Essay Question Explain why people wanted to join "The Wave" and how word of mouth spread. Use examples from the text.

'The Wave" was an intriguing notion that developed within the schools society that almost progressed into a cult. Students felt obligated to join this movement in many forms, democracy, power, equality or merely the opportunity to be accepted. They were also enticed by the concept of increased social stasis in the group, whilst growing self-discipline. Once in this movement they felt empowered amongst the school. Their self-esteem grew; their contribution became more known and acknowledged. The propaganda device was alleged to be the main key of The Wave organization through, the schools newspaper, salute and motto; this eventuated in rumour, word of mouth and mass rallies. The idea progressed heavily through the process of threat-persuasion. The Waves member's enthusiasm grew immensely drawing the students to believe The Wave could work.

The process of bullying was a series of attempts aimed at cajoling people to join The Wave. The procedure of threat-persuasion happens in front of our eyes everyday where people are confronted with the same interrogation, once refused they begin the process of persuasion to enter the movement, examples of this is shown when Laurie receives a letter about a person who went through the process when resisting to join

"The senior starting telling us how great The Wave was. He said that the more kids who joined, the better it would get. He said almost all the seniors at school had joined and most of the juniors too." (THE WAVE, PG 64 & 65)Write my Essay on The Wave cheap

This was a simple tactic used at propelling one side of the story the positives and majority of people joining The Wave. This approach is used in everyday life, making people feel compelled to enlist so there not left out. The next step is the emotional pressure they place on the people, example is made known when

"I told him they were still my friends even if I didn't join. He kept asking me why I didn't want to join. I just told him I didn't feel like it. Then he got mad. He said pretty soon people in The Wave wouldn't want to be friends with people who weren't in it. He even said I'd lose all my friends if I didn't join." (THE WAVE, PG. 65)

This emotional pressure makes people feel dreadful for simply not doing something they didn't want to do. The pressure gets even worse when they imply verbal threats, for example

"I saw that senior from Mr. Ross's class in the hall and he asked if I had joined yet. I told him I didn't intend to. He said if I didn't join soon it would be too late." (THE WAVE. Pg, 65).

This threat leaves people feeling scared, it is when most people think twice and consider going against their will to avoid conflict. The final step is when they become aggressive and eventuate into violence. Example of this is when

"Almost out of control, he screamed 'shut up!' and threw her down on the grass. Her books went flying as she fell roughly to the ground." (THE WAVE. Pg, 8)

This is the final step in which they have been driven to do something, and when someone stands in their way they will do anything to stop them. They are under a trance to accomplish one goal, and will result in violence without even knowing there doing it. This is supported through the authority of power you experience whilst in the movement.

In the movement power was a major issue towards the involvement of members. Power is defined as having the ability to do something in a particular way or the skill to direct or influence the behavior of others. Many people experience power in real life through taking control of people or situations it makes them feel important and wanted. The mechanism of power grew as the movement continued; this is displayed when the leader, Mr. Ross realized his power within The Wave

"The students made him more of a leader than he had ever wished to be. But it was also true that he had not resisted. In fact, he had to admit that before the experiment had gone bad, he had enjoyed those fleeting moments of power. A crowed room full of students obeying his commands, The Wave symbol he'd created posted all over the school, even a bodyguard. He had read that power could be seductive, and now he had experienced it." (THE WAVE. Pg, 1)

Power contributes a lot towards our choices; this is clearly explained above, where someone can feel so empowered that the effects of situations can get away with them, as they lose control of the situation. Thus they cancel out the excess of the circumstance as they are so tied up in the power they receive from the people. The leaders of The Wave would accept new members, as it would demonstrate to existing members and others the power and influence they possess.

People felt their self-esteem rise once they were accepted into The Wave. Acceptance is an important issue that occurs regularly in schools around the world. It is heavily but upon by the so called 'losers' of the school, where they are outsiders who are considered different by the other students, so when an opportunity comes forth to be accepted for who they are they grab it. For the first time they feel protected and wanted. This matter occurs with the school loner, Robert

"There were two girls from Mr. Ross's class sitting at the table Robert choose. As Robert set his tray down, they both stood up and took their trays away to another table. Robert pretended he hadn't noticed."(THE WAVE. Pg, 18)

This incident happens before Robert is accepted, Robert shows no emotion when the girls leave, but in fact he really needs to be accepted and is hurting inside once they leave. Here's an example of what happens occurs when Robert is part of The Wave

"At lunch that day all The Wave members who were in the cafeteria set at a single long table. Brian, Brad, Amy, Laurie and David were there. At first Robert Billings seemed tentative about joining them, but when David saw him he insisted he sit at the table, telling him they were all part of The Wave now."(THE WAVE. Pg, 51)

This shows how joining and being accepted by a movement can change people's perspective on other people they didn't acknowledge before. Peer pressure is contributed towards people being accepted. A good example would be whereby a group of students putting undue pressure on another student to do something that he/she would not normally do, however they would go through with it to be accepted. In this situation the new student would believe to have parity amongst the group.

