduces new proteins into the human and animal food chains. This means that human beings are now consuming products that have never before been considered foodstuffs. There is concern that these new proteins could potentially cause toxic or allergic reactions, or other health effects. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to predict the allergenic potential of GA foods since allergic reactions typically occur only after the individual consuming the food is sensitized by initial exposure to the allergen. There has already been at least one known health disaster regarding genetically altered products. In 18 the Japanese company Showa Denko marketed a GA version of the supplement L-tryptophan. After the release an estimated 5000 people suffered from an outbreak of Eosinophilia Myalgia Syndrome (EMS). It was initially reported that 7 people died, and 1500 were left with permanent disabilities. Also, the actual process of genetic alteration itself may cause damage to the mammalian digestive and immune systems. A recent study found that rats fed transgenic potatoes (artificially bioengineered to include a gene from another species) showed evidence of organ damage, thickening of the small intestine, and poor brain development.Custom Essays on geneticly altered food

So far I talked about the health issues associated with GA foods but it is also important to realize the environmental risks as well. One of the most frightening aspects of the increasing acreage given over to GA crops is that the pollen from these plants can travel miles from their host via wind and insects and fertilize other non-GA crops or related weed species growing nearby. This has already happened with canola and sugar beet, creating the potential for super weeds. Furthermore, the genes inserted by the alteration process are more biologically vigorous and may be up to 0 times more likely to escape than the plants own genes. We have already seen this process take place with disastrous results with other exotic and invasive species such as kudzu in the south, zebra mussels in our waterways, etc. Even organic food is threatened. Some 87,000 bags of organic corn chips manufactured by Wisconsin-based Terra Prima had to be destroyed when a Dutch importer discovered genetic contamination that had apparently blown over via pollen from a nearby GA plot in Texas where the corn was grown.

In some of the most publicized American research to date, Cornell University scientists reported recently that 44% of monarch butterfly larvae died within four days when fed milkweed that had been dusted with pollen from GA corn, while all the caterpillars fed normal corn pollen survived. These are only a few of the concerns associated with GA foods.

As you can see, I have many reasons to support my opinion that GA foods are not all that safe. Some people have already died because of a connection to GA foods; they must be more thoroughly tests before they become a regular part of our diet.

Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens, shows many different examples of

characters accepting, neglecting and showing a lack of responsibility. Through these

examples we can gain a better understanding of the word "Responsibility". An

examples of taking on responsibility can be seen in the relationship of Pip andOrder custom research paper on How has Great Expectations shaped your understanding of "Responsibility"?

Magwich. The responsibility shifts from Pip to Magwich and back to Pip in the end.

Also there are many examples of lack of responsibility and neglect through Miss

Havisham & Estella and in the family of Joe, Mrs Joe and Pip. Through these parts in

the novel, as readers we gain an understanding of the issues of responsibility, the

surrounding circumstances and the consequences as a result. Responsibility can be

looked at from different angles. It can be accepted for many different reasons, for

example, love, self gratification, and all of these are present in the novel.

Responsibility can have good or bad consequences and these consequences can help us

grow as our knowledge of responsibility is shaped more and more.

Due to Miss Havisham's suffering, she had made it her duty to bring up Estella

and to direct her to break the hearts of all men. This is her revenge for the mishap on

her wedding day (although the reader does not know exactly what happened we know

her heart was broken by her husband to be). By allowing Estella to "break the hearts

and have no mercy", Miss Havisham is neglecting her responsibility in being a good

parent. Miss Havisham had "meant to save her" from her own misery. "At first I

meant no more", but instead "stole her heart away and put ice in it's place". Later in

the novel, when Estella is wedded and abused by her husband, it is then, when Miss

Havisham realises how her want of revenge, that she had burdened on Estella, has

effected Estella's life and made her miserable. "What have I done! What have I

done!" This repeated line uses an exclamation mark instead of a question mark. This

shows that she knows what wrong she has done but it is here in the novel where she is

coming to terms with it. When she took on the responsibility of bringing up Estella in

this way, she did not consider how it could effect Estella in the later part of her life, in

the future. Through this issue in the novel we, as the reader, are subject to the idea of

family responsibility. Dickens shows us that when we neglect responsibility in our

family, particularly as a guardian or a parent, there can be physical consequences and

emotional consequences. In Miss Havisham's case, she suffered emotional

consequences and Estella is subject to both physical and emotional consequences due

to Miss Havisham's lack of family responsibility.

