I am going to write about the film which was shot according to the book Cry, the beloved country written by Alan Paton. Paton wrote this book from his deep concern with the racial problem in South Africa. This film was shot in the early sixties and even though there were already made colored films, this one is black and white as the whole issue of apartheid between blacks and whites, which is the subject of many books and films.

This film is very similar to the book and the script is nearly completely the same. Every character says exactly the same words as those in the book. In the beginning of the film there is the sight of the landscape of Ndotsehni and the words of how the land is destroyed because of the bad treatment with the land. This tells about the bad situation in South Africa. The action is based on the story of Stephen Kumalo, the black priest of Ndotsehni.

One day Kumalo receives a letter from the priest from Johannesburg in which there is written that his sister Gertrude is very sick and that he is to come to Johannesburg . He hasn't heard from his son, sister and brother for years. When he comes to Johannesburg he is very confused because he has never been to such a big city before. He is helped by the young priest Msimangu. He finds his sister with her child living in very bad conditions. Gertrude's sickness is not a normal kind of sickness. She is doing a prostitute and also illegal activities. She knows nothing about Kumalo's son Absalom. He takes her to the place where he is now living. Their plan is that he will take them back to Ndotsenhi. Then Kumalo finds his brother John. John is a carpenter and a bussinessman. He has an another opinion about the blacks and whites as his brother does. He knows also nothing about Absalom. He knows only that Absalom and his son were companions. The searching for Absalom is very hard and Kumalo finds his son when it is too late. His son is to be hung because of murder of a white man. Before he's hung he marries his not legal wife with whom he has child so Kumalo would take her with him to Ndotsehni. When Kumalo is to come back to Ndotsehni Gertrude disappears but she leaves her child with Kumalo. Everybody is happy that Kumalo is back but he is a little bit ashamed that his son is a murderer. Kumalo meets a father of a killed man, Mr.Jarvis. Mr.Jarvis doesn't feel anger in him and he understands Kumalo, because he knows that Kumalo is a good man. He gives money to Kumalo to build a new church, he also sends a man to teach people in Ndotsehni how to cultivate the land so it would be as rich as it was before. In the end of the film there is Kumalo standing on the hills waiting for the dawn, the dawn when his son is to be hung, the dawn which brings a new hope to South Africa. This end is accompanied with the hymnic song Onto the hills.

The whole film is very well made. The characters are played excellently and the setting looks exactly in the way that it is described in the book. I liked both the book and the film very much.Write my Essay on Alan Paton, Cry the Beloved Country for me

Food...The Foundation of Everyone's Security

New York City, Los Angeles, and a small Arkansas town...What do these geographically and culturally diverse locations have in common? A first glance would lead you to believe they have nothing in common, but after a closer investigation, one common tie can be found. Each location whether metropolitan or rural, is affected by America's leading industry, agriculture. When a family gathers for a Sunday dinner of steak and potatoes, they are reaping the benefits of American farmers. When a vegetarian searches the grocery store isles in search of non-meat products, he or she is facing the effects of American farmers and their agriculture products. In short, American farmers' are responsible for supplying American's with their daily bread baskets. As president George W. Bush stated in a recent forum pertaining to America's nutritional needs, "Food is the foundation of everyone's security." No statement could be more true.

Although most American's simply run to the grocery store and purchase a loaf of bread or a carton of milk, they do not think about where these products come from or who produced them. As scientific technology is expanding by leaps and bounds, so too has agriculture and the methods used to produce the ever increasing demand for use of farm commodities. The rate at which biotechnology in agriculture has swept the U.S. farmland--and beyond--is simply unbelievable. China alone will plant over a million acres of genetically modified cotton. More than half of Canada's canola crop this year will be genetically modified.

American crops will also rely largely upon genetically modified crops--0 million acres worth--nearly a third of the country's total farm acreage. Americans now face the question of how far agriculture practices can and will go in order to reach the production ease and accommodated price they are willing to pay for. Bringing genetically modified food to the nation's table has been a reoccurring question in the minds of consumers and farmers alike. In the past several years, the increasing use and growing supply of genetically altered crops has influenced farmer's supply and affected consumers' demands for agriculturally related products. Consumers are asking themselves, "Just what's coming to dinner?"

