Some of my first thoughts about Black River Falls, a small community of sixteen thousand, in Northern Wisconsin, are of the profound sense of freedom I had when I visited my grandfather's house. I was allowed to wonder the forest with my grandfather's dog, Stubby. My grandfather never worried about me wandering alone in the forest, because Stubby always knew the way home. I would give my grandfather that wide-eyed look to escape once again into the forest. "Off," he would say almost whispering and the adventure would begin. Stubby, a small brown multicolored border terrier would scamper down the sandy path leading into the forest. Stubby named for his short tail, was a very alert, active little dog capable of squeezing through narrow apertures and taking on animals twice his size. My grandparents initially settled in Black River to farm the land, which included several hundred acres of forest. When most people look at the forest, they only see the vast expanses of trees white and red pine; willows, oaks, and soft maple all tightly packed together, but the forest is so much more than that. It is a magical place, for a child to explore. The towering trees provide shelter along the well-worn path that leads deep into the forest. Filtered sunlight casts shadows through the twisted branches above, and makes the leaves glitter and dance in the wind. The ground is damp and moist, a perfect environment for the bounty of mushrooms waiting to be discovered. As a child I was always surprised that mushrooms came in such a kaleidoscope of colors, as well as sizes and shapes that excite the imagination. Each exploration in the forest produced something new a freshly fallen tree, a small stream, a whitetail deer grazing along the path, a pair of squirrels racing among the trees, or a great horned owl surveying the forest floor for his afternoon lunch. Stubby would occasionally wandering back, and then scurry away in search of some new smell. I find it amazing how a certain smell can transport me back into the forest of my childhood and that sense of freedom.

like Atticus can do it. He provides the necessary sanity, skill, and intelligence at almost

that stands out the most is when Bob Ewell spits in Atticus face. Almost anyone,

including myself would have punched the drunken animal in the face until he was

bloody. But Atticus was more humane, and had the self-control to walk away. As a

god teacher Atticus tried to move the community as a whole toward a better, more

respectful time.

This novel is a perfect example of bildungsroman. That is, a genre of a novel

about the building of a character. Scout, as the main character, is the character that is

being built. She is a dynamic character, one who, over the course of the events of the

novel experiences change or growth physically, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually

because of those events. She experiences changes all throughout the book, and some

can gradually be seen. In the beginning of the book Scout has severe trouble controlling

her temper. She beats up her cousin for calling her and Atticus names, and roughs up

Walter Cunningham when she got herself in trouble when she talked about him. As the

book progresses, she gets in less and less fights. By the last part of the book she can

control her temper almost as well as Atticus.

Another incident of her growth is concerning Boo. In the first part of the book

Boo was seen as an almost mythical creature. They played games about him, told crazy

stories, and was frightened of him. Even going up to his front steps was a dare that was

only to be done by Jem. As the book progresses Scout sees Boo more and more as a

person, Mr. Arthur Radley. During the fire she sees his more humane side when he

brings her a blanket to keepher warm. Also, she saw his nicer sice with the gifts in the

tree. He gave them whatseems to be his more valuable possesions, and items he made

that required skill. Then they see the love in him, when he saves them from Bobby Ewell,

and might have killed him. At that time, Scout finally meets Arthur, and all of a sudden

forgets the scary stories, games, and being scared. She realized Arthur is a nice person,

and just wants to be left alone.

Also, Scout gradually learns to accept people more. When she first meets

Miss Caroline she is angry at her for not knowing the ins and outs of Maycomb. Later

she realizes that Miss Caroline could not learn everything about Maycomb in and

started to accept her. In the beginning of the book she thought that Calpurnia only

picked on her, and not Jem. She started to realize that Calpurnia was being strict to

help her, not just to be mean. She understands Calpurnias methods and ways.

Scout is also the narrator, and is a naïve one at that. A naïve narrator is a

narrator that has a simple understanding of life. She doesnt always realize the bigger

picture, or total story. The Mrs. Duboise conflict is an example of this. Scout thinks

that the reason she has to read to Mrs. Duboise is that it is a punishment for Jems

behavior. She sits in the Duboise house for over a month thinking this. Then after

their supposed punishment was over and Mrs. Duboise was dead, the whole story

was found when Atticus explained Mrs. Duboises drug problem. Another example

of this naïve story telling is during Atticus trial. Scout realizes Atticus defense as a

good one, and thinks he has a really good chance. But she is not prepared for him

to lose, and when he does she loses it. She does not realize what caused Atticus to

lose, and cried about it. She did not understand the process of appeals, and I

am guessing neither did Tom Robinson. Atticus knew he was not going to win, as

the county jury were all racist, but Scout could not realize that.