Equality within The Wave was an important ingredient towards the success of the group. Each member would receive equality. They all felt that they would be listened to without fear of criticism, whereas today you can have a discussion with someone and your thoughts on the subject may be rejected. An extract from the text by a member tells us of how he believes equality exists among the group

"It's like there's no in crowd anymore……… That's what's so great about The Wave. You don't have to worry about how popular you are. We're all equal. We're all part of the same community." (THE WAVE. Pg, 51 & 5)

The above quote clearly explains that within The Wave there's no popularity contest and everyone is treated the same. This is why The Wave became so successful because everyone who joined was treated with the same respect as existing members. This emotion of feeling part of a group is what is found in some cults.

A cult is a form of movement which attracts people that are weak-minded and require special needs including, acceptance therefore they can be easily influenced. A cult is normally started where one person or a group of people that invite gullible persons by giving them a sense of security and self worth, but only for there own personal gain. An example of a change of person is shown when a students personality completely changes

"You know they've been having problems with him for years. Elaine has talked to me frequently about it. She is very worried."(THE WAVE. Pg, 58)

"Only that I met Elaine Billings at the supermarket today, and she told me Robert is a completely new person." (THE WAVE. Pg, 58)

This example explains how by joining a cult, and feeling a sense of significance can totally change a person's personality and prospect towards life. The cult gives you guidance and an aim in life, but once The Wave is exterminated your point in life gets dropped. This awareness of well being expanded all over the school.

Visual contact is the ability to see something; this was a release that helped expose The Wave to the schools community. Majority of people in the world believe and take note of the actions they see. Hearing the motto of The Wave and observing the salute everyday by many people, gave the impression of belief of this movement. As people starting believing in the movement they wanted everybody to experience this type of cult so they continued with the salute and motto

"Strength Through Discipline, Strength Through Community, Strength Through Action." (THE WAVE. Pg, 51)

These strong words repeated over help people trust the strength of the movement. This is not the only component The Wave used to exploit itself another is the newspaper.

The newspaper or anything written about real issues in the world is thought of as the truth. Many people believe that what's written done and published is fact and by reading a newspaper, one single issue, can change a persons perspective on something as they believe what they're reading, this is shown in the book when

"The issue of The Wave had been so successful that it was almost impossible to find and extra copy anywhere. Not only that, but the teachers and administrators and even some of the students had stopped them all day and thanking them for revealing 'the other side' of The Wave." (THE WAVE. Pg, 85&86)

This tells us of how one newspaper article can change peoples minds about something they truly believed in and how word of this got spread so quickly, through the newspaper and word of mouth.

Word of mouth or rumour is a very strong and quick way of revealing a story or happening. Many people believe what they hear, because they hear it from a person they rely on to expose the truth. Word of mouth can travel very fast especially within a school community, where one person will be telling another a story and before the end of the day it would have gotten back to the source. This is why The Wave became so popular because it became known within a day of starting it. Examples of this are when

"What had begun as a simple history experiment had become a fad that was spreading outside his classroom. As a result a result, some unexpected things had started to occur. For one, the size of his daily history class beginning to expand." (THE WAVE. Pg, 5)

"To add to the interesting developments in his experiment was a report he'd heard that David Collins and his friends Eric and Brian had successfully infused The Wave into the school's football team." (THE WAVE. Pg, 54.)

Rumour is what has eventuated in the above text, it tells us of how people have spread the word of The Wave making people want to listen in and learn more. So by telling the whole football team and applying The Wave matter was thought to help the football team to succeed. Word of mouth assisted in the dispersal of The Wave development.

People join cults or groups for there own fulfillment. The many reasons why people joined The Wave were because they offered a number of desires for people to satisfy their needs and wants, these included; power, equality and acceptance. The Wave was influenced by a number of reasons that made it successful through word of mouth, newspaper, the salute and motto. The process of threat-persuasion was an immense impact on why people entered The Wave.

