The Grendel Project

The story of Grendel opens in the season of Spring. The first communication the reader sees of Grendel is when he tries to scare away the Ram. Grendel fails in doing so because it is mating season for Ram and he will not be scared away. Grendel is a very curious creature. He wants to be understood by society. He has no direction from a mother or father figure. His has little to no family life.

Grendel lives with his mother in a cave. He and his mother do not speak to each other. Grendel's mother eats and sleeps all day everyday. She is nonsocial and has no communication towards anyone. Grendel discovers that the men have been at war with each other ever since he's been spying on them.

The Shaper is introduced as a character who plays a harp and sings tunes of what is going on in the story. The Shaper is an intelligent character. His sentence structure and story development skills intrigues Grendel to listen to his stories. Grendel strongly believes in hope that "man" will change their negative point of view of him. What is Capital punishment? Capital punishment is the death penalty. It is used today, just as it was used in ancient times to punish criminals convicted of a variety of offenses. Even the bible advocates death for murder and other crimes like kidnapping and witchcraft. When the death penalty is debated, it has a tendency to provide plenty of yelling and screaming from both sides of the argument. One side may say deterrence, while the other side may say, but you may execute an innocent man. Today, one of the most debated issues in the Criminal Justice System is the issue of capital punishment or the death penalty.

Capital punishment was legal until 17, when the Supreme Court declared it unconstitutional in Furman v. Georgia stating that it violated the Eight and Fourteen Amendments citing cruel and unusual punishment. However, in 176, the Supreme Court reversed itself with Gregg v. Georgia and reinstated the death penalty but not all states have the death penalty. Twelve states currently do not have the death penalty Alaska, District of Colombia, Hawaii, Iowa, Main, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wisconsin (Deathpenalty info).

The death penalty has been around since the beginning of time. Throughout history people have been put to death for various forms of crimes. Executions in the early United States were made public affairs and the bodies were often put on display for days. Although the death penalty was largely accepted throughout the early United States, everyone did not approve. Founders of the United States like Thomas Jefferson had serious doubts about the death penalty and hoped that it was severely limited in the new nation. Others like Dr. Benjamin Rush, the Surgeon General of the American Forces during the Revolutionary War, called for it to be abolished altogether (Kronenwetter 10-1). Murder is the only crime considered a capital offense in most states. The Supreme Court requires that two conditions must be met for a specific murder to warrant the death penalty. The murder must be first-degree and one or more aggravating circumstances must be present. Aggravating circumstances are defined in the applicable death penalty statute.

Igor Primoratz said, ¡§punishment is morally justified insofar as it is meted out as retribution for the offense committed¡¨(Retributive justice).

Both sides of the issue could easily use social stratification to argue their point. ¡§The vast majority of people executed since 177, when employed, worked in menial or low-paying jobs at the time they committed their capital crimes¡¨ (Culver). Throughout my research, I have yet to find a child from a predominately wealthy family on death row. Proponents for capital punishment argue that this should not make a difference. The cost for a capital defense can add up quickly DNA tests, experts, background and psychiatric investigations. Many lower class people have to depend upon public defenders that are not as qualified as some high profile attorneys. It is not possible for an individual making nine dollars per hour, to hire an attorney charging two hundred dollars per hour. All of these factors play in the hands of the conflict theorist.

Conflict theorists believe that power is a tool that should be wielded by one group to implement their will upon others. Is this not what the death penalty is all about? Is this not the same as the upper echelon of society tipping the scales of justice? The proponents of the death penalty would definitely fall into this category. Fortunately for the poor, the laws of gravity say that what goes up must come down. And slowly, society is starting to take a harder look at the way capital punishment is implemented. The poor and impoverished are the ones that are most susceptible to the concept of social power. Yet, this is the very heart and soul of the conflict theorist.

We as Americans, are conspicuously indecisive about the most decisive punishment in our criminal justice system. ¡§Nearly three-quarters of the population support the death penalty, yet nearly half the country is willing to consider eliminating it¡¨ (Mathew Pearl). Scholars, activists, and lawyers have built up several effective arguments against capital punishment that it violates the Constitutions prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment, that it is distributed capriciously along racial and class lines, and that an innocent person could be put to death. Both sides of the argument use Biblical scriptures to bolster their beliefs.

Race and socio-economic class have a lot to do with determining who receives the death penalty. It is becoming more and more obvious that if you have enough wealth, you can avoid the death penalty. This only goes to show that capital punishment is not being applied equally among the masses. The life of a rich man is worth no more than the life of a poor man.