Write your Food...The foundation of Everyone's Security research paper

For some, this question is easy to answer. For others, this poses a controversial debate into whether genetically modified crops should be allowed into the American food supply. In half a dozen countries, consumer groups and government policy makers have fired a debate saying that while genetically modified food may feed the starving now, the long-term effects may harm public health and hurt agriculture trade in the future. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, over 0 percent of American corn and at least 70 percent of American soybeans are genetically modified. That means the plants genes have been altered to make crops easier to grow and more pest resistant. Seed developers are able to target a single plant trait without the unintended characteristics that may occur with traditional breeding methods. The current U.S. food market contains almost 60 percent genetically modified food. The GM food supply seems to be endless in a world where food is definitely everyone's security.

Consumers have responded to the increase in GM food with challenging questions such as the expected effects of GM food use. The enthusiasm is far from unanimous. For instance, two years ago when protein from Starlink corn was found to have a possible human allergen, over 00 corn products were recalled--everything from Taco Bell taco shells to various corn chips and other snacks sold by Kroger and Safeway. Food companies shelled out $ million in order to settle the consumer class action suit for this case.

In more recent months, the seed production giant Monsanto--hoping to avoid a controversy--notified officials of a system slip of canola strains that had never been commercially approved for use. Although no health risks were discovered, the industry's inability to track the GM food surfaced to the forefront. Consumers now wonder if there will be future health risks as a result of the GM food. There are also rising concerns that foods with transplanted genes may cause allergic reactions. One example is a gene from a nut inserted into another food, possibly triggering allergic reactions in some consumers. Some critics also debate on how accurately the body digests and utilizes biotechnology-derived foods in comparison to traditionally produced foods. Presently there are no visible negative consequences but US citizens wonder what the future will hold. Questions have also arisen pertaining to the environmental effects farmers can expect. Many producers query the debate over the possible occurrence of "super weeds" that would become herbicide resistant and eventually not respond to any form of weed control. Scientists agree that at some point weeds will overcome the seeds' built in herbicides and insects will eventually become immune to the pesticides encountered in GM seed. From an economic perspective, consumer's fears of the unknown effects of GM food places a damper on the acceptance of GM products. The question posing before farmers and economists alike is just how these unanswered questions are going to affect the demand for an expanding breadbasket.

Although the economic effects are not completely clear at present, the farmers' benefits are well defined. From the Eastern Seaboard reaching to the Western hill country, thousands of farmers are "betting the farm" on the new GM crops. GM crops make the farming more efficient. Farmers using GM seed can reduce the costs of insecticides be depleting or significantly decreasing the applications of chemical insecticides aimed at preventing harmful pests such as the European corn borer and the cotton bollworm. Reduced use of insecticides reduces the time the farmer spends in the field and also the costs of applying and reapplying the chemicals. Farmers received higher gross revenues in return although there is a cost.

The herbicide-tolerant, insect-resistant seed creates the need for decreased chemical application, but GM seed usually costs a considerable amount more than traditional seed along with the technology fees that are acquired. The question arises of whether the benefits are more justified than the costs in using the genetically altered crops. In order to clearly define the economic benefits created by GM seed use, several variables must be examined in order to see the real impact on production versus profit. Factors include farm size, operator education and experience, seed price, debt-to-assets ratio, use of marketing or production contracts, irrigation, crop price, use of consultants, and pest pressure. The results of evaluating each variable create an elasticity--the change in a particular impact (pesticide use, yields, or net returns) Conclusions can be drawn across the agricultural sector as more producers embrace the technology. Estimating accurate costs and returns is going to require close examination of the numerous variable factors that could and do have an impact on the farmers' returns.

In a world where prolonged drought, corrupt government policies, and mismanagement of food supplies has led to a worldwide food shortage, some ask how using technology that would enable increased crop yields can even be questioned. Obviously the crop yields have increased by the use of GM seed but what is the real economic profit? Is producer supply going to overcome the consumer demands? Or have the major seed and chemical companies obtained a way to monopolize farmers into using a selected crop choice solely for the companies economic profit? The risks imposed by GM products are a very complex issue that the American public may never understand. Government authorities can offer intervention and work at providing a successful alley for consumers to turn, but until individuals assess the pros and cons of GM foods, they will be vulnerable to emotional appeals and therefore possible biased GM information. As far as the farmers' feelings toward GM crops and production methods, the current results are positive. Farmers have found a way to increase their crop yields while using a decreased amount of herbicides and pesticides that are not only costly but could be environmentally harmful.

