"What Will it Take to Halt Sprawl"

Article By Molly OMeara Sheehan

The article What Will it Take to Halt Sprawl deals with three cities in different parts of the world that have had problems with urban sprawl in their societies. The three cities are Washington D.C. of the USA, Santiago in Chile, and Prague in the Czech Republic. They all come from very different backgrounds and have different situations which their people live daily life. The article tries to raise the awareness of the problems that urbanization can cause to the environment and to the people who live in it. The three cities that were focused on in this article are ones that can make a difference in our world. Basically, personal examples of national capital cities can cause a change in the way the rest of the world lives. Buy custom ubran sprawl term paper

The United States as well as Washington leads the world in sprawling development. In the early to mid 100's Washington's population boomed significantly as it built it up to over 1 million then to over million people. As the population built up, the metropolitan area grew even faster. The National Interstate and Defense Highway System Act of 156 launched highway building across the country with the goal of travel between cities, which resulted in more paved roads in between cities. Also because of the U.S. push for more affordable housing it too spread out the cities development. Washington's first attempt to limit the city's expansion was in 160, when they wanted a regional transportation system of railways. They wanted a combination of rail and roads, but it took forever for the metro underground to be built. As a result all the basic structure of roads had all ready been built. Until 000, the metropolitan population rose to nearly 5 million people, and the amount of land grew to more than ,500 square kilometers. Washington's difficulties in stopping sprawl starts with its lack of regional cooperation. It is between Maryland, Virginia, and D.C. The individual counties must compete for the limited funds. In an effort to shift people from cars to transit, D.C. council passed a $1 per day parking fee in 14, but after Congress threatened to veto it, the city decided not to enforce it. The 10 Clean Air Act amendments require all U.S. metropolitan areas to meet standards for air quality or risk losing federal transportation funds.

The 11 Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act made it easier for regions to use federal funds for transit, or bicycles. Both of these two laws that were created made it easier for the public to become aware of the link between transportation policy and air pollution. Washington was in need of installing cleaner polluting buses, because of the poor air quality. It required $50 million to take measures. An organization called the Coalition for Smarter Growth was created to begin acting locally on the problems that face Washington. For example, construction in the Gallery Place Metro station, which had been vacant shows how land can be redeveloped into lively housing, stores, and offices all within walking distance of the station. They figured instead of spending money on new schools in newer areas, they should rebuild and spend money on existing schools. Improving existing schools jumped from 4 percent in 15 to 84 percent in 18. A better mix of housing for different income levels would help reduce travel. The people who have to travel a long way to fill lower paying jobs in wealthy areas would be filled in by people if there could be mixed housing. Washington now realizes that building on previously used lands is a better way to become pedestrian friendly and decrease the use of pollution.

During the Industrial Revolution as factories were built to take advantage of nearby mines and ironworks, the first railway was built in 145 in Prague, Czech Republic. The city grew in both population and land area to about 1 million people by World War II. Prague remained relatively small and compact while Washington and Santiago were booming, because of the communist rule during the time. After the communist rule was lifted, foreign investors rushed to Prague's newly free markets because of its educated workforce. It entered the industrial nations club, and as a prospective member it is receiving aid to improve long-distance transportation links. Its short distance urban transport is declining and most of the money that is received by the city goes to outlying locations not easily reached by public transport. They have begun to build large supermarkets in urban areas, in 17 they had 1 and in 000 they have 5. They are not doing anything for the development in central Prague as more than 1,000 hectares of abandoned industrial sites or brownfields now exist as holes in the fabric of central Prague.

In April 001, an anti-sprawl campaign brought foreign experts on brownfields redevelopment together with local developers and officials. Developers are afraid of buildings on abandoned industrial sites because they know they are polluted. Governments are changing the tax code to make the cost of cleanup deductible for them. An ITDP (Institute for Transportation and Development Policy) campaign targets both governments and companies to more responsibly develop Prague. It sees that the Czech's could more responsibly control land development. As well, consumer pressure could coax the retail industry into considering the environmental implications of the store. It wants to take a lead in committing to locating a certain percentage of stores in more central locations, and improving non-automotive access of existing stores. Prague has entered a regional government which is suppose to prepare regional plans for transportation and set aside areas to be protected as open space.

Santiago, the capital of Chile was too like Washington where its consumption of land outpaced population growth. Earlier on some of the sprawl was caused by unintended results. The socialist government passed a law which enabled poor farmers to own land by making it easier to subdivide large rural tracts into very small lots. The result was that developers snapped up these parcels of land on the city's fringe to build houses. With a military government in the 170's they evicted poor people from the city's core and sent them outwards. There were large tracts of agricultural land in the southern part of the metropolitan area. By 10 Santiago used less than half the urbanized land that Washington, D.C. did, yet they continued sprawl. The government listened to the investors that wanted to expand their land and profits instead of what was best for the people. The region was divided into too many jurisdictions and could not make common decisions amongst each other, basically management chaos of the area.

Santiago has a clash of groups between the SECTRA who believe in public transportation and the MOP who promote highway projects. The problem occurs that the MOP has all the money and is spending it on highway projects. When the national government wanted to build a major highway running through many people's houses they created a group called the Ciudad Viva, or Living City. In the process of fighting against the highway they also began to fight for alternatives such as improved public transportation, and better facilities for bicyclists and pedestrians. Also the Ciclistas Furiosos formed a group, which would take to the streets the first Tuesday of every month to dramatize means of personal transport. Ciudad Viva is like Washinton's Coalition for Smart Growth. They point out that only 0 percent of the people in Santiago can afford to commute by car so it would benefit the government to shift some of the space used by cars to the express of public busways. Yet the citizen activism has produced limited results, although it has increased the speed the traffic flow with the added bus lanes. The activist groups claim that they will continue to work on helping to stop sprawl and help the environment.

