Columbus and the Spanish Conquest

Columbus was a talented navigator from Genoa he wanted to benefit from the victory at Granada. He served the Portuguese crown for years he had also been a slave trader trading between Africa and the Atlantic islands. Columbus had been begging the courts of Portugal, England, France, and Spain to give him the ships and me to attempt to reach eastern Asia by sailing west across the Atlantic. There was a problem with this though. Columbus thought the world circumference at only 16,000 miles. So he said he would reach Japan or China by sailing west ,000 miles. But the Portuguese laughed at this because they put the worlds circumference at 6,000 miles. They told Columbus that he is mad if he tried that because he would perish on the huge ocean. With the fall of Granada Columbus had another chance to pled his case. Isabella who now had men and resources to spare grew more receptive to his request.Order custom research paper on Columbus and the Spanish Conquest

She made him "Admiral of the Ocean Sea" in charge of a fleet of two caravels, the Nina and the Pinta together with a lager ,square rigged ship The Santa Maria which Columbus made his flag ship.

Columbus left the port of Palos in August of 14 , Columbus headed south to the Canaries, to pick up provisions and sailed west across the Atlantic . As they traveled the crew became restless when October came around but on the 1 of October they spotted land. They splashed ashore on San Salvador, now Watlings island in the Bahamas. Chris was convinced that he was somewhere in the East Indies some where near China or Japan. Columbus called the local inhabitants Indians. For several months he poked about the Caribbean , mostly along the coast of Cuba and while doing so he ran the Santa Maria onto rocks the ship had to be abandoned. Because of this Columbus left a garrison of men behind on Hispaniola. When he returned in late 14 all of his men had been killed by the Tainos. After that Columbus made more voyages in quest of China. After his third voyage they shipped hi back to Spain in chains in 1500. Although later restored to royal favor he died in 1506.

Ex-soldiers and peasants were taken across the Atlantic to settle the new land. With them they carried seeds for Europe cereal crops and livestock, including horses, cows, sheep, goats, and pigs. The islands did not have fences so the animals went around the island freely eating every thing up. Because of that the Tainos food supply soon became threatened. The Spaniards forced the increasingly malnourished Indians to work for them. With all of this happening the native population declined catastrophically. By the 1514 only ,000 able-bodied adults remained on Hispaniola, from a population that was at least one million. This same thing happened to Cuba, Jamaica, and other small islands. Soon after all the Indians were dying we had African slave to replace them. The Spaniards continued their new world explorations as the years went by. One geographer name the new continent "America" which he named in honor of his informant the explorer Amerigo Vespucci. Soon Spain conquered Mexico and there they found treasure they had been seeking. Hernan Cortes and his small army of 400 men were the one to discover the fabulous city Tenochtitlan, the Aztec empire. The Aztec leader sent rich presents to persuade the Spaniards to leave but it had the opposite effects. Because of cultural misunderstanding war broke out. But the thing was that both sides had different objectives. Europeans tried to settle matters on eh battlefield and expected to kill many enemies. But the natives fought to gain captives whether for sacrifice or to replace the tribal losses through adoption.

When Cortes entered Tenochtitlan in 151 he seized Moctezuma the Aztec ruler as a prisoner and hostage. Though overwhelmingly outnumbered Cortes and his men began to destroy Aztec religious objects and replace them with images of the Virgin Mary or other Catholic saints. In response to this while Cortes was away the Aztecs rose against the intruders, Moctezuma was killed and the Spaniards were driven out with Heavy losses. But the smallpox the Spaniards left behind soon began killing Aztecs by the thousands. The next year Cortez returned with thousands of the Tlaxcalans warriors and he built warships armed with cannon to dominated lake Texcoco which the city lay on. After defeating the Aztecs the city lay in ruins but Spain built Mexico city on the ruins of Tenochtitlan.

Cabeza de Vaca made his way back to Mexico city in 156 after an overland journey that took him form Florida through Texas. Hernando de soto landed in Florida in 15 and roamed through muck of the southeastern US in quest of gold and silver. He crossed the Mississippi in 1541 wandered through the Ozarks and eastern Oklahoma. During these times of travel Spanish Priests did their best to convert Thousands of North Americans Indians to the Catholic faith. After that they started to build missions one of the first was in Virginia.