The relationship between Pip and Magwich shows us aspects of responsibility

all throughout the novel. In the very beginning, when Pip is faced by the terrifying

convict of whom he had never met, even though he is scared, he takes on the

responsibility of getting food and brandy for him. Pip does this knowing what

consequences there were of stealing the pie and brandy from his angry and bitter sister,

but still provides Magwich with this act of kindness. Magwich never forgets of this

kindness towards him and this is shown later in the novel when we find out that he is

Pip's benefactor. "I swore that time, sure as ever I earned a guinea, that guinea should

go to you", as Magwich speaks of the time when Pip brought him the food and brandy.

And so Magwich has taken on this responsibility. There are many reasons why he

could have taken on the responsibility. maybe to seek self-gratification in knowing

that he make a gentleman of Pip or maybe for revenge on society to prove that he was

more than just a convict. "Yes Pip dear boy, I've made a gentleman of you."

Eitherway, we learn through this as readers, that people take on responsibility for

different reasons. And at this point in the novel, when Pip realises that Magwich is his

benefactor, the responsibility shifts place again, back onto Pip. Magwich, having to

face the death penalty if found, has left a consequence in his return and Pip feels

obliged to take on the responsibility to get him out safely. Through these series of

events in the relationship between Pip and Magwich, we see how there are different

reasons for accepting responsibility, we also see how some times we don't really have

a choice due to our emotions. For instance in Pip's case his emotions led him to

taking responsibility in getting Magwich safe, to repay him for what he has done. We

also learn how responsibility leads to consequences, both good and bad.

There are very different relationships between Pip & Mrs Joe, and Pip & Joe,

this being because Mrs Joe and Joe are two completely different people. Mrs Joe

being very angry and bitter and Joe, a very kind hearted person. But no matter the

difference in personalities, they both neglect their responsibility for Pip one way or

another, showing a lack of responsibility. Firstly Mrs Joe, although she is looking

after Pip and has brought him up "by hand" she is doing it in the wrong manner. She

is violent, "my sister made a dive at me and fished me up by the hair", she is unkind

"saying nothin more than aweful words" and she has too many expectations of Pip.

For example forcing him to play at Miss Havisham's, for her own benefit (having links

to a higher class). Secondly, Joe, who is a kind, gentle man seems to take great

responsibility for Pip and although he does, take on the responsibility, he is not

fulfilling it by allowing his wife to treat Pip in such an aweful manner and he does not

stop the violent and harsh environment his wife inflicts on Pip. In this way we see

Joe's weakness reflect his lack of responsibility. later on in the novel, we see another

example of neglect of responsibility. This is when Mrs Joe is attacked. Pip "had

deserted Joe" when he should have stayed home with Joe through this hard time. The

relationships between Joe, Mrs Joe and Pip show us neglect of and lack of

responsibility through each of the characters.

The theme of responsibility can be seen all throughout the novel and through

the issues in which it is rooted, as readers, we can develop and shape our

understanding of responsibility. By seeing responsibility or a lack of responsibility

played in the parts of different characters, our knowledge is expanded and we learn

what consequences arise when different types of responsibility is taken on. Through

reading such texts, we view different ideas and different aspects of responsibility and

this is what helps us shape our knowledge of what responsibility is.

February 00 Essay Christina Neophytou

An economic system is a collection of institutions and organisations directing and organising ownership, production and distribution of goods and services.

The type of economic system that exists in Euphoria is a Market Capitalist System. This is a system used in countries like Australia, South Africa and the United States. Since most production, such as agriculture, manufacturing, banking and communications, occurs in the private sector rather than the government sector, private enterprise clearly dominates the market capitalist system. In the case of Euphoria, private enterprise dominates 70% of the system, while the government controls the remaining 0% of the system.

Below is an economic systems diagram showing Euphoria's location in the type of economic system it exists in.

50%

Euphoria would use the market mechanism to make decisions about what type of goods and services people want produced, and how much they would be paid. The market mechanism is a system where by the free forces of demand and supply for goods and services set relative prices, which in turn act as 'signals' to producers of consumer wishes for resource allocation.

Euphoria has a mixed ownership system, as 70% of enterprises are privately owned, while 0% of enterprises are state-owned. Sole traders, partnerships, private companies, public companies and franchises help make up the private sector of the economy.