Washington, Santiago, and Prague are all very different situations but I feel that they can all be helped in the same type of manner. I feel that what many of the organizations in different countries are doing the right thing by trying to make a change. Looking at it now makes it seem like it will be very difficult in the future to stop the expansion and sprawl of cities. Although, what it takes is a complete and full effort by us, the people to try to help a solution. I think that the only way to prevent pollution and create more public transportation is to get the public informed on the issues and once they are informed they can be supportive of achieving new solutions. Changing companies or investors is not going to work, but governments will eventually listen if the people all unite and force a change, even if it means restructuring how the government operates or the people in control. In many cases it is too hard or expensive to make total changes to the programs that a city takes. Although, people themselves can make a conscious choice to help out the environment and contribute to the worlds best interests. The governments in the cities within this article are not putting the funds into the right parts of society resulting in these issues. They are building outwards when they could be helping to rebuild the central part. This will not only help transportation but the poor as well. I feel that the way for the world to make a change in urban sprawl is to have personal examples of cities that made sacrifices in their own, showing it can be done and it is a just cause. Without someone starting to take action others will most likely not follow, but with an example to follow they could see the prospects of a bright future and want to be like that. I feel this is the only way for us to make a difference in todays growing world.

The United States Economy

The economy over the last eighteen months had started with moderate production, but began to slope into a recession causing the unemployment rate to rise. Beginning in the fourth quarter of the year 001, the Federal Reserve decided to lower its federal funds rate to 1-/4 %( this was the lowest rate in the last 40 years). With this move the economy expanded quickly not soon after the change. Consumer Spending increased considerably and housing production was on the rise with the help of good weather. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) had increased at an annual rate at an excess of 6 %. With the inflation adjusted at such a low rate, interest investments began to decline and business investments for an increase of capital had increased. The Fiscal Policies action to lower taxes, give investment incentives, and increase higher spending are stimulating the aggregate demand curve in a positive way. With a combination of a decline in our foreign exchange value of the dollar, the unemployment rate at a low percentage maintaining around 4.5 %, and economic growth strengthening, our economy was heading on the right track.

In the beginning of the year of 00, the pace of the economy was still rolling at a steady pace, mainly because of the unchanged pace of 001. The increase in real (GDP) was taking off rapidly with a surge of government spending on military defense, and weather related conditions which in turn was destroying property. Inflation was on the rise due to higher energy costs, but soon dampened a bit causing the inflation expectations to remain stabilized in the first half of the year. The competitive pressures of the foreign markets soon started to limit the growth of profits for the economy. With this in mind the (FOMC) decided to keep the federal funds rate at 1-/4 % unchanged. The (FOMC) thought it would be the best interest for the economy to achieve its long run objectives to keep the rate this low, but still faced the possibility that economic growth with the relatively high unemployment rate and lack of price pressures will cause the economy to fall short of its given potential.

The outlook of the end of the 00 year and surfacing the 00 year tends to look promising. The members of the Board of Governors and the Federal Reserve Bank, whom all participate in deliberations of the (FOMC), expect the economy to expand rapidly over the next six quarters. (GDP) is expected to rise a ¼ % for the year 00 and ½ % for the year 00. The 00 deficit is expected to be less than one percent of the total (GDP). If, growth promoting policies are pursued and withhold on spending is exercised, deficits will be both small and temporary. The government will need to higher interest rates to induce investment spending. Write my Essay on The United States Economy

With all done and said, I like the look our economy is heading, especially after the September 11, 001 terrorist attack. I think the citizens are regaining faith in our government's authority and are now increasing their spending on consumption goods, as well as investments in the stock markets which is slowly increasing after one of its all time lows. Hopefully our economy will exceed in the future comings to maintain as the most powerful nation abroad.

Columbus and the Spanish Conquest

Columbus was a talented navigator from Genoa he wanted to benefit from the victory at Granada. He served the Portuguese crown for years he had also been a slave trader trading between Africa and the Atlantic islands. Columbus had been begging the courts of Portugal, England, France, and Spain to give him the ships and me to attempt to reach eastern Asia by sailing west across the Atlantic. There was a problem with this though. Columbus thought the world circumference at only 16,000 miles. So he said he would reach Japan or China by sailing west ,000 miles. But the Portuguese laughed at this because they put the worlds circumference at 6,000 miles. They told Columbus that he is mad if he tried that because he would perish on the huge ocean. With the fall of Granada Columbus had another chance to pled his case. Isabella who now had men and resources to spare grew more receptive to his request.Order custom research paper on Columbus and the Spanish Conquest

She made him "Admiral of the Ocean Sea" in charge of a fleet of two caravels, the Nina and the Pinta together with a lager ,square rigged ship The Santa Maria which Columbus made his flag ship.

Columbus left the port of Palos in August of 14 , Columbus headed south to the Canaries, to pick up provisions and sailed west across the Atlantic . As they traveled the crew became restless when October came around but on the 1 of October they spotted land. They splashed ashore on San Salvador, now Watlings island in the Bahamas. Chris was convinced that he was somewhere in the East Indies some where near China or Japan. Columbus called the local inhabitants Indians. For several months he poked about the Caribbean , mostly along the coast of Cuba and while doing so he ran the Santa Maria onto rocks the ship had to be abandoned. Because of this Columbus left a garrison of men behind on Hispaniola. When he returned in late 14 all of his men had been killed by the Tainos. After that Columbus made more voyages in quest of China. After his third voyage they shipped hi back to Spain in chains in 1500. Although later restored to royal favor he died in 1506.

Ex-soldiers and peasants were taken across the Atlantic to settle the new land. With them they carried seeds for Europe cereal crops and livestock, including horses, cows, sheep, goats, and pigs. The islands did not have fences so the animals went around the island freely eating every thing up. Because of that the Tainos food supply soon became threatened. The Spaniards forced the increasingly malnourished Indians to work for them. With all of this happening the native population declined catastrophically. By the 1514 only ,000 able-bodied adults remained on Hispaniola, from a population that was at least one million. This same thing happened to Cuba, Jamaica, and other small islands. Soon after all the Indians were dying we had African slave to replace them. The Spaniards continued their new world explorations as the years went by. One geographer name the new continent "America" which he named in honor of his informant the explorer Amerigo Vespucci. Soon Spain conquered Mexico and there they found treasure they had been seeking. Hernan Cortes and his small army of 400 men were the one to discover the fabulous city Tenochtitlan, the Aztec empire. The Aztec leader sent rich presents to persuade the Spaniards to leave but it had the opposite effects. Because of cultural misunderstanding war broke out. But the thing was that both sides had different objectives. Europeans tried to settle matters on eh battlefield and expected to kill many enemies. But the natives fought to gain captives whether for sacrifice or to replace the tribal losses through adoption.