Today we still have missions all around the USA and Mexico. There are still native Americans that live in Mexico and all over the USA. Also there are many different cultures that live in America today and in Mexico. Not only do Europeans live here we have Chinese, Africans, Mexicans etc. We have people from all around the world who have settled and made America there home for generations.

Economic, geographic, and social factors encouraged the growth of slavery as an important part of the economy in the southern colonies between 1607 and 1775. The growth of slavery grew tremendously between these years. Slaves contributed largely to the South's population. New fertile land meant an increased need for slave labor. Slaves were treated horribly by their masters, and lived under terrible conditions.

Many lands were immensely hospitable to corn and tobacco cultivation. Settlers often planted tobacco and corn in their fields. The growing of these crops required labor. The Virginians, especially, needed labor, to grow corn for subsistence and to grow tobacco for export. They had just figured out how to grow tobacco, and in 1617 they sent off the first cargo to England. The Virginians were ready to become the masters of their slaves. By 161, a million black slaves had already been brought from Africa to South America and the Caribbean, to the Portuguese and Spanish colonies, to work as slaves.

In the deepest South, slave life was especially severe. The climate was hostile to death, and the labor was life-draining. Slaves from Africa were captured and herded among sweltering ships, bounded for the gruesome "middle passage" on which death rates ran as high as twenty percent. Terrified survivors were eventually shoved onto auction blocks in New World ports. Tobacco was a less physically demanding crop than those of the deeper South. Tobacco plantations were larger and closer to one another than the rice plantations. The size and proximity of these plantations permitted the slaves more frequent contact with friends and relatives.

A change of traditions..

B) My family's traditions have changed so much since we have moved to America. We don't cook the same or talk the same or even read the same. I miss speaking Italian I even miss writing it and it is funny to look back and think that one day I would miss writing at all cause I had to write so much in elementary school the whole alphabet and I used to get frustrated but now it comes so easy. I wish we could still do the same things we used to but my Father says that here we have to be normal here we have to be Americans he says this so often that when I close my eyes I can imagine the exact expression that he has on his face while he says it. ( A scrunched up nose and narrowed twinkling eyes and with a big broad fake smile across his face.) ; But I guess I have adjusted , I had to.

G) Everyday at work this BOY walks by he looks like he is about Milo's age. He is very cute but he appears to be very clumsy because every time he passes he always looks in my direction, and so much that he always tends to trip on something or run into someone or something however I find it kind of funny and well....kind of cute. I wonder if he will ever try to talk to me? I wonder if he is courting anyone? Could I be in love or something wait no I don't even know this mystery boy but I want to. Maybe sometime I can say something to him. Maybe tomorrow I will try to sell him some fruit. Ohh but I were the fruit taken home with him. He looks Irish he has BRIGHT blue eyes and dark blond hair he is quiet tall too. I think I am going to try to talk to him. Father always said I was too outgoing but he also said he always loved that about me. So maybe other people including this boy will too....hopefully

Equiano and The Middle Passage

Writers write for many different reasons, whether it may be to entertain, inform, or persuade. Writing would be nothing without diction and tone. Diction is the author's choice of words, and tone it the voice used to reveal the writers mood, feeling on emotion, these two go tighter because the specific words used give the feeling of the story. Equiano's purpose in writing this normative was to inform everyone of the mistreatment of the slaves on the middle passage in which he does by using these three different tones depression, frustration and amazement.

The first use of tone that comes up is the tone of helplessness. In the beginning to this narrative he is describing where the slaves were and how they were all compressed into tiny spaces. There was nothing that they could do. This brings out the feeling of helplessness. "… We were all pent up tighter, like so many sheep in a field…"(pg.48). He felt like an animal, that's how bad it was. No way of communication, no one to comfort you. One would start to feel lost and that's how he felt, "…rather than give any of them to us to eat…" (pg.46). This quote describes how hungry he was and that he had no way of getting food. He uses all of this to help the audience reading and tell them very bluntly what was going on on this ship.