The country might decide to increase privatization for a number of reasons. Firstly, unlike private enterprise, not all goods and services produced by the government are aimed at making a profit and consequently, this will cost the government a lot of money as most of the time, they are not receiving any profits to make up for the money spent. So the government in Euphoria may decide to privatize some state-owned enterprises in order to lower the cost to governments of running these activities.

Another reason to increase privatization is that the sale of the state-owned enterprise to private owners will raise money for the government. This will allow the government to spend the extra money on more important things. e.g. Schooling in rural areas.

In other cases, handing ownership over to the private sector may be in the best interests of the consumers. This is because private enterprises are more likely to provide better goods and services to consumers, as they are motivated to make profit, resulting in the business being run more efficiently.

#4 The Mission and Romero

The most important issue raised in both The Mission and Romero was that of authority. In both films, there was a battle between what was best for the church and what was best for the people. In Romero, the Church wanted to stay out of the Civil War that was taking place in El Salvador, yet Romero felt a moral obligation to cry out against the injustice taking place in his nation. In The Mission, the Church wanted to take sides in the political dispute over the land in question, and the priest in charge had to decide between obeying his superiors or protecting the people he was supposed to help.

Another similar issue raised in the two movies was that of passivity. In Romero, the Arch Bishop was told to remain passive in the struggle, whereas he felt the need to help his "flock". Also, his own priests were taking up arms in the struggle, and he himself rebuked them, telling them to love rather than kill, so Romero fought with himself as to the degree of resistance required. In The Mission, the head priest at the mission decided to remain passive in the struggle, yet he was killed regardless. The ex-mercenary fought back and met the same death, so it can be said that neither approach to the conflict was acceptable.

In the Modern World, these issues are still somewhat pertinent. The hold of the church is slipping, so the question of whether or not to submit to the traditional church is still relevant. Also, the question of passivity is still very important to Latin America. Venezuela and Columbia are both in the midst of major struggles, and the populations of the two countries now must choose between a diplomatic solution and an armed struggle. Diplomatic means have not succeeded, so it would not b surprising if a major armed struggle erupted in either of these countries.Order custom research paper on Bobo the clown

#5 Distopias

The most noticeable of the three elements of modern life that was satirized in our readings is that of the job. In 1884, the man, instead of being a reporter and revealing state secrets, the dream of every modern reporter, makes up lies to conceal the mistakes of the state. In The Handmaid's Tale, Offred is sent out shopping, and can only show her tokens and be given what she can afford. In Brave New World, the man gives a tour to a group of aspiring new students who will soon be modifying the race of man for a living.

The second element is that of advancement. In all of the distopias, civilization has advanced, and yet it hasn't. In Sleeper, the world's resources are more limited than before, and all of our current medical advances are shown to be lies. In

Cheerleading

Audience Analysis

The audience of this paper would be the same audience as the audience for The Diamondback. They are college students at the University of Maryland, both male and female, whose age range from around 18- years old. They are of the upper-middle to high class and can be of any race. In context to sports, the audience values qualities such as the skill level, the amount of physical ability, and the amount of practice involved in the sport. Most of them will know that cheerleaders attempt to entertain crowds and encourage athletes at sporting events. However, the audience is likely to take cheerleading for granted, and not truly appreciate the effort put forth and the athletic abilities of the cheerleaders themselves. The audience has a negative attitude towards cheerleaders because they believe that cheerleading is trivial and silly. They greatly underestimate the skill and physical ability required in cheerleading.

When one hears the term 'cheerleader' a picture of a pretty girl in a skirt comes to mind. This girl is usually not too bright and is always very peppy. To most, cheerleading is just a form of entertainment in between plays at a football or basketball game. It really does not involve much physical ability because it is just a bunch of cute girls jumping around for attention. People think of cheerleaders as people who are not athletic enough to play a real sport, and they usually do not give much support to any cheerleaders that they know. Cheerleaders and cheerleading do not get the proper respect and admiration that they deserve. Cheerleaders deserve the same amount of respect given to any other athlete of any other sport because cheerleading is just as physically demanding, requires as much skill, and involves the same amount of practice time as any other sport in the world. By getting a better understanding of the sport and of the cheerleaders themselves, the reader will learn to value both the sport and the cheerleaders.