Atticus was the main reason that Scout changed so much. He influenced her

enough, but not too much, as to dominate her life. He helped her control her temper,

but he did it kind enough, and not too kind. He had gained enough respect that just

by telling her to keep her cool she would. She would not fight to keep Atticus happy,

which is an honor not many parents can gain, respect. Not only did he tell her to keep

her temper under control, but he set a good example. During the trial he kept calm,

from beginning to end, from when Bob Ewell spit in his face, to when the decision was

read. He also showed Scout another thing at the trial, to be content with the best

possible. She showed this learned lesson at the meeting with her Aunt Alexandria. She

tried to be nice and wear a dress for her aunt, and could only do it to a certain point.

She knew that and acted like a lady as best she could.

Atticus also let Scout understand things herself. He let her figure things out

herself, like with Mrs. Duboise. Atticus knew what was happening, but let Jem and

Scout try to find out themselves. Same thing with Arthur Radley, he knew Arthur the

whole time, but let Jem and Scout find out themselves, when he saved thier lives.

Probably the most important lesson taught by Atticus was acceptence of all people.

In a time of hatred and racism, Atticus taught his children to accept all people, and

applied this to his life, by defending Tom Robinson.

Atticus role as a god teacher directly affects the growth of Scout, and uses

Analysis of Collected Data

Once the desired number of respondents has been collected, the data will be analyzed and tabulated by hand. How the person heard about Brittany Commons is of most interest to this particular research project. Also the needs of the respondent will be recorded because there are only a couple of apartment properties that offer a two bedroom with a den or three bedroom apartments and the research team is also interested in determining the needs of its clients.

Once the data has been tabulated it will be analyzed. Graphs and charts will be developed to better grasp which advertising mix would most greatly benefit Brittany Commons. The research team will further examine the number of people to occupy the apartment and how many bedrooms respondents wanted. This will enable to the team to determine if Brittany Commons should advertise about the availability of the apartments.

Section 1.01 Possible Sources of Error and the Steps taken to Reduce or Correct for Error

Due to the questions being so easy to answer, it is doubtful that a respondent will lie about how he found out about Brittany Commons. People typically respond easily to these questions due to the fact that the staff at the leasing office must do a background check, pull a credit report, and find out a resident¡¦s income. Respondents also know that any personal information is kept confidential so that the public will not know about their personal lives.

The other way that the error has been reduced is the fact that only one person will conduct the interviews with the respondents. Each leasing consultant has a different style of interacting with potential residents so only one leasing consultant will be used.

There may be researcher error when tabulating the results. This will be corrected by having more than one member of the group look over the data. The only other type of error would be interviewer error with having the interviewer write down the wrong answer to the question.

Results

The main goal of this research project was to identify which method of advertising is the most effective for Brittany Commons Apartments. The seven methods that the respondents used were; the internet, Apartment Finder¡¦s Guide, referrals from current residents, walk-ins, realtors, and newspaper advertisements. One hundred fifty potential residents were sampled and each respondent provided the interviewer with information about; the size of the apartment, the number of occup0ants, and how they had heard about Brittany Commons. The Apartment Finder¡¦s Guide proved to be the most effective with eighty-one (54%) of the respondents saying that they used this method to inquire about Brittany Commons. The internet proved to be the second most effective method with eighteen (1%) of the respondents using the computer to obtain information about Brittany Commons. Referrals from other residents proved to be the third most effective method of advertising with seventeen (11 1/%) respondents obtaining information from current residents. The next most effective method of advertising was no advertising at all; walk-ins composed 1 (8%) of the answers of how respondents heard about Brittany Commons Apartments. The yellow pages in the phone book and newspaper advertisements each had 10 respondents, who used these methods to obtain information about Brittany Commons. Finally realtors proved to be the least effective in regards to advertising for Brittany Commons, with only two respondents utilizing them to obtain information about Brittany Commons.