When Cortes entered Tenochtitlan in 151 he seized Moctezuma the Aztec ruler as a prisoner and hostage. Though overwhelmingly outnumbered Cortes and his men began to destroy Aztec religious objects and replace them with images of the Virgin Mary or other Catholic saints. In response to this while Cortes was away the Aztecs rose against the intruders, Moctezuma was killed and the Spaniards were driven out with Heavy losses. But the smallpox the Spaniards left behind soon began killing Aztecs by the thousands. The next year Cortez returned with thousands of the Tlaxcalans warriors and he built warships armed with cannon to dominated lake Texcoco which the city lay on. After defeating the Aztecs the city lay in ruins but Spain built Mexico city on the ruins of Tenochtitlan.

Cabeza de Vaca made his way back to Mexico city in 156 after an overland journey that took him form Florida through Texas. Hernando de soto landed in Florida in 15 and roamed through muck of the southeastern US in quest of gold and silver. He crossed the Mississippi in 1541 wandered through the Ozarks and eastern Oklahoma. During these times of travel Spanish Priests did their best to convert Thousands of North Americans Indians to the Catholic faith. After that they started to build missions one of the first was in Virginia.

Today we still have missions all around the USA and Mexico. There are still native Americans that live in Mexico and all over the USA. Also there are many different cultures that live in America today and in Mexico. Not only do Europeans live here we have Chinese, Africans, Mexicans etc. We have people from all around the world who have settled and made America there home for generations.

Economic, geographic, and social factors encouraged the growth of slavery as an important part of the economy in the southern colonies between 1607 and 1775. The growth of slavery grew tremendously between these years. Slaves contributed largely to the South's population. New fertile land meant an increased need for slave labor. Slaves were treated horribly by their masters, and lived under terrible conditions.

Many lands were immensely hospitable to corn and tobacco cultivation. Settlers often planted tobacco and corn in their fields. The growing of these crops required labor. The Virginians, especially, needed labor, to grow corn for subsistence and to grow tobacco for export. They had just figured out how to grow tobacco, and in 1617 they sent off the first cargo to England. The Virginians were ready to become the masters of their slaves. By 161, a million black slaves had already been brought from Africa to South America and the Caribbean, to the Portuguese and Spanish colonies, to work as slaves.

In the deepest South, slave life was especially severe. The climate was hostile to death, and the labor was life-draining. Slaves from Africa were captured and herded among sweltering ships, bounded for the gruesome "middle passage" on which death rates ran as high as twenty percent. Terrified survivors were eventually shoved onto auction blocks in New World ports. Tobacco was a less physically demanding crop than those of the deeper South. Tobacco plantations were larger and closer to one another than the rice plantations. The size and proximity of these plantations permitted the slaves more frequent contact with friends and relatives.

A change of traditions..

B) My family's traditions have changed so much since we have moved to America. We don't cook the same or talk the same or even read the same. I miss speaking Italian I even miss writing it and it is funny to look back and think that one day I would miss writing at all cause I had to write so much in elementary school the whole alphabet and I used to get frustrated but now it comes so easy. I wish we could still do the same things we used to but my Father says that here we have to be normal here we have to be Americans he says this so often that when I close my eyes I can imagine the exact expression that he has on his face while he says it. ( A scrunched up nose and narrowed twinkling eyes and with a big broad fake smile across his face.) ; But I guess I have adjusted , I had to.

G) Everyday at work this BOY walks by he looks like he is about Milo's age. He is very cute but he appears to be very clumsy because every time he passes he always looks in my direction, and so much that he always tends to trip on something or run into someone or something however I find it kind of funny and well....kind of cute. I wonder if he will ever try to talk to me? I wonder if he is courting anyone? Could I be in love or something wait no I don't even know this mystery boy but I want to. Maybe sometime I can say something to him. Maybe tomorrow I will try to sell him some fruit. Ohh but I were the fruit taken home with him. He looks Irish he has BRIGHT blue eyes and dark blond hair he is quiet tall too. I think I am going to try to talk to him. Father always said I was too outgoing but he also said he always loved that about me. So maybe other people including this boy will too....hopefully

Equiano and The Middle Passage

Writers write for many different reasons, whether it may be to entertain, inform, or persuade. Writing would be nothing without diction and tone. Diction is the author's choice of words, and tone it the voice used to reveal the writers mood, feeling on emotion, these two go tighter because the specific words used give the feeling of the story. Equiano's purpose in writing this normative was to inform everyone of the mistreatment of the slaves on the middle passage in which he does by using these three different tones depression, frustration and amazement.

The first use of tone that comes up is the tone of helplessness. In the beginning to this narrative he is describing where the slaves were and how they were all compressed into tiny spaces. There was nothing that they could do. This brings out the feeling of helplessness. "… We were all pent up tighter, like so many sheep in a field…"(pg.48). He felt like an animal, that's how bad it was. No way of communication, no one to comfort you. One would start to feel lost and that's how he felt, "…rather than give any of them to us to eat…" (pg.46). This quote describes how hungry he was and that he had no way of getting food. He uses all of this to help the audience reading and tell them very bluntly what was going on on this ship.

The second tone that is very frequently apparent throughout this narrative is frustration. "I envied the freedom they enjoyed…"(pg 45). How low can a person feel? It's evident that he wasn't used to this sort of treatment. Equiano wants to be able to be out on the deck and learn how run the ship. For him, his independence is taken away which makes him feel discomfiture. When you are able to pick and choose what you want to do and suddenly that is all taken away from you then you feel frustrated. When he and his sister were split apart after they were taken he was also frustrated because he couldn't do anything about it. Equiano grabs out this feeling and reels in the reader to almost make them feel like they are in the story.

Custom writing service can write essays on Equiano and the Middle Passage

"… I first saw flying fishes…"(pg 47). In this quote we see the feeling and tone of amazement. It's like for the first time. It almost makes the reader excited and want to go on reading. "I also now first saw the use of the quadrant" (pg.47). When the ship had reached it' destination he began to see lots of new things. The quadrant was on 6thing he was amazed by. He wanted to know more. "…I was now more persuaded than ever, that I was in another world…"(pg. 47). This quote just verifies he feelings about the flying fishes and quadrants. This arrangement brings out lots of other feelings like curiosity and it keeps the reader on their toes pushing them to read more.