The first thing people need to do is to lose the air-head, valley-girl, oh-my-god-I-have-a-pimple stereotype of cheerleaders. Cheerleaders are not weak, little girls; in fact, cheerleaders are not only girls at all. There are both female and male cheerleaders. Many schools have co-ed competition cheerleading squads. These squads have from as little as one male cheerleader to the usual amount of around ten, but can have many more. Girls do not just join cheerleading just to become popular or to meet cute boys; a lot of them actually come from strong gymnastic backgrounds. Cheerleaders do not only dance around with pom poms while throwing in the occasional, "Go Team!" or "Come on guys! You can do it!" While cheerleaders do use jumps in their routines, there is also a great deal of stunting involved. 'Stunting' is a term used in cheerleading for any toss or pyramid involving two or more people and it always requires a great deal of physical power and skill.

There are two basic types of cheerleading. One type is the competition squad; these are cheerleaders who devote most of their practice time to perfecting a specific routine to be judged at competition. The second type is the spirit squad; these are the cheerleaders that are seen at sporting events. Competition squads choreograph a combination of cheers, dances, stunts, and jumps into a -4 minute (the length of a song) routine. The squad practices this routine and then takes it to competition against other cheerleaders. The spirit squad cheers for sporting events only. They stunt, jump, cheer, and dance as well, but they have no real routine planned out. From now on the use of the terms 'cheerleader' or 'cheerleading' in this paper refers to competition cheerleaders or cheerleading.

Cheerleading, although it might not seem like it, is a lot like football. Both cheerleading and football are sports that require a lot of strength. In football strength is a crucial factor in the game. Players spend hours in the gym lifting weights trying to get stronger so that they will be able to hit harder and take harder hits. Likewise, cheerleaders also have to have a great deal of strength in order to do many of the more complicated stunts. In some stunts cheerleaders may launch one of their own around 0 feet in the air. These stunts require precise timing and require enormous amounts of skill and concentration. The slightest mistake could prove to be disastrous. Where in football, players have to memorize different plays and different formations, cheerleaders have to memorize entire routines. Think of each routine as being an offensive drive in football; cheerleaders have to know exactly where they are going and the route that they take to get there. They also have to know what formations to get into for their different stunts, just like football players have to know the formations or their different plays. Many consider football one of the most dangerous team sports around, but what is often over-looked is the danger in cheerleading. Football is a violent sport and people get injured often. Cheerleading proves to match or even surpass the danger involved in football when a flyer (usually one of the lightest members on the squad who is tossed into the air and the one used in the stunts) is thrown around 0 feet in the air with no pads or safety line to protect her.

Think of cheerleading as a movie. One watches both a movie and a cheerleading routine in the same fashion. When viewing a performance, the audience is usually entertained and pleased, but very little thought is given to how much work was put into the performance. A movie often takes months if not years to complete. There are hours and hours of footage, yet the audience only sees about two hours worth of film. Similarly, practicing a routine for a cheerleading competition takes months and the final piece is only a -4 minute long exhibition. Cheerleading requires hours on top of hours of hard work and practice. Very important, and yet almost always overlooked are the angles and positioning of cameras in films. A great deal of thought is put into exactly where that camera goes to get the directors message across to the audience. The same effort is put into how a cheerleading routine is choreographed for the judges and audience at a competition so that they get the best view of every stunt.

Cheerleading, like football or basketball, is a powerful sport. The people who participate in it - cheerleaders - possess phenomenal physical ability and admirable character traits; they are hard-working, dedicated, and skillful. Just like in any other sport, there is no specific type of cheerleader. Cheerleaders are diverse, which makes cheerleading an entertaining sport because there is always something new to see and appreciate. The sport of cheerleading and the athletes themselves deserve the same amount of credit and acclaim given to any other sport or athlete. It is about time people stopped looking down on the sport of cheerleading and the cheerleaders themselves and started looking at them for what they are worth.

1) How did the economic, geographic, and social factors encourage the growth of slavery as an important part of the economy of the southern colonies between 1607 and 1775?

The climate of the southern colonies was the warmest climate of the three colonial regions. The geography of the southern colonies was broad with coastal plains and some forests. The rich soil, flat ground, and longer growing seasons made the southern colonies dominant producers of the agriculture. Being such great producers of agriculture called for much farm labor, and the more people that were working on the farm, the more money that was produced. Plantations specialized in growing one or two cash crops and were very large. The southern colonists took advantage of the slavery deal, and made the slaves an important part of the economy. Many slaves would work on the farms, and some in the kitchens. The slaves produced lots of economic growth for the southern colonies. The land produced major cash crops of tobacco and rice, therefore most of the slaves were working in the fields.