One fact is clear though, whether farmers ponder the decision of planting transgenic crops or consumers debate over purchasing select food items, bringing GM food to the American table is creating anticipation of positive benefits--better nutritional, pharmacological, and product qualities--that are promised in the future. Obviously food is still "the foundation of everyone's security" and is still "at the heart of a growing America."

I will be doing my final project on the subject of should Harry Potter books be ban from schools. That being school required reading lists and also the school libraries. I will be taking the stand of 'no', this series of books should in no way be ban from schools. I will be conducting field interviews via a camcorder. My subjects will be people from all walks off life children, young adults, and adults. I will be going everywhere from the heart of these institutions where I can reach the students specifically to my immediate family where I will get a unique viewpoint from my sister and her daughter who is a Harry Potter fan. I am expecting and hoping to receive a wide array of opinions on this subject and other closely related Harry Potter subjects. My interviews, hopefully, will provide a solid means to my conclusion; however, if they do not, modifications might have to be made. Despite all of this, Harr Potter still prevailed and went on to kill all of the bad guys. Sure Harry Potter books are not as widely read by the younger generation as they should be, but in time they will be. There can only be on factor in which will decide something lik this, and that is time. Time is of the essence and only hermoine, harry, and will can help themselves out. Good luck to them on their journey through time and the rest of the harry Potter novels.

so good luck to them.

Throughout A Separate Peace, its most recognizable familiarity was that the main character, Gene Forrester, followed an intellectual odyssey that foreshadowed the Hero Journey archetypal pattern. Undergone Genes reliving experience of his days at Devon School, it was most obvious that he began in his own, known world where he was in control of all around him and then as tests and trials of his self-composure surfaced, Gene transformed into holding a better understanding of himself through his spiritual healing and return to the new world. Thus, due to Gene Forresters succession of his intellectual odyssey, A Separate Peace had a high applicabilty of the Hero Journey archetype.

With knowledge of Joseph Campbells form and ideas of the Hero Journey archetype, there was a clear appliance of it to Genes intellectual odyssey in A Separate Peace. Similarily to his first stage a beginning in the known, safe world, we are first encountered with Gene, as a light-hearted, sixteen-year old with no worries. Despite the fact that war was going on, Gene lived a carefree life calmly,

numbly reading Virgil and playing tag in the river downstream (7). To Gene and the boys, there was no need for fear or need to enroll in the war because there was no real war, the bombs in Central Europe were completely unreal to us here...our place was too fair for us to accept that. We spent the summer in complete selfishness (). For Gene specifically, why would he need to worry? He was a confident, social, and well educated teenage boy with good social status in school. He also had his own sense of identity about himself.Overall, he and his friends reminded people of what peace was like. Like Gene says, they could be thought of as a sign of the life the war was being fought to preserve (17). But, all that was about to change...

Genes life could be considered quite content, almost perfect. And then surfaced the call to adventure, related to the Hero Journey archetype. But, take his life and all his downfalls, what is to be realized is that Finny, Genes roommate and best friend (), had all Gene does except Genes downfalls, like sports for example, were Finnys superiorities. Because of this, Gene turns out to become very jealous of Finny and discovered his deadly rivalry (46) for him. As this rivalry began and grew, Gene entered into the new unknown world. And the crossing of the of the threshold occurs when Gene Buy cheap Gene's Hero Journey in John Knowles' A Separate Peace term paper

"jounced the limb. Finny, his balance gone...hit the bank with a sickening, unnatural thud" (5).

Now completely in the new world, Gene began to encounter a large variety of difficult intellectual tests and trials. All of a sudden, Gene was filled with feelings of guilt, uncertainty, unstability, confusion, and new responsibilities. At first, Gene felt he had nothing to do with Finny's fall and at one time even asked Finny, "Do you remember what made you fall" (57)? But this denial began to grow and causes Gene to live a harsh summer "spent in an atmosphere of reverie and unreality..." (5). Then, when Finny acknowledged the idea that there was a slight possibility that Gene could have jounced the limb, Gene returned to his dorm room, and wondered to himself, "could it be that he might be right? Had I really and definitely and knowingly done it after all? I couldn't remember, I couldn't think" (6). This began to show Gene's guilt, confusion, and guilt towards Finny's fall. But, as more intellectually difficult trials surfaced, and the guilt increased, Gene started to feel like he was part of Finny. What was done to Finny is done to him. When Finny is told he can no longer participate in sports, Gene "wanted no more of sports... they were barred from him, as though when Dr. Stanpole said, 'Sports are