The second tone that is very frequently apparent throughout this narrative is frustration. "I envied the freedom they enjoyed…"(pg 45). How low can a person feel? It's evident that he wasn't used to this sort of treatment. Equiano wants to be able to be out on the deck and learn how run the ship. For him, his independence is taken away which makes him feel discomfiture. When you are able to pick and choose what you want to do and suddenly that is all taken away from you then you feel frustrated. When he and his sister were split apart after they were taken he was also frustrated because he couldn't do anything about it. Equiano grabs out this feeling and reels in the reader to almost make them feel like they are in the story.

Custom writing service can write essays on Equiano and the Middle Passage

"… I first saw flying fishes…"(pg 47). In this quote we see the feeling and tone of amazement. It's like for the first time. It almost makes the reader excited and want to go on reading. "I also now first saw the use of the quadrant" (pg.47). When the ship had reached it' destination he began to see lots of new things. The quadrant was on 6thing he was amazed by. He wanted to know more. "…I was now more persuaded than ever, that I was in another world…"(pg. 47). This quote just verifies he feelings about the flying fishes and quadrants. This arrangement brings out lots of other feelings like curiosity and it keeps the reader on their toes pushing them to read more.

It has already been said that tone and diction will make or break the way we read a story or passage. In Equiano's account of the middle passage, great emphasis is put on the three leading tones depression, frustration, and amazement. Essentially Equiano's purpose in writing the narrative as to inform everyone the mistreatment of the slaves on the middle passage; Which he does with the use of tones. I believe that he did a great job and made me interested in reading on.

bacon and Swift Preparing for the Future

Through out the years of human existence there have always been issues that come from the study of science and technology. The human race has to make important decision about these issues. The ways these decisions have been made through the years has varied. The two English writers, Francis Bacon and Jonathan Swift, discussed some of these issues. Bacon¡¦s approach to discussing these problems was through a very structured method. He did this in his essay Ovum Organism where he describes the four idols of the humanity. On the other hand, Swift used satire to illustrate his views by story form. Gulliver¡¦s Travels is a story by Swift that discusses his political views and social views.

The Four Idols discussed by Francis Bacon in his essay Ovum Organism are Tribe, Cave, Market, and Theater. The ¡§Idols of the Tribe¡¨ hinder people¡¦s understanding because of human nature. Some examples of this are people trying to make things fit into patterns, looking for evidence to support their conclusions, having trouble conceiving of the finite or infinity, are affected by what they want to believe, having since fool them, and lacking to generalize or be abstract. The ¡§Idols of the Cave¡¨ hinder people¡¦s understanding because of individual shortcomings. Four individual shortcomings are favoring ideas that support previous conclusions, differences or similarities, antiquity or novelty, the part to the exclusion of the whole and vice versa. The third, the ¡§Idols of the Marketplace¡¨ hinders people¡¦s understanding because of words. This idol comes from people imagining and naming things that do not exist and giving multi-meaning of one word. The last of Bacon¡¦s idols is the ¡§Idols of the Theater,¡¨ which hindering understanding based on a system of philosophy, theology, or tradition (Points Made by Francis Bacon in The Four Idols). Bacon¡¦s writing is very organized and step format. He goes through each point in detail before moving on to the next point. This structure is seen in his creating of the Scientific Method, which he developed. The Scientific Method is a general set of steps that direct scientist in their approach to their studies.

Jonathan Swift¡¦s Gulliver¡¦s Travels is a story about a surgeon, named Gulliver, who takes voyages all over the world. Every voyage results in him being shipwrecked or banished and abandon. He makes it safely to land; however, the islands that he seeks refuge on have never been explored before. Each of the islands is unique. On the island of Lilliput, the people are really small, so Gulliver is a giant to them. On another island he comes across, he is the small one compared to the natives. He, also, is picked up by the floating island of Laputa this island was full of intellectual people. All they do throughout the day is to calculate, philosophy, and debate one another. Their whole existence is focused on intellectual thought and they therefore do not leave room to have any realistic or practical knowledge. The last journey Gulliver makes, he is abandoned on an island where horses have reason and the human like creature have no reason. The horses called Houyhnhnms live on the island in a utopian society. Gulliver learns to love the Houyhnhnms and despised the human-like creature called Yahoo. Custom Essays on Bacon and Swift Preparing for the Future