Beowulf and Gawain have more differences then similarities. Some of their similarities consist of being heroes and overcoming evil. Although they are both heroes of the medieval times, their heroism differs in many ways. For example, both Beowulf and Gawain prove to be brave, but Beowulf is the braver of the two. Throughout the story Gawain shows that he has more humanlike qualities then Beowulf and that he has love for his life and living.

Beowulf is a warrior who fights on his own with his bare hands. He kills Grendel, a vicious bloodthirsty monster, like it was nothing. On the other hand, Gawain shows his bravery and humility by telling King Arthur that he is not the strongest nor the smartest knight, so his life is less important and won't be such a great lost if he was killed. Therefore, he puts his life in danger when he accepts the challenge of the Green Knight. Gawains human qualities are shown when he is subjected to temptation and accepts the green girdle for protection. As part of the deal Gawain is supposed to give the Green Knight whatever he receives, but doesn't give him the green girdle. If Beowulf had been in that position he would have given up the green girdle because he did not need weapons or protection. The way Gawain and Beowulf differ is when the ax is swung at Gawain. When this is done Gawain flinches, which shows his human instinct. If in a similar situation I think that Beowulf would not have moved and would have let the ax become his destiny.

All in all, Beowulf and Gawain have very few similarities and a plethora of differences. Beowulf is a strong warrior that needs no weapons to help him, just his own strength. His qualities are very far from humanlike because the only time he experiences defeat is when he is old and dies. On the contrary, throughout the story Gawain experiences problems and defeat. He also expresses his human instinct by flinching. Both characters prove to be brave in many ways, just each one has different heroic qualities.

Meals are important cultural events. They are a time, not only for ingesting essential nutrients, but for conversation, companionship, and sharing. Atmosphere is important to this process. Our new and expensive school, has a much nicer cafeteria than was afforded on Winn Street. Nevertheless, the lack of freedom at Marietta High School regarding the cultural event of the midday meal is not acceptable. The current school policy is that no student may leave the campus during his or her lunch period. This policy should be changed. High school seniors who have met certain specific requirements designed to measure a level of responsibility, should be allowed to leave the school for lunch.

Most of the senior population have dined in the same type of environment since elementary school . They have experienced much of the same food and been exposed to many of the same people. The meals and environments offered at public secondary schools, in general, do not encourage the interaction that results in important cultural events. The lines are long and the food is dull. It is different in institutions of higher learning. There is a clear difference between how college and high school students eat. The college student has much greater choice as to what, when, and how to take his or her meals, while the high school student's freedom in these areas is much more restricted. A college student has many more choices as to quantity and quality of his or her meals. For example, many colleges offer a broad cafeteria selection for all meals and also allow students to take meals off campus at their discretion. The University of the South, as an example, is a small liberal arts college northwest of Chattanooga, Tennessee, which offers these kinds of choices. In high school, teachers are always trying to prepare their students for college. A good way to get used to college is to experience a college-like environment. Qualified responsible seniors should be able to experience situations and environments similar to what they will be experiencing in college. A good place to start is with lunch.

A good time to start is now, since the relocation of Marietta High School has opened up many new lunch possibilities. While the "no leaving campus for lunch" rule made some sense when we were located on Winn Street, the main reason for that rule disappeared with our move to Whitlock Avenue. At the old high school there were no nearby eating areas, and nobody really had enough time to leave the campus and return before class. The new location of the high school is perfect for off campus lunch. There are a variety of different places to eat, all within a very short drive, or even walking distance, from school. The close proximity of places to eat affords sufficient time to travel, dine and return. We should take advantage of our new location to do that.

By the time a student reaches his or her senior high school year, he or she should have matured and begun to take on the role of a functioning member of society. The ability to leave the school campus should not be taken lightly by any senior at Marietta High School. This ability should be considered a privilege, not an option. For a student to be given the privilege of leaving the campus for lunch, he or she should have earned at least a .0 GPA. The student should also have minimum disciplinary problems. Finally, an application form and parental permission should be required. This would create a school record of those students given these privileges, insure that parents have agreed to the arrangement, limit the school's liability, and give the school a way to monitor the student's continued eligibility for the privilege. Order custom research paper on Increased Lunch Privileges For High School Seniors

One argument against students leaving the school grounds for lunch is that there might be an accident for which the school would be held accountable. However, many students, mostly upper classmen, already drive back and forth from their home to school every day. Many students also come from and return to the campus at various times during the day because of their enrollment in DCT and Executive Internship programs. If the school is concerned with students getting into wrecks, it could provide some kind of driver release form that addresses that concern with the parents or legal guardians. If the parents or guardians approves of the release of their child then the student should be allowed to leave the campus. This same procedure is used when a student wishes to leave campus for a doctor's appointment. The parent is required to write a note to the attendance office allowing the student to leave the campus. What is being proposed in regard to school lunches would place greater responsibility on the student. This is because the parent would simply give blanket permission to leave the campus for lunch. The decision as to the appropriateness for each off campus meal would be left up to the student.