It has already been said that tone and diction will make or break the way we read a story or passage. In Equiano's account of the middle passage, great emphasis is put on the three leading tones depression, frustration, and amazement. Essentially Equiano's purpose in writing the narrative as to inform everyone the mistreatment of the slaves on the middle passage; Which he does with the use of tones. I believe that he did a great job and made me interested in reading on.

bacon and Swift Preparing for the Future

Through out the years of human existence there have always been issues that come from the study of science and technology. The human race has to make important decision about these issues. The ways these decisions have been made through the years has varied. The two English writers, Francis Bacon and Jonathan Swift, discussed some of these issues. Bacon¡¦s approach to discussing these problems was through a very structured method. He did this in his essay Ovum Organism where he describes the four idols of the humanity. On the other hand, Swift used satire to illustrate his views by story form. Gulliver¡¦s Travels is a story by Swift that discusses his political views and social views.

The Four Idols discussed by Francis Bacon in his essay Ovum Organism are Tribe, Cave, Market, and Theater. The ¡§Idols of the Tribe¡¨ hinder people¡¦s understanding because of human nature. Some examples of this are people trying to make things fit into patterns, looking for evidence to support their conclusions, having trouble conceiving of the finite or infinity, are affected by what they want to believe, having since fool them, and lacking to generalize or be abstract. The ¡§Idols of the Cave¡¨ hinder people¡¦s understanding because of individual shortcomings. Four individual shortcomings are favoring ideas that support previous conclusions, differences or similarities, antiquity or novelty, the part to the exclusion of the whole and vice versa. The third, the ¡§Idols of the Marketplace¡¨ hinders people¡¦s understanding because of words. This idol comes from people imagining and naming things that do not exist and giving multi-meaning of one word. The last of Bacon¡¦s idols is the ¡§Idols of the Theater,¡¨ which hindering understanding based on a system of philosophy, theology, or tradition (Points Made by Francis Bacon in The Four Idols). Bacon¡¦s writing is very organized and step format. He goes through each point in detail before moving on to the next point. This structure is seen in his creating of the Scientific Method, which he developed. The Scientific Method is a general set of steps that direct scientist in their approach to their studies.

Jonathan Swift¡¦s Gulliver¡¦s Travels is a story about a surgeon, named Gulliver, who takes voyages all over the world. Every voyage results in him being shipwrecked or banished and abandon. He makes it safely to land; however, the islands that he seeks refuge on have never been explored before. Each of the islands is unique. On the island of Lilliput, the people are really small, so Gulliver is a giant to them. On another island he comes across, he is the small one compared to the natives. He, also, is picked up by the floating island of Laputa this island was full of intellectual people. All they do throughout the day is to calculate, philosophy, and debate one another. Their whole existence is focused on intellectual thought and they therefore do not leave room to have any realistic or practical knowledge. The last journey Gulliver makes, he is abandoned on an island where horses have reason and the human like creature have no reason. The horses called Houyhnhnms live on the island in a utopian society. Gulliver learns to love the Houyhnhnms and despised the human-like creature called Yahoo. Custom Essays on Bacon and Swift Preparing for the Future

Francis Bacon¡¦s The Four Idols refer to the flaws in human nature, which keeps mankind from becoming a perfect society. These flaws of not understanding ourselves, personal shortcomings, and miscommunication affect in every aspect of the human society (Points Made by Francis Bacon in The Four Idols). Because of these flaws, humans will never be able to perform or understand science and technology completely. Bacon is writing his essay as a scientist. He see the corruption of science of his day and sees how it will carry on through the years to come. Bacon uses his understanding of the problems that he recorded in The Four Idols to come up with a systematic way of studding science. This systematic way of studying science later became know as the Scientific Method. In his Scientific Method he sets up an order of operations that should be taken to get correct data and results from research. While the Scientific Method is pacific to science and technology, Bacon¡¦s Four Idols deal with every aspect of human life. In both cases Bacon presents the problems and resolutions straight forwardly and for this reason his writings are still being used today.

Jonathan Swift¡¦s Gulliver¡¦s Travels, also, discusses the problems that are common in human culture. Just as Bacon¡¦s works can be pacific for science and technology, part of Swift¡¦s Gulliver¡¦s Travels focus on those same issues. He uses a story swamped with satire to show his point of view. Each of the travels that Gulliver takes focuses on different important problems Swift saw in the England during his life. However, these issues are still true and evident in the world today. Swift deals with the political problems along with science and technology. The voyage where Gulliver is picked up by the floating Island is Swift¡¦s strongest satire against a sole abstract world, which included mathematics, philosophy, and other sciences. The Laputans represent a society that is based on abstract idealism. Although the Laputans can derive anything on paper, they have no practical skills. Swift describes this best

Their houses are very ill built, the walls bevil, without one right angle in any apartment; and this defect ariseth from the contempt they bear for practical geometry; which they despise as vulgar and mechanic, those instructions they give being too refined for the intellectuals of their workmen; which occasions perpetual mistakes. And although they are dextrous enough upon a piece of paper, in the management of the rule, the pencil, and the divider, yet in the common actions and behavior of life I have not seen a more clumsy, awkward, and up handy people, nor so slow and perplexed in their conceptions upon all other subjects, except those of mathematics and music. They are very bad reasoners, and vehemently given to opposition, unless when they happen to be of the right opinion, which is seldom their case. Imagination, fancy, and invention, they are wholly strangers to, nor have any words in their language by which those ideals can be expressed; the whole compass of their thoughts and mind being shut up within the two forementioned sciences. (Swift 418)

After showing this extreme, Swift shows the extreme in the other direction. The next journey Gulliver takes, he finds himself on an island with horses that have the capability to think and reason. The horses called Houyhnhnms represent another extreme in human culture that we can shift toward. This one extreme is of total reason. While being able to reason these horses have no idea of desiring. F. R. Leavis in ¡§The Irony of Swift¡¨ says ¡§Swift did his best for the Houyhnhnms, and they have all the reason, but the Yahoos have all the life¡¨(Jonathan Swift, Gulliver¡¦s Travels ). An example of this is in the marriage rituals of the Houyhnhnms.