Francis Bacon¡¦s The Four Idols refer to the flaws in human nature, which keeps mankind from becoming a perfect society. These flaws of not understanding ourselves, personal shortcomings, and miscommunication affect in every aspect of the human society (Points Made by Francis Bacon in The Four Idols). Because of these flaws, humans will never be able to perform or understand science and technology completely. Bacon is writing his essay as a scientist. He see the corruption of science of his day and sees how it will carry on through the years to come. Bacon uses his understanding of the problems that he recorded in The Four Idols to come up with a systematic way of studding science. This systematic way of studying science later became know as the Scientific Method. In his Scientific Method he sets up an order of operations that should be taken to get correct data and results from research. While the Scientific Method is pacific to science and technology, Bacon¡¦s Four Idols deal with every aspect of human life. In both cases Bacon presents the problems and resolutions straight forwardly and for this reason his writings are still being used today.

Jonathan Swift¡¦s Gulliver¡¦s Travels, also, discusses the problems that are common in human culture. Just as Bacon¡¦s works can be pacific for science and technology, part of Swift¡¦s Gulliver¡¦s Travels focus on those same issues. He uses a story swamped with satire to show his point of view. Each of the travels that Gulliver takes focuses on different important problems Swift saw in the England during his life. However, these issues are still true and evident in the world today. Swift deals with the political problems along with science and technology. The voyage where Gulliver is picked up by the floating Island is Swift¡¦s strongest satire against a sole abstract world, which included mathematics, philosophy, and other sciences. The Laputans represent a society that is based on abstract idealism. Although the Laputans can derive anything on paper, they have no practical skills. Swift describes this best

Their houses are very ill built, the walls bevil, without one right angle in any apartment; and this defect ariseth from the contempt they bear for practical geometry; which they despise as vulgar and mechanic, those instructions they give being too refined for the intellectuals of their workmen; which occasions perpetual mistakes. And although they are dextrous enough upon a piece of paper, in the management of the rule, the pencil, and the divider, yet in the common actions and behavior of life I have not seen a more clumsy, awkward, and up handy people, nor so slow and perplexed in their conceptions upon all other subjects, except those of mathematics and music. They are very bad reasoners, and vehemently given to opposition, unless when they happen to be of the right opinion, which is seldom their case. Imagination, fancy, and invention, they are wholly strangers to, nor have any words in their language by which those ideals can be expressed; the whole compass of their thoughts and mind being shut up within the two forementioned sciences. (Swift 418)

After showing this extreme, Swift shows the extreme in the other direction. The next journey Gulliver takes, he finds himself on an island with horses that have the capability to think and reason. The horses called Houyhnhnms represent another extreme in human culture that we can shift toward. This one extreme is of total reason. While being able to reason these horses have no idea of desiring. F. R. Leavis in ¡§The Irony of Swift¡¨ says ¡§Swift did his best for the Houyhnhnms, and they have all the reason, but the Yahoos have all the life¡¨(Jonathan Swift, Gulliver¡¦s Travels ). An example of this is in the marriage rituals of the Houyhnhnms.

Courtship, love, presents, jointures, settlement, have no place in their thoughts, or terms whereby to express them in their language. The young couple meet and are joined, merely because it is the deternination of their parents and friends;¡KBut the violation of marriage, or any other unchastity, was never heard of; and the married pair pass their lives with the same friendship and mutual benevolence that they bear to all others of the same species who come in their way, without jealousy, fondness quarreling, or discontent. (Swift 456)

Swift view humans as being like the Houyhnhnms if human throw out science and technology and ignore the part of our minds that give people creativity. If people do this, we will become dull logical people. Although Swift prefers this extreme over the other he see that it is not good either.

Although Francis Bacon and Jonathan Swift writing are totally different they both make similar stances on the modern issues about science and technology. Bacon sets up a structure that is an aid to people. His aid helps people realize the problems early and gives them a way to deal with them. On the other hand, Swift uses satire to make it obvious of the dangers of these issues not being resolved correctly. Both Bacon and Swift saw the importance of having a balance in society. They realized that there are many dangers and troubles that come from becoming totally focused in any one field, especially as a whole society. The things they discussed and the way they dill with it is still being used today in our issues with science and technology. They saw the problems of their day and saw that they would not change but increase in magnitude over the years. They made their writings capable of being used throughout the years.