Another concern is how those seniors selected for the off campus lunch privilege could be distinguished from the rest of the student population. The best solution for that problem is to provide a sticker which can be stuck to the student's photo ID, one that identifies that a student is qualified for special lunch privileges. By doing this, no one else could use another's pass. This way the student can just flash his or her card and leave for lunch.

Under these special circumstances, increasing the lunch privileges for qualified seniors would help remove some of the monotony of public school eating and help the student become more adjusted to future college life. The student would develop more responsibility by making choices as to the quantity and quality of his or her meals, as well as the quality of the environment in which the meal is eaten. He or she would also gain from the need imposed by off campus dining to budget time and the means of getting to and from the lunch destination. This policy would also provide another incentive for good grades and good behavior.

The word circadian comes from the Latin root circania meaning circle. For modern purposes, the word circadian refers to anything that occurs in 4 cycles or periods. Rest and activity, taking in of fluid, formation of urine, body temperature, cardiac output, oxygen consumption, cell division, and the secreting activity of endocrine glands all participate in 4 hour cycles in many organisms, and are referred to as circadian rhythms. One of the most well understood circadian rhythms is the sleep circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm, commonly known as the biological clock, is thought to have three components, including the genetic machinery that allows the clock to regulate the expression of specific genes, the timekeeping machinery of the clock, and receptors that collect input from the outside world to set the clock.

Melatonin, the primary product of the pineal gland, has been known to regulate sleep cycles during the night for some time now. Just recently, scientists have discovered melatonins daytime counterpart SAM. SAM, a derivative of the amino acid methionine, combines with serotonin to make melatonin. SAM is manufactured to relatively high concentrations during the day, and burned away to low concentrations in the night. Serotonin also goes through a slight concentration drop in the night due to its role in melatonin formation, but, because it is needed in many other essential parts of the brain, its concentration does not vary as much as melatonin and SAM.

Alertness varies through out the day in relation to the three circadian phase regulatory molecules. Serotonin and SAM both start off in relatively high concentrations in the height of the day, while melatonin is almost no where to be found. As the sun begins to set, the pineal gland recognizes that there is less and less light. Norepinephrine begins to bind to รข-receptors in the pineal gland, and the pineal gland used the day time store of SAM and serotonin to manufacture melatonin. Once the concentration of SAM is to low to make any more melatonin, melatonin levels start to drop off, and SAM is free to rebuild. When the pineal gland senses the coming of light, SAM is produced again starting a new daily cycle.

As of May, 000, nine genes had been found that regulate circadian rhythms in mammals. Eight of the genes were found to be transcription factors, and the ninth gene encoded a kinase enzyme. Researchers discovered that a single amino acid mutation in the kinase, casein kinase I epsilon (CKI), rendered it slower to phosphoralate and turn on a group of proteins encoded by the gene located at the Tao locus named period. When this gene was inserted into hamsters, their circadian rhythms were shortened from 4 to 0 hours, demonstrating that timekeeping proteins do exist, and they regulate a period gene located on the Tao locus that helps keep the biological clock. Another study, done by Rosbash and Hall, discovered the that cryptochromes found in almost all organisms, including human retina, absorb blue light and send signals that reset many kinds of circadian rhythms to the day night cycle. This was significant, because it was thought that the same rods and cones that were used for sight somehow transmitted signals to the brain that told when night was coming. Rosbash and Hall proved that there was a totally separate system of nerves and receptors dedicated to the biological clock that were pretty much universal through out the animal kingdom, and these light receptors appear to be located through out the body, not just in the eyes. Custom Essays on Circadian Rhythms

I feel that sleep is one of the most interesting activities that people engage in on a daily basis. I think that the study of circadian rhythms is very important to the ongoing development of the study of sleep, especially because so many people are acquiring sleep disorders. Hopefully sleep researchers will be able to use their knowledge about circadian rhythms to help those with sleeping disorders such as narcolepsy and insomnia.