Courtship, love, presents, jointures, settlement, have no place in their thoughts, or terms whereby to express them in their language. The young couple meet and are joined, merely because it is the deternination of their parents and friends;¡KBut the violation of marriage, or any other unchastity, was never heard of; and the married pair pass their lives with the same friendship and mutual benevolence that they bear to all others of the same species who come in their way, without jealousy, fondness quarreling, or discontent. (Swift 456)

Swift view humans as being like the Houyhnhnms if human throw out science and technology and ignore the part of our minds that give people creativity. If people do this, we will become dull logical people. Although Swift prefers this extreme over the other he see that it is not good either.

Although Francis Bacon and Jonathan Swift writing are totally different they both make similar stances on the modern issues about science and technology. Bacon sets up a structure that is an aid to people. His aid helps people realize the problems early and gives them a way to deal with them. On the other hand, Swift uses satire to make it obvious of the dangers of these issues not being resolved correctly. Both Bacon and Swift saw the importance of having a balance in society. They realized that there are many dangers and troubles that come from becoming totally focused in any one field, especially as a whole society. The things they discussed and the way they dill with it is still being used today in our issues with science and technology. They saw the problems of their day and saw that they would not change but increase in magnitude over the years. They made their writings capable of being used throughout the years.

~ William Carlos Williams

Despite the superiority people grant to our tumultuous modern society, many of us find ourselves wishing for the comfort of the country lives of our ancestors. Small-town and farm life have been glorified by many artists in many different forms. In "The Red Wheelbarrow" William Carlos William uses the power of his words to create a strikingly vibrant, symbolic image of some of the essential elements in farm life hard work and reliance on nature for nourishment and prosperity. These symbolic elements help us to understand the opening stanza "So much depends upon."

Williams opens his poem with a very dramatic image "a red wheel barrow." He grabs our attention to the wheelbarrow by painting it the eye-popping shade of red, but he gets us to focus our attention on this image by dragging out the line, creating a break in the word "wheelbarrow." This strategy forms an emphasis on these words and prolongs the reading of them, causing us to wonder, "what is the importance of this wheelbarrow?" To me, the wheelbarrow is a symbol of the hard work done by farmers.

Although I was not raised on a farm or in a small town, my family tries to retain much of the work ethic of our ancestors. For generations my family lived in the small farming community of Peculiar, Missouri. During World War II, my grandfather and his brothers signed up with the armed forces and, although they were scattered all over the globe, they tried to stay true to what their community had taught them. They believed that nothing comes for free; you have to work for it and that everyone has a job that they need to do. For me, the wheelbarrow of this poem symbolizes this sort of work ethic. In a farming community everyone is important because we all need to work together for the common good.

The next element Williams introduces us to is that of rainwater. In the second stanza, he parallels the unnatural break from the previous stanza by adding one in the word "rain water." I believe that the rainwater is a symbol of the dependence of man on the grace of nature. Farmers need the rain to nourish their land; without it their crops will fail. A year of poor crops can be disastrous for a farming community. Without the rain to replenish the land, the wheelbarrow (symbolizing hard work) would be useless. No matter how much work you put into a task, nothing will come from it without nourishment. The rainwater could also simply symbolize the renewal of the land. If the land is not able to properly renew itself, it can fight back against man. In the mid-1800s, my great grandparents moved to America from Ireland because of the great potato famine. This famine was caused because the majority of the population had become reliant on the potato crop for food. However, so many people had been growing the crop for so long that the land didnt have a chance to renew itself and a fungus attacked the crop. Because of this, there wasnt enough food to feed everybody. Millions of people died and many left their homelands to start a new life in a new land.

In the final stanza, Williams completes the image by adding one last element white chickens. Williams creates a contrast to the wheelbarrow by making the chickens white rather than brown or grey. This contrast makes the chickens stand out as an important symbol in the poem. To me, the chickens represent the prosperity that comes from hard work and the nourishment of the land. I, personally, have not had much first-hand experience with chickens. When I was little my grandfather, after his retirement, kept a small farm with a few animals - chickens being one of them. One day, my sisters and I arrived at my grandparents house a little earlier than they had expected. My grandmother told us that my grandpa was out in the garage and then sent us out to say hello to him. When we turned the corner to go into the garage, we saw our grandfather about to slaughter a chicken which was meant to be that nights dinner. We gasped, which distracted my grandpa; causing him to decapitate the chicken in the wrong place. As my sisters and I soon found out, if you dont slaughter a chicken in exactly the right way, it causes the nerve endings to not be completely detached and the chicken will still be alive for a few moments. In those few moments, the headless chicken managed to chase my sister half way back to the house. After that incident, my sisters and I usually stayed as far away from the chicken coup as we could. However, now that I am older, I can understand the importance of animals to a farm. The upkeep of animals requires a lot of hard work and money. In return, animals provide farmers and their families with meat, milk, and eggs.

The Red Wheelbarrow is not just a poem that exists to provide us with a beautiful image; I believe it is a comment on how, in farm life, even the smallest thing can have a great purpose. The hard work of the farmers, the renewal of the land through rain, and the nourishment that animals provide are all interconnected; without one of these elements, the others can not function. People rely on the nourishment that crops and animals provide for them in order to put in the hard work a farm requires, but without the nourishment of the rain the farmers hard work would be in vain. So much depends upon each of these elements in order for there to be prosperity.

In our times, the police have become the criminals. Some police are using their power to do bad things, and society has come to fear police. Systems of law enforcement need change. The courts have failed the police, and the police have turned to other means of justice. We must stop the corruption in the police force.

I have respect for the police, and the job they do. Policemen are a selected few who do a dangerous job. Police have done many great things to help improve communities, help people during their off duty hours and stand strong in face of many fears. The police trying to enforce the law are on the streets in all types of weather. Instead of being at home with their families on holidays they are working to keep peace. Everyday, they step out in a world where violence is considered appropriate.

Across America, police have been involved in scandals and drugs. They are abusing the power that they have been given. The communities have begun not to trust the police because of their conduct toward the citizens. People have been beaten and harassed by the guys in blue. People in the communities have seen the police push individuals around and take things from individuals for no reason. People receive the wrong message. The public no longer can see a difference between the police and criminals.