finished' he had been speaking to him" (76), instead of Finny. Gene feeling part of Finny, expressed not only his doubt in himself, but confusion in himself, and the feel of immortality. To Gene, he "wondered in the silences between the jokes about Leper whether the still hidden parts of himself might contain the Sad Sack, the outcast, or the coward" (11). Conclusively, Gene's feeling of immortality could not take back what had been done to Finny, but he also "couldn't make himself over between dawn and dusk" (7), like he had been able to do before. Almost biggest of his inner-self trials though, Gene, now realizing he had jounced the limb, does not want to admit his wrongdoing. He didn't care about the rest of the guys, but he feared Finny finding out. All of a sudden, "he [Finny] was suddenly terrifyingly starnge to me..." (157-168).

But before he could tell Finny of his wrongdoing, Finny fell again, Gene reached the peak of his insanity, and Gene is faced with the supreme ordeal of his intellectual journey. Although it seems that Gene has already been on the road to insanity, it's obvious he reached the peak of it as he walked down a road that he has walked down many, many times in his life. But as he continued, his immortality and insanity take over as he realizes that "his whole life at Devon had

been a dream or rather that everything at Devon...were intensly real, wildy alive and totally meaningful,, and he alone was a dream, a figment which had never really touched anything. He felt that he was not, never had been, and never would be a living part of this overpoweringly solid and deeply meaningful world around me..." (177). His insanity continued, when the "the stadium did speak powerfully, and at all times, including this moment. But I could not hear, and that was because I did not exist" (178). The ongoing insanity and immortality made him start to hallucinate and personify other immortal things like the "newsreels and magazines [that were] choked with images of blazing artilleries and bodies hald sunk in the sand of a beach somewhere" (17). "I tried to calm myself," Gene said to try and justify what he did to Finny, "after all, people were shooting flames into caves and grilling other people alive... my brief burst of animositu, lasting only a second...what was that in the midst of the holocaust?" (17-180). Gene has to overcome his self confusion with himself to see and accept reality. But, after a day of norm and wait for Finny's surgery to conclude, "Phineas died from the marrow of his bone flowing down his blood stream to his heart" (185). Gene, faced with the supreme ordeal of his intellectual journey, took this shockingly and "did not cry then or ever about Finny. I could not escape a feeling that this was my own funeral, and you do not cry in that case" (186). Gene felt, he himself had died and the problem he was faced with was most painful because it is uncontrollable and he cannot bring his best friend back.

The return to the "normal world," the spiritual healing, the recrossing of the threshold, and gift to the world in A Separate Peace related to the Hero Journey archetype. As Gene said, "it seamed clear that wars were not made by generations and their special stupidities, but that wars were made instead by something ignorant in the human heart" (1). This supported his return because it proves how Gene finally understood the war and how it affected his life with Finny. Also with his return, Gene felt a spiritual cleansing of fury in his inner-self because his "fury was gone, he felt it had gone, dried up at the source withered and lifeless. Phineas had absorbed it and taken it with him, and he [Gene] was rid of it forever" (15). He was finally able to admit his hatred and its consequence due to the fact he "never killed anybody... because his war ended before he ever put on a uniform; he was on active duty all my time at school; he killed his enemy there" (16). He admitted his wrongdoing. He defeated his fear or as he said it, "I must have made my escape from it" (). This also showed his healing. As far as Gene's gift to the world, following the Hero Journey archetype, he spoke to all, "the more things remain the same, the more they change after all...Nothing endures, not a tree, not love, not even a death by violence. Anybody could see it was time to come in out of the rain" (6). He finally realized how as things change, they're really the same and it was finally the time for him to admit that.

Due to the Hero Journey archetypal substructure, the understanding of the novel, A Separate Peace, was a less burdensome task because of its focus on a certain pattern of ideas that many pieces of literature follow. Novels based upon the Hero Journey archetype are a prevalent occurence because they also tend to be a piece that is very moral and teaches the reader new ideas because of how or what the characters discover. Therefore, the use of the Hero Journey archetype in A Separate Peace composes the novel to be relevantly more universal, or comprehensive, and satisfying to the reader.