~ William Carlos Williams

Despite the superiority people grant to our tumultuous modern society, many of us find ourselves wishing for the comfort of the country lives of our ancestors. Small-town and farm life have been glorified by many artists in many different forms. In "The Red Wheelbarrow" William Carlos William uses the power of his words to create a strikingly vibrant, symbolic image of some of the essential elements in farm life hard work and reliance on nature for nourishment and prosperity. These symbolic elements help us to understand the opening stanza "So much depends upon."

Williams opens his poem with a very dramatic image "a red wheel barrow." He grabs our attention to the wheelbarrow by painting it the eye-popping shade of red, but he gets us to focus our attention on this image by dragging out the line, creating a break in the word "wheelbarrow." This strategy forms an emphasis on these words and prolongs the reading of them, causing us to wonder, "what is the importance of this wheelbarrow?" To me, the wheelbarrow is a symbol of the hard work done by farmers.

Although I was not raised on a farm or in a small town, my family tries to retain much of the work ethic of our ancestors. For generations my family lived in the small farming community of Peculiar, Missouri. During World War II, my grandfather and his brothers signed up with the armed forces and, although they were scattered all over the globe, they tried to stay true to what their community had taught them. They believed that nothing comes for free; you have to work for it and that everyone has a job that they need to do. For me, the wheelbarrow of this poem symbolizes this sort of work ethic. In a farming community everyone is important because we all need to work together for the common good.

The next element Williams introduces us to is that of rainwater. In the second stanza, he parallels the unnatural break from the previous stanza by adding one in the word "rain water." I believe that the rainwater is a symbol of the dependence of man on the grace of nature. Farmers need the rain to nourish their land; without it their crops will fail. A year of poor crops can be disastrous for a farming community. Without the rain to replenish the land, the wheelbarrow (symbolizing hard work) would be useless. No matter how much work you put into a task, nothing will come from it without nourishment. The rainwater could also simply symbolize the renewal of the land. If the land is not able to properly renew itself, it can fight back against man. In the mid-1800s, my great grandparents moved to America from Ireland because of the great potato famine. This famine was caused because the majority of the population had become reliant on the potato crop for food. However, so many people had been growing the crop for so long that the land didnt have a chance to renew itself and a fungus attacked the crop. Because of this, there wasnt enough food to feed everybody. Millions of people died and many left their homelands to start a new life in a new land.

In the final stanza, Williams completes the image by adding one last element white chickens. Williams creates a contrast to the wheelbarrow by making the chickens white rather than brown or grey. This contrast makes the chickens stand out as an important symbol in the poem. To me, the chickens represent the prosperity that comes from hard work and the nourishment of the land. I, personally, have not had much first-hand experience with chickens. When I was little my grandfather, after his retirement, kept a small farm with a few animals - chickens being one of them. One day, my sisters and I arrived at my grandparents house a little earlier than they had expected. My grandmother told us that my grandpa was out in the garage and then sent us out to say hello to him. When we turned the corner to go into the garage, we saw our grandfather about to slaughter a chicken which was meant to be that nights dinner. We gasped, which distracted my grandpa; causing him to decapitate the chicken in the wrong place. As my sisters and I soon found out, if you dont slaughter a chicken in exactly the right way, it causes the nerve endings to not be completely detached and the chicken will still be alive for a few moments. In those few moments, the headless chicken managed to chase my sister half way back to the house. After that incident, my sisters and I usually stayed as far away from the chicken coup as we could. However, now that I am older, I can understand the importance of animals to a farm. The upkeep of animals requires a lot of hard work and money. In return, animals provide farmers and their families with meat, milk, and eggs.

The Red Wheelbarrow is not just a poem that exists to provide us with a beautiful image; I believe it is a comment on how, in farm life, even the smallest thing can have a great purpose. The hard work of the farmers, the renewal of the land through rain, and the nourishment that animals provide are all interconnected; without one of these elements, the others can not function. People rely on the nourishment that crops and animals provide for them in order to put in the hard work a farm requires, but without the nourishment of the rain the farmers hard work would be in vain. So much depends upon each of these elements in order for there to be prosperity.