Problems like police corruption have no easy answer. However, there are steps to target the root of the problem. We must start by holding officers accountable for their actions. If an officer uses too much force, he should be put on probation. The people must show the police that misconduct will not be tolerated. The attitudes must change within the departments. When the departments no longer ignore the complaints of excessive force, then the polices attitudes will begin to change. Screening of officers needs to be done more often. More psychologists and criminologists are needed to spot those officers who are in trouble or on the brink of mental illness. A good start would be to teach the superior officers to recognize warning signs like lateness or angry mode swings.Order custom research paper on Police are The Real Criminal

Many problems between the police and citizens are miscommunication. Critics say, Racial and social classes have become a difficult problem because of communication. Education is important for changing things. The academy should teach classes on communication and corruption. The classes can help new officers deal with many problems that they will face in the field. Policing needs to meet the challenges with racial and social classes (Can...?).

Police should be paid a better salary. They need enough income to run a house and finance a family without having to take a second job. A higher income would help to take away some of the money pressure for policemen. Local police officers make about $1,00 a year. The salary may vary from location to location.

Police corruption is a problem that everyone needs to address. Corruption affects us in many ways from driving to feeling safe. The public may not know the causes for the problem, but there is no reason for the corruption to continue. The law enforcement system may never be perfect, but improvements may promote public support and cooperation. The public, government officials and law enforcement departments must work together to combat the problems of corruption.

Antigone

In reaction to ~{!0~}Antigone,~{!1~} I truly enjoyed reading it, however, not as much as I did reading ~{!0~}Oedipus Rex.~{!1~} That~{!/~}s probably because I~{!/~}ve already gotten used to Sophocles~{!/~}s notion of drama. What really amazed me was how Sophocles wrote this play before writing ~{!0~}Oedipus Rex,~{!1~} yet, wrote it as a sequel to his future play, ~{!0~}Oedipus Rex.~{!1~} Did he know he was going to add the prequel of ~{!0~}Oedipus Rex,~{!1~} or did he think of the idea later on? Moreover, if he thought of it in advance, why didn~{!/~}t he just write the prequel first, moving in sequential order?

In some ways, this play was reminiscent of ~{!0~}Oedipus Rex.~{!1~} For example, in both plays, early signs of foreshadowing appeared, hinting out the story~{!/~}s outcome. Reading further into each, one can immediately smell the trouble awaiting the kings! Although the outcome became obvious, I still found it a pleasure to read, eagerly waiting for the ending.

In addition, the storyline was a very believable one. It consisted of characters that were perfect for their parts. At times, Sophocles added a little humor by having characters make fun of each other, while arguing in their disputes. For instance, when Creon was arguing with Teiresias, Creon didn~{!/~}t want to hear the bad news, accusing Teiresias of bribery to bring forth such a forecast (considering his prophecies were always correct). In doing so, Creon~{!/~}s typical use of humor to get his message across kicked in, making the play amusing to read. He told Teiresias, ~{!0~}The generation of prophets has always loved gold.~{!1~} Furthermore, the tone was very sad, considering the king~{!/~}s fate was a horrible one. Like King Oedipus losing his father and mother, so too, King Creon lost his son and wife. Although it was a tragedy, this was a fun play to read!

Lord of the Flies #1

Jack

Jack is the powerful creeping darkness in the way that he starts out as the leader of the choirboys in chapter one and by the last chapter is the leader of the savage youth group. Jack Merridew is a very arrogant character that assumes leadership of the tribe through instigation and turning the older kids against Ralph and manipulating the littluns. The only apparent reason that he is turning everyone against Ralph to take control of the tribe is the fact that he can't stand not being the most powerful.

Ralph

Custom Essays on Analysis of Lord of the Flies-Main Characters

Ralph is one of the elder boys that is the mainly the leader of the society of kids throughout the story. Throughout the story Ralph is proving his honorable attentions of keeping the order in the island and be the arbiter of the island, while maintaining the majority of the children in favor of his ruling. He is a soldier; he struggles throughout the story to establish a true democratic order. He wants all the boys to survive and he wants to be rescued, that is why he struggles to maintain order.

Piggy

Piggy is the voice of reason throughout the whole book, well until he dies. His is physically weak and likes to complain, but he is very intelligent and sees every aspect of the situations at hand. Because he is considered a nerd he is usually ignored. He is the first person that Ralph meets and they develop close ties, especially after they are banished. Piggy wants to survive and get off the island just as Ralph does.

Simon

Simon is kind of a neutral character in the story. He does what is asked of him and helps the younger kids. He is the religious character in the story. He comes to understand the Lord of the Flies and the beast on the mountain. He understands from the Lord of the Flies that the evil is inside of mankind and not something that mankind acquires. When he tries to tell the rest of the tribe the revelation that he had they accidentally kill. Simon's motivation is to get off the island and do whatever it'll take to survive .

Roger

Roger is a sadistic and twisted soul. He would slit another's throat just because. He gains joy from forcing misery unto others. He bullies most of the younger kids and kills Piggy. He goes throughout the story causes chaos for the reason of wanting to.

Foils

Ralph & Jack/Roger

Through Jack and Rogers' heinous actions and thoughtless actions of rushing off into the jungle hunting hogs, and bullying littluns they help bring out Ralph's honorable intentions and leadership qualities. When Jack grabbed the conch shell and blew it to summon the tribe and proclaim Ralph's incompetence it showed how much of a kind person Ralph is.

Ralph & Jack/Superman & Lex Luthor

I compare many things between these fours persons. Ralph is struggling to protect the littluns and is usually in confrontation with Jack. Superman is trying to protect the world and civilians and is usually confronted by Lex Luthor. As Lex Luthor used kryptonite to weaken Superman to a state of incapacity in order to control the society, Jack did the same by using the conch shell as the symbol of power to take control of the tribe eventually as Lex Luthor did society.

In Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, the roughness and difficulties of society has led two men into a world of treacherous hardships and heartless people who have absolutely no tolerance whatsoever. But through these struggles of agonizing troubles and hard paths, came a bond that in those days, was rare and uncommon in a place where it was every man for himself. But despite this strong and everlasting friendship, they still cannot escape the fact that one of them plainly does not belong in a world of speeding meteors that hit so hard and so fast, leaving the two men with only themselves to look out for, for the support and compassion needed for their survival. In this world where the strong overpower the weak, finding amusement in proving their superiority, the two men find themselves unable to escape the grasps of the cruel and intolerant society of man.