A major factor that deserves to be examined is poverty. A defendant¡¦s poverty and lack of firm social roots in the community has become a reoccurring theme in capital cases. One concept that could be used to explain how poverty contributes to violent crimes is called ¡§the truly disadvantaged¡¨. This class of people consists of person¡¦s who are hopelessly trapped in a cycle of joblessness, deviance, crime, welfare dependency, and unstable family life. (Curry,Jiobu,Schwrian 87). It is extremely difficult to break this vicious cycle. Through cumulation, the majority keeps the minority in an inferior status. Social inequality has been a constant in our society since the beginning. The minority groups lack the resources that are available to the upper class of America.

Should the color of a man¡¦s skin determine whether or not he lives or dies? Unfortunately skin color has been a deciding factor in the use of capital punishment. Race had become the major player in the debate of the abolishing or keeping the death penalty. Blacks and minorities have been stereotyped to the point that they can not get a fair trial in a society were they are a minority.

Since 176, 5% of the people executed were black. At the same time blacks made up 1.8% of the population. Over 80% of completed capital cases involved white victims, even though, nationally only 50% of murder victims are white. A white man convicted of murdering a black is less likely to get the death penalty than a black man convicted of murdering a white man. Of the interracial murders committed 178 blacks were executed for killing a white person. Only 1 whites were executed for killing a black person. Everything seems to point to the fact that the death penalty has not been applied equally to all members of society. The minority groups have paid a higher price. The lower a person¡¦s socioeconomic status is, the more likely he or she will receive the death penalty. A lack of education among the poor continues to be a factor in violent crimes. Once a race has been stereotyped it is subject to unfair treatment at all levels of the justice system. It is a foregone conclusion that our justice system is not perfect.

Both sides of the argument use Biblical scriptures to bolster their beliefs. The classic moral arguments in favor of the death penalty have been scriptural. For example, the statement from the Bible that ¡§whosoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed¡¨(Genesis 6) has usually been interpreted as an argument for putting a murderer to death. There are numerous other crimes for which the Bible prescribes death as punishment. Other crimes in the bible that call for death as punishment are;¡¨ adultery (Leviticus 010; Deuteronomy -4), incest (Leviticus 011-1), homosexuality (Leviticus 01), and prostitution¡¨ (Leviticus 11; Deuteronomy 1- 1). Proponents are quick to avoid these biblical passages.

There are a number of scriptures that repute these passages, depending on each person¡¦s belief. One such scripture is in the Ten Commandments, saying thou shall not kill. The scriptures can be used and interpreted to suit the individual and their moral aspect of life. The death penalty is still the taking of a human life and people will continue to use the scriptures to appease oneself for their own belief or action.

The United States has achieved the status of a civilized nation. Is it proper for a civilized society to accept the legalized murder that is committed when the death penalty is carried out? Other than vengeance for a few people, the death penalty has no positive effect on society. Still, the American public overwhelmingly supports the death penalty. Whether it is a monetary or moral cost, the cost of carrying out the death sentence is an enormous burden on the taxpayers. There has been no concrete evidence that proves that the death penalty is a deterrent to crime. All of the facts show that the death penalty is not a equal opportunity killer. Until all of the social problems associated with capital punishment are resolved, I feel that the death penalty should be stopped.

THE JOHARI WINDOW

The Johari Window is a graphical model with four quadrants designed to increase effective relationships within a group in terms of awareness. It is simple to visualize what each quadrant represents and is seen by many people as the communication window. An individual is able to view what is known to self and others and what is not known to self and others, by observing how one presents and receives information through the panes. The Johari Window enables an individual to describe, evaluate, and predict the aspects of interpersonal communication in their own life by exploring what is seen in each window. The first pane in the Johari Window is known as the Arena and represents the degree of self-disclosure in relationships. It contains personal information that is known to others and ourselves. Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 188 in Portsmouth England. His first few years he was ill, but to make him feel better his parents and his nurse told him many exciting stories. When Dickens was twelve, his father was imprisoned for debts that he could not pay; at this time his family was living in London. By 1860 Dickens had found himself a mistress by the name of Ellen Teran, an actress he had met when he started an interest in theater. George IV died in 180 and was replaced by King William, who was in turn succeeded by Queen Victoria in 187 (Classic). This was also right at the time of the Industrial Revolution began. It was a period of significant technological development. The invention of steam power changed transportation, and using steam power in steamboats and railroads permanently changed London's landscape. Steamboats began running on the Thames River in 1815, and passenger railroads spread all over England in the late 180's and early 1840's (Classic). These inventions were present in Great Expectations, when Pip is in London. It was the 180's at this time in the book. Steamships were mentioned, but Pip had left London before the railroads cam through.