Argumentative Essay

"Master Harold"…. and the boys, by Athol Fugard informs the reader of the great conflict between different racial groups in South Africa at this time. Fugard grew up in the middle of this conflict which influenced him in writing this book. Throughout the book important relationships are formed and racial comments are made, which all contribute to the fact that this book is an important book for secondary school students to study.

One of the central themes that is discussed in "Master Harold"…. and the boys are the relationships between each character. Throughout the book Willie develops a strong relationship with Sam because Willie is also black and about the same age as Sam. However this kind of relationship is not expressed between Hally (a white boy) and Sam. Hally is arrogant and clearly superior to Sam even though Sam is old enough to be Hally's father. This kind of behavior was evident in Fugard's lifetime in South Africa. Hally causes tension when he says "Sam that should be easy enough for you," clearly shows how Hally intimidates Sam. In the book Hally displays a mixed relationship to his father. Hally goes from anxious to know how he is when he says "No Sam. They can't be discharging him," to eventually not caring about his father at all when he says "Life is just a plain bloody mess, that's all. And people are fools." Relationships can also be found in the movie "The Power Of One" where PK (a white boy) has a strong relationship with an older black man which is similar to the relationship shared by Hally and Sam. Even though both black men are older than there white friends, they have to call them either "Sir" or in Hally's case, "Master Harold." These examples demonstrate the relationships that were formed during Fugard's lifetime in South Africa.

Another aspect that was discussed in the book and was evident in South Africa, was racism. Racism is displayed in the title. The words "Master Harold," imply that the inverted commas suggest the status be not deserved or appropriate. The line, ….and the boys, in lower case shows the difference in status compared to "Master Harold," which is in upper case. Also, tension is made when Hally commands Sam to call him "Master Harold" or Sam might lose his job as a servant. Another example of racial tension is when Sam was asked to leave the area because it was a "whites only bench." This informs the reader of how life was like in South Africa during Fugard's lifetime. Racist comments are again made by Hally when he says "Don't try to be clever, Sam. It doesn't suit you," shows the prejudice that was experienced in South Africa. Another racist incident found in the book is when Hally had to ask permission for Sam to go in and get his father. Hally and his father would also joke about "Niggers" and Hally would often make things worse by telling Sam these jokes. Racial tensions are also evident in "The Power Of One," when PK would get beaten up because he was English decent and most of the other boys were Dutch background. Racism is a very important feature for discussion and is present in both "Master Harold"…. and the boys and Fugard's life in South Africa. Write my Essay on Argumentative essay cheap

Giving Up and or Quitting as the Case May Be

Honest, I tried to have a quiet time each morning in Alabama. It was rigorous self-discipline that did it, not enthusiam or joy or meeting a Person each day. I was praying through Peter Lords 5 Plan - a nice prayer notebook. God did not answer my prayers in the affirmative, but it was a nice way to pray. We had a baby though, and that took care of the spare time for prayer in the AM. She was a sweetie. Two more came along. Sweeties, all.

We tried Matts format for friendship evangelism in Alabama. Nothing. This did not work for us. Why, God? I also found the Deeper Life stuff was not working for me like it was for those who wrote the books.

I quit expecting God to move. I got down to parenting and the job and marriage responsibilities. We still went to church a lot. Three times a week, in fact. I taught Sunday School to adults for years and years (still do). It was fairly rewarding, but not what I wanted in a relationship with God. It did not match what I could find in the Bible. One thing, though. About age 0, I quit being so bashful.

I did make a serious personal commitment to not sell out my wife and kids to pursue personal career goals. (Thank you, James Dobson.)

Sometimes a Light Surprises . .

In 1, Peter Lord came to Florence, Alabama. I made it a point to go hear him. He was much calmer than 15 years before. This time, I got two sentences. You can hear from God. The greatest enemy to hearing God is hurry.

For weeks it seemed like God was immediately present whenever I was outdoors. That was nice and warm. I had not expected Him to move after so long.

The mens group, Promisekeepers/Men of Integrity, came to the area. I went to some meetings. I was challenged to cross racial barriers.