Passage 16 describes the event where Carlson decides that Candy's dog should not live another day and decides right then and there that it will be eliminated from the world. A little while before this passage, Carlson had still been discussing with Candy about having his dog shot. He explained that the old and useless dog wouldn't even feel a thing the way he'd shoot it. In fact, it wouldn't be so much of a loss since Slim's female dog, Lulu, had just given birth to nine puppies, four in which were drowned. This action can also be known as survival of the fittest, in which the world has no tolerance for the weak, and leave them to perish. Slim would surely agree to allow Candy to have one of the newborn puppies. A little bit after this passage, Candy explained to George and Lennie that he should've been the one to shoot his own dog, and not let some stranger do it for him. This remark immediately and evidently signifies a sense of foreshadowing that'll something similar to this situation will occur, but this time, to George and Lennie. This can be deduced because readers know the comparison of Candy's dog with Lennie, and how Steinbeck created Candy's old dog to not only show readers the intolerance for the weak in society, but also to show the dog being parallel to Lennie.

In society, life is nothing but a means of survival of the fittest, in which the strong overpower and conquer the weak, leaving them to perish in a world where people's heads just turn the opposite direction without even the slightest care. Candy's continuous begging and pleading to let his old companion live because he had owned him ever since it was a pup, merely had any affect whatsoever on Carlson's cruel and heartless soul, and his constant determination that the dog must be eliminated eventually becomes reality when Slim, the most respected guy on the ranch, finally agrees that the dog must go. Candy's companionship with the dog and his love for it meant absolutely nothing to Carlson and the others at the ranch and unfortunately, probably never will. Carlson, regardless of Candy's affection, thinks that he's actually doing everyone a favor, including Candy by killing the stinky dog who doesn't even have enough teeth to chew with. He figures that anything that old would be much happier out of this world. In other words, he does what he did because it was what HE wanted, or what was in his best interest to do. These actions in which Carlson killed Candy's dog without a care, establishes the cruel and injust world where only the strongest survive, and the weak are left to perish without any signs of protection in the harsh and uncaring society. This is true even until today in our very own food chain, where only the strongest species stay on top and prevail, while the weak and defenseless species are eaten, and destined to become prey for life. Candy knows this, and once he is too old to contribute to the ranch, he too, will be eliminated by people more capable than he is. In this means of "survival of the fittest" only the people good enough are left to survive while the ones that are absolutely useless, are removed, in this case, Candy's old dog.

Steinbeck's tone in this passage also shows the harsh cruelness in Carlson's words. "Le's get it over with, we can't sleep with him stinkin' around in here." Those simple words set up the pitiless people that were part of humanity at the time, and even people of today. This gives readers a mood that Carlson isn't going to take back his idea, and is determined to get rid of the dog no matter what. Steinbeck also shows irony in this passage by making it so that Slim, the "prince" of the ranch, who was the most understanding and compassionate person on the ranch, did not refuse to let Carlson shoot the dog. Readers would think of all people, Slim would be in Candy's defense, but not only did he not help defend Candy, he practically just turned his head the other way. Cheap Custom Essays on Of mice and men

This passage proves significantly to the novel because it shows readers how heartless society can get, how intolerant stronger and "fitter" people can be towards people less capable than they are. In this world, the strong will always conquer the weak, and the weak will always be left powerless and unprotected from the grips of humanity. Carlson's ever- continuing determination towards Candy's dog shows society's mercilessness in eliminating the weak, but also show the rest of the world's feelings toward people less capable than they as well. Begging a pleading will never be rewarded, nor will it ever even be significant towards those who are nothing but coldhearted.

It may be hard for arachniphobes to believe that spiders ever bring good luck, but this early 0th century good luck postcard proves they do.

Further evidence comes from The Mascot Book by Elizabeth Villiers, published in England in 1. According to Villiers, the spider was popular with the Romans, who had a favourite mascot in the shape of a precious stone upon which a spider was engraved. Also they were fond of carrying little spiders of gold or silver, or any of the fortunate metals, to bring good luck in anything to do with trade.

Spiders have always meant good luck to professional weavers and spinners, for obvious reasons, but corroboration of the spiders financial symbolism is provided by a bas relief on outside of the The Bohemian Club building in San Francisco. The club was founded in the 1th century as a place for local businessmen to set aside Dull Care and engage in theatrical and sexual Hi-Jinks, so the image -- of a spider and the words weaving spiders come not here -- warns members to leave their financial schemes outside the precincts.

Why is the spider supposed to bring good luck in money matters? I think it is because the spider in its web is believed to attract its prey; thus the spider amulet is believed to attract money to the bearer. In short, Europeans seem to have used spider amulets in the same way that African-Americans use a pair of magnetic lodestones to draw money or Mexicans use horseshoe amulets accompanied by pictures of San Martin Caballero as symbolic horseshoe magnets to attract money. (Notable styles of Mexican money-magnets include small horseshoe package amulets, El Secreto de la Virtuosa Herradura wall hangings, and the unusual Snow Globe Pyramid of Luck.)

Like many other beliefs centered in animal lore, the luckiness attached to the spider has diminished during this century, probably because urbanization has rendered our environs virtually free of species other than human beings. Still, some money-magic does yet adhere to the spider, even among the computer-using classes. For instance, from the United Kingdom, Shona McNeill writes

There is a relic of this belief in my family -- there is a species of tiny black spider, that we call the Money Spider. If one walks across your palm, it will bring good luck in money.

Villiers noted that in France during the 10s, the sight of a spider in the house is not fortunate in the forenoon, but if you see it in the afternoon, you may certainly expect a present, the value of the gift increasing according to the lateness of the hour.

In a similar vein, my mother, Liselotte Erlanger Glozer, recounts the following German verse about finding spiders in the house at different times of day, which she learned as a child in Bavaria, in the early 10s

Spinne am Morgen

bringt Kummer und Sorgen

Spinne am Nachmittag

bringt Freude am dritten Tag

Spinne am Abend

erquickend und labend

Her non-rhyming translation of this verse is

Spider in the morning

brings grief and sorrow

Spider in the afternoon

brings joy on the third day

Spider in the evening

refreshes and nourishes

Elizabeth Villiers wrote, The idea that to kill a spider will bring bad luck is common still, and most housewives, while destroying the web, will carefully lift the spider and put it out of doors. That killing a spider is followed by monetary loss is the belief in some parts of the country, thus particularizing the kind of ill luck to be expected. But to see a spider is fortunate so long as it is not hurt.