The 180's had been not only a period of growing industrialization, but also a period of political and social agitation (Classic). The first Reform Bill, in 18, extended suffrage, initiating progressive social measures; and Queen Victoria was crowned in 187 (Pink). Pip returns to England in 1840, to find a new England, an England that had been thoroughly industrialized, socially progressive, and Victorian.

Ginsberg's individuality was further reinforced by his obstinate poetry, which was so strong and straightforward that his talent could not be denied. His refusal to be embarrassed or to deny himself was yet another characterization of his individuality.

Individuality is what ultimately characterizes these two American literature individuals whose work both redefine and worship the America they write about. A major difference between Whitman and Ginsberg is that Whitmans use of language is pretty obvious while Ginsbergs use of simple words as Geoffrey suggests, sometimes develops complex thoughts and meanings, which are easily misunderstood(Geoffrey, 177). Although we can still see the influence of Whitman in Ginsberg's "America", Ginsberg is much less optimistic and positive than Whitman himself. He actually sees the irony in American life and addresses it quite frankly. Ginsberg utilizes typical statements and phrases of the time to twist them in a way to show the irony and self-contradictions that underly almost anything. For example, in the section from "America" quoted earlier, rather than putting their shoulder to the wheel, Ginsbergs addition of queer, (meaning homosexual) makes the saying take on a different meaning (Geoffrey, 177). Whitman's poetry, on the other hand, although very straightforward is also susceptible to different interpretations. For example, Whitman's exploration of the self in his poetry and his use of the word I can easily imply certain egotistical qualities on his behalf. Or the more popular interpretation given by Miller, is that he was referring to a universal self that connects all people to each other and to nature(Miller, 145).

An additional suggestion of the individualism amidst these two seemingly analogous poets is that Howl seems to be the antithesis to Walt Whitmans Song of Myself. The poems are discussed in relationship to their depiction of individuality and freedom. Both poets portray their subjects in different ways, while still maintaining a few similarities. Both see these issues as illustrating the connected nature of humanity, whether spiritually or not. One speaks of hopelessness and the other of beauty and God. His connection with the people he speaks of is not the result of "insight or divine communication"(Atlas, 14) as in Whitman, but instead a clear declaration of utter hopelessness

There are no broken hearts because there are no expectations of connection, which is absolutely contradictory to everything Whitman writes about. Whitman is delighted to learn new things every day, but Ginsbergs subjects demand instantaneous lobotomy. The final and most obvious example of Ginsbergs divergence from Whitman is in the title; where Whitman sings, Ginsberg howls.

Ginsberg's mother was a Communist and extremely paranoid, often trusting her son while scared of her family and the rest of society. Allen Ginsberg became the signature of the hippie subculture in addition to that of the 'Beatniks' (Widmer,166). These two authors suggest that any individual in American literature must basically be an overachiever ready for anything in order to be achieve true individual status. It even appears that Ginsberg tries to go against everything Whitman would have done in his time only to avoid the likely comparison of his work to Whitman's. Essentially these two authors strive for the approval of their audience on this delicate subject matter. Whitman's smooth indirect approach definitely worked for him because I still have not yet come across one negative comment about Whitman's ideas on Americanism. In fact I have only noticed how so many people tend to follow in his footsteps, such as Ginsberg. Now Ginsberg on the other hand, has been scolded over and over again about his narrow mindedness on certain issues. Because Ginsberg is so fearless in his work, he is able to get his point across fast without worrying about his audience's approval. Many people do not approve of this method because they might feel that they are more deserving of what individualism and Americanism truly are.

The individual expectations of each of the authors are based on their personal experience, recognition of new ideas, acknowledgement of their own beliefs, and how each saw his solution to the complexity of his personal existence. As time goes on, this is a nation in which it has become increasingly difficult to find a suitable "ethnic identity"(Atlas, 1). In reality, both of these authors go to the extremes if the intention of their work was to adequately represent the concept of the individual in American literature as reality. Whitman is extremely too modest in his kind representation of the American individual and America itself. While Ginsberg's work on the other hand, does a better job at connecting his concept of the individual in his work to the reality, perhaps he does so a little too much. However, if they were to even attempt to depict true reality, or true individuals in their work, it would probably be unexciting, and definitely not as fulfilling as the concept actually is. The truth is that the idea of individuality is so omnipotent, but in reality an individual person is just thatany individual person. Although, as Americans we tend to go for the 'juicier' of the two, the one that is more flattering to our egos. So we have a tendency to digress on the concept rather than the plain reality.