Hemingway

I learned how to fly-fish about five years ago. Actually I never caught anything, which is probably a good thing, because if I had, I would probably feel intensely guilty about it. I can't remember whether that was before I became a vegetarian or after. I only did it two times and I never got my feet wet, so I guess I can't really relate to the romantic vision of Nick Adams up to his thighs in freezing water fighting a trout. But I did learn one thing from the experience, which is that women have an easier time learning it than men. Men have the hardest time getting it out of their head that if they just cast harder, the fly will go farther. It takes some patience to learn the fluid motion, and women seem to pick it up much more quickly. I also learned that you always want to be in control or you will find yourself with a new hook-shaped earring.

I really don't buy into the whole fishing-as-spirituality thing. I would never argue with someone catching a fish for their dinner, but I refuse to see it as a romantic thing. Fish have always seemed kind of foul to me, too. Even before I stopped eating meat, I stayed away from eating them.

But all things being equal, I don't have nearly as big of a problem about fishing as I do hunting. The little fishies don't have a very developed nervous system, so I doubt they feel as much pain as us, but again, who knows? Hurting anything or anybody for no better reason than entertainment is bad karma really bad karma, and I am of the belief that karma is never wasted. That is to say that when you hurt anyone or anything, you are actually hurting everyone and everything, including yourself. I'm guessing that old Nick got his in the end. We at least know that he got shot. Order Custom Essay on Hemingway was an asshole

I'm pretty sure that old Ernest got his in the form of a shotgun in his mouth. Perhaps the spirits of all those animals that he massacred decided to haunt him and manifested themselves in the form of a liquor bottle, driving him slowly mad. We don't always see how karma manifests itself, but it is like energy itself, never dissipating.

Light Pollution a Problem?

What is Light Pollution? How could light ever pollute something? It disappears as soon as the lamp is turned off and no sticky toxic residue is left behind. This cannot be a form of pollution, can it? The answer is yes; light can actually pollute the outdoor environment and wash away the view of stars in the sky. As awareness rises around the world, this term is heard in more and more places. Light pollution is a curable problem and can be prevented through the application of well-designed and applied outdoor lighting.

Some light pollution is known as sky glow. Have you noticed the clouds overhead glowing an eerie pink, white, or orange color before? This wasted light is known as sky glow. It happens because of poorly designed and improperly aimed light fixtures called luminaries. Luminaries that do not offer adequate shielding usually spill wasted light into the sky and across property lines where it does not benefit anyone. When light spills into the sky, it reflects off of tiny airborne dust and moisture particles. This happens even on very clear evenings, too. The sky glow phenomenon directly affects the scientific research of amateur and professional astronomers. It also affects everyone else who simply enjoy looking at a dark night sky abundant with stars overhead. Sky glow is a curable condition, and we can still have adequate and safe illumination in the outdoor environment. Another form of Light Pollution is when light crosses property lines. This is called Light Trespass. Most people today have experienced Light Trespass to some degree. When someone elses light shines through your windows at night it is light trespassing onto your property. This is not only a nuisance, but it can also affect your safety. Light trespass can prevent you from using your property outdoors at night when wishing to look at the stars while lying on a blanket or viewing through a telescope or binoculars. Light pollution also occurs when too much light is applied to an area and a condition called glare results. Glare is defined as a visible source of illumination that causes a reduction in visual performance or an irritation. Light pollution is also a waste of energy and money. If a light is projecting fifty percent of its light away from the intended area then it is "lost light". The U.S could save over 1 billion dollars each year by simply directing lights down where they are needed instead of up into space (Astronomical society of greater Hartford).

Light pollution occurs mostly around cities and where an abundance of light it located. Los Angeles is one city that has had this problem due to the fact that it has a lot of sky observation labs. The lights from the city, at night, put off enough light to make it seem like dusk through the eyepiece of a telescope.

The solution to this problem is very simple, use good lighting. Good lighting provides adequate light for the intended task, but never over lights. It uses fully shielded lighting fixtures that control the light output in order to keep the light in the intended area. Good lighting also means that you should have your outside lights carefully installed so that you do not trespass light onto your neighbors lawn and inside their windows. It also uses high-efficiency lamps while still considering the color and quality as an essential design criterion.

Nighttime lighting has become a necessary part of our society. If designed and applied properly, nighttime illumination can greatly enhance a given area without causing compromise to either safety or the view of the nighttime sky overhead in surrounding areas. More communities around the nation are now adopting comprehensive outdoor lighting ordinances in order to control the appearance and improve nighttime safety and security in areas under their jurisdiction.