In the last century, it is well recognized that Australia in the post-war period has received an impressive diversity of immigrants from a multitude of nations. People from all over the globe have settled onto Australian shores bringing with them, their life experiences. Due to these facts, Australia is known to be a multicultural society; very diverse in ethnicity, culture, age, gender, race and class. Religion has been one important variety which immigrants have brought with them; however it has been very evident through my own findings, that religion is less widely part of research and informed discussion. As described by (Mosques and Muslim Settlement in Australia, pp.iii, 14) the role of religion in settlement, and the experiences of those professing a faith different from the majority of other members of Australian society, is relatively neglected in literature and immigration research.

shows that nearly 1percent of the Australian population indicates Islam as their religion. As part of my report, I have chosen to focus on religion, Islam in particular, and using local examples I will discuss how decision-makers work with communities in relation to religion, and provide examples where the values of different community groups living in the same area have come into conflict.

Whilst trying to gather relevant information on this topic of religion, and Islam in particular, it was very interesting to find that there was very little information or content relevant to this topic in the local councils policies or files. Although many of its planning permits regarding sensitive religious issues such as Muslims being able to access mosques at very early times during Ramadan are catered for, there is no real process in which such situations are dealt through.

When asked, if there were any objections to the proposal of a mosque in a residential area, there were no such evidence of any. The local town planner, , said the proposals for all types of places of worship all followed the same framework, and there were no specifics for different religions. However, as stated earlier, due to being a large Muslim community, the proposal for the mosque was pushed through. Although it is important for those involved with working with diverse communities to encourage Australians to express, share and value one another's cultural heritage, sometimes they may do more harm in doing so. One example of this is the Hume City Council mayor's decision to ban pork from being provided at public functions in an effort to ensure the area's Muslim community got more involved in council events. Although the intent of this decision was to be more inclusive it alienated the community even further.

The Equal Opportunity Commission also said is had fielded calls from angry residents who claimed the move was discriminatory. Chief executive of the Equal Opportunity Commission Diane Sisely also mentioned that, 'It is not the Muslims who are calling for a ban on particular foods, nor is it Muslims who create a fuss each Christmas about nativity plays and Christmas carols'. This, she explains is an example where decision-makers have done more harm than good.

Multiculturalism then, as explained by Gary (Minister for citizenship and Multicultural Affairs), '…is not about giving up one's culture or expecting others to do the same… Giving up to accommodate others creates resentment and the very divisions which Australian multiculturalism is about bridging.'

In order to achieve an equitable and fair society, the federal multicultural policies recognize that all people should be able to participate in decisions that affect them. (Commonwealth of Australia 15). However this participation process was not evident in the case study above. The public was not consulted in regards to the pork ban, and as stated by a local planner, it was basically the Mayor whispering to the council's CEO to order the pork ban.

With both of the case studies shown above, it can be seen that sometimes it is hard to have all differences accommodated for. Again, in doing so may cause more harm than good. Religion especially, is a very sensitive issue to bring up, as peoples' beliefs and levels in religion differ. As one of the community members of Hume states in the local newspaper, '… we have a secular government in Australia, and (that) religion belongs firmly in the private sphere, the churches or the home.' (Gayle Edwards, pp. The idea that religion is a private concept, is also put forward by Bouma, (pp.1, ……………………………………………) who states that for most of Australia's history, religion has been viewed as a private matter not subject to control by the state.

Reading through the replies in regards to prayers before council meetings, it seems evident that people feel the politicization of religion will only cause division among the community. One individual in particular wanted the prayers to be deleted all together as it was both unfair and dangerous to attempt to change a person's faith or culture. Even though the change in prayers was a way to include more of society, it made some feel the change was manipulative.

Although Mayor Burhan Yigit is Muslim himself, this case study is a prime example that it is wrong to generalize. Although an individual may feel part of certain social group, it is wrong to be able to decide or think on behalf of the rest of the community. It is not to say that the councilors at Hume, or the local policies always have a negative affect, but the examples in which I have provided show that outcomes are rarely positive when public meetings and consultations with the people affected are not provided.

Providing communities with places of worship can also be hard work for decision-makers.

To deal with these problems it is important to have programs of community education on religious pluralism in Australia which make clear the importance and role of religion in society, as well as the existence and contributions of a wide variety of different faiths, beliefs and practices. It would also be helpful for these programs to be in all schools as part of the curriculum. Although many of the places I have associated with, do cater for the needs of people with different religions, (especially with Muslims, and providing them with rooms for praying, etc.), it is important to increase awareness of what it means to be of a different religion living in Australia. There should also be an introduction to the needs of a Muslim (or any faith) worker and how these are being met, at a National level.

Stereotyping that people come here and don't learn the language etc etc. we can say that women aren't allowed to learn etc etc.

After analyzing the very minimum research available on religion and its effect on multiculturalism in Australia, it seems clear that the only possible way for social justice is to accept and respect each others religion and beliefs. As stated by Heiner Bielefeldt amd there seems to be two world views. One is of the 'western civilisation', which is based on Christian values, and the other the 'Islamic civilisation' which epitomizes Islamic values. Heiner, . Explains how many people follow these concepts, and begin to see social justice as either a 'Western' concept of justice, or 'Islamic' concept of justice; both concepts essentially opposed.

We need to realize that '…[R]espect for human dignity is the fundamental normative principle on which all possible orders of justice are based. In all the controversies over what social justice might mean, the basic requirement of respecting human responsibility is always presupposed.' (

Religion is a very hard concept to deal with, as not only does religion have an affect on your identity, but also your ideas, thoughts, opinions, actions, and your goals in life. We all have a different way to living life, however, some countries, including Australia to an extent, do not fully take into consideration the needs of people from diverse communities (religious diversity). As indicated by the booklet 'Understanding Planning', the guide asserts that planning in a modern society operates 'for the greatest good of the greatest number' (Department of Infrastructure 164). This notion is also proved to be evident in Sandercock and Kliger's, interviews with local planners in Melbourne. When asked on their thoughts of the 'one law for all' and 'majority rules' approach to justice, one Local Laws Officer replied, 'Local laws and regulations are framed for the majority of the community. If the minority can't fit, then bad luck' (pp.7, 17).

If professionals in Australia have the same views as the ones interviewed by Sandercock & Kliger, then we have a problem.