Other important statistics that were collected from this data were the average number of people to be occupying one apartment and the average number of bedroom applicants wanted. The average number of people to be occupying one apartment is .84 people. A majority of applicants, 7 of 150, requested to live in a two bedroom apartment. Only 0 applicants wanted a one bedroom. While 47 applicants wanted a three bedroom.

Discussion

When trying to determine which advertising method works best, the research team collected the data and performed different types of analysis as well as using different equations to try to find evidence to support our hypothesis.

When we analyzed the collected data, we found that the vast majority of respondents, 54 percent, used the Apartment Finder¡¦s Guide to find Brittany Commons. The next highest response to the question of how the respondent found Brittany Commons was the Internet. 1 percent of people chose to use the Internet to find an apartment at Brittany Commons. Respondents who found Brittany Commons through a friends referral were third in the ranking. 11.% of respondents answered the question of how they found Brittany Commons was through a friends referral. 8% of respondents were not influenced to come to Brittany Commons by any of the stated advertising and are thus counted as walk-ins. The yellow pages and the Classified Section in the newspaper both snagged 6.7% of the respondents each. 1.% or respondents found Brittany Commons through a realtor.

When formulating equations to support our hypothesis, the research team decided that it would be very useful to find out if we could determine the number of people that occupied each type of apartment. This would enable Brittany Commons to possibly have a more targeted advertising campaign. The research team then decided to put together a three null hypotheses stating that in a one bedroom apartment, only one person would be living it that apartment; in a two bedroom apartment, in which only two people would be living; and in a three bedroom apartment, in which only three people would be living. The research team decided to use these three null hypotheses for simplicities sake and to see if the team could rule out any of these three null hypotheses.

After putting all information into the three equations we came out with results for each hypothesis. In the first equation the Z value came out to be 1.1 which is less than the critical value of 1.6 at a confidence level of 5 percent. These results indicated that the research team could not reject the first null hypothesis.

In the second equation the Z value came out to be -.1 which was less than the critical value of 1.6 at a confidence level of 5 percent. These results indicated that the research team could not reject the second null hypothesis.

In the third equations the Z value came out to be -5.44 which was considerably less than the critical value of 1.6 at a confidence level of 5 percent. These results indicated that the research team could not reject the third null hypothesis.

These results ment that the research team could not reject any null hypotheses. These results mean that it is possible that one, two, and three residents respectively in the population at large occupy 50% of all the one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments.

Recommendation

There were a few places in our research that could have been more solid. One place, in which the research could have been better conducted, is if the staff or Brittany Commons could have been more open and forthcoming in providing the research team with information and assistance.

The questions that were asked of the respondents were not set by the researchers; but rather by Brittany Commons. It would have been more effective if the research team had been able to formulate its own questions. This would have allowed the research team to be more specific in trying to find the answers to the questions rather than having to wade through all the unimportant questions to get to the heart of the interview. Another reason it would have been beneficial for the research team to formulate its own questions is that it would allow for more flexibility. With increased flexibility, the research team could have added, dropped, or modified questions if the need arouse.

One other place in which there might be possible weakness is in the fact that all the research was done by a human. This opens the research to human error. This would be an uncontrollable error. The leasing consultant could have fudged answers, or hurried the respondent. This would be an error that the research team would have no control over.

When dealing with an established company, the research team should, in the future, sign a legally binding privacy agreement. This would have allowed the research team to conduct a more in depth study while at the same time respecting the privacy of the respondents.

Another area that could be improved in the future would be the number of team members with access to the data. This would help to eliminate some human error that may occur due to only a single team member being able to access the data.

Introduction

The Sundale Club is the largest of the athletic social clubs in the city. It is well established in the community and has a prestigious reputation. It has over 1,000 members and has always had a waiting list for new memberships.

Problems

Initial concerns began to arise when the once prestigious club began to experience a sudden decline in membership and interest in their facility. The once thriving athletic social club found it increasingly difficult to get members to participate in its social activities. There was also a noticeable decline in members renewing their memberships and an increase in the number of cancelled memberships. Oddly, the once energetic staff now seemed frustrated and unhappy with their jobs.

At the request of an anonymous employee, the corporate Human Resource department began an internal investigation. The purpose of the investigation was to determine the root of these problems. A team of HR managers went to this particular Sundale Club location and spoke with several employees and members.

concern. All the nations of the world must work together if we are to successfully address

is not entirely the politicians' fault. Most of the world is uneducated about the realities and

dangers of global warming, and therefore dismiss it as harmless.

The economic policy of Kyoto, the only real attempt to regulate pollution output,

was flawed. The emissions cap for countries was estimated to be 8 to 14 times more

expensive than an optimal trading policy, and the cost emission permits would have

quickly skyrocketed.

Any future policy should be designed with the successes and failures of past efforts

in mind. Only then will a truly coherent global policy emerge.

There are many actions we could take that are cheap and significantly decrease the

output of global warming gasses. Often times these initiatives require a high initial

investment but yield far greater returns in the long run. Examples are numerous and easy

to find. They range from energy saving light bulbs, to improved building insulation, to

tapping the natural gas released from oil deposits. The problem has always been a lack of

cash, and a shortsighted attitude about global warming.

Establishing a United Nations fund, under the control of an international

committee, to reduce the effect of global warming would help unify many initiatives,

providing more efficient solutions. It would require a large effort to get people of the

world to swallow their national pride and combine their efforts, but the benefits are well

worth the costs.

An international tax on carbon emissions, payable by the emitting corporation or

government would go a long way toward paying for cleaner solutions. Enacting a tax of

even two or three dollars per ton on carbon dioxide, and equivalent gas emissions, released

by the industrial nations would provide about seven billion dollars; a large portion of the

capital needed for the initiatives that will reduce global warming, as well as providing an

incentive for polluters to reduce or halt pollution if it is cheaper than paying the tax. This

tax is especially useful, since it provides a single method of stopping polluters, instead of

the individually tailored and excessively complicated procedures, such as factory emission

limits, or power plant emission limits that are full of loopholes corporations can abuse. By

randomly sending UN inspectors to factories, and imposing harsh fines on those that lied

about their pollution outputs would virtually eliminate non-compliance.

The fund should pay for efforts designed to reduce greenhouse gasses and deal with

the future effects of global warming. We must take care that the giving of money not

become an end in and of itself. Concrete goals should be set for each project, and if they

are not met then the recipients should be held accountable by the UN. A prize for the

publicity to those who deserve it, from one of the most prestigious organizations in

existence.

Industry is one of the biggest causes of the increase in global warming gas. Many

factories could be made to run more efficiently, improving their output and reducing the

amount of CO produced. Improvements have not been made due to monetary shortage.

Many of these factories are in third world countries, which are forced to suffer from the

smog and dirt. Paying for improving the factories would increase their productivity,

improve the living condition of people around the factories, and reduce the amount of CO

gas released. This would be useful even in the absence of global warming.

Energy generation is not far behind industry when it comes to CO emissions. Coal,

oil, and natural gas all release CO in large quantities. The UN could pay for construction

of solar, wind, geothermal, and hydroelectric power sources wherever they are needed.

The fund should provide money for research designed to improve the efficiency of

nonpolluting power sources.

Vehicles produce roughly 0% of the worlds CO emissions. If the UN enacted

global gas mileage standards similar to California's, or most of Europe's the total

worldwide CO emissions would be reduced significantly. This cost is nominal to most

countries in which the automobile is heavily utilized, and most developing countries do not

use cars excessively. A UN treaty could ban the import or export of any vehicle violating

those standards, as well as prohibit them being built in participating nations.

Establishing building codes and international standards for household appliances

would reduce energy costs significantly, thereby reducing global warming. Many things

that use electricity are built cheaply and inefficiently. More expensive products that are

more efficient would actually have a long term benefit to the consumer, as well as reducing

electricity usage, and thereby reducing CO output.

As the Montreal Protocol of 187 shows, it is possible for the world to stop the

production of harmful greenhouse gasses that are easily replaced, such as

would require a herculean effort by the governments of the world, far in excess of what the

Kyoto treaty demands. This rise in temperature is definitely enough to cause global

warming effects, effects that developing nations are ill equipped to prepare for. The

weather will get more extreme, with greater numbers of droughts and hurricanes. This

effect can already be seen, with three of the four most expensive hurricanes being in the

past decade, various floods swamping India and the Midwestern United States, and

drought in parts of the globe unused to suck conditions. We must take steps to deal with

these problems.

The UN should design and build irrigation equipment for all major food production

centers to help them deal with any droughts, a likely result of global warming. Building

runoff channels for the rain is a good idea also, since it is probable that global warming
